What I said is completely relevant. No one working in the real word makes 100% profit. Most people are lucky to make 40% of what their product sells for.

^ That is actually exactly right.

I can tell you from my experience of working at a shoe manufacturing company before, even the company themselves that runs their own shoe shop and makes their own shoe, they only make about 10% profit off their sales.

This is because there is a whole swarm of maintenance and running cost and everything they have account for.

The only profession so far that I know of that makes anywhere near 100% profit are drug dealers, lol :P

It's been mentioned many times and says so on the SOE website, that you need to bring your own tools like 3DSMax etc. to create new Assets. They are not selling the "lego buildings" you make since everyone could make those themselves.

I will accept part of that. HOWEVER, they are still providing you WITH a platform in which your creation is useful or enjoyed, and without which, you are just doing it for free pretty much.

What do the running costs of the game have to do with the content an artist creates?

EVERYTHING. Without the great obviously there would be no point for one to create arts FOR the game wouldn't it?

1 * 0 = 0. Simple arthematics.

If you sell let's say a 3D model of a car to a racing game do they charge you for their development cost of the game, the coffee they drink and the water they use?

They already did dude. All costs were already accounted for. When you work in a job ALL costs of employing you has already been considered. If you happen to work in a company an are friends with the dudes that work in the finance department, ask them about company costs and they will tell you a similar breakdown. ALL costs are ALWAYS accounted for in business.

I've said it before, It needs to be inline with other development agreements: 60/40 or 70/30. more ratio to the creator, less to the wholesaler.

But in Landmark the "wholesaler" provides you with the tools and the room to do it in.

How many painter or sculptor out there will get their artist materials and tools sponsored to them, lol? (don't bother answering. I can tell you there is NONE. Even IF your arts has a permanent patron you STILL have to buy your own tools and mats)

On top of development cost, THEY have to pay for the servers, the electricity and the internet cost to run it, in addition to hiring the staff, AND providing the staff WITH the necessary benefits and insurance AS WELL AS basic sustenance like coffee, running water, flushing toilet, etc etc.

In other words, are people seriously complaining about that? lol

Besides, if you make houses in one GAME you are not really a pro-artist anyways - how many people play that ONE game as oppose to buy arts in real life? lol

It is more like doing shizz for fun and relaxation WHILE getting paid... don't see how people can be complaining about that

Firstly, if it is invite only, it is not really an mmo then isn't it? Since it won't be "massively multiplayer" but just a multiplayer game.

Secondly, why are people in this forum keeps on thinking up ways for mmos to NOT make money, lol? Game development is, afterall, a profession and a business. Game developers needs to eat like the rest of us too.

I'm actually more interested in the game now that I know they ban asshats and jerks.

Thanks for the advertisement OP, lol

Strictly speaking starwars is more like a fantasy than true sci-fi.

Strictly speaking, you pulled little factoid out of your ass.

Casually rambling, the movie is space opera but the game seems sci-fi...

a loose interpretation of sci-fi...

...like if you made a really generic fantasy MMO, renamed the races and made the buildings look futuristic.

It seems sci-fi sorta at that point.

With the release of Episode 1, Star Wars tried to "scientificize" the "mythology" of Jedi powers, making the one element I saw as fantasy disappear. Jedi powers stopped being all about "some mystically vague force that linked all things together" to "some specific measurable bacteria" that gave Jedi their powers.

And they realise how wrong they were to do that, and subsequently did not mention that anymore in episode 2 and 3 :P

Sometimes, it was based on a person playing the game too well and being accused of hacking due to killing 8 people by yourself because the players are really bad in Asia since they are playing for the first time, aren't used to full loot, and aren't used to FPS games that play like quake-lite.

lol to all 3 red parts. None of those are true and generalization (may even be a bit of a racial generation).

1. Players are really bad in Asia? Tell that to the Starcraft and CS pro-circuit, lol

2. Aren't used to full loot? There are already several mmos in Asia that are free-for-all pvp (for example AoW) and full loot.

3. Aren't used to FPS games? Once again a lot of FPS champs in pro-circuits comes out of Asia, buddy (not necessarily more than euro but definitely more than US)

Gamers are mostly whiney, little brats who don't even know what they really want. No thanks. As a developer, I sure wouldn't want direct access to all the abuse all day.

Not true at all. Generalization.

If you look at the movie forums and sports forums of the western countries you will see the same whiners.

It is actually the consumers from the Western Hemisphere are the most whiney brunch of little brats, regardless of what products/services it is ;)

The deep hatred between The Empire and Chaos, is what makes 40k what it is. Necrons are just bad guys from space, so is the tyranids. But Empire vs Chaos is brother vs brother, its a fight that puts on display the faults of the human race, and also the biggest strenght. The feelings in this conflict is beyong anything else in warhammer. Now orks,.,,, well, they are lolz,, but thats about it.

Not so much "hatred" per se, Chaos are just manifestation of evil is all (Chao gods are created from bad/aggressive emotions and thoughts of sentient beings, originally, if you are well-versed in the lore).

So you are right Chaos actually had a plot - a intertwining link between Humans, Eldars and Chaos.

Necron's plot is a lot more forced and don't feel fit in (war with the First Ones, Ctan, etc).

I don't know why people have such a fetish for Chaos or the Orks - they are mundane by comparison.

Mainly because Chaos and Orks are more powerful in smaller tabletop combat settings.

Same reason why people don't like Tau as much (because they are not very good if you don't have range).

That and plus the emo/goth crowd like to associate themselves with Chaos, lol

Full loot...one word

NO

Full loot...one word

YES

what scared you, attracted me

the problem usually is, not many are attracted to such games. And those that are complain about low populations.

I don't get why gamemakers only go for the "all or nothing" approach - either full loot free for all pvp or no loot limited pvp.

Why can't they just do a hybrid system that only allows you to loot money that is not in bank / harvested resources that is on the person and not actually allow people to loot gears, open pvp?

I'm sure everyone hate to lose all their gears (because no one wants to gear grind for the same gears, all the time) but people generally should be okay with losing some money or resources.

Don't know what the rest is but definitely the following 3:

AO - most detailed lore of all scifi mmorpgs

SWG - Most "virtual world" of all scifi mmorpgs

EVE - Most detailed game mechanics of all scifi mmorpgs

Why fix WoW at this stage?

Even Blizzard wants it to die... if it wasn't making them so much money still. The engine is so old there is just no saving it (unless you rebuild the thing).

I think over the years old school MMOers has come to define "living world" as:

- Having player run towns and housing

- Having player run vendors

- Having the dynamics of economy dictated by player crafted items, NOT by looted items

- Having dynamic resources that changes in quality/cycle over time

- Having true day and night cycles

Event, while funs, is not necessary "living world" per se. It is more like "lively"

"Lively" and "Living world" are not the same thing. Living world is about social simulation aspect, whereas "lively" means it is robust and has a decent size player population and has stuff to do.

I think it might work.

There are people out there just want low fantasy setting with none of the magic crap - ie. mount & blade but mmo version.

So this idea might be good.

The crowdfunding part, no so good though.

You are probably willing to spend money on games where you pretend to kill dragons or fly space ships around. Why do you think this is any more silly than that?

One thing, if this game does capture its source material well it probably will be much better written than most MMO plots so that's a plus.

Hmmm I don't know where I said otherwise...

I was saying this mmo is a GOOD idea (business case wise - read the last paragraph in my post plz). Not sure where you read I think it was silly in my post... :/

I was merely pointing out that male and female's spending habit are different, which is fact. A marketing survey fact. Females actually are more willing to micro spend than guys (which might turn out to be better for mmos), whereas guys are more likely to spend on big ticket items.

Not that i will play it, or chip in for the kickstarter.

But certainly it is new. The question is whether old bitter MMORPG veterans are going to rant about "cutsy 10 guys" quests?

I don't see their being enough fans of both online gaming and Jane Austin to make it even a niche game; they would need the support of someone like Felicia Day to help market it.

You'll be surprise how easy it is to make "women" money.

For example, why are desserts and lollies so successful wherever they are? Women money. For example, the most expensive rental of any shop in the world was a corner store in Causeway Bay in HK... and what do they sell you ask? Snacks and sweets - to mostly women crowds who go shopping and female office workers who come out at lunch time and after work to snack.

Why female fashion designers can get so rich recycling the same styles, while using pretty medicore materials? Women money.

Why does Sex and the City, 50 Shades of Grey, Desperate Housewives etc. makes so much money? Women money.

Women are willing to spend money on the things they even marginally likes and if they are housewives, have the time to shop for them too.

I think it is a very smart attempt by gamemakers at making new money. Jane Austin fans are possibly the same fans that watches Sex and the City and 50 Shades of Grey, lol.

LOL they will chew up the content and get bored just as fast as the English version. The game will become just as stale in time.

If you pay attention to how mmos r doing in Asia, you will know that Asian players has less attention deficient disorder than Western players and can deal better with grinds (in fact, thrive on grinds).

That's why mmos do better in Asia than US, and also why Starcraft and CS can last so long in Asia (and TV stations can make money out of them).

The only question I have is why is Life is Feudal's logo a knife and a sickle arrange in a way to look like a communist party symbol?

Isn't Feudalism the direct opposite of communism? lol

Just found that odd

Consoles are dying, and it's all the Big 3's fault.

Well to be fair console do cost more to develop compare to PC hardwares or handheld devices and their functionality (hence revenue stream) are less.

Handheld devices can just basically uses the same base OS and just do minor patches to it or upgrade the hardware, release it as new version and earn more money.

Consoles however they have to to release an entirely new thing everytime to want to go from 1 complete generation to the next (for example from 32 bit to 64), and people only buy them to play games, not check facebook or call friends, which means occasional gamers are less willing to waste money on it.

If console dies it is more because of the nature of what it is more than anything I think.
