I've never played that RPG. What makes it so good? How would this game be different than.. FF14?

Like all of Tetsuyas games it has an amazing story. The cutscenes and voice acting is top notch once you get used to the British accents. The game keeps you guessing about who is who. What you originally set out to do turns out to be not such a great idea. Those you set out to destroy become your friends and some of those closest to you end up not being people you side with. And it deals with the typical Tetsuya theme of defying fate, creating your own world, and killing god.

The world looks AMAZING. Nevermind that it's on Wii. You climb a dead giant Titan and go through the insides of another dead Titan. I don't think another game has used height and distance the way this game does. When you're standing on one Titan you can see the other one way off in the distance towering over you. When you fall it really feel like you're falling. The draw distance is very detailed. It's also a very open world.

The reason it would be a good MMO is because it is INFLATED. What could be a 50 hour rpg actually takes about 120 hours to complete. The inflated stuff is actually kind of boring. But if you add lots of PEOPLE in the world it becomes social. Instead of trying to figure out where to get a certain item you've been trying to get for an hour other people could help you. Some of the world monsters only spawn under certain conditions so instead of waiting around all alone for it to spawn there would be other people around. Basically it's not a RPG that holds your hand from point A to point B ad infinitum or that tells you exactly how to do something. Communities come up around difficult situations like these when things to be figured out.

There are quest markers but they aren't used to the extent that they are in WoW. I usually hate quest markers because they make things so easy but Xenoblade only uses when you are close to your objective or if it's to advance the story.

Some of the boss battles are very hard. I died a lot :(

There's a lot to go into in terms of skills and other stuff in the game but it's too much!

It just feels like a MMO. So many quests. Combat is very MMOish. Huge world to explore.

I would say the first step would be to decide if you want a mainstream or niche MMO and budget accordingly. Decide what features you want then do some market research to find out how many people would actually be interested in playing this type of MMO and what type of payment model they would prefer.

If there is enough interest mock up a demo to try and get some funding. I have no clue about the rest as I have no experience in SW design.

Well unfortunately I'm not planning on designing a MMO anytime soon.

However, I do know what I like.

Take the single player RPG Xenoblade. Add more zones to make the world bigger. Get rid of the quest markers. Change party size from 3 to 5-8. Don't add instances. Add a death penalty. Leave the world monsters that take like an hour to kill. Increase difficulty of regular monsters. Slow down the fights just a little. Perfect.

+ Then try to survive with a small base of players and struggle to get new subscribers while your current population is complaining that WoW is so much better and easier.

Ideals are good, fact remains that there are bills that need to be paid, in the end: it is a product that needs to be sold.

Xenoblade sold very well. I'm just saying make it massive and online.

Games that are playable for more than a few months are extinct.

And the MMOCasino is born!

"Good evening sir. The customer at seat 10263 will like to PVP you in Blackjack. Do you accept?"

......

Seriously, MMORPG can only go so far. As I had said, unless the player can be transported into the virtual world and play as their own avatar, nothing innovative will overturn the current MMO scene.

ROFL. Wait until gambling is legalized on the internet.

So, since *you* don't like a certain style of MMO, they should NOT exist for those that DO like them?

Wow... The entitlement is strong in this one.

There is virtually only ONE style of MMO that exists anymore. Anyone who likes that style has over a dozen MMOs to chose from. If you don't like that style, your choices become very limited. A WoW style MMO is fine, as long as there are more choices.

I agree 100%. There are many, many more themeparks than sandboxes. I wish there were more choices, but alas, there are not.

Also, what kind of sandbox do they create?
- What kind of PvP? Full Loot? Open World? Flag-able? Realm/Faction PvP? A combination of the previously mentioned? PvE only? A 50/50 mix of PvP and PvE?
- What about Crafting? Or Housing? Included? Deep systems? Tagged on at the very last? Ignored?
- What setting? High Fantasy? Low Fantasy? Sci-Fi? Real world? Apocalyptic with Zombies? Medieval? Survival?
- What kind of combat? Tab Target? Action? A mix of the two?
- How bad is the Death Penalty? Perma-death? Near Perma-Death (like 100 lives)? If a player dies in a battle, do they NOT get back into the fight? Maybe a simple respawn at some specific point, costing a couple of silver pieces per level? XP loss? Stat degradation?

These are just off the top of my head. There is no "one sandbox" to rule them all :)

I don't really get into sanboxes, not that I've given them much of a chance. I'm looking for a challenging PVE themepark.

Why don't you just find a game you like and stick to it, instead of complaining about other games not being what you are looking for?

If you have helpful criticism, that is fine. Saying themeparks are bad or killing the genre is just plain selfish, as this is your opinion and has no grounds for gainful discussion.

I wish!

Helpful Criticism: Get rid of cash shops, insta travel, instances, hybrid classes. Make races matter, not just aesthetically. Slow down PVE combat and make it harder. Harsh death penalty. World dungeons and monsters. Make end game less of a focus.

So.... why aren't you playing Rust or Wurm?

Are those sandboxes?

Planetside

Eve-online

Perpetuum

World of tanks/planes

Everquest next landmark

Vindictus

it took me 15 seconds to make this list of games that are not like wow.

How many of those are heavily instanced? How many have insta travel? How many have races that are only different aesthetically? How many are "solo friendly"? How many have no or a virtually non existent death penalty?

I'll give you eve. I don't know anything about EQNL but I'm not holding my breath.

Your fighting a losing battle here mate. They are different. They aren't all MMOs but they are very different. That said more MMOs could be added to that list.

Well I'm looking for a MMO....

If you insist. The majority were already MMOs even if not MMORPGs but I can add more. I'll keep to MMORPGs instead of MMOs

Uncharted Waters Online

Wurm Online

Darkfall

Mortal Online

Age of Wushu

That's not trying very hard either. It's a losing battle.

Not doing cash shops either.

get it? :)

Xenoblade is a single player RPG that gets quests more right for MMOs than modern themeparks do.

There is a wave of games trying to break the clone WoW genre of MMORPG, when those games come out hopefully there is something good to play. Until then we get garbage like FFXIV, WildStar and ESO.

Maybe I'm going a bit rude on this and for sure my thoughts will not be shared by many but are not MMO the mirror of the actual society??

I can see every day peoples concerns about the actual MMOs, comparing new and actual with the old ones, and this make me think.

And if the fault is not of the MMOs but of this society and kind of living that are rapidly changing without us noticing that??

It seems that there is no longer the same time of years ago to enjoy the personal aspect of the life, the society life speed is pushing and pushing, all becoming so fast that anything is almost unenjoyable, technology ahead of all.

I can see this relation between MMOs and the actual real life, there is some kind of aphaty, some kind of "  I want all with the less effort and NOW! ", there are MMOs nowadays that of MULTIPLAYER have only the aspect that are ONLINE GAMES and that you can actually meet some other peoples in the same instance/world but over that, what??

There is no more enjoy, desire, to be with other peoples in an ONLINE game to get to a reward?? Better do that with henchman than to loose time and meet some real peoples. The era of " I'll do all alone". Is the society the real problem?? Making all apathetic, rude etc. I think we're in the era of quantity's better than quality. Technology must be a friendly and helping thing, I'm sure this way is not the right way, and if this is the way thing are going, talking about MMOs in future we'll see single player games called online because if you want you can connect and meet someone instanced with you.

Producers no longer know what to do, asking peoples to give a hand to develop is clearly a good example, why after the old school MMO noone can name another one that done something like those and peoples talking abut those that will never came back?? Because society and mentality has changed.

In the time of the: " I want all now and fast " is not possible to ask for something of quality, and many old school peoples will continue to live of false expectations because the crowd of the new era " I want to play a MMO in single player mode " is the most.

What do you think about that??

In a nutshell:

I miss it as much as you do. Raising the levelcap in a game where horizontal gear progression was a valid option is a death sentence. Today FFXI has that stupid ItemLevel-crap that killed the game for me.

If they would offer me a new server with 75 cap and no abyssea or adoulin I would uninstall everything on my harddisk for this holy piece of MMO and start anew.

Yeah a official legacy sever would be nice.

Insta porting has it's place, but not in MMOs.
