In principle, you may be right, but Trion is too trivial to take note of. Can you be sure they will even be in business five years from now?

E:D is not really the type of mmo that is going to be "super-popular" anyways that requires "wait and see".

 

It is not a game of a toon walking around collecting gears and doing quests, ie. common and easy to understand.

 

I think it is either you are going to like it or dislike it right away. Not everyone likes space sims (especially siming at the level that E:D is doing). Just like flight sims and mech sims, you either like it or dislike the genre as a whole to start with.

 

It is not like Star Citizen where it is a space opera game and people may like operas if they try it.

 

In another words, E:D is math and physics. SC is art.

I think the drop offline mode is more because of consistent universe (since the universe is grown by the system, not created planet by planet by the developers) more than any monetary reasons.

 

If there is an offline mode that means the universe will be grown only locally to you and the stations the you see and the goods that you see being sold by the station when you switch between online and offline will be vastly different.

 

Right now when you switch between solo and multiplayer mode there is no difference because you are still seeing the same universe, just not other players is all.

Just to clarify on this point:

 

No offline mode doesn't mean there is no solo mode. There is still solo mode.

 

Offline mode was never developed or BETAed in E:D (probably because in E:D the universe is "grown" by the game algorithim itself)..

 

So solo mode (where you don't play with other players) still exists... just that you still need internet connections.

I think even if a lot of people is leaving game no one is going to abandon their land.

 

They will just try to sell it and if not successful give it to friends in their guild.

 

The Alpha access guys still have 2 more months before they need to sub for patron so they are not in a hurry.

 

Either that or bot will gobble it in seconds.

 

So there will never be free land, regardless.

This article has so much wrong in it I don't where to start.

 

None of those one listed are "worst". Totally ignored the likes of Earthrise, AoC and many others that are WAYYY WORSE than any of those listed.

 

Also, APB's problem wasn't launch, it was the fact that it based itself on a non-sustainable payment model where players are earning WWAAAY TOO MUCH in game credits to not have to pay monthly for playing the game at all. They had a decent size player-base but no-one paying to play.

 

Seems the article was written base on a lot of half-truths and mis-information.

Yes, because the DCs caused a lot of unfair castle-grabs and the hacked land-grabs.

 

The big guilds suffered as a result just starts bleeding members who are unhappy with the situation after that.

 

Trion should've taken down the servers when it was behaving that badly during the most important moment of the game and rollback the Auroria claims, but they didn't. Hence the downfall.

On paper, yes. But if your bank account (or cc) is in GBP you do not know what exchange rate you will get and you may have to pay additional fees for the currency transfer so you may or may not save money.

I should add that I plan to wait until release. I am away most of the latter half of December and will be permanently moving back to the UK in early 2015 so will wait a few months before I purchase. Nah I'm not talking about exchange rate here I"m actually talking about the price differences that they put on the website between different currencies.

 

If you convert paying in pounds compare paying in USD you will notice there is a difference of almost $15 to $20 USD more if you pay in pounds. Check out there payment site and give it a calculation.

 

$15 to $20 USD difference is WAAAYYY more than any possible exchange rate differences.

Whichever option you choose, remember to select the option to pay in USD, not in British Pounds.

E:D focuses on the macro side of spaces-sim - with everything be big, space being vast and infinitely generating, travel anywhere, etc...

 

SC focuses on the micro and the story side of space sim - it is more about things happenig inside a star system or planets, and on a more player/personal level, etc....

OP: Agreed.

 

That's why I'm more interested in games like Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen right now.

That would make more sense because I did exactly the same thing too

Don't know what you are on about in regards to gankers, as pretty much no one goes to useless zones (Any contest zones other than Yny, Halc and  Hasla).

 

You can pretty much quest all day without being bothered, especially after the Auroria fiasco.

The only thing I ever noticed is that Blizzard ALWAYS release a new expansion right around the same date where they preceive another major mmo title that might take some of their market share is about to be released.

That's what ALL Elite games has always been.

 

In fact, that's the whole point of this entire genre (which was created by the original Elite to start off with by the way).

 

All space opera/sim games are like that (Privateer series, X series, etc).

 

I think they are releasing the space part (the main part) now and the rest later, which is way better value for money compare to what you get for Star Citizen.

Problem is it used to be defined.  If you look at classic Ultima games they are defined by reagents and Circles of Magic or if you look at classic AD&D games it is defined by memorizations and spell levels.

 

However along the way MMO has abandoned that for simplicity sake, which in turn makes casters too prevalent and powerful in games. It wasn't supposed to be like this.

I'm just curious, using WoW as an example, how are casters too prevalent and powerful?

In my opinion (just my opinion only), there is 1 major factor - too fast.

 

Casting in the old school RPGs used to be a planned and premeditated affair. You used to have to plan what spell you will use ahead of time, and it takes time to cast it, and how strong the spells are were not dependent on what "cloak" or "boots" you are wearing, but by reagents combination and things like that.

 

They made casting too much like physical attacks. They made casting fireballs more like shooting out Hadoken in Street Fighter then an exercise that was supposed to be using your toon's intellect.

 

Not saying it is right or wrong, just saying I feel it has deviated from what casting seems to be originally about.
