I played this game the week it was released. Looked like a typical run around and kill everything in sight game except you could control 3 characters at the same time I think.

I played 1.0 and thought it was horrible, I decided to play again but this time on PS4, mainly though I'm back playing for an excuse to use the console that I haven't touched since the day I got it lol. I just don't get the hype over this new version of FF14...

The opening is exactly the same, they still haven't got round to doing voice acting for it and it just feels like they've turned it more into WoW. So far I'm doing the exact same quests I remember doing in MMOs 10+ years ago, I think MMOs have finally started to move on, but FF14 has stayed in the past when it comes to the quests. The combat is really slow and boring still, the UI for the PS4 version sucks, I find it hard to navigate it and working out where to go for a quest on the mini map is really difficult.

There is nothing Final Fantasy about it though, I got to level 9 and I'm bored, I don't want to continue. I don't understand what this has to do with FF? There is no story and everything feels so dated, it is literally like going back 10+ years and tbh I think even FF11 was doing more interesting things.

I hate the new world design as well, all they've done is added loads of loading screens. Why? They never existed in 1.0 to this extent, suddenly cities that never had loading screens in them, now they have 4 or 5. The world is so like a coridoor, there are barely any open areas, when you look at the actual playable area on a map, most of it is like straight lines. Most the stuff in the game has an invisible wall there and I just feel so packed in.

I just don't get it and it doesn't help that the world is dead and there is no easy way of talking as they forgot to build in voice chat for the console version. I bet most people were fans of FF11 and are on the legacy servers, I had a FF11 account but the process they made you go through to make an account for that game, I'll never remember any of the details for it lol. I thought TESO was bad, but that game feels light years ahead of this one...

I still have to question what makes FF11 and 14 feel like Final Fantasy to people? I've played them both and neither are anything like those game and they lack story, people keep saying they have amazing stories...... I've not come across any in either game but the short opening thing that has no story to it.

The story in FFXIV (both versions) is ridiculous. I wont get into that. But FFXI had a complex story. You can view the chains of promathia story at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6slGnVfD0hw. That will give you a glimpse of FFXIs story.

Just wanted to say thanks for your post. I miss old school MMOs in general. I hope you find the MMO you are looking for.

There is no "struggle" in modern MMOs. The only struggle is between who has the bigger sword or shinier armor. The struggle in EQ helped create communities. There are no communities in modern MMOs. Just groups of people mashing buttons as fast as they can or playing totally solo.

Bring back difficulty, the unknown, death penalties, and communities!

WoW might be the greatest calamity to ever befall the gaming industry.

And one more time MMORPG.com attempts to defend a major advertiser...

...by blaming the customers for the poor quality of the product?  Again?

I suspect most of us are less concerned about how feature rich a new MMORPG may be than we are concerned that the "promised" features actually work.  Consider:  Who sets up players' expectations?

--The developers.

--The marketers.

--Their advertisements (aka paid reviews).

--Their shils in the forums.

--Their promises of great and wonderful things that are new and unique so we should spend our money on their product and not on someone else's product.

Do the players force these "expectations" onto the developers?  No.  So, when the players experience something that doesn't meet expectations, whose fault is it?

MMORPG.com continues to lose what little credibility it has left with these repeated attempts to rationalize a bad product.  ESO could have been a great game, but it isn't.  ZOS didn't listen to its testers.  ZOS didn't get a clue from the massive cancellation of pre-orders after the open Beta sessions.  ZOS hasn't gotten a clue from the massive cancellation of subscriptions.

ZOS built up player expectations with a whole lot of marketing hype and then didn't deliver on the product they promised.

FACT:  That is not their customers' fault.

Very solid post.

I second that. Awesome post!

No, this is mostly a load of shit.

Because people see what they want to see.

Here are some examples:  "SoE never listens to it customers" and "SoE ruined EQ"

In Everquest, SoE introduced many things that were a DIRECT result of player requests.  Things such as portal stones to be able to better play with friends.  And PoK was what killed EQ some players will tell you.  however, EQ's peak popularity was actually the years after PoP.

"SWTOR is the least social MMORPG"

Yet its the only MMORPG since LOTRO to launch with lots of multiplayer quests and you can frequently see LFG cries in the chat channels of every planet.

People want someone other themselves to lay the blame on.  the simple fact is our expectations mainly come from within.  Shills on forums?  Thats what, 1% of the posts?  Marketers?  People actually dont know to take marketing with a grain of salt?  Its not like its any different than any marketing anywhere.  No, people have this idea of what they want the game to be.  like the people that try to twist around developer words on PvP in EQ Next, they will be disappointed when EQN isnt ffa PvP and say they were misled, when it was never said EQN will be FFA PvP and it would be ridiculous to think it will be.

I couldn't agree with you more syrinx. You bring up a great point.

There is a disconnect between the actual product and expectations. It is insane to complain about a game's theme park features when it was designed to be a theme park. If the game is a theme park then don't expect it to be a sandbox. I know this is stating the obvious, but a huge segment of this site's community doesn't understand this concept.

Just because it's a themepark doesn't mean it has to be easy as dung.

Let the poison flow.

Hi all,

i've played the beta and what I found?

Same again... same game again...

Quests... go here and there, talk to it and bring it back to there and ... again... again... again...  no evolution, nothing, just another wipe.

Combat with no difficulty

Explorer path: you dont need to explore, just go there and click here... welcome to exploration

Who would have thought that Wildstar would be anything like you're describing? *end saracasm

If it has content updates every 28 days it has to be terrible.

Thanks for the input everyone. Even if you were making jokes!

It looks like I will be trying Wurm Online or Atlantica Online (as soon as I get the nerve to boot up Windows).

I'm concerned that Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy Online have changed (like FFXI and Everquest did) to be more comparable to WoW. If that's not the case then maybe I'll give them a try too. I heard great things about Anarchy Online and DAOC when I was playing Everquest and FFXI.

Every now and then, when I am ranting about MMOs, people will suggest I play this game or that game. I never jump right to trying a game. Sometimes I doubt the game will be right for me or I don't want to boot to windows or I don't understand why the game is different than most of the other MMOs.

So if anyone knows of a niche (it would have to be) MMO that has the qualities I am looking for in an MMO please do tell.

- PVE Focused

-Few to No Instances

-Forced Grouping and dependency on other players (preferably because others are different and make up for your weaknesses)

-Isn't endgame focused

-Takes a LONG time to get to endgame

-Choosing a race has consequences (it's not just aesthetics).

-Good Story

-Harsh Death Penalty

Things that are in most MMOs that I wont do: soloing to end game. solo quest grind. bad stories. quest markers. running around killing everything in a zone for 5 minutes and repeating without having to stop.

If you know of a game that's along those lines I'd be interested in trying it out. Someone mentioned Atlantica Online but I don't know a thing about it.

Doesn't sound like forced grouping to me
I played FFXI on and off for five years.

Let's examine recent entries, keeping in mind that NO MMORPG since or including WoW has classic MMORPG design or gameplay (soloing is NOT an MMORPG staple, it's an abomination introduced going for wider/casual appeal and has lead to the dumbing down of the genre and F2P garbage).

GW2 - not even an MMORPG - it's a single player game with some minimal pseudo grouping (people sharing chat channels and coordinated soloing isn't grouping).  GW2 has a cash shop and includes cash for game currency - the worst of F2P sleaze.

Neverwinter - utter F2P trash and an insult to D&D

FFXIX - a dumbed down and simplistic piece of garbage heavily influenced and crippled by consoles (horrific loading times, simplistic graphics - pretty but simplified to reduce objects loaded on consoles)

ESO - combine weak ES with weak MMORPG and you get a weak game that nobody ever wanted.  If you love ES you'd rather see ES VI, ideally with limited co-op so that it actually FEELS like ES.  If you love MMORPGs you don't really want to see yet another crappy MMORPG based on an IP that shouldn't be made into an MMORPG.

WildStar - a high quality WoW clone with lots of features, and which will have a $60 box price and a $15 sub, yet which also features cash for gold, something we usually call RMT in most MMORPGs of quality, aka CHEATING.  So Frost says WildStar is a premium game but I disagree because NO game that has cash for gold pay 2 win in it is premium, and in fact, is not worth playing at all, just like F2P trash that usually features such sleaze.

(As a side note, it's interesting how much press coverage the bots, exploits, dups, and other crap in ESO get - where ZM is trying to combat it, yet Carbine has built-in cheating in the form of CREDD's cash for gold, and Carbine gets NO criticism for this from the gaming press.  It's really ridiculous.)

EQ3 - some day, maybe.  Looks to have nothing to do with EverQuest except using the name.  Keep in mind that SOE didn't make EQ, The Brad (Verant, bought by SOE) did.  EQN to me is mostly talk and dreams - SOE has all kinds of amazing things they want to do, most of which has nothing to do with MMORPG gameplay, and they say it'll be F2P, which means it'll be a steaming pile since F2P is for profit, not for quality or for players of quality.  And it'll probably be F2P like Landmark is, free to play if you pay $99 to be a founder - a really interesting concept.

Either way, F2P is trash for MMORPGs.  It's a company saying, we can't make a quality game worth a sub so instead we'll make a game for losers who don't want to pay for their entertainment and can enjoy a crippled gaming experience, or worse, a game for scrubs who are too lame to actually play games and pay 2 win their way thru game data.

So in the end, MMORPGs are in a bad place and have been for a while.  There never was anything wrong with the old/classic MMORPGs that featured challenge and group-heavy play.  They were niche games, true, but nobody who loved them was ever saying, you know what would rock, let's get a couple million really low quality scrubs who hate grouping and  challenge and flood our worlds with them, because that'd really make things so much better.

Greedy corporate toads are the reason MMORPGs shifted to attempting wider/casual appeal - something that has dramatically lowered the quality of player and that has lowered the quality of the genre as a whole.  We get increasingly dumbed down/streamlined/idiot-oriented games.  We get more and more F2P trash trying to squeeze money out of those clowns.  We get garbage like WildStar cloning WoW and claiming to be a premium game while featuring absolute sleaze in pay 2 win cash for gold.  We get SOE whoring out the EQ name.

On one hand, I played WoW for 6.5 years total and consider it one of the best PC games and definitely the best MMORPG of all time.  I have no desire to play it now - now that it's been driven into the ground by Ghostcrawler and corporate management and turned into a one of its owned ultra dumbed down clones.  But I respect what WoW did.

But on the other hand, I curse WoW for switching the MMORPG genre away from grouping, away from challenge, away from worlds of wonder and danger that formulated community, and that turned it into a steaming cesspool of greedy, self-centered, non stop instant gratification requiring, challenge hating, babies.  WoW pretty much ruined the MMORPG genre by being successful, since MMORPG devs copy IT, and completely bypass and ignore the original formula for what used to be one of the greatest gaming genres to ever hit PC gaming.

I'm not so sure that it's obvious that people love the WoW style of game since no MMORPG after WoW has really captured the same success.  Following WoW's formula (and IMO, Bliz got very luck in so many ways, nobody will EVER get away with the delays in content and features that they did when WoW hit) does not work for anybody else.  It doesn't retain players.  Because ultimately MMORPGs are about grouping (what ends up being endgame or "the real game" in modern MMORPGs) and it's just not possible to provide enough oomph to solo players.  Period.  So the dumber they make these games, the harder they try to suck in fools who should never play MMORPGs, the faster they fizzle and burn.

It's almost like people who want challenge and to group all the time aren't that numerous and such a genre should be more niche, and developers for that genre should accept that and design games accordingly?  Kind of like, oh, I dunno, MMORPGs devs used to do before WoW ruined the genre?

You're in luck. MMOs are dying. Before you know it you'll be swimming in MOs

Yeah I read about that. I mean Warlords of Draenor. After all these years of playing WoW (with long breaks in btween of course)

WoW is really the only MMO that does it for me.

If you like WoW I don't understand why TSW or FFXIV wouldn't be right up your alley.

Everything said in the conclusion of that review can be said for TSW, FFXIV ARR, WoW, and many other MMOs I have played.

"The Elder Scrolls Online is the empty, dull train ride that everyone feared it would be"

"Shallow, generic, bland, meh, flavorless, vapid, uninspiring, monotonous, ho hum, pedestrian, plodding, mundane, trite, empty, devoid."

No one will except a moderate death penalty and you want to go all the way to permadeath?

It would be great to discover a game offering a better or different multiplayer experience that might be hard to find in MMOs.

This question assumes that MMOs have the same aim as other online games. I would hope that isn't the case.

You sound imbalanced. Try catching a breath, drinking water slowly and calming down. If that doesn't help, try proper breathing techniques. Trust me they work 110%.

After that, think what is it that got you so riled up. Think if you can fix it. If you can't even influence it, let alone fix it, forget about it ASAP. Get in the control of yourself and don't let your precious energy seep like this. Control is good and as sweet as the sweetest of nectars.

After that and only after that will we talk about MMOs. There are things and there are things, eh?

That was awesome..............HAHA!

No, seriously OP, it seems like you are describing a couple of titles that have already existed.  Quite a few actually, but I mean, what is a good story?  That's completely the opinion of the individual.  I completely loved the story of the Erudites and the Ethernaughts in Everquest 2.  Heck, several of the stories in several of those expansions were just awesome.  Meanwhile other people, people who probably didn't even take the time to really read what was going on, had different opinions.

More importantly though it seems that the problems that you are having are coming from what I call "trouble with the masses".

See, there are two consistencies working in tandem between both your real world and your fantasy world.  Those consistencies are that as you grow and become more of an individual your worlds, and the people in them, also grow and become more individual, and in the midst of all of this individuality it becomes difficult to find persons or settings that conform to your specific individual choices on how to be.

The simple solution to this is to either adjust yourself so that you fit more properly into the mass.  Go out and get a football jersey or a baseball hat, take up having strong opinions about things like race, religion, or politics (you really don't have to know what you're talking about, you just have to have an opinion) and voice those opinions as often as you can in as many places as you can until you draw enough attention to yourself to attract other fantics of the same type, or settle down, shut your mouth, keep your head to the grindstone and your nose clean and look down on all of those other people (coincidentally this can also be done while wearing a football jersey or a baseball hat) until you find yourself in a community association meeting talking to people who, like yourself, look down on other people who are not just like them, or, in the case of an MMORPG, go on out there and find the best build for XYand Z and powerlevel to endgame and join the wave of people that help keep this genre and its many titles afloat.

You can do any and all of those things and become a part of the pack, gain accolades, make friends, and live a happy life.

And trust me bro, you have no idea how many of the people there are that do those things I listed above who are not even CLOSE to as into those things as they pretend to be.  Many of them, just like you will be if you choose to go that route, are just following along so that they have something to talk to each other about Monday morning at work/school.

Or......

You can just be patient.  Do you.  And wait for someone that understands you to finally come along.  Which might happen and might not depending on how sick and twisted a little puppy you really are.

No matter which thing you choose though, your anger is mis-placed if you are angry at the games and not yourself and your own choices.

The Dali Lama says...."Happiness is not something ready made.  It comes from your own actions."

Abraham Lincoln says...."Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

So my advice to you, if you are not happy with the way things are going in this genre of games, is to start playing a different genre of games and check back on this bad boy later.

There's always still Pen and Paper, LARP, acting, and writing.

Epicietus says...."There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will."

The translation to that is "If you don't make games and you don't make people then you may as well quit yer bitchen cause it ain't gonna change anything."

I have no idea what you're talking about
