I just got Civ 4 at target for $5.  I'm trying really hard to like this game but am having a hard time.  Maybe turn-based just isn't my thing or maybe it's a Sid Myers thing.  If I want to build something, I find myself just clicking the turn completion button over and over, watching the years roll by until my "thing" is built.

Please help me like this game.

I tried this game, but I ran into two issues that I couldn't overcome.

a) I could NOT get my character to do what I wanted. She bounced around and would get "reset" often. Walking around in the starting area sucked. (No, it wasn't my connection or computer)

b) No jumping?

Your sig says you played ~40 hours in WoW this week.  I really couldn't give any other game a real chance until I totally quit WoW.  Try only playing one MMO for a week.  Otherwise, you'll be comparing experiences left and right.  GW is a great game and WoW is a great game.  However, GW aint no WoW and I think GW has a lot of things going for it that WoW only dreams of.

If you're under a really tight budget, and not sure you'll like the game, get the $20 single game.

If you can spend $13 bucks extra, and think you may like to play at some point, get the $33 trilogy at gogamer.com.

Guess it depends how tough it is for you to earn/spend an extra $13.

Correction, GW2 won't come out until Aion starts to tread downhill in subs.

That makes me sad a little inside.  GW was here first!  Oh well... at least ArenaNet can learn from any mistakes NCSoft makes with Aion and its release.

Who's Matt Forbeck?  Is he any good?

Thanks.  That's really good news.  I really want to like this game.  I already quit WoW a couple of months ago after playing it for a few years -- just got too burnt out on it.  I'm having a lot of fun with Guild Wars but am determined not to play another game past the burn-out time like I did with WoW.  I'll most likely be trying Aion when it releases if I don't get in the beta.

Aion vs. WoW

Are people who've left WoW and have tried Aion in beta finding anything new and exciting besides the new lore?  Does it feel like a new game?  I've seen vids and I'm afraid it looks a lot like WoW gameplay (except for the flying part).

1.  Jumping

2.  Swimming

3.  Open world (incl. falling/fall-damage)

Other than those... don't change a thing.

Aion = Failon  -- I'll take what they've alluded to in GW2 over that game any day.  :P

Gogamer.com still has the trilogy for $32.90.  That's where I got it and have been having a blast.  My monk is level 12 and I haven't even left post-Searing Ascalon (I think I hit level 10 in pre-Searing).

I'm sure NCS will give at least 6-9 months notice before GW2 releases and there hasn't been any new info for a long time.  Plenty of time to run through all the GW content IMO.

Is there a way to tell whether you've completed a mission or not?  I just ran one tonight that I ran yesterday -- but didn't realize it until the final cut scene (too tired lol).  Also, is there a significance of the shields with one or 2 swords showing on the map?  Thanks.

The more skills you add, the harder it is to balance though.

I love it that GW classes aren't "balanced" on a regular basis.  If GW2 introduces the regular class balancing patches that WoW has today, I will quickly move to play something else.

......   BTW, what does it take to get GW2 listed as a MMO on this site anyway?

If I remember correctly you need evidence of a game.

It was announced March 2007.  Hopefully more info from the GW dev team and justice from MMORPG.com is iminent.

That said, NC Soft doesn't want to hurt the sales of Aion in the US by putting out a flood of info about GW2.  Guild Wars has a good reputation, and is second only to WoW in the American market.  They just came out with a bunch of updates for GW, and it's the only MMO other than WoW that is friendly to the casual player, a player other MMOs have overlooked at their peril.

Uh.

According to what I've heard (not that I'm very interested in WoW in the first place), you need to raid in WoW to get the best gear.

So why is WoW that casual friendly ?!? Thats a bit surprising news to me. I think GW does a lot better than WoW in respect to casual friendly, and I can think of a lot of games which are about as casual friendly as WoW (all theses socalled "WoW clones", for a start).

WoW is casual-friendly (once you achieve Loremaster by completing all the quests) if you like fishing, cooking, jousting -- and if you hate decent looking/quality gear.

GW2 is pretty much finished but the release is delayed to give Aion a chance to launch.

NCSoft didn't want GW2 competing with Aion.

Interesting.  Are you a GW2 dev?  Aion's got all the ingredients to be a major hyperfail.  I'm as interested in trying it as anyone else but it's still a 3 year old game.  There are just way too many MMOs releasing soon that are a lot fresher.  Aion and GW are so different from each other.  Bliz should be the one worrying at this point.

BTW, what does it take to get GW2 listed as a MMO on this site anyway?

True or False... once STO, KotOR, or JG:E releases, Eve's population is going to drop by 50+%.

I tried the demo, liked a lot of "things" about the game.  However, it's not for me.  I, too, like more interaction and the training just seems like a way for the developers to get monthly subs without people having to log on and use bandwidth.

Just my opinion.  I'm a WoW burnout and GW noob BTW who really wants a good scifi MMO to play.

I think that's the problem, though. People don't want long engaging storylines and quests. Prophecies in general consisted of much longer and more epic storylines compared to the other two campaigns, and people complained about that. It's unfortunate.

I agree.  I ended up choosing to go Mo/E.  I left Pre-searing at level 9.  Seriously, it's the most fun I've had in a MMO in a long time.  Story line, graphics, cutscenes, and community are top notch.  I know there's still a lot of content to cover but I'm really enjoying it right now.  There's very little I'd want them to change in GW2 -- jumping, swimming, and being able to jump off some random cliffsides are only cosmetic.

I don't think GW is dead; but I just started playing (and having a blast so far).

Not sure why GW isn't classified as a MMO ... It's definitely a MMO but a very different one than WoW.

It's not a gear/gold/group grind like WoW is.  Sure GW has it's faults like anything else.  However, it's a refined machine where WoW is just too big and open IMO.

You poor diluted fool. You just bought into a game of unparalleled boredom. It is a game of builds of skills. Nothing more. The story sucks, it is not an MMO in the slightest, and all the top armor and weapons have the exact same stats. The only way to differentiate yourself is via skills. Get out now and wait for Aion.

Is that sarcasm or did you just describe exactly what makes Guild Wars so fucking good? It's really all about the builds and teams and all the armor and weapons being the same ensures that even more. Guild Wars requires you to be good, not to wear good gear, and it requires you to think what combinations would work, not just mash them all and look good that way too. Amazing though that one can think that's bad...

No kidding!!  I'm still very new to this game but so far it's what I wish the WoW behemoth was.  Graphics are 95% better (-5% for the fact you can't jump while you run around), it's very solo and very group friendly, and your character is totally customizable.  It's amazing how big WoW is and how unable they are to getting anything right.  Who needs dual spec when you can customize your attributes for free whenever you're in a town?  Story line and lore is awesome and more often than not, the NPCs actually contribute to the story.

It's nice to be in a game that isn't being "balanced" every week.  It's nice to not have to pay a monthly fee.  It's nice to actually have fun in a game again instead of hanging around in Dalaran looking for someone to run an instance I've run a 100 times before.  Ridiculous.

I'm hope they stick to their guns in GW2 and don't change many of the things that set themselves apart from other MMOs.

Now if I could only find a second profession for my monk...

Yesterday I bought the Guild Wars Trilogy from ncsofts store, then i tried to buy another copy for my wife, but it says I cant buy one within their designated timeframe (apperently to try and curb credit card fraud or something), but it doesnt say how long that timeframe is.  I was wondering if anyone had any idea how long that is.

Not sure about that.  However, I just picked the Trilogy up off gogamer.com for $32.90.  If you can wait for the shipment, it's probably a good deal.
