Dungeons keepers payment model is too innovative for UK advertising laws.
Last few patches have just recycled old content and added more and more grind. Animus weapon novus weapon soldiery currency, mythology, and now alliance. Grind grind grind. Grind the trials, grind the coil grind bray for the millionths time. It's boring. The only reason I still play is the community and friends. Final fantasy has a tiny scope. The dungeons the zones the combat will never blow you away. It feels small and restricted and you can't walk in any direction without hitting an invisible wall. But you know what? None of that matters. It oozes character and the people who play it love it. Myself, I'm in two minds. In many ways it is the antithesis of what I want from an mmo but it has provided me, a jaded gamer with the best fun I had in a few years.

Personally I don't think open world PvP will ever be popular in MMO's. When you look at PvP games that are popular and "work" it's arena based or in non persistant worlds. They are games that a player can jump and out in. Even in wow the most popular form of PvP is the battle grounds. In EVE, most of the PVP was either dueling outside a station or when players decided to dip their toe in the proverbial water, "go roaming" before running back to high sec when they are done.

The problem is that players want to pick and choose where and when they PVP, not only that they want it to be "fair" that is, no gear or buffs to sway the fight one way or another. Unfortunately that goes against what is the accepted progression model of MMOs. I.e. The more you put into the game, the better gear you get. Although FPS have similar rewards and bonuses for players, nothing they give away as perks or weapons as progression rewards is so far over powered or out of reach that a new player may as well log off or get grinding.

But the most obvious thing is that FPS and dota clones belong to a completely different clientele. The majority of LoL, dota and CoD players wouldn't play an MMO.

Nonsense OP.... The next evolution is zero leveling, zero grinding. When you create a toon, you will have the option of what gear u want to wear. No level restrictions required, just your credit card. Therefore when u log in, you can stand in the main city and look cool. There's your endgame right there.
It really depends on the overall game design but I use skill bars for more than just spells and skills... when I see that I only have eight slots I think "this is just a game".

The goldsellers would then have to rely on selling maxed-out characters, which they would bot to level-cap...

I think the trade of will be worth it. Make gold untradeable, use a supply/demand algorithm for the market and make a trader a proper and fleshed out profession in which you can buy, sell and transport goods across the map and have your own little army of NPC's fleets and caravans. Sounds better than a market place distorted and ruined by bots in which low level items are too expensive for new players.

That's a post from a player on the Russian servers? Where's an official forum post from a US server/Alpha/Founder player concerning hacks and bots?

i dont get why you people dont see that Trion is just a publisher who gets to translate it... besides hosting ingame events n doing increased exp weekends and things like that... all they can do with the game is translate it and translate patches to patch in after XLgames does it, they have no say over changing any core gameplay mechanics or anything like that.. they are just publishing, they are renting a license to provide service to the game. that is all.

IT really depends on the agreement both sides reached. Trion may have stated that they will request to make certain changes to the game. Yhat tells me that part of the agreement between the two is that XL games is being paid by Trion not only for the rights to publish but also to make adjustments to the game. I don't think Trion could request to make any major adjustments but probably just minor adjustments.

From post like these you would guess that the whole genre was on its knees. It's not. New releases are coming out every month, more people are playing than ever and are spread out over a variety of different games and sub genres.

I completely agree that mmo's have not evolved as fast or as well as we would of liked and that for many of us the genre has stagnated or even taken a step back. But to suggest that this is the last best hope for the whole genre is nonsense.

I pretty much agree, many of the mechanics are genre defining rather than exclusive to MTG. They also claim that both games look very similar, which I personally don't agree with, i think they look very different. The artwork and font and overall design of MTG is far superior but they've had years to get it right. Hex has a much more sci-fi feel about it. Personally, I don't think Wizards have a strong case but I'll admit I'm biased towards Hex as a backer.

I see what  you are trying to do, but there is a difference between "mere" ideas, expressions of ideas (copyright: e.g. Star Wars) and patents such as teflon.As long as the courts agree that your copyright is tangible and distinctive you have a strong case.

For the first time in years , an mmo puts the MASSIVE back into MMO. This is seriously a breath of fresh air. From the first hour you play this game, you've got this feeling of freedom, of "I can do and become anything I want and it is great". The world is just so amazingly big, there is just so much to do it's insane. After 3 weeks i'm still discovering new stuff everyday. 

The fact that trion is not going to introduce the gamebreaking patches from korea makes me happy as well. And, subbing players can share their homes/farms and equipment with free2play players which is great for them! 

I've got 2 friends that are really picky about mmo's and they are both addicted as fuck :') I feel sorry for them lol.

** The only thing I worry about is bots, this game requires shittons of mats to craft and use in the 21!! professions. Bots will go to this game at hyperspeed, I guarantee it. TRION, MAKE ME PROUD AND BAN LIKE YOU'VE NEVER BANNED BEFORE.

I agree, how Trion deal with the bots will make or break this game. I don't mind people macroing their mounts and stuff, but if I see mining and farming bots, I won't be hanging around for long. If it was a pure themepark, I could ignore it, but not when the economy is so central to the game, just no way.

On another note, I'm surprised that the game looks so poor despite using cryengine. The textures are just terrible.

FFARR got a lot of slack in my book. The game felt tiny with too much zoning in and out. Combat was slow with a global cooldown of 1 1/2 seconds. Combat was so slow it became very laboured.

But it did have a lot going for it. The world had a lot of character. The aesthetics felt unique in its FF way and it's dungeons and primal fights were fun.

But the grind at the endgame... I still haven't finished my Atma quest.

At least on a megaserver, if you meet someone you like while questing/grouping/pvp/other, you can /friend them and actually find them later. You aren't going to bother if they're from another server - hell, you probably won't even make the effort to get to know them, and the result is the typical WoW dungeon run where no one talks b/c in another 10min. odds are you'll never see those people again.

 

Honestly, by the time a company comes up with a solution, then spends 5-6 years on development, the technology will probably be there where phasing is no longer an issue. That is, if we're not all plugged into some VR facebook lobby by then, like a sick, demented version of the Matrix...

An empty game can't be worth playing anyway.
