I had a hard time liking steam when I first got it. Back then I preferred the box and dvd-roms. I suppose I still had an old fashioned view of buying games, because ever since I was a teenager I went to the store to browse the shelves for games and try to pick something out that I wanted to play. But games, particularly PC games began to move towards digital downloads. Games like Minecraft and Bastion simply do not exist in a physical form and you have no choice but to get download them.

I don't really have a problem with steam now and have accepted that the pretty much tied down the digital download market. They probably have way more users than GOG, Gamergate, Origin and others have put together. When a new game is released Steam is the go to place to buy it. I can see it as a problem in that Valve has so much power over the marketplace. But GOG and Gamersgate simply do not have the range of games and is not as easy to use as steam. I mean I load up steam just to browse the workshop for skyrim and EU4. It also has tags the browse walking simulators and play Gone Home and pretend its art or browse curator lists and find what Kotaku was paid to like and I can browse games that specifically use controllers... no other platform offers this much.

I was browsing my twitter feeds and found that a lot of internet and youtube journalist were posting the #gamersgate hashtag and discussing gender equality, journalistic integrity, and a whole bunch of other unrelated crap. I thought well this is weird, what the hell is going on? And when I dug a little deeper I find a whole lot of internet drama and amongst the crap it seems that the article posted by the OP was part of the whole "Gamers are dead" narrative that nearly every gaming site posted in tandem. WTF is going on?
I'm hoping for a good cyberpunk game.... I'll be waiting a long long time.

"WHY should I take my time leveling? I mean give me a legit reason..."

You shouldn't. If you want to reach max level as fast as possible then games should provide a way to do that.

But games would have more long-term players/subscribers imo if they *also* allowed people who didn't want to do that other ways to play.

For example the standard fast leveling way nowadays is the linear quest hub game which bores me senseless. I literally have to force myself through them just because I want to look at the scenery and see if there are any cool dragons at the end. The last time I tried one of the best known games I literally fell asleep in the newbie zone (true story) whereas in EQ or SWG I could happily dawdle for years. (I'm not saying they were better games I'm saying they were better for what I wanted.)

(They're not always bad - the main story in lotro and bits of SWTOR were good enough as single player games to be enjoyable (for me) but generally it's not like that.)

What I like is creating different race/class/craft combos and leveling up to mid levels in different zones in different ways and most of the newer games don't cater for that. Now I may be the only one but I doubt it. I think there's likely to be a dozen or more standard ways different types of player like to play but the games have gradually morphed into only catering to one play style.

The difference between EQ and WoW type games is that WoW streamlined questing. At first WoW was praised for its leveling system, it took away much of the busy work and gave everyone the gear they needed to do the dungeons and it was a good system and was extremely popular. But the problem is that it's been done to death. GW2 does it differently but it's basically the same, Rift does it, TSW does it, wildstar does it etc. etc. It doesn't matter if the story behind the quest is fantastic or boring as hell, it's the same boring types of quests we've been doing for years. It's boring. We all know it's boring, games journalist know it's boring, developers know it's boring and publishers know it's boring. Everyone knows it's a problem. The problem is fixing it so that quests and leveling become interesting again. But maybe the problem is so large we should do away with quests all together. This is why many people like me play MOBAs instead.

I think people are losing the basic crux of the matter. Some people will leave ESO the moment it goes f2p, they just don't like cash shops or the business model. They feel the community suffers and the game suffers as a result. Having witnessed a few games go f2p I would have to say it depends largely on the game. Rift and TSW benefited from going f2p but Tera now has an awful community but a fairly decent payment model. Star Wars has a ok community but awful f2p model. LotR f2p model seemed to of made it a worse game.

There are obnoxious games out there that are designed from the ground up to squeeze the most money out you. ArcheAge's LP system has obviously been designed for LP pots. There is no other reason for LP to exist other than to put a pay wall up. That I do find objectionable. I suppose people will white knight archeage, but that game is a borderline f2w whatever anyone says.

MMOs are a constant work in progress, there is a dev team constantly working on the game in some form or another, and they have mortgages to pay. Whether the subscription is worth it or not is dependant on the game in question and your tastes.

That is almost a childish way of looking at paying for a sub. You are purchasing a sub from a company and have no clue how much of that is pure profit and how much are costs (of which only a part ends up being dev salary). Most of the times you also have no clue whether devs are laid off because maybe that company wants to cut costs and earn more profit. Especially with the big game companies.

So stop acting as if you are putting food on the table for MMO game devs with your sub :/ There is no such direct link. As customer only your second sentence matters, because that is the only part you control.

EDIT: Your sub buys you nothing permanent and no guarantees. Only thing that for you as customer works, is determining if you want to keep playing that game coming month. Cash shops. immature community, devs keeping promises, these kind of things are not controlled by a sub.

A company who has invested millions into a game are entitled to use whatever cash model they feel that will get the best return for their investment. If it's free to play and a whole bunch of cash shops, fine. If it's a sub model that everyone pays. Fine. Nobody is forcing anyone to pay, you as a consumer have a wide range of choice of MMOs and you can choose to spend your time doing something else entirely.

There are basic things that I expect from a sub. Customer support, unlimited access to the game, good servers, certain standard of polish, freedom from cash shops and regular content update, including seasonal events etc and a least and measure to fight hacks and bots. Whether I get these things is another matter but when I do pay, I'm also entitled to complain very loudly on their forums and take my sub elsewhere.

I have a fairly high end PC and I have to say, there is no real difference between my current PC and the mid-range PC it replaced. There are too few games out there that would require the horsepower that my current PC has. In fact I could count on one hand how many games will take full advantage of my current hardware and most of them are FPS which I'm not a big fan of. Consider also, for me at least, the most interesting games being released are mostly indy games that will have no problem running on a modern hand-held device. To be frank, I got more of a quality of life difference upgrading my headset that when I upgraded my computer. That's not to say there isn't a market for high end systems, particularly for specialist peripherals, chairs, desks and screens. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to get a good desk....

Well... If ESO wasn't based on the Elder Scrolls lore and was done by a smaller developer it would of scored much higher. But since it is an elder scrolls game and was done by a large developer, costing tens of millions expectations were very high. More so when you consider that the the cost of the "all but needed" imperial edition cost $70 on release AND it being a subscription game. Add all these things together the ESO was facing a huge uphill battle before it was even released.

But Zenimax didn't deliver. When it was released it was buggy and many of the basic elements of the Elder Scrolls series was missing from the game. There was no stealing, no thieves guild and no assassins guild. It was not the open world exploration game that many people wanted, You can explore the map, but you are limited to your level and quests do not take you all over the map.

Music and graphics are all top notch, although I wished they followed the more realistic approach that Skyrim took. Combat is mediocre, but there are a lot of options if you are prepared to experiment. But combat is far, far better on the the controller rather than the dysfunctional keyboard and mouse setup us PC gamers have to put up with. Overall it's a above average MMO especially when you play the fun PVP game.

What stops it from becoming a great game are the multitude of questionable design choices, mostly around grouping and social functions and UI. Although I understand that they wanted to remove the clutter of the UI but there is information that players want straight away. No name plates, no mini map hidden hotbars etc. etc. has the result of players continually opening the menus when before it was there in front of you.

I think OP ,you hit the nail in one area that pertains to myself.

What AA did was take that hand holding and bring it to an all time low

oh, stop being so dramatic. AA's questing is mediocre, sure, kind of meh, sure, but "all time low"... That's just silly hyperbole.

The quests are a simple tutorial and do an ok job of showing you around the world and systems if you want to do them.

I am sure if they were not there you would be here complaining that the game just dropped you into a complex huge world with no support or information.

That's pretty much how it used to be...

That's not only bad economic theory it's bad psychology. The lower the price point the more likely you are to attract bargain hunters.  People are more accepting of poor quality at lower cost as long as a product retains some value. It's McDonalds entire theory of operation.

Not true, McDonalds also get many customers because it is fast. You don't go to a French placewhen you are in a hurry (heck, when I was in Havana it took 4 hours to go out and eat).

There are plenty of other places with better food and more variety that are just as fast too. Self serve buffets for instance. The big difference there is the cost.

I don't know... I think a lot of people go into McDonald's because it's McDonald's. I think advertising and the general image McDonald has created will always make it popular. Like it or not branding has a lot of appeal. I don't think anyone cares if the burger joint across the street is serves better burgers and fries even if they were at the same price. People, particularly young people will want the big mac over the local diner simply because its a big mac.

It's a decent game full of questionable design choices. It's by no means as bad as people have made out and to Zenimax's credit they did try to make a different sort of MMO. Problem is, it's kinda boring...
I didn't really quit, I just sort of lost interest. I can't point out something in the game that made me not want to play it, but I thought to myself "I don't want to spend my time on this playing this game".  When I think about loading it up, I think "naaaah, too much hassle. All my stuff has probably been uprooted, my farm gone along with everything else not nailed down".  Not exactly an enticing thing to come back too, is it?  It's a good game for a couple of weeks but it becomes a list of chores... No thanks, I have a life and I don't want to spend an hour a day doing nothing but virtual maintenance on farms etc.

I think there is something that gets lost in the whole pricing f2p debate. There are hundreds of free games out there, mostly low quality shovelware but one or two gems come out every once in a while. I don't think price matters as much to the consumer as it does to the developers. From a consumer point of view long as the price is reasonable it's not a barrier to entry. What matters is the quality of the product.

As long as the game is worth playing, people will pay for their access. You couldn't get me to play some games even if they were giving them away for free. I'm just not interested in some games. I don't like point and click games, they bore me, I don't like FPS games -  I just suck at them. But I will pay and have spent hundreds on strategy games MMOs and TCGs.  These are the games I enjoy and spend my free time on.

In regards to MMO's I just want to have fun with my friends. So long as we feel it's a fun game and an interesting world we will play it. The problem with MMOs is not the subscription or pricing model. There are bigger issues that MMOs have, that are probably intrinsic - such as pacing and longevity.

The internet is toxic. Particularly if you put yourself up in front of the public. It doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or a YouTube blogger, if you express an opinion on anything, expect a ton of hate and criticism to come your way. Even death and rape threats have become par to the course. Lets be frank, it is impossible for public figures to have a reasonable conversation about anything particularly sexism, terrorism, religion and sexuality. These are some of the issues of our time and it's impossible to discuss them on the internet.

The internet will become less free and more of a closed garden as time goes on. Leaked celebrity photos and terror videos is just another step in that direction. It used to be a place for people to express themselves freely and without the worry of retaliation.

It's not hate. I've seen vitriol towards some games. I would use Darkfall and Star Wars as an example of games that have had hate. If it was deserved or not is another matter.

WildStar is struggling to get noticed in a already crowded marketplace. It's selling point is hardcore raiding. The problem is that hardcore raiding is only done by a small number of people and the rest of the game isn't good enough or different enough to pull people away from their current MMO. I don't think its a bad game, some nice art direction, it has soul and is fun to play for the most part. But it's just more of the same and most people are fed up with this type of game. I don't think the carbine have mislead us, they told us exactly what type of game this was, but people are dissapointed how similar this game is to other titles, but no more than that.

Hope you don't get SWATTED.

Star Citizen funding has turned into a perverse mini-game:

The only problem WoW created is peoples inability to accept its existence. It's been ten years... get over it.

I think its about time that MMOs rethink the map. It no longer serves the purpose it once had. Maybe a world boss in an area and a few scattered bandit camps that spawn randomly is ok. But quest hubs and mobs just standing there waiting for you the galant hero to kill it is just not on anymore. It's silly. Hardly anyone wants to do that stuff, its mere busy work that fills the gap between going to one dungeon to the next.

It's real estate that could be used for something else. Housing, guild towns, castles, farming, manufacturing and a vast wilderness where you can play the survivalist with rare monsters to hunt... the possibilities are endless. Currently the map is squandered and filled with dull content with little reward.

I think the whole premise of the article is wrong. Although there are some memes and groups around gaming in general, there has never really been a gaming community to speak of. Anyone who has ever gone to a convention where "gamers from all over the world" converge will know that most of the people there have very little in common except video games. It's like a strange and eclectic music festival where people who love Mozart rub shoulders with those who like death metal. Starcraft players aren't interested on those strange people who play JRPG on their handhelds.
