Definitely.

The best way to trick people into spending money is telling them that it is free with special offers for added value. This is not just for games either.

It is a solid business model.

Does anyone else think 2.5 billion is a surprisingly small portion of the market? Blizzard's net revenues for 2012 was 4.86 billion. It's an apples and oranges comparison but one Corporation's net dwarfs the entire free to play market segment.

It is not surprisingly some of you consider the te possibly that that $2.5b probably made up the rest of the mmo markets that is not named WoW ;)

WoW is probably the only mmo that is making unusually crazy amount of money, a freak of nature, like Apple or Samsung if you use the phone market as example, out of a whole brunch of medicores.

PvP attracts this sort of player.

It is not pvp in itself that attracts this sort of player.

It is the pvp system that they (and many other games) have in place that's the problem.

In many games' pvp server, they always have one of the following problem:

1. Griefing/ganking has no consequences. If it was more like a system like that of Age of Wushu than there will be least of those kind of behaviour.

2. They reward bad pvp behaviour by ranking players and giving them noteriety publicly. If there was no ranking system (like any of those arena rating crap in other games) and pvp is solely about objectives for a faction/group, and reputation is purely from word of mouth/territory gained, than this wouldn't be as big of a problem.

So it is the games itself that wants to promote bad player behaviour a lot of times, not just because it is pvp.

Sometimes those Chinese mythical martial artist names sounds so bad after being translated into English for some reason lol :P

"Western Poison" sounds awesome when it is in original chinese, it is a 2 syllable word. However in English it is a 4 syllable word and sounds like a chemist, lol.

I think the bigger question is not whether console is better or PC is better for mmo.

The bigger question is that isn't console already on it's way out? Does it still have a reason to exist?

With the advent of more powerful PDA phones and tablets that can do everything and even better graphics, and Android boxes that can easily be built with Android OS, why would still be worth the money for the console developer to still be making console?

Use other prebuilt OS and just make games and build boxes saves heaps more money.

I don't see proprietary OS consoles like PS4 or Xbox One lasting much longer... casual consoles like Wii? maybe, but even that can later on be replaced by easily doable Android boxes.

There was never much hacking to start off with...

The problem of Planetside 2 has always been the overwhelming power of armor and air vs infantry. People get killed soon as they spawned because their spawn was bombarded by tanks and planes, and explosive effects can easily go around corners or windows.

That has improved somewhat now so that why the complaint wasn't as rampant.

I enjoy PvP but I can't be bothered with full loot, just does not appeal so darkfall is a no.

Even though this game is trash now (IMO), the full loot aspect adds to the thrill but once you figure out that everything you tend to lose you can get back easily, especially if you're in a guild. It's when you're farming you should heed the old advice of "bank often".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HCe_bPUE0U

Like this guy should of banked a while ago.

Still some people just don't enjoy the constant grind for the same gear... they just want to pvp and nothing else.

The problem is Darkfall is crafting is not very commercially viable with a vibrant market, like crafting in pre-NGE SWG or UO. If it was then the full-loot system would've been a total non-issue, since some people just don't want to don't have to grind crafting or anything else, prefer to outsource that task out to delicate crafters and pay them for their efforts, and just build themselves for pvp.

Why isn't Darkfall a valid alternative?

It's RvR, but the players form their own alliances, and create their own R's to RvR with.

It has city building and sieging, ship building and naval combat.

Your guild can build a city, or take someone elses city.

All the Ex- Warhammer players need to make an all Ork clan called WAAAAGGH.

It would be awesome.

Darkfall is very different from WAR.

In WAR looting people is not one of your main objectives.

Also in WAR it is more about how you use the abilities (ability management), as oppose to how good your aim and how fast you react to swings are (personal skills)

I can't imagine people who main WAR would have a lot of love for Darkfall... it is just so different.

I think player looting is fine in a PvP game.  However I don't think it is going to attract many people whose main activity is PvE.  People who are just there for PvE don't want to lose their hard earned gear to somebody participating in an activity they don't want anything to do with in the first place.  As long as Pathfinder is happy with limiting itself to PvP niche they will do fine, however if they try and sell themselves as a PvE game I think they will end up with a lot of dissatisfied players, and that can hurt the game and the community for everyone involved.

I think if they:

A. Have a really good, dynamic resource crafting system

B. Items have perm decay

Then the issue of pvp looting will not be a big deal. The problem in a lot of mmos is that gears became too powerful and exclusive. If gears were anything like that way it was in early SWG days (crafted, quality determined by the skill of the craftsman, and perm decaying) then PvE will have plenty to do without having to PvP.

Making and selling things can be fun if it was designed properly.

With things like Steambox and Steam controllers on the horizon, with Oculus Rift and crap loads of innovative stuff coming on the horizon, the likely victims will be the consoles over the next 5 years.

^ This.

Consoles are the actual dying breed here - this is because tablets and smartphones can easily replace the type of gaming that console provides. And even if they can't (because of the type of controller/peripherals), PC could've easily took care of that.

Thus consoles basically and other such proprietary OS devices that are exclusively developed for gaming have no reason to exist anymore. They can easily be replaced by devices that uses open OS platforms (such as android) or already existing multi-purpose proprietary OS platforms (such as Windows or Mac).

Console therefore IS the dying breed, not PC.

Eve online= space mmo

Freelance was a exploration/mission running space sim that had an online multiplayer. Eve is all things mmo in a futuristic setting/

Incorrect.

Space sims and mmos are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Space sim just means it is a starship simulator type of game, in which EVE is; it just NOT a "starfighter" sim is all.

MMOs  just means there is a lot of players in the same instance of a gaming world at the same time (a lot as in wayyyyy more than 30 or 50), and that the instances are NOT privately hosted (private as in a couple of friend's sessions).

Star Citizen is not an MMO (as of current understanding) because of that above definition.

pvp?

Nope hardly anyone pvp in that.

The powers make pvp terribly unbalanced plus rewards are not worthwhile. A classic example of a game balanced perfectly for pve having a hard time balancing for pvp (which makes sense, for what it is).

Yeah, compare SOE, a huge multimillion company, with hundreds of employees, to SV with their pocket money and 3-4 devs... How bout seing things in some perspective? In this regard SV are doing wonders with their little game. Sure it has tons of bugs etc, but seing what they have to work with, and how few they are, they do great. But still nice to see that the hate on SV is strong on this site. Keep it up guys!!!

Minecraft is one man company, Terraria is one man company, Mount & Blade was 2-man company. THEY did wonders with their little game.

SV did not.

SV even made indie developers looked bad.

I'm sorry but if you quit this game because of people hacking, you're making excuses. Most of the top players have released pvp videos where you can clearly see that they're better than the vast majority of players. It's possible they also hack when they're not recording, but it seems more likely that people are just complaining, like they always do.

It happens in every game. Watch starcraft 2 streams and you'll see how often these prominent, well known players are accusing other people have stream cheating, wall hacking, etc. But then somebody in their chat will point out that the accused is actually streaming himself, and you can very clearly see that he is not cheating.

People will ALWAYS make excuses for why they lose.

I do believe whoever posts you were referring to the guy has ALREADY mentioned that he is an average player and NOT aiming to be a good player.

He point was there was nothing else to do in game if you an elite or striving to be, and that there MIGHT be cheaters.

He wasn't making excuses (in fact he admitted that he ain't good enough in this game).

However, he's point is right - a game shouldn't be only fun when you are really good at it, especially the fact that it is supposed to be a sandbox mmo.

well, that's one of the reasons Koreans will NEVER make a good MMO; they can't present a consistent world theme. It's as if they deliberately ridicule everything, despite all the hard effort put into the graphics etc...

NEVER is a pretty long time. I would not say that about any nation or people.

There are probably some games that maintain "consistency" in their world theme, but this is also subjective. Consider Aion, Cabal, Lineage 1 or 2, Blade and Soul, etc. What is consistent?

However, I would agree that AA is not consistent to me.

well, perhaps never is slightly exaggerated, i'll admit that. However in all Korean games i've encountered, there's always something 'not quite right' in the theme they are referring to- usually the medieval one; it might be a race that's more manga-related, or how the characters move, the sounds they make, etc.

Makes me wonder why Koreans don't just do dystopic/sci-fi mmo instead?

If they do that then people will have no qualms about any of these bikini and cars stuff breaking immersion.

No, not at all.

Dust is a bad game at its core, being on PC would not have changed that.

Nope not true.

On PC even terrible shooters does okay. I mean, look that that Sniper-Ghost Warrior crap.

DUST wouldn't have done better than Planetside 2 but because of it's link-in to EVE it would've done okay and have it's own following from the getgo. On Playstation however it virtually had to start from zero.

Because game limitations. You can not simply put everything in a game. Have you thought about this at all?

If you are gonna randomly warp anywhere in space you need a full detailed galaxy for it. Ever seen X series? It only has space exploration and has almost non-existant textures and graphics and yet the game is over 8GB just for the space design...

It just can not be done in today's standards.

Not true. Not true at all.

Even with the limited technology Frontier: Elite was able to full system galaxies and able to jump anywhere. SWG was doing some of that was well, not to mention EVE is doing it on a massive scale.

You hypothesis is wrong. You don't render every single object in a space game/mmo. Generally they use the coordinate system and render only what the player can see at any particular instance in time. This is fact. It is written in papers about game development if you google it.

Read the full post please and don't take parts from my post to re-frame it into something i didn't mean.

I already mentioned Elite and all but the fact is that they are full time space games. They don't have planets, dungeons, etc.

Also, you need to read it carefully as well. I never said about rendering the whole Universe which is impossible. I said the whole universe must be modeled so that wherever you warp to, the game is able to model that on your arrival. That's what i said, no game will be able to render a full universe or world at once. They all gradually load it while you are moving, that's no rocket science. Anyone who thinks otherwise shouldn't be talking about game development.

Your point is still invalid because if you read David Braben's paper and notes he DID NOT modelled that whole universe back in Frontier:Elite. A lot of it was calculated.

Do you realise how many star systems was in Frontier:Elite in WHICH you can enter atmosphere or skim gas giants? All of them that has planets. And how big was that game? only like a couple of  MBs. That should tell you that the information of star systems is NOT that big itself, it is the graphics that were taking up the space the other additional elements.

Even back in Origin's Space Rogue (which is even more primitive then Frontier: Elite) the planetary position and rotation around the sun's was kept by the game- everytime you travel back to the system it is in a different position and is time accurate. All these smart guys like David Braben, Paul Neurath and Chris Roberts has figure out ways to deal with these a long time ago.

It is not even remotely impossible. It just takes some smarts. There are always ways to go around things.

You don't seems to know space sims as much as you made out to be and just trying to find excuses for not doing things while there wasn't one.

My only issue with combat in this game is that the combat animation feels disjointed...

Other than that there is nothing wrong with the mechanics or the system itself.
