The only thing TCoS is better at than those other games is ensuring you'll get carpal tunnel if you play it long enough. Actually TCoS' combat system is rather interesting but as a whole the game is rather blaise. Especially at the higher levels. PvP can be rather stupid as well considering some classes can go at it until doomsday without being able to kill each other if you have two classes that know the right combos to use. The game was bugged to hell too unless they fixed those issues in the high level content. |

Eh...it's okay. Not really concerned about the lag or the rubberbanding myself since ob just started. It's annoying but at this point not all that surprising. If it's still this way towards the end might be a concern. As for the actual game, I'm finding space combat to be rather fun. I never could get into Eve for whatver reason but I find this game kind of entertaining flying around and enjoying how space combat is utilized. Takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the ship maneuvering down it's fun. The ground portion of the game seems rather awful to me. Granted I've only done a couple missions so far but it just feels uninspired and rather cheap. I think they would have been better off concentrating on one area or the other myself rather than making a hybrid. All in all though the game is better than I thought it would be. Nothing spectacular by any means but not terrible either. |

I haven't even played the game and I am already disappointed...

Heh, if he would have just let the fileplanet one run he would be playing by now. |

The space combat/portion of the game is kind of fun. The land combat/portion of the game seems rather awful to me. Least so far anyways. |

New MMOs are 100% about box sales, 0% about retention

At least with the way some companies are treating the launch of their mmorpgs. I don't think they all feel this way but it sure seems some do or at least think they can keep enough subs around to finish working on the project while earning income at the same time. Kind of hard to argue against it considering how Funcom, Mythic/EA, NCSoft, and Cryptic have done their launches as of late. The kicker is if some of them would have even made a partial effort in customer service and support they would have retained more subs. These companies could seriously lear a thing or two about customer service and support from the likes of Blizzard and Turbine. They may not be perfect and you might not care for their games, but when it comes to service and support those two are a cut above the others from everything I have seen and experienced. |

Why is apparently no one able to handle open beta these days?
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 1/13/10 10:22:35 AM
The amusing part is when I opened this topic I thought is was going to be about the incessant bitching among players about betas anymore. Go figure. |

I decided to d/l before i get my key and it says will take 4+ hours. That's not too bad it is a 7.65 gb d/l a little bigger than we normally see..
It really doesn't matter anyways. I'm not a paid member and I have the game loaded up on my pc from using filplanet now. It took all night mostly because of the queue but I'm ready to go once I get off of work later on today. Hell, if I would have been off yesterday and been able to d/l right away probably would have been able to play last evening. Considering how the first day of open beta goes I somehow doubt I really missed a whole lot. Some people are just really impatient. Not sure what he's talking about with missing the d/l time though. I've always just let these things run and finish it up when I get around to it or when I get home from work. Never had it close out on me or have to start all over again. |

Originally posted by Loke666 I understand that. My point was to do it from the word 'go'. Not move them from project to project. I just think making one involving everyone would make for the ability to have more content, better QA, more depth, etc. which in turn could lead to a higher retention rate among players and one would think a better product as a whole. Then maybe a few years down the road consider making another mmorpg. Meh, who knows? Could work out for them down the road. Truthfully, I'm still waiting to d/l STO myself so for all I know I could end up thinking this game kicks ass. But it has to make you wonder if they had the extra people if they wouldn't have been able to do more with CO or if STO would have been their only mmorpg if they couldn't have done more like flesh out the opposing faction rather than what it's been turned into which reminds me a lot of LotR MvP essentially. It just seems to me it's hard enough for a company to pull off one mmorpg without trying to work on several at once is all I'm really saying. |

How many MMORPGs have you enjoyed as much or more-so than your first?

Seems to me they would have been wiser to concentrate on one and go balls out with it to try and make a real solid title and have a stong service and support staff available as well. If you ask me that would have been the way to go rather than split their development and concetration between multiple projects at once. Then again I don't run or manage a company like this so maybe I'm just being naive. Still, seems to me a concentrated effort on one rather than splitting up your personnel among many would be the wiser and more profitable way to go in the long run. |

Can you really blame them though? Considering the way most treat a beta anymore, and the fact that people buy up preorders or spend money simply to get a peek how can you hold it against them? I'm not a fan of it either, but it works and people buy it up to try out the game or "get in first". Of course, you could always be a cheap bastard like me and still try out all these games for free if you can be a bit patient. It's not like I have a lot of love for the ethics or lack thereof most companies adhere to but I have to say far as the whole "buy yourself a spot in beta" schtick goes I have to hand it to them. It works and people are more than willing to schill out some bucks for it. |

Damn man, that sucks. Eh, like you said I wouldn't sweat it anyways. You know there'll be more keys given out. Good luck. May as well d/l the game if you haven't yet though so you can just get into the game when you do manage to get a key. |

I don't see how that shows that closed beta testing has already begun. All it shows me is they're accepting signups for those that want to be a game tester for when they start closed beta. Although, I haven't been following the game real close since it's so far away from launching so you could be right. Nothing on that link says that to me though. |

What else is new? They always do this shit. At least he deserves a partial pass though since unlike the others he didn't start out by saying, "I've been beta testing these games for ten years and no one ever made you pay to play before! This is ridiculous! Inconceiveable!" Gotta love those ones. I'm sure they'll be crawling out of the woodwork any day now once word ob has launched gets around. |
|
|
What is it with people bring this up over and over again with every launch? This isn't anything new and if you are patient and look around enough you'll find a key to get in at some point. All preordering does is guarantee you'll be in from the word go and dion't have to worry about slumming around for a key at all. Nothing more than that. You know they'll have more key offerings at sites at some point if the ones that were out are all out of keys. They always do. |
