General: Why I'm Freaking Out Over SOPA/PIPA
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/21/12 2:42:38 AM
Hmm, that last mesage was posted without me even giving this stupid board software the go ahead to do it. Who writes this stuff?
Anyway... @ BadSpock They're only terrorists under the US governments description of a terrorist as anyone who dares disagree with what they have to say. Look at the US government's treatment of it's own people. The Land Of The Free is looking about as free as China at the moment. You even have police drones flying overhead spying on you - it's only the fact that the American media is in the governments pocket that prevents half of the people in the US realising that they have no more freedom than the average Arab. Western governments send their people out to die fighting against the very types of regimes that they themselves run. Douche bag? I presume that's some kind of playground insult. Not being American and being over the age of 10, I wouldn't know. It is, however, a well known fact that some people resort to insults when they sense they are losing an argument. Personally, I'm convinced that these new laws they tried to get through have little to do with piracy and are just a way for the huge media companies to regain the control and influence they have lost due to the internet. They're panicking and intend to use these laws, or laws like them, to stifle internet based competition. Governments go along with them because they realise other potential uses for such laws. If we fall asleep, they'll quietly introduce laws like these when we're all distracted by the latest American war in the Middle East. We'll all wake up one morning and think we've been moved to China. The real problem is that half of the western world is sleep walking into this. They believe everything their government tells them. They actually believe they have a voice and that these things are being done on their behalf. A final thought: Getting to vote for one of two parties that follow the same mantra every few years does not equate to democracy. Bear that in mind. |

Funcom cant even repair the EU servers too!
General Discussion « Age of Conan 1/07/12 4:17:39 PM
I'm still having fun (when it works) but at the moment it's unplayable anywhere in the game due to intermittent lag. Since it's affecting nearly everybody, it's pretty safe to assume the problem is at or close to Funcoms end. It's been going on for ages - not acceptable for it to last this long. --edit-- Well I've cancelled my AoC account. The game's unplayable and has been for so long that I've lost confidence in Funcom's ability to resolve the problem. Time to look for pastures new... |

Bethesda makes deal with Steam to get your MODS for Skyrim over there: Good or Bad?
General Gaming « General Discussion 12/03/11 5:27:01 AM
Nope. I'm basing my opinions of Steam on experience. You don't really imagine that the people running it have your best interests at heart? If so, can I sell you a timeshare? |

Where does that leave all those people who reply on their service to activate/play games? Having a place to download things from is fine, having to activate things online using a third party when you've bought DvD/CD's retail is ridiculous and will lead to lots of people having coasters in a few years time. Personally I'd rather miss out on a few games than put all my gaming eggs in one steaming basket. |

“Our scouts have found an orc camp not far to the north of us. We need you to go there and kill some orcs, just to let them know they’re not safe. 20 or so should do.”
Off I go to do my duty. Lots of ocs, tightly packed as well, going to be tough. Eventually, with much kiting of ridiculous numbers of adds the job is done. Return to quest giver.
“Excellent work. While you were there, the orcs raided us as well and stole some supplies. We need you to go return to their camp and return those supplies.”
Hmm...ok, well a plausible reason for what looks suspiciously like a repeat quest so off we go. Same issues with packed mobs again but with the added complexity of having to stop for a few seconds every now and then to pick up items. Back to quest giver.
“Good job. We need to stop those orcs thinking they can get away with this sort of thing. Can you go back there and kill the boss standing right in the middle. Oh, you’ve killed him twice already? Well, go do it again.”

City of Heroes: VIP Head Start on Freedom Begins Tuesday
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/27/11 6:34:04 PM
I was seriously considering going back to take a look but two character slots across all servers for premium players? I have more than a dozen old characters, that means I'd have to select just two to play or maybe just one and leave a slot free to create another. I don't expect much for a free acount but just two slots is pitiful. |

I guess insulting behaviour is a sign of the times...probably makes some people feel better about themselves. Problem is, if Blizzard go bust or simply decide that you've had enough time playing their game and pull the plug on the server you'll be left with nothing but an expensive coaster. Bit like Steam really, I don't like the idea of having my ability to play single player games that I have paid for dependent on permission from some fly-by-night company out there which might or might not go bust at any moment. |
|
|
They have to give players some incentive to subscribe. If they offered everything for free, nobody would bother to pay and they wouldn't be able to keep the server up and running. They do offer a hell of a lot for free, not enough for everybody obviously but you get far more for free than some games offer you. |
|
|
I suspect this has a lot to do with control. Blizzard want to be able to pull the plug on 'old' games when they think players have had their money's worth. When they finish D4, they can simply take the old D3 server down and force everyone to buy D4...
It's the idea that I wont be able to play a game offline that I have bought once the developer decides that I've had enough that really irks me. That's totally unacceptable in my book. |

I've soloed my hunter to 55 so far without too much trouble. Things can get really tough when you get mobbed by numerous enemies though, hunters are woeful at melee with virtually every attack they have being interrupted constantly by a sparrow farting in a field ten miles away as well as the mobs hammering on their backs. I recently rolled a warden, probably the easiest to level class I've tried to solo so far once you get the hang of the gambit system that the warden relies on. I'm sure there must be a downside to a warden, I just haven't found it yet. |

I have fond memories of this one. I left soon after everybody I knew also left... I think it had too many owners, each with a different vision and lets face it, the thing is a bit dated now. Having said that, none of the more modern games have given me the feeling of fun I had when I was playing The Realm Online all those years ago. |

As far as I'm concerned, it might as well be US only. I wouldn't touch Steam with a bargepole. Why do they insist on download only crap outside the US? I bet they'll still charge the same amount for that digital download as the box costs in the US. |

Those 200MB were probably files that had changed since, your setup files and screenshots and such things. Having said that, 200MB is hardly a big deal. That's less than you transfer in a single picture from your camera - unless you're using a piddling little hard drive you won't even notice it.
As for forum censorship - it's their forum, they can do what they want. |

Support for some of the older peripherals has gone. No way to get an old scanner I had working...but then that never worked under Vista either. Apart from that and a network driver issue that neither MS or Realtek seem able to sort out, I've had no problems. Setting up was easier than any earlier version of Windows and everything, apart from the old scanner and the network card whch has to be reset every time I start the machine, has worked perfectly from day one. Takes a bit of getting used to after XP but those people saying you should wait for at least a year before getting it so the problems can be ironed out are conveniently forgetting that it has already been out in the wild being tested by thousands of people for *ages*. I don't regret changing to Windows 7. |

Originally posted by KittyChow I totally disagree with your last statement. I play CoH and have been for the past 2 years. Then I tried CO and hated it. Then most of my friends played CO and hated it. That's a game I won't waste my money on.
Well, we're all different and we enjoy different things. I grew bored of CoX after five years and I'm now enjoying playing CO. takes some getting used to after CoX but, for me at least, it was worth the effort. |
