Skyforge looks like the first action combat MMO to get it right (From the videos) I've been waiting for a game like Devil May Cry but online as long as I can remember. I've been a fan of Obsidian Entertainment since they were Black Isle studios, and I've loved every product they've touched from Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate all the way to South Park Stick of Truth. I can't wait to get my hands on their latest venture.

Frankly, it's because Crowfall is obviously the biggest topic right now in the MMO world, next to GW2's expansion, WoW's patch (stuff coming Monday for that), and FFXIV news (coming later today).

CU? I'd LOVE to do some CU coverage. Simple fact is they're not talking much right now while Crowfall IS and people are reading every word.

but thats no reason to hype it all the time? it looks shitty. tab target telegraphed combat. makes me stiff as a stock. theres no reason to be excited...look at prtetty all releases last 10 y? look at wildstar, eso and stuff. hype is really bad and yes, i bet you guys were paid to promote this. thats ok but still, cover it without lines as > "crafters really matter" many games have said this? AA any1?

Tab target?

Nope, Crowfall is an action combat game, they have a lot of vidoes of the game on this site and on their kickstarter, I suggest you watch one of them

Edit:  Last time I checked none of these games you've listed had a fully destroyable world with an economy created by AN ACTUAL ECONOMIST.

Just sayin.

Let's set the record straight crowfalls not a mmorpg. it's a mmo

I'm sure I can agree with this. What RPG elements are missing in your opinion?

I don't think you can consider it an RPG when the actual "Campaign" resets itself back to "fresh server" status. Don't you agree? I think that kills the RPG immersion factor. No community etc...

quoted from their kickstarter page :  "...but the characters are NEVER wiped.  Instead, the participants take their winnings back home to the Eternal Kingdoms, to prepare and strategize for the next Campaign."

The DYING worlds reset, your HOMEWORLD does not, It's like if you combined a normal MMO with the ability to go into other short term MMO worlds and come back with the stuff from them.

It's like Stargate or Sliders or something.

Does it seem like this game isn't going to do well at all since there are already better pvp alternatives out there?

Game is almost fully funded in less than 3 days.

Seems like the game is doing great.

No, the "developers" pockets are doing great. Big difference.

Yeah, those developers who sunk A LOT of their own personal time, money, blood, sweat, and tears into something sure are laughing their asses off as they start to work even harder to deliver on the product they've already poured their souls into.

I'm sure their pockets are great after all the money they spent to show us a TECH DEMO THAT LOOKS LIKE A FINISHED FREE TO PLAY GAME.

Yes that's right folks, these guys actually waited to show us something until they had something to show, and you guys are giving them a hard time?

I'm honestly taken aback.

oh so this is the latest Open PVP game that is hyping to the moon and back as the "savior of the genre"

just like back in the day when Archeage was supposed to be the next "savior"

Did you read the interviews or watch the videos?

How is this website 'hyping' something when they are covering news on the subject that they are focused on (mmorpgs).

It's like MMORPG can't win, it makes a post about how Dying Light is a fun RPG that brings new things to the table and refines old ideas and people rail them for posting about a mostly single player game, they do an interview with a company that just pulled back the curtain on their big project and they get called out for 'hyping' it?

I feel bad for the staff here, <3 you guys.

The point is, you have no option. The only option is FFA pvp, like darkfall.  And the loot rate is harsh. There will be no guild vs guild server etc...

A better darkfall with a fully destructable world?

Yeah, I can see this game doing extremely well, might just finally kill DFUW and bring back a lot of people from Shadow Bane and DF1.

FFXIV isn't a pure sub fee game anymore either anyway, they lock content behind paywalls and even make people pay for content that was paid for by sub payers money.

The whole point of being p2p is that you get everything for your sub, that's not the case here.  You pay a sub and get locked out of things.

Now you're just being spiteful and looking ignorant.

There's only one thing that can maybe be considered "content" in the cash shop, and that's the higher tier character wedding services.  Everyone can partake in the free ones, you just don't get extra cosmetic items from the gold and platinum services.

Everything else in the cash shop is either cosmetic (mounts, minions, item dyes) or something that's a standard service charge in other games.  (server transfers, major character modifications, name changes)

It's content locked behind a paywall in a p2p title.

1 or 10 it's still correct.

Cosmetic items are not content, you get the same service you just don't get a few extra cosmetic things.

No way! ARR expansion is gonna add classes that FFXI had at launch? That's amazing!

I hate to interrupt but, DRK didn't come out until the first ex pack for 11, Rise of the Zilart.  Which IS when it launched in the US, but the game existed for over a year prior to that.

Also, not sure how them adding in DRK NOW is in any way a bad thing, it seems like you are suggesting they should have added it in prior?  Most FFXI ex packs added 2-3 classes.  CoP added none.  FF14 so far has had 2 classes with ARR 1 on a patch post ARR and now 3 on this first ex pack since ARR, that is keeping up with or exceeding FF11's class pace.  I honestly don't see why it should mater which classes they add in when.

Funny thing is that if players could stop constantly obsessing about what their neighbor has and how they got it, many would still be playing it. Just about every P2W argument hinges on this ONE POINT, "Keeping up with the Joneses". If what your neighbor has not only ruins the game for you but also requires you to put yourself into financial stress, the core of this issue I fear has NOTHING to do with Archeage.

Here's an idea, play the game at your own pace forget about your neighbor and progress at the pace that your lifestyle and finances permit?!

If the game wasn't very focused on PVP and on fixed PVP for it's endgame (arena and fixed cap numbers of players sieges) then I'd say that you were right.

However, when you are only able to do these activities primarily for entertainment at end game and to stay competitive you need to shell out real money... there is a problem.

Sadly, I think the game will be stuck in first gear since it's using the Unity engine.

Exactly.  Unity is ok for people at their first attempt at making games.  It is not even remotely designed to make a full blown MMO.

What are the issues when using the Unity engine in making an mmo?

Can extra functionality be added or is that not wise?

And what do they expect to be a 'full blown' mmo.

EQ had a whole lot less in terms of functionality than most modern games.  Yet that is what Pantheon is a spiritual successor to. PLEASE elaborate on how Unity would hold it back from that goal?

I think it's because there's not much out there to compare it with at the level they are making this game and no one truly pushed the unity engine to its limits. Probably because its a resource hog at the top end of it. /shrug

With DX12 and all the other insane advancements coming down this year and next I start to wonder what 'resource hogging' programs and systems might not be that way shortly.

Windows 10, new HDMI, G-sync and all the other advancements...

Still I question why Unity couldn't make a 'better' EQ, if that's really their goal.

I still play EQ... I'd love a spiritual successor to the first one that plays similar to how it did in 2000.

You have to be really careful with console versions.  Gamepads have very limited controls, we have seen the horrible UI's that come from console games moved to a PC.

I guess you haven't played Ffxiv or you would be making such statements. A lot has changed since the early console mmo ports.

That's only one example. Skyrim would be the counter.

How is skyrim the counter?  Skyrim is a console game that was ported to PC?   OK lets assume that.  It plays 100's of times better on PC than it does on Console, controls included, you can plug and play a 360 controller into your PC and it works just as if it were in your 360, and you can mod your computer version of Skyrim.

I don't see your point at all.  Skyrim would be another point toward the Console games are great on PC, and their controls are fine too.

All it proves is that Square Enix is willing to try after totally revamping the game.  It does not prove that any other company will be willing to put in the extra effort and cost in offering alternate UI's.

The controls in 1.0 for controller were great, very responsive.  (The 2010 version) So your statement isn't totally accurate.

Remember when this game was selling founders packs for something like $200 and the people who bought it loved the game. This game may have had a really bad launch but where it lost gamers was the cash shop and how land works. Hacking, botting and miss handling the community. Good game bad management of a game?

If they removed labor, nerfed crafting exp, got rid of all the pay to win elements from the cash shop, and added in meaningful hard PVE, and had more than one leveling path for the ONE time you level through the game (how do they expect you to level an alt class?  Oh, buying crafting potions and using labor pots so you can PL yourself other wise it's utterly the MOST tedious thing since grinding solo in FFXI.  Yeah they should fix that too.

Game has bad design flaws as well as being poorly managed.

What not to love in this game? Well yeah sadly its Pay to Win. Labor points keep crafting held back so you can't just craft, making crafting feel like a side game... the best endgame gear is very difficult to obtain, and they make you gamble real money for the privilage of TRYING to get an upgrade. Mounts, Diving, Farms... I can go on and on... but for us its one of the most polished and deep new mmo there ever. We are so happy that we didn't listen to all the hate here and just tried it ourselve :)

Happy playing :)

Fixed it for you.

Sorry, LOVED ArcheAge, was the leader of a 2000 person clan, but they made the game EXTREMELY Pay to win, and after my clan captured and owned most of Auroria when it came out we all quit because there was no point.

Not a MMO and I didn't think this was even close to a RPG either.  Isn't this just a FPS with up to 4 person multiplayer?

Yep and there are better fps games out there.  It just happens to be the newest thing right now.

Disagree, great game, far better than most FPS games I've played. Especially narrative driven ones.

ESO was going to ONLY have a first person view, but then a lot of their NON CORE audience complained and they added in 3rd person view as an after thought.  Elder scrolls has ALWAYS been a first person game, and Defiance is honestly such a generic gears of war made into an online co-op game...  I think you are disproving your own point here.

Actually I think it was the other way around with ESO, it wasn't gonna have 1st person view at all originally

Eh, I think you are right actually now that I did some searching.

ESO wasn't even made by anyone who has touched an Elder scrolls game prior to being put on that team though, it's not even technically Bethesda it's 'Zenimax Online Studios' and they have no overlap except they have the same parent company.

That itself was a huge warning for myself on that game.  A shame I'd have loved a great first person MMO in the style of Elder Scrolls or something similar.  Hard to get that level of immersion in mmos anymore.

One thing that confuses me though is, I never got motion sickness in Far Cry 3 yet it has almost the same movement, like the slide when running and pressing crouch etc. I don't think it is the parkour either, I get it real bad in Half Life 2 which has no parkour.

Pardon, have you considered it may be the field of view?

The game has an adjustable field of view, and I've heard it's actually not uncommon for some people to get motion sickness or vertigo from a Field of View that isn't properly attuned to them.

Give it a google and see if you can't find more information on it.

The hell?

I'm not sure if dying light is an rpg...Though I suppose it depends on how you define that.

It has leveling, skill points to spend, and a story line.  I suppose it's an FPSRPG.

A while back stated including rpgs as well as mmos.  I expect this has to do with the lack of content to report on if they covered JUST mmos.  I don't mind.

100% agreed

This game doesnt belong to at all since its a normal Action game.

mmorpg should be more accurate about the games they add to the list.

Here, let me assist all of you posters in this thread.

Bill Murphy, a well known editor in chief around here posted this blog a WHILE ago explaining why there would be more 'RPG' coverage on this site.

Thanks for reading!
