The internet is toxic. Particularly if you put yourself up in front of the public. It doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or a YouTube blogger, if you express an opinion on anything, expect a ton of hate and criticism to come your way. Even death and rape threats have become par to the course. Lets be frank, it is impossible for public figures to have a reasonable conversation about anything particularly sexism, terrorism, religion and sexuality. These are some of the issues of our time and it's impossible to discuss them on the internet.

The internet will become less free and more of a closed garden as time goes on. Leaked celebrity photos and terror videos is just another step in that direction. It used to be a place for people to express themselves freely and without the worry of retaliation.

It's not hate. I've seen vitriol towards some games. I would use Darkfall and Star Wars as an example of games that have had hate. If it was deserved or not is another matter.

WildStar is struggling to get noticed in a already crowded marketplace. It's selling point is hardcore raiding. The problem is that hardcore raiding is only done by a small number of people and the rest of the game isn't good enough or different enough to pull people away from their current MMO. I don't think its a bad game, some nice art direction, it has soul and is fun to play for the most part. But it's just more of the same and most people are fed up with this type of game. I don't think the carbine have mislead us, they told us exactly what type of game this was, but people are dissapointed how similar this game is to other titles, but no more than that.

Hope you don't get SWATTED.

Star Citizen funding has turned into a perverse mini-game:

The only problem WoW created is peoples inability to accept its existence. It's been ten years... get over it.

I think its about time that MMOs rethink the map. It no longer serves the purpose it once had. Maybe a world boss in an area and a few scattered bandit camps that spawn randomly is ok. But quest hubs and mobs just standing there waiting for you the galant hero to kill it is just not on anymore. It's silly. Hardly anyone wants to do that stuff, its mere busy work that fills the gap between going to one dungeon to the next.

It's real estate that could be used for something else. Housing, guild towns, castles, farming, manufacturing and a vast wilderness where you can play the survivalist with rare monsters to hunt... the possibilities are endless. Currently the map is squandered and filled with dull content with little reward.

I think the whole premise of the article is wrong. Although there are some memes and groups around gaming in general, there has never really been a gaming community to speak of. Anyone who has ever gone to a convention where "gamers from all over the world" converge will know that most of the people there have very little in common except video games. It's like a strange and eclectic music festival where people who love Mozart rub shoulders with those who like death metal. Starcraft players aren't interested on those strange people who play JRPG on their handhelds.

What you basically want is minecraft with EVE like PvP.

But you under estimate the assehattery of the human race. If some guy sees an opportunity to make you life a misery on Monday there will be 100 people on Tuesday doing the same thing. Minecraft with pvp will not work on the scale of an MMO. It doesn't matter what the mechanics of crime and punishment are, so long as the greifers and trolls have a way of expressing their inner asshattery they will use it despite any consequences. Unless there is a completely draconian punishment system in place people will troll and grief to their hearts content.

There exist one simple rule in online gaming: The amount of freedom is equal to the amount of trolling and griefing. If people can build and destroy anything they will destroy palaces and create a forest of giant penises. If people can kill anything, they will kill everything. They will camp the noob area and kill every person that logs in even if it destroys the game and even if it makes their own life difficult. That's just the way people are when it comes to online gaming. It's no accident that the most successful games are the ones with strict rules that govern what you can or can't PvP.

well this game didnt appeal to me and it seems it hasnt appealed to many others too - it is about time companies stopped just trying to emulate wow and actually push the genre in other directions (ideally open world sand box)

I'm not sure if a true open world sandbox MMO will ever be popular because it needs PvP for it to function and balance the game. Not many people like pvp as it causes friction and promotes the less savory elements of online gaming.

Sandbox games without a real element of risk or competition will be a waste of time. There are sandbox games out there and they hardly set the world alight. Yes MMOs need something new, but I'm not sure that sanbox and open world is the answer.

However, I do agree that WildStar is too old fashioned, to much of the same old formula with a higher difficulty setting. They may have been unfortunate on their timing. Five years ago this would of been a sucess, but they missed the boat.

Somebody stupidly thought this was a fun little joke. The authorities take every bomb threat seriously and the law doesn't have a sense of humor when it comes to making bomb threats - not a minor offense. Wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the person that did that.

It will be another 10 years before this really takes off on a mainstream level.

I'm also pretty dubious about this really taking off.  It looks like cool tech but VR has always had issues beyond resolution.  Price is probably the largest, if this launches for $200 it might do ok if it launches at $1000 it's going to be the price of a new TV for a lot of people.  Game compatibility long term has always been a issue with these kinds of things to.  Anyone remember the LCD keyboards that where suppose to be supported by every game in existence by now?  Then there is the issue of comfort long term and finally there is the complete lack of social interaction with those around you.  Will parents really be buying these things to go in the living rooms?  Some might sure but I'm talking in large numbers.  This is the kind of thing that people wear alone in their computer room while playing games on a PC.  And for that audience I just don't see a huge market for it.  I'm sure it will sell ok just being a cool gadget but there is no way it's going to be a game changer anytime soon.   At best it will begin a slow process of mass acceptance for this kind of technology.

It's not so much the gadget, but the vision and idea that will carry the technology to its final destination.  Those who are doubting this technology seem to be stuck in the misconception that a VR headset is the only way to go.  This OR/VR headset is the current itineration or conduit used in an attempt to realize the vision.  This itineration or conduit may not be the final vessel that will carry the technology to its final destination but the vision and desire will persist.

When vision and desire are coupled with brilliant minds and advancing technology, amazing inventions are born.  Several centuries ago who would have ever believed that we would be setting flying vessels the size of 747s in the sky to travel the world?  Who would have ever believed that we would be launching space ships to visit the moon and exploring distant planets?  That and many other inventions seems 100 time fold less achievable or possible than a functional and enjoyable VR/OR experience.  Yet those were accomplished and this one will as well.  It is not that far-fetched when viewed against the already successful grander scheme of accomplishments.

I don't think the issue is whether its achievable or not but if it is anything more than a gimmick. I will probably end up buying it. Hell I bought the kinect when it first came out and I thought that had potential. But what I got was a few really, really, bad games and a stubbed toe.

I'm not saying that VR hasn't got potential, it obviously does and well beyond gaming. The question is, does it improve the experience enough to warrant putting up with it's shortcomings and does the effect or novelty value wear off? Remember that movies first came out people would try and run out the way of moving trains when they appeared on screen. Now we would laugh at that. But does the effect that VR gives you of being in the world last or does it wear off once you get used to it and then it the VR becomes nothing more than another screen as you build up some sort of tolerance to it.

There are other questions such as motion sickness, the effect it has on your vision(if any), fatigue and a whole host of other questions I would probably not even think of.

I kinda agree with the OP. AA is not a great game by any stretch of the imagination, graphically awful, gameplays is a bit ropey, the sandbox elements are just tedium. Just like EVE you will end up paying for multiple accounts just to get the most out of it. Well no thanks.

MMOs aren't declining, but they also aren't leading the way in online gaming.

Casual/Social games are and by a large margin. MOBAs are quickly becoming more popular than MMOs as well.

No problem. Just classified MOBAs as MMOs (as many industrial research sites), and MMO will suddenly look much better.

This is about the death of a style of gameplay. Adventure games died because they were not appealing to enough of the market, the same has happened to MMOs. What MMOs have become may well not appeal to enough of the market, and current 'MMOs' will die as well. MOBA's and other games like them may inherit the space that MMOs once held. Once a genre moves far enough from the mainstream it effectively dies, before you mention Sherlock Holmes again Nari, Adventure games need to be mainstream to be considered a vibrant genre, the days of Monkey Island are gone.

None of this is about making the best games you will notice, it is all about appealing to the maximum numbers of punters as possible, any genre that cannot do that is destined for the dustbin.

Yes .. and MMO .. at least the classical style is out of date, and i am not surprised if it goes the way of the point & click adventure. You do notice that "action adventure" (i.e. games like DMC & Gods of War) took the space of point & click adventure.

Same thing can happen to MMO. So something else will take MMO's market, and its name. I don't see a problem.

Meh, I doubt traditional MMOs (that is, persistent massively multiplayer universes) are going the way of the dodo. It'll probably revert back to the market share it enjoyed before WoW, which won't bother those who are still interested in the genre by that time. And still won't make MOBAs MMOs in anything but marketing name.

You see elements of the old school point and click adventures in modern games, although the puzzles aren't obscure and as difficult as the old monkey islands games. You still combine items, solve puzzles pick up objects talk to NPC's and use them to solve a puzzle, open a door or progress the story.  RPGs are full of point and click elements and so are survival horror games.

Elements of other genres have already entered MMOs with mixed results. However MMOs have a problem that is difficult to resolve. The question of whether it should be a game first or a virtual world first and a game secondly is one that even consumers are unsure of. The more game elements that appear in an MMO the shallower and less immersive the experience is, but the fewer game elements there are the less there is to do. No developer has ever seem to be able to strike a balance between gameplay and immersion.

I'm not completely convinced that this is the future. There are practical problems that come along with wearing a headset that make it rather inconvenient to wear, mainly you are blind to everything around you while you wear a cumbersome and uncomfortable piece of hardware on your head. It may work as a gimmick and have lots of novelty value at first, but do you really want to be wearing something like that while you play a game? For even the smallest real life interaction, like picking up a drink or grabbing a snack you have to take it off because it disorientates you. When you become used to it, will it still be as imersive or will it just be another screen?

Although I'm not totally convinced I look forward to getting one... But what I really want is a holodec.

After seeing yet another "MMOs are declining" post, I feel the need to say, "STOP IT!!"

The genre is NOT on the decline. The game quality may not be to your liking, or the direction the genre has gone may not please (it certainly displeases me), but NOT in any way, shape, or form is the genre in any kind of decline.

MORE players are playing MMOs than 14 years ago.
MORE games are available than 14 years ago.
MORE money is coming in every month than ever before.

If this indicates a "decline" to you, you had best go back to school. You missed a class or two on basic business.

All what your say may be true, but the industry was always going to expand as the internet itself expanded reaching more people than ever before. One could argue that MMO genre is still under performing despite it's growth. Despite all the F2P games and good mix of sub-genres MMOs do not dominate the video games market the way MOBAS and FPS do.

However, I wouldn't use the word "decline". I think the whole genre has stagnated. Nobody, not even Blizzard, leads the genre in any particular direction. Everyone is looking at what everyone else is doing while at the same time comming up with gimmicks and busy-work to keep the players occupied. The fact is we are all pretty much playing the same game we were playing 10 years ago, but with a different skin. Too little innovation, poor iteration, not enough originality.

After 10 years WoW is still the number one MMO says it all. Nobody has the ambition to take WoW on directly and lead the genre. Everyone is following everyone else. Hence we are just going round in circles.

I don't think anyone sensible is arguing that the genre is dying. MMOs have turned out to be just another genre of video games - if a lot more time consuming. I think the disappointment some people have with the genre, particularly those of the 30 - 40 years of age bracket, is that the genre has failed to live up to its early promise. Back in the days of EQ MMOs seemed like the future of not just video games, but entertainment as a whole. Virtual worlds were anything can happen and a place you can be anyone or anything. But the reality is none of these things are possible. We are stuck in generic worlds, with our generic toons doing our generic thing.

I agree that for a new game it's population is low. The fact that you can't see name plates make's players a little harder to spot making it look even quieter if you are not looking out for players.

But although the game has plenty of style and finesse. it's a game that perhaps been released a few years too late. I can only speak for myself, but I'm fed up with content being locked behind progress bars and gear level. That's not to say that I think I should be able to do all things straight away, but there is a point where the treadmill stops being fun to the extent that a game begins to feel ho-hum, stale and tiresome.

I think your anger is misdirected. You should be disappointed in yourself and not SOE. I've made stupid purchases in the past, bought games for full price and only played about 10 minutes of them. I have never directed my anger at the game company but myself. I rarely regret a purchase, but when I do its my own fault. I know the types of games I like and enjoy and the types I don't. I also know that eventually all games will drop in price. I bought into the alpha version of Archeage. I don't like pvp centric games, but I paid way to much for a game that will eventually free to play. Do I regret it? A bit, although I enjoyed the game well enough, it wasn't for me. But I don't blame the publisher, I blame myself for my lapse in judgement. I willl probably make more silly purchases, but I'll get over it.

I've been in a sort of MMO hiatus over the summer months and doing the things that most people do during this time. Soaking up the good weather, going on a trip and mowing the lawn. Although I only been away from my chosen MMO for a few weeks, I can't seem to bring myself to log on. In the back of my mind I think that I have fallen behind the content and that catching up with everyone else has become more and more of a hassle as time goes by.

I'm in my mid thirties now, I just don't have the same amount of time to invest in MMOs anymore. I have a job, kids and a life. A few hours at the weekend seems a lot of time to invest in a hobby now. We all know that MMO's take up a lot of time, particularly if you want to keep up with the content. However, although I somewhat agree that investing time and effort should be rewarded. It becomes incredibly disheartening to find yourself falling further and further behind your guildmates and for it to dawn on me that I simply cannot keep up because I just do not have the free time I had when I was a student or when I was single.

MMO's have become a giant treadmill where even simple tasks such as gathering resources can eat up hours of your time. Raids and farming resources, loot, gear and rep have become barriers to the content I want to do. It's no longer viable for me to keep on doing this. I just want to log on do what I want to do without the inane repetitiveness of gear grinding and other content barriers.

I'm not at all saying that all MMO's should cater for my specific needs. If certain contents requires 100+ hours of time investment, fine, I won't touch it but I won't moan that much about not being able to do it, I do not expect and have never been able to do all the content. But what I am saying is that MMO's should be more sensitive to people like me who only have a few hours a week to play to be able to do fun and rewarding content without the need to commit myself to hours and hours of grinding.

I like action combat... but I begin to get mentally tired after about an hour of non-stop fighting. Perhaps age is finally catching up with me. :p

So my preference is tab target.
