I agree.

Problem is it used to be defined.  If you look at classic Ultima games they are defined by reagents and Circles of Magic or if you look at classic AD&D games it is defined by memorizations and spell levels.

However along the way MMO has abandoned that for simplicity sake, which in turn makes casters too prevalent and powerful in games. It wasn't supposed to be like this.

I'm just curious, using WoW as an example, how are casters too prevalent and powerful?

In my opinion (just my opinion only), there is 1 major factor - too fast.

Casting in the old school RPGs used to be a planned and premeditated affair. You used to have to plan what spell you will use ahead of time, and it takes time to cast it, and how strong the spells are were not dependent on what "cloak" or "boots" you are wearing, but by reagents combination and things like that.

They made casting too much like physical attacks. They made casting fireballs more like shooting out Hadoken in Street Fighter then an exercise that was supposed to be using your toon's intellect.

Not saying it is right or wrong, just saying I feel it has deviated from what casting seems to be originally about.

As expected ... with the FPS module introduction and demo, Star Citizen crowdfunding again reached a new unprecedented record, this time the 60 M$ mark. No goodies for the next  mark(s) have been announced, but I think we can expect to hear about them when the current PAX Australia is over (like last time).

Those poor Guiness Book guys ... have to constantly revise their crowdfunding records page ;-)

Have fun

Meanwhile, Elite: Dangerous is already fully playable in it's beta 3 form, with more detailed physics, and keeps on adding more stuff, at a fraction of the funding.

I backed both but I think Elite: Dangerous is the clear winner atm in terms of value for money and promises kept so far.

But didn't you feel tempted to get those 1000 dollar ship , 500 dollar ship, 265 dollar ship, 60 dollar ship, etc., with exclusive earlier access available only for real money and no gameplay acquisition option before release, that Frontier offered  in Elite: Dangerous to make their funds raising no matter the consequences?

Oh... Sorry... wrong dimension. :D

:P

Here is Elite's cash shop vs SC's cash shop side by side lol just for fun:

But yet you play the game...  ///rolleyes.

He was saying Trion sucks not Archeage sucks, which is not entirely untrue.

I mean Trion didn't do a good job on Defiance either, but people just didn't know about it because not enough people played it.

All mmo's that I've played it allowed all players to beable to do everything with 1 character. I've always wonderd what an mmo would be like if crafters, gatherers, and farmers were all completely separated.

They used to, before WoW became popular.

WoW's success pretty much homogenized the way MMOs are made, not until now we are starting to get some diversity back.

Lack of competition = ideas killer.

Not this stupid trope again. Stop trying to blame everything on WoW. Seriously just stop.

It is not a trope of blame, it is just the way it is.

It is a fact that lack of competition is a progress killer. Go watch the BBC documentary "Civilization: Is the west history?" first episode it explains why competition is important for innovation.

It is really nobody fault that dominance occurs, just the nature of the beast.

Pay to advance is much more accurate. Its no where even near the realm  of Pay to Win. Too often of late, gamers come to forums and call anything thats Free to Play "Pay to Win" and have lost sight of what that actually means. Buying labor potions is no more than buying xp potions, neither of which is pay to win anything.

At no time does buying labor potions give you any advantage over another player in terms of player stats. No permanent or temporary bonuses are applied, all you do is reach cap alittle bit faster. But the cap is the same for everyone, whether you play for free, or you spend your entire paycheck, you are still limited the same as everyone else. All you do is get there faster. Im sorry to tell you, but thats not pay to win.

Reaching "endgame" faster only gets you there faster. At no time are you "better" than anyone else, or "stronger", or have any clear advantage at all. Your stats are the same, you have the same skills (and skill points) as everyone else, nothing allows you to "win" in either PVP or PVE any better than someone who doesnt pay money. All it is is a time saver. I just dont understand the mentality these days of MMO players who think the guy who got to 50 in 3 hours is any better off than the guy who takes 3 weeks, when they have exactly the same skills, stats, ect. available to them once they hit 50.

^ True

Also, people forget that the stats gap between really really good gear and decent gear is actually quite marginal. Anything Illustrious or GHA/Hasla level or above are pretty close in stats and not distinguished enough to flat out win you a fight because of it alone.

This is no WoW or SWTOR, where the gear gap between tiers are insane.

Zerg guilds is not a problem it is in fact a boon.

Guilds and alliances = social interactions.

The fact that not more mmos have zerg guilds actually means it is not very true to the mmo creed - that it is supposed to be MASSIVELY multiplayer online, not just multiplayer online.

Also no big guilds last forever - when it gets too big politics tends to rip it apart, so in the end it always balances itself.

You won't have the best gear in this game without putting money into it.  I'm not talking about subbing.

You won't have the best gear EVEN if you put money in it.

Best gear in AA has more to do with being a part of a big, useful guild than putting in $$. Putting in money DOESN'T help if you don't have a whole guild of ppl helping each other by specializing in their own field of crafting. There is no way you can craft every single type of mats required to level you out on your craft at higher level.

So seems to me you are projecting your problem of not being social into the problem of money.

I wanted to know, "evening the playing field" against what exactly?

In AA if you are not planning to grab a castle (which clearly your guild is not, since you only have a few people as you say) there are really nothing competitive about the game. It is a game of "personal improvement".

Even if you ARE going for castle it is a game of 70vs70, supergearing only 4 guys out of 70 is like a drop in the ocean.

There are so many ways to get gear that DOESN'T require money (hasla, GHA, etc) that it is ridiculous imo to even use competition as an excuse. On top of that once you get to a certain level of gear there is really not enough difference or ehough improvement in stats between getting GHA gears vs spending 25000 gold on celestial gears. If your skill rotation is correct and you get the jump you will still be killing people.

You are not talking LoL here. This "evening the playing field" justification is absolute nonsense.

I agree that this game would not be fun without land.

Actually it is land OR fishing.

A lot of people who play AA I think don't realise that if you don't get land at the moment, you would want to do sports fishing. Sports fishing will also open up a whole different leveling and economy path for you - and the investment cost into fishing is a hell of a lot cheaper than farming but gives A LOT more xp in comparison - 5k XP a bait taken (per bait taken, as in REGARDLESS of whether you actually get the fish or not).

So join a pug fishing raid (or fish at a fish spawn in one of them inland lakes if you can't find one - of course the fishes pays a lot less but the XPs you get are around the same).

Drill Sergeant: Look soldier, you don't like me, and I don't like you.
Homer: I like you.
Sgt: Well, uh, alright... You like me, but I don't like you!
Homer: Maybe you'd like me if you got to know me?

OP you've obviously never played APB.

Try playing a game where people actually thinks they are gangster and tries to talk in a gangster accent. Now THAT'S bad community.

No, let him share his well thought out wisdom with us. It really is fascinating to be allowed into the inner thoughts of a great mind.

For instance, future generations will be able to hold open symposiums on what the hell point no.2 even meant, and the debates on what the author was intending when he used the word 'especially' in point no.1 will be deep and lengthy.

I can only hope more WoW players stop by to offer their insights into a game they have never played. It clearly is an untapped mine of brilliance.

^ Simply brilliant

This whole thread reminds of the movie A Few Good Men, where Tom Cruise brought in 2 witnesses that are going to testify that they don't know the defendent at all

This is the reason why I am quitting...The game requires to much. This game is for hardcore, its just if your gonna play this casual its gonna take you a LONG time to be competitive

If you have a guild that can just give u everything then you've got it made.

Points I agree with.

This game is niche, it's for the invested player, not the casual drop in for 30 mins a night to run a dungeon guy, I agree. It is 'hardcore' in a way that most modern players won't like. saying that, if you wish to invest and pay in, AA, IMO, will pay you back 100 times over.

Good guilds are essential. This is an interdependent social game that relies on you having a solid support network of good people.

Most mmo's are very social games.

Some are, most these days really aren't.

I reached max level and the guilds i tried are mostly support made guilds. Didn't find many actual players in game. I quit because whatever the game has to offer does not appeal me and the community side is pretty dead.

I have no idea what you are saying here tbh.

I mean, I accept that it doesn't appeal to you, and that's fine, but to make a statement like 'the community side'is pretty dead' is ridiculous to me based on the game I have experienced. I have found AA to be hugely interdependent and community based.

I haven't played a game that is so guild/ social network based for over a decade tbh.

You say the "guilds" you tried? Maybe you should try sticking around, investing in, and progressing with one... Maybe then you would see the side of the game i am describing.

Guild hoppers will never appreciate this game.

I need FUN and clean and decent player interaction.

Well, fun is subjective, so I won't argue that, but maybe for the other thing the issue is you?

Fun is subjective. Its why there are hundreds of posts like this, in spite of the ridiculous amount of hours you waste white knighting for it.  Its too bad you cant change the majority of peoples opinions on AA with sheer willpower, that would make you a Jedi.

There is subjectivity, and then there is plain falsehood.

The following opinions will definitely be considered as plain falsehoods:

1. There are no social interactions in this game (clearly false, because it is above anything, in fact is a guild and commerce game)

2. Not much population, which is also clearly false. Just look at the jury queue alone (NOT the game log in queue) and you know how much people are playing the game at any one time, on one faction on one server.

3. Pay-to-win. Clearly false because there is basically nothing you can buy in AA cash shop that you CAN'T buy with ingame gold (that is, including patron status).

Not saying what you said is falsehood at all, just thought I point this out generally since these are points which naysayers keeps referring too.

Hasla is hardly a grind compare the the real grinds I've done in the past, such as WoW Vanila pvp rank grind or SWTOR Battlemaster randomly-rolled-container armor pieces grind, now those are some terrible grinds.

It isn't even half the grind compare to grinding out WoW Vanilla's Alterac Valley's Unstoppable Force. THOSE were grinds.

Or 5) The game just isn't for everyone and they post their opinions about it.

The best place to check any new release is in it's official forum. This game still has players in the General Forums complaining with little to no in game help among the discussions. Sure there are a few questions about things in game and help, but most are just negative posts.

The problem is the posters here are saying this is isn't for anyone - therefore is blind hate.

If there are that many people playing it still it obviously is for someone.

You know which game has little to no complaint on this forum when it for first released? Wildstar. Look at how bad it tanked.

I n conclusion - the mood of this forum is irrelevant to the actual picture of the popularity of any game.

By the way, the reason why they restore cheater accounts is quite obvious...

Trion are starving for players. Many have left in the first weeks and even asked for refunds because they weren't able to get what the game promised.

The servers are starving for players.

The population has dropped and most I had a word with are bored. The causal gamers did try the quest line way of levelling but after 40ish you are forced to craft or spend much virtual currency to continue through mana / health (FOOD/POTS)  regeneration manipulation part of the game.

It is kind of sad to see a game plummet with population even before the updates come in.

I just checked the server screen after reading this and every single server is either "High" or "Queue".

I logged in for 10 minutes on my old toon on a Day 1 server and immediately got a whisper from someone trying to buy my unfinished house.

Yeap, it's a ghost town Mr. Drama.

Just ignore them.

For some reason there are folks who just like to create threads to rip on Archeage... I suspect those are prolly the same folks who wants to solo Archeage and not getting anywhere... Archeage is a guild game, NOT a solo game.

Back on point, the server is way overpopulated still in fact. The jury queue is a good indication of this (You can only be eligible for Jury duty if you complete the Jury quest line which is available after lvl 30, and you have to be online to queue. there are always close to 2k people in the queue during peak and even at off peak, at least 1k, and that's NOT counting in players who aren't allow to queue for whatever reason such as crime, prison, haven't done the quest chain, etc. So there are still WAAAAYYY too many players per server).

To OP,  you don't know what hardcore is until you actually have the stomach to roll some off-ass spec for pvp lol ( like Inquisitor or Ranger, or any of the tier 5 or 6 specs that has virtually no synergy)
