Maybe I'm going a bit rude on this and for sure my thoughts will not be shared by many but are not MMO the mirror of the actual society??

I can see every day peoples concerns about the actual MMOs, comparing new and actual with the old ones, and this make me think.

And if the fault is not of the MMOs but of this society and kind of living that are rapidly changing without us noticing that??

It seems that there is no longer the same time of years ago to enjoy the personal aspect of the life, the society life speed is pushing and pushing, all becoming so fast that anything is almost unenjoyable, technology ahead of all.

I can see this relation between MMOs and the actual real life, there is some kind of aphaty, some kind of "  I want all with the less effort and NOW! ", there are MMOs nowadays that of MULTIPLAYER have only the aspect that are ONLINE GAMES and that you can actually meet some other peoples in the same instance/world but over that, what??

There is no more enjoy, desire, to be with other peoples in an ONLINE game to get to a reward?? Better do that with henchman than to loose time and meet some real peoples. The era of " I'll do all alone". Is the society the real problem?? Making all apathetic, rude etc. I think we're in the era of quantity's better than quality. Technology must be a friendly and helping thing, I'm sure this way is not the right way, and if this is the way thing are going, talking about MMOs in future we'll see single player games called online because if you want you can connect and meet someone instanced with you.

Producers no longer know what to do, asking peoples to give a hand to develop is clearly a good example, why after the old school MMO noone can name another one that done something like those and peoples talking abut those that will never came back?? Because society and mentality has changed.

In the time of the: " I want all now and fast " is not possible to ask for something of quality, and many old school peoples will continue to live of false expectations because the crowd of the new era " I want to play a MMO in single player mode " is the most.

What do you think about that??

In a nutshell:

I miss it as much as you do. Raising the levelcap in a game where horizontal gear progression was a valid option is a death sentence. Today FFXI has that stupid ItemLevel-crap that killed the game for me.

If they would offer me a new server with 75 cap and no abyssea or adoulin I would uninstall everything on my harddisk for this holy piece of MMO and start anew.

Yeah a official legacy sever would be nice.

Insta porting has it's place, but not in MMOs.

And this is where things get crazy. I haven't played ESO but every MMO I have played in the last decade had instanced dungeons. So now comes the only MMO I know of with open world dungeons, which I love, and everyone starts crying about it? Come on there are DOZENS of MMOs with the instanced dungeons you love. Pick one. Can't we have one MMO with open world dungeons?

Guess again... Its not open world dungeons.... These dungeons are all part of solo personal story experiences... You often cant even get in if you are not on the right step of a quest....  There is nothing truely open world about most of them...

i am a big fan of true open world dungeons, but these just arent...    In this time open world dungeons should have open world objectives, but in this game there is only a single solo objective in these small dungeons and nothing else to archieve

there is also atleast one larger open world dungeon in each zone.... Offcourse all the above does not reflect on those dungeons

Forget everything I said. My mistake

Nope. It's an MMO. Open world dungeon where everyone has access to it in the same time/ place is the only way to go.

WoW makes the best WoW clone.

If I want to play WoW then I just go back and play Wow.

If i'm playing another MMo then why would I want it to play a game that is just like the one I just finished playing (WoW)?????

That's what I ask myself every time I buy a new MMO.

they still are copying ideas from soe  every chance  they get . so why say  how wow changed  the genre

eq2  has a panda race  4 years later wow has a panda  race   and theres alot more

eq1 had mounts   6 years later wow  has mounts

so wow just a clone of another game  already  nothing new on  the genre

and people say there cloneing wow  well no there cloneing eq1   and  gamers that never played eq1-eq2   say its a wow clone

If WoW was a clone of EQ then there would be a lot less instances, more group content, like no insta travel, a harsh death penalty, classes that actually depend on each other, races actually mattered etc.

Edit: Also there would be no quest markers in WoW and you wouldn't have your hand held from point A to point B ad infinitum. Dungeons would be more complicated.

Um ... basing a game on another doesnt mean you copy that game 1:1 in all aspects.

Besides, WoW was, as everybody I met who played it at release assured me, quite difficult in the beginning.

When it was first released I went from level 1-40 in like a week.

You measure difficulty by how fast you reach the level cap? Things are worse than I thought...

Absolutely. If I can run around and kill everything in sight non stop for 40 levels it's easy

How does doing the same for months make it any harder?

Time is irrelevant.

Maybe it's not the same for months. You would have to do other things. Maybe a quest took you days to do (and you didn't get exp for it). Or maybe your party you are leveling with takes some tweaking to make it better. So you tell one of your damage dealers that maybe he should be using this skill more or less and see how that affects the party. Maybe you want to try a really dangerous area that you think will pay off. Maybe you pay dearly for trying this (if there is a harsh death penalty).

We hear this term all the time and people fight valiantly to defend their game like being called this is the worst thing in the world. To me defining the WoW clone relies on understanding how WoW changed the genre.

1. Quest based leveling. Quests existed before WoW but it was the first major title where you could spend 100% of your time leveling by doing quests.

2. Instanced group content. Again WoW was not the first game to use instancing but it was the first major title (The Realm doesn't count~) that put you almost exclusively in an instance for any group based content.

3. Easy solo mob with specifically designated harder mobs for groups. EQ, DAOC, AC etc all had different difficulty levels for solo mobs but WoW was the first to add the elite style mob for all group based mobs. Other games used that for a few bosses etc but in most games before WoW a mob in a dungeon was the same as one outside. This meant you could tool around in a dungeon solo or in a group of 2 etc. It was also the start of the no respawn style dungeon. What this did was dumb down the solo experience while also restricting dungeons to groups only, this is one of the worst changes in the genre that has really killed the dungeon experience imo.

4. Instanced PvP. Before WoW PvP was part of the open world even if it was in only restricted servers or restricted zones. WoW started pushing it off into its own box where it has no meaning to the greater world anymore.

Later WoW also added extremely linear quests so if you go that path you are a late WoW clone.

So if you have instance based PvP, quest based leveling, dungeon mobs that are harder than a normal mob and solo mobs that are a joke to kill, a fantasy based theme and you push groups into instances you are a WoW clone imo. You can mess with the character progression, the combat etc and that doesn't matter, you are still a clone in my personal book.

Definitely in the right direction. A minor death penalty too.

1. Instances

2. Abuse of Insta Travel

3. Meaningless Death Penalty

4. Making it too Solo Friendly

5. Spamming Buttons During Combat

There are NO hardcore PVE MMOs anymore. All of the "Casual" players are forcing their gameplay style on me. This is discrimination! I'm a minority and I have rights too!!!!!

Because most have failed to do it right. Look at Warhammer Online...

I also look at TSW, SWTOR, FFXI (now), ARR, some game I forgot the name of (started on a pirate ship), Rift, and many other games I've forgotten the name of.

Should developers continue to design content for the PvE only player?

I don't think they should. The PvE only player is the creative roadblock in mmorpg design. From resource gathering to trade, to territory control, they have all been designed, governed or gutted by the demands of the PvE only player.

There can be no transit of commerce because of the PvE only player. Social systems are left without politics because of the PvE only player. Wealth  creation systems are designed with the PvE only player in mind. This way of developing mmorpgs has lead to the creation of sterile worlds, lacking consequence.

Developing mmorpgs for the pvp/pve player will allow for the creation of any and all systems. Systems that can then be smoothed for balance with moderation in mind for the majority of players.

I have a dream that one day, pve and pvp will be things of the past! Tha... I'll stop here.

The PVE is terrible in most MMOs.
