I don't agree. Xenoblade is a single player RPG but it is very circular or recursive. It's impossible to do everything the game has to offer or to understand the story in one play through. I suppose Chrono Cross is circular also.

Just because a MMORPG has a linear story or guides the players doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.

Yes because two people playing a game is a MMORPG

If you have to add a new expansion every 6 months then the game is fundamentally flawed.

 

As Wizardry and elocke said, FFXI got a few things right.

Since most MMOs have been reduced to mostly only playing with a small group of people I don't see the need for a subscription fee either.

This is what it is all about. What the genre needs to capture this magic again I do not know, I just know it doesn't have it.

There are no epic PVE moments in modern MMOs

Take that few thousand you have to a casino. Go to a blackjack table. Play 500 a hand. Hope for the best. If you lose it all then, hey, at least you tried. If you double or triple you're money, you can always come back the next day to lose it all.

You're not going to be able to play it. I'd just forget about it and move onto something else.
Graphics could never make me hate or love a game. But, everything else being equal between the two games, I would choose the more realistic graphics.

Trinity is perfect, it allows interdependence between classes to exist because classes are strictly defined, and the gameplay allows for keyboard communication during fights.

Pulling and CC should be part of trinity systems.

 

In fact Trinity meant Warrior / Enchanter / Cleric.

Trinity never meant Tank / Healer / DPS. The word trinity I first saw being used in EQ, and it came from Cleric, War, Enc, because those classes were at that time in the game necesary to defeat a lot of the content. So they became the building blocks you built your group on. Especially when you had to defeat some of the flagging missions from Breakdown in communication in Gates of Discord. We called those group set-ups trinity groups.

 

EQ was never that rigid to begin with, there wasn't a real trinity system in the beginning, we did have tanks and healers and DPS, but pulling was easier, there was less CC needed, and the content wasn't that difficult in the beginning.

When PoP and espcially GoD came around, you needed to set up specific type of groups, built around specific classes, that is when trinity systems came about. You started to build your group around certain classes, pulling became important, and everyone got a really clear defined role in the game.

Interdependence in GoD was very important, each class had a role and everyone knew their role.

 

It was whose clearly defined roles that allowed for really difficult raids and allowed for content that was highly tuned and had many many players and still was not zerg. 54 man raids were not zerg raids, and the reason was the clearly defined roles. Before the roles were that defined, EQ actually did have many raids that you could zerg, especially in the beginning. The more defined the class roles became, the more interestint the raids became, and the less zerg was possible.

Trinity systems have always revolved around control and stability in a group, non-trinity systems often rely, or evolve into zerg gameplay.
