Skyforge looks like the first action combat MMO to get it right (From the videos) I've been waiting for a game like Devil May Cry but online as long as I can remember. I've been a fan of Obsidian Entertainment since they were Black Isle studios, and I've loved every product they've touched from Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate all the way to South Park Stick of Truth. I can't wait to get my hands on their latest venture.

Nope, Crowfall is an action combat game, they have a lot of vidoes of the game on this site and on their kickstarter, I suggest you watch one of them

Edit:  Last time I checked none of these games you've listed had a fully destroyable world with an economy created by AN ACTUAL ECONOMIST.

I don't think you can consider it an RPG when the actual "Campaign" resets itself back to "fresh server" status. Don't you agree? I think that kills the RPG immersion factor. No community etc...

The DYING worlds reset, your HOMEWORLD does not, It's like if you combined a normal MMO with the ability to go into other short term MMO worlds and come back with the stuff from them.

VERY RPG.

Yeah, those developers who sunk A LOT of their own personal time, money, blood, sweat, and tears into something sure are laughing their asses off as they start to work even harder to deliver on the product they've already poured their souls into.

I'm sure their pockets are great after all the money they spent to show us a TECH DEMO THAT LOOKS LIKE A FINISHED FREE TO PLAY GAME. 

Yes that's right folks, these guys actually waited to show us something until they had something to show, and you guys are giving them a hard time?

Did you read the interviews or watch the videos?

How is this website 'hyping' something when they are covering news on the subject that they are focused on (mmorpgs).

It's like MMORPG can't win, it makes a post about how Dying Light is a fun RPG that brings new things to the table and refines old ideas and people rail them for posting about a mostly single player game, they do an interview with a company that just pulled back the curtain on their big project and they get called out for 'hyping' it?

I feel bad for the staff here, <3 you guys.

The whole point of being p2p is that you get everything for your sub, that's not the case here.  You pay a sub and get locked out of things.

There's only one thing that can maybe be considered "content" in the cash shop, and that's the higher tier character wedding services.  Everyone can partake in the free ones, you just don't get extra cosmetic items from the gold and platinum services.

Everything else in the cash shop is either cosmetic (mounts, minions, item dyes) or something that's a standard service charge in other games.  (server transfers, major character modifications, name changes)

It's content locked behind a paywall in a p2p title.

Cosmetic items are not content, you get the same service you just don't get a few extra cosmetic things.

I hate to interrupt but, DRK didn't come out until the first ex pack for 11, Rise of the Zilart.  Which IS when it launched in the US, but the game existed for over a year prior to that.

Also, not sure how them adding in DRK NOW is in any way a bad thing, it seems like you are suggesting they should have added it in prior?  Most FFXI ex packs added 2-3 classes.  CoP added none.  FF14 so far has had 2 classes with ARR 1 on a patch post ARR and now 3 on this first ex pack since ARR, that is keeping up with or exceeding FF11's class pace.  I honestly don't see why it should mater which classes they add in when.

If the game wasn't very focused on PVP and on fixed PVP for it's endgame (arena and fixed cap numbers of players sieges) then I'd say that you were right.

However, when you are only able to do these activities primarily for entertainment at end game and to stay competitive you need to shell out real money... there is a problem.

Exactly.  Unity is ok for people at their first attempt at making games.  It is not even remotely designed to make a full blown MMO.  

What are the issues when using the Unity engine in making an mmo?

Can extra functionality be added or is that not wise?

And what do they expect to be a 'full blown' mmo.

EQ had a whole lot less in terms of functionality than most modern games.  Yet that is what Pantheon is a spiritual successor to. PLEASE elaborate on how Unity would hold it back from that goal?

 

I think it's because there's not much out there to compare it with at the level they are making this game and no one truly pushed the unity engine to its limits. Probably because its a resource hog at the top end of it. /shrug

 

 

With DX12 and all the other insane advancements coming down this year and next I start to wonder what 'resource hogging' programs and systems might not be that way shortly.

Windows 10, new HDMI, G-sync and all the other advancements...

Still I question why Unity couldn't make a 'better' EQ, if that's really their goal.

I still play EQ... I'd love a spiritual successor to the first one that plays similar to how it did in 2000.

Exactly.  Unity is ok for people at their first attempt at making games.  It is not even remotely designed to make a full blown MMO.  

What are the issues when using the Unity engine in making an mmo?

Can extra functionality be added or is that not wise?

And what do they expect to be a 'full blown' mmo.

EQ had a whole lot less in terms of functionality than most modern games.  Yet that is what Pantheon is a spiritual successor to. PLEASE elaborate on how Unity would hold it back from that goal?

That's only one example. Skyrim would be the counter.

 

How is skyrim the counter?  Skyrim is a console game that was ported to PC?   OK lets assume that.  It plays 100's of times better on PC than it does on Console, controls included, you can plug and play a 360 controller into your PC and it works just as if it were in your 360, and you can mod your computer version of Skyrim.

I don't see your point at all.  Skyrim would be another point toward the Console games are great on PC, and their controls are fine too.

The controls in 1.0 for controller were great, very responsive.  (The 2010 version) So your statement isn't totally accurate.

If they removed labor, nerfed crafting exp, got rid of all the pay to win elements from the cash shop, and added in meaningful hard PVE, and had more than one leveling path for the ONE time you level through the game (how do they expect you to level an alt class?  Oh, buying crafting potions and using labor pots so you can PL yourself other wise it's utterly the MOST tedious thing since grinding solo in FFXI.  Yeah they should fix that too.

Game has bad design flaws as well as being poorly managed.

Sorry, LOVED ArcheAge, was the leader of a 2000 person clan, but they made the game EXTREMELY Pay to win, and after my clan captured and owned most of Auroria when it came out we all quit because there was no point.

Eh, I think you are right actually now that I did some searching.

ESO wasn't even made by anyone who has touched an Elder scrolls game prior to being put on that team though, it's not even technically Bethesda it's 'Zenimax Online Studios' and they have no overlap except they have the same parent company.

That itself was a huge warning for myself on that game.  A shame I'd have loved a great first person MMO in the style of Elder Scrolls or something similar.  Hard to get that level of immersion in mmos anymore.

Pardon, have you considered it may be the field of view?

The game has an adjustable field of view, and I've heard it's actually not uncommon for some people to get motion sickness or vertigo from a Field of View that isn't properly attuned to them.

Give it a google and see if you can't find more information on it.

It has leveling, skill points to spend, and a story line.  I suppose it's an FPSRPG.

A while back MMORPG.com stated including rpgs as well as mmos.  I expect this has to do with the lack of content to report on if they covered JUST mmos.  I don't mind.

mmorpg should be more accurate about the games they add to the list.
