HA! I honestly cannot tell if you are serious or not....

Sure you should get free content from now till the end of days

Not quite, I've played Guild Wars 1 until the release of GW2 and I never had to pay for anything except when new expansion were released, and I would have gladly payed for HoT, and I already spent some money on the in game store for pets and clothes.

I just dont think it's fair to pay 200 gems for each quest of the main story.

But GW1 wasn't really mmorpg as it was Co-op Multiplayer RPG. They had no ways of monetizing the first game since the game wasn't made with cash shop in mind (and there actually was no cash shop at start).

GW2 is MMORPG and it was built with B2P model in mind and they are working on new stuff for the game, since they have nothing else but their cash shop as main source of income and production of new stuff for game isn't free it's only fair that they charge something for what they're doing.

You can always BUY THE GEMS WITH GOLD and as such you don't have to spend a single dollar on the new content, it only requires you to play the game and get enough gold to purchase the gems.

Also the story was free when it went public and you could've unlocked it if you logged in once the episode was released, so that's their way of rewarding players who are active.

You as a returning player can't expect everything to be handed instantly to you besides what you already payed for (and that's the original game content). So you either have to buy it or play the game long enough to obtain it with in-game golds.

In my opinion the living story is not worth a single dollar / single gold coin.

...sooo.. some kid on the forums trolled you?

Got it.

There was a huge discussion on this board last week in response for that post. I'm an ESO player myself and about to report any future F2P troll. That's why I'm waiting for this "news"  Trolling was kind of insane imo and hating on ESO was completely irrational.

That thread was made late friday night to play throughout the weekend with no moderation. It was locked monday morning for trolling.

It was locked down for trolling that occurred inside the thread - not for my post.

Just to be clear.

Again just treat it as a rumor and speculation for now - after the official announcement from ZoS it will become fact.

That's not that hard to do is it?

hm, so it means that console launch isn't far away as well?

That'd be cool, I'm guessing we're waiting for PAX then since we won't probably hear anything till then as it appears.

So what's the huge news, which were said to please subscribers, we were supposed to recieve at the start of this week?

oh no, another thread "this game is too hard"...

face it, this game is made to be hard. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN DON'T PLAY IT!

It's simple as that. This game will be HC and it'll stay HC and that was one thing we knew about WS, before release. So this game will have its community and that community will enjoy the game as it is and not for "what I would like it to be, but it's not atm so I'll whine on forums to cause ripples".

error #1003

tried everything of the above and none of that crap worked. So as usual I'm stuck and I have to come up with some sort of magic to get it to work.

error #1003
General Discussion « ArcheAge
7/17/14 3:59:47 PM

I've tried downloading AA to play beta, but everytime the download hits 2 GB downloaded it tosses the error #1003.

I found a few solutions which suggest adding firewall exception, runing as administrator and the usual useless crap and you guessed it - none of them helped.

I've tried redownloading and reinstalling the whole thing but that error is a stubborn one.

Anyone know anything that I could try or had the same thing happening?

yes, this is the game we were promised.

they told us everything about the game and what to expect and they did deliver it.

Now it might've stranded from that original path and the recent changes with the living story (which didn't really improve) made me dislike that aspect of the game but overal it's a good game I guess.

  • Monthly Sub - I knew my game clock was ticking and that put a lot of incentive on playing this game whether I felt like it or not. It's not the money but the fact that I'm renting a time slick and it feels like I'm wasting it if I don't take advantage of that. Thus my other games got pushed to the side. I don't like that setup. I want to game in the world I want when I want.

Based on this statement i would be more inclined to subscribe to mmos if i could freeze my subscription manually when i know i wont be playing, knowing that my remaining paid time will be there waiting for me to manually resume it again on my account.

This needs to become a thing, IMO.

that IS a thing in the east. They actually pay by the hour of actual in-game time. So you buy a sub for 50 hours, you get 50 actual in-game hours and sub costs are dirt cheap if you compare it to western model.

If every sub game would do that I'd jump on that sub train instantly.

I'd be subbed on more than just 1 game if that would be the model :D

can you PLEASE stop necroing this post?

to be honest, it's not your every day mmo... it'll be a "persistant" world because you'll be able to explore every bit of the universe but there won't be servers like you're used to. As far as I'm aware players which are close to eachother will create a link and they'll be able to see eachother and the one who has better PC and faster internet will be the host of that link. I'm not sure how many people will be able to see eachother at the same time but I'm guessing that it won't be more than 64.

So I'm really disliking that part of the game and just because of that I'm not really interested in it. Something might've changed in the meantime but I highly doubt it.

Originally posted by ElRenmazuo I hope they are ok because Im excited for the sequel to Homefront for its open world near future theme.   You can stop being excited now. Perhaps this can serve as a cautionary tale for future video game developers. Only push the tech envelope as far as the market will allow.
Their problem isn't that they pushed the tech envelope. Just the opposite is true. They founded their company on the principal that they would push the tech envelope and then they let console tech limit them horribly. If they had of continued what they started with Far Cry 1 and Crysis 1 they probably wouldn't be in trouble now. They let console tech hold them back from showing what their engine could really do. The cautionary tale here is if you're going to claim you're going to push the boundaries of what new tech can do you better do it and not just push out console trash like everyone else.

What the heck are you talking about?

The only Crytek game that has had some kind of success in the past several years is Ryse, a console exclusive.

If Crysis 2 and 3 had been PC exclusive and pushed tech even further the sales would have been much lower.

Pushing expensive tech to chase a miniscule segment of PC gamers finally caught up to Crytek and this is the price of their hubris.

And now Homefront is even being developed at all

it says that the Ryse was a disaster and I'm not surprised they didn't sell well since it's only limited to Xbox One which already is in much lower unit numbers than PS4 because they decided to just limit the number of countries they'll launch Xbox One :D

Not sure if they'll recover so easily especially after people are already leaving the company since they have no money to pay them.

This discussion is all academic at this point.  However, what is interesting is that recent trend in mmo's shows that the F2P model is no longer the "preferred" method.

ESO - Subscription.

Wildstar - F2P / Subscription Hybrid. Though it favors P2P if you can't make enoughmoney to buy Credd.

FFXIV -  Subscription

The three Big mmo's to come out most recently all DECIDED to have either subscription or subscription hybrid.  The market is saturated right now and you'd think you've go with the F2P model just to get people to try out your game.  But the opposite is happending.  Some developers realize that if they want to be around LONG TERM, they need a stable source of income to create content.

F2P is unstable and if you have investors to pay back, you may not be able to meet your obligations.  There are only 2 companies who did not get any outside financing to create their mmo, and therefor can take a long term approach to the mmo,  Square Enix and Blizzard/Activision.

Some of you may be interested in reading this article by YoshiP, the producer of FFXIV.  This is why he decided to go P2P instead of F2P.  It will answer a lot of your questions/misconceptions.

This was written a year ago, at the height of the F2P mmo generation.  He defends the P2P model and gives reasons for it.  It's one of many options, but for long term support, it may be the best option.

that's just the problem... with todays trends of giving out new content in existing MMORPG can in no way justify the cost of the subs (because I do not care about the costs which dev has to cover.. I only care what content am I getting for my money). So that means if I'm not getting any new content, which is large enough to call it new content and not just a patch which brings new BG map or something, for almost a year then I'm sure as hell not going to pay for that.

You can see how things turned out for ESO. It's only 3 months out and the game is on life support just because they decided to go with P2P subs. I doubt they'll be able to hold it out for a console release considered how much it costs to have another launch (and looking at the fact that they decided to push it back to work on PC version and try to polish those same stuff on console versions just means they need more resources than they expected and I'm not sure that ESO is providing them with enough cash flow right now).

Now if you really want to you can google the earnining comparison of F2P vs P2P games and see how P2P actually doesn't make a good cash cow. It just puts a paywall between the company and the potential customer. Most people will just turn around and not even take a second look at it, but with F2P games you can offer your players access to game for free and if you do it right people will spend a lot of money in cash shop. That would make a F2P model actually more viable for long term support because those customers which came in train with you on start (the initial rush) and bought the game will eventually leave, as trends do speak a lot of people leaves after the 1st month and those who didn't want to spend money on the game just to see if they'll like it will not even bother paying later (unless they still wanna try the game and find it on some discount deal) because there's so many other games which are on-par with quality but they do not require you to shell out 30$ + 15$ a month to play.

Those people might check out your game if it was f2p and see that they actually like it and they might spend money in cash shop but with f2p the market is way bigger and you do have a higher number of potential spenders. We all know that bad cash shops which just pop out every time you open your inventory or something does push people away, but that's just bad cash shop design and if done well might even result in a major income for a long period of time since there's no paywall for anyone who wants to try the game later on or did just find out about it. So basically from everything I read so far F2P with a good cash shop just seems like a better long term deal where the sub model is basically an initial cash grab to stock on for later and hope to god people continue to sub while you have another few months to fix what you fucked up initially and neglect the content for another year or so.

Subs keeps some of the tards away from the games, that alone makes many games worth paying for.

not true, the most toxic communities I've ever encountered were in sub games.

And yet they clearly put in a cash shop.

So the "truth" of the matter is that these games require x amount of dollars to develop, launch, continue upkeep and continue development.

Arena Net has always stood beside their idea that their games were buy to play. However, the reality is that their one time fee is not enough so they put in a cash shop.

but all mmos have cash shops now - even mmos w subs

None of the MMO's I play have cash shops.

I'm quite interested in seeing what mmos do you play which don't have a cash shop or some sort of a microtransactions like mounts or pets ?

I don't see how it's a mismatch.  This game was touted as a game for hardcore 20 and 40 man raids.  It shouldn't be a big surprise when people start reaching max level that Carbine is going to start bleeding a lot of subs because people simply aren't good enough to do that content.

Good enough or stupid enough?

that's a well made point.

When I was in highschool I used to play games HC and in those games there was room for WOW HC raiding in vanilla and TBC, but now I don't have the time nor the will do dedicate that much time to something that's supposed to be my escape from reality and something where I'm having fun. Not certanly something that's my 2nd job xD

Now there's people who do that and that's the way they're having fun, to each their own. It just means that being a casual player in this game will not get you far in terms of PvE progression and that's just fine if you ask me because the sence of reward for those who do play is that much bigger (and that's kinda the point).

Cash Shop?

They have made it fairly clear in there interviews / on the forums that they will NOT do a global auction house. The mega server setup and a global auction house would destory any possible economy in they game.

"You don't necessarily want to do a global auction house for a game with one giant server because that generally leads to all the best gear being available at very, very cheap prices," gameplay designer Nick Konkle told Shoddy Cast. "A lot of times that can trivialize the game. You cannot have a healthy economy when there are no restrictions on getting the best stuff in the game."

Basicly they did not design the game with a AH in mind. The mega server makes it trivial to geather materials, you can easly just hop between different instances of the server mining endlessly among other things.

Which is really an odd thing to say - It's all about supply and demand no ? I mean, GW2 does this, the trading post is across all their servers, which I guess is now a mega server - though prices has gone up quite a bit since release, but it's still working, and 500 people isn't really all that much to sustain a proper economy either.

And it was the worst aspect of GW2 by a large margin.

You had a select few controlling the entire market on precursors, which trickled down to ever other aspect.  I'm sure this could have been prevented by putting less economic significance on the process, but you get the idea.

that's the biggest load of bull I have heard in a while now...

That's just it, because the auction house is global the few cannot control the whole market... There's infinite amount of gold which can be farmed and that also means there's no telling how many people will get the precursor every day and then that one can undercut you and then another one can undercut that one, and so on and there's so much gold a person can have to keep buying out and putting them for higher buyout (and that depends if he's ever going to sell them at that price and if he's going to make profit since the AH takes a quite a chunk of gold).

Because of this kind of market everything is dependant on supply and demand.

invalid key....

same thing happened on mmobomb yesterday.

Ugh. Steam is the bottom of the barrel, I don't understand why so many people use the bloatware with no customer service whatsoever.

It's an intriguing idea to be certain, but it's still Steam, which to be honest I would subject myself to the terror that is Apple before I dealt with Steam again after the nightmares they put their customers through if you have any problem whatsoever with their service.

Steam is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming.. its an amazing service with so many games availalbe and available no matter what country i just happen to be in and no matter what computer I now happen to be using.. Super fast downlaods, an amazing choice of games, for me amazing customer service, a great community.. hell the list goes on and on... I also cant recall ever having any major issues with steam since I started using it when HL2 was released.

I think without Steam PC gaming be a lot worse off.. I also dont think its blotware.. i mean it hardly uses any resoruces on my computer..  I have also not had any isseus with their customer services in the few times I have had to contact them.

now to the OP..

I dont think Steam Machines will be a massive seller and they certainly wont trouble the main consoles out there, people who dont want one of the major consoles might pick one up as an additional way to play games that they already own.

Just have to say, if you had good customer were extremely lucky.

That is the number one issue people have with steam. In all the other comments you are pretty much right on.  I like steam and have many games there. Just people need to beware, the customer service is EXTREMELY lacking for quitr a few folks.

If it all works right ,you may never have an issue, but lord trying to get help will make you weep at times if it does not work right.

As to OP,  it will be a wait and see for most people i am thinking.  First impressions will tell the tale,.

that's so true.. I had a request once to remove L4D2 from my account (because it was purchased region-locked physical copy) so I can buy region-free version... it took them months to reply, MONTHS!

on topic, I think steambox wont be a major success because it's basically PC (especially if it's going to be priced alienware style - then they can forget about it). I can't see anyone who has a little sence for logic to buy this instead of making his own PC config.
