They all throw their resources/teams/money on ONE huge game together? One to rule them all?

Creating a game world that is so revolutionary, deep and huge it shatters everything else out there in terms of content, features and size?

Creating a game that is so magnificent that it can only rule the planet for the next 20 years?

A game that launches with so much launch content it would take years to even get to some sort of "end game"?

All it would be is the most generic game to ever be conceived.

The OP wants a good game.  Most people enjoy mediocre games.  Sad world...

Give us the tools needed to find others for like minded content so players can work together and make friends on a server.  No mega servers, no mega nothing......Also make the game hard !

Give us open world PvP like Blizzard did Wayyyy back in 2004.

Don't tell us where everything is before launch as a marketing tool.  Let us find it ourselves and teach each other.  Sure there will be " how to play " Youtubes soon after but still leave us alone.

Most of all NO F2P OR CASH GRABS AT ALL !........$60 for the game $15 a month.

Important :

I would make a poll for this post, but the FREE PLAYERS here would vote no way............And I would guess most here on this site are FREE PLAYERS.

As it stands, Off-line games are getting better and mmos are going down hill fast.

Not my ideal game but sounds better than 95% of the stuff released in the past decade.

What are you talking about? MMOs are fun to those who are playing them ... otherwise why would they play?

Obviously no MMO can be fun to everyone since fun is subjective.

But there are plenty of MMOs like Marvel Heroes and Warframe that are fun to me. Whether devs make a quick or slow buck is relevant. The only thing relevant to me .. is whether a game is fun or not.

Yes, people are ONLY playing MMO's because of Fun™.

Nobody is playing MMO's due to addictive nature, or because of a sunk cost fallacy or anything like that, its ONLY because of Fun™.

Ewwww someone who makes sense AND quotes Nietzsche.  Please pray tell what your favorite MMO is.

There are plenty of MMOs making money and new MMOs coming out.  Too bad they're all garbage.
A MMO where you run from zone to zone killing everything in sight.  You solo to end game.  At end game you only show off the best gear you get from raids and such.  Every quest is spelled out for you.  Go here, do that, and you'll be rewarded.  Madness.
This is a silly topic and question.  If I wanted to play street fighter I'd play street fighter.

The weird thing about EQNext is that nothing at it's core is like EQ.

EQ Forced grouping...EQNext does not

EQ Trinity.....EQNext is not

EQ slow combat.......EQNext is action spam

EQ tab target....EQNext is not

EQ strictly defined class roles.........EQNext loosely defined multiclassing

It shouldn't even be called EQ. It's like calling a new Hello Kitty game, Ninja Gaiden Next, as if Ninja Gaiden fans are going to be happy with a Hello Kitty game.

Everything you just said about EQN can be applied to WoW.  And some people call WoW a EQ clone...

Xenoblade Chronicles X...............

It WILL have an online component. :\

It would make the F2P casino worse than casino gambling, like the person above said, since you can not win money in the cash shop that is not regulated as people pointed out, but you can win money in the real casino.

You've lost me - are we still talking about MMOs like Vindictus, LoTRO, EQ, PS2, NWN etc... ?

Or are we talking about some Gambling MMO that I have never heard of?

Again in what MMO (that's covered on this site) can you spend real money and win real money as part of regular gameplay?

How can an in-game "casino" that doesn't take real money and doesn't payout real money fall under gambling laws?

Dragons Tale :|

You buy the currency in the game with real money.

Casinos and MMOs are in no way related whatsoever.

Vindictus MMO cash shop:

Real Casino:

Wow .. graphics =! actual mechanics of gambling

The key differentiator remains this:

1. Casinos are in fact gambling establishments where you lose and win actual money. To play ANY game in a casino it in fact requires spending real money and winnings are paid out again in real money.

2. What MMO has the mechanic of winning real money as part of regular gameplay (not talking about e-sport competitions obviously)

You mentioned Vindictus - can you spend $10 in Vindictus and win $100 as a part of 10x payout in-game? Does this exist?

2.  Dragons Tale

Then those are gambling games - again what relevance do those have with F2P MMORPGs?

They will be "free" to play.

Casinos and MMOs are in no way related whatsoever. One is a direct gambling using money to make more money  - the other is pure entertainment.

I have heard basically one excuse that has any merit but i still don't agree with it.Some devs like to say it allows gamer's to pay for the parts of game they want to play. This is far from the truth because they are not selling parts of a game but items like bags, mounts,xp pots ect ect.

Some crappy F2P implementations are actually selling parts of the game - IMO this is a terrible model.

Also gaming is not like real life where it is a dog eat world, you EXPECT that everyone is treated fairly.

Expecting farirness in games is as naive as expecting fairness in real life.

However what devs like to do is sell really cool items, tons buy them up them come out with even cooler items making those last ones obsolete and not as desirable anymore.it is a form of reeling, suckering you in to keep spending more and more.

And P2P games don't do this with expansions that have FAR superior items - look at WoW - again this is not a F2P game issue - P2P games do this to sell new expansions to players.

What the whole system has done to gaming  is allow developers to make more shallow games, put less cost and effort into the game that way they can support free logins.Their upside is that they can go far above the nominal 15 dollar sub fee,in many cases they have taken 100/200/500+ dollars in one scoop from fellow gamer's.

This is a very smart business model - as not all gamers have the same disposable income. Wealth is NOT distributed equally in the real world - there are 1% gamers that can drop $100K every month on a game and not even blink an eye. Putting in 1%s in the same bucket with everyone is simply lost potential revenue.

A perfect example is Magicamy from Hearthstone.HS acts like this totally free game however we all know people desire those Legends and gold cards.Well MagicAmy has an entire collection of gold cards, that is into the multiple thousands of dollars in one full year.

Again this is an issue of disposable income - if someone can afford to spend 1000s on virtual cards for entertainment purposes - what's wrong with that?

How many years would it take to spend multiple thousands at 15 a month?Well at 180 a year that is probably a LIFE time of gaming lmao on ONE game in ONE year !!.

There are folks who spent 1000s on P2P games via 3rd party sites (to buy fully geared out characters or gear or power leveling etc...) - P2P games are NOT immune to this, they just don't allow it in-game. But we all know the reality of it - it's happening via 3rd party sites.

I remember players admitting they spent 500-1500 in one month on Ruins of Magic back in the day. There was a gamer just recently in here admitted to spending 200+ on a game that was only supposed to be fluff items lol.It is most definitely a misleading and addictive form of gambling that shoudld have better rules and regulations on spending.

It is not gambling - video gaming does not fall under gambling laws because it isn't gambling!

Regulations on spending???

What about consumer accountability? Are people not responsible for managing their own finances?

There are MMOs and other video games in development where gambling for real life money is the game.  I posted a thread a few months back about it.

I think Travel is not so much the issue as is content and design.  Let's look at the classics in their heyday for a minute.  These were games such as Ultima Online, EQ and DAoC.  What was so immersive about these games?  What made you play them for years and what makes you feel so nostalgic about them?  They had something that developers have forgotten.  These were open worlds and although they had some questing they were not quest-driven.

You could travel and explore pretty much anywhere.  Dungeons were not really instanced and you would see newbies at the beginning of a dungeon and veterans deep within its depths.  Crafting was pretty fun and player made items were worth something.  Ultima Online had a wonderful player run economy with a healthy "rares" market that the developers never foresaw on their drawingboard.  DAoC had the best endgame ever.  To many players, hitting 50 was the beginning.  PvP (or RvR as they called it) had purpose and meaning.  Attacking and defending castles with siege engines was awesome.  Protecting relics gave you an adrenaline rush.  Who does not remember hearing the broadcast call on chat announcing that the enemy was heading for Excalibur and how many hundreds would stop what they were doing to answer the call to defend? There was no need to increase the level cap every year in order keep players artificially subscribed by forcing them to buy an expansion and begin the level grind all over again.

The concept of the dungeon "Darkness Falls" was ingenious, and who played DAoC who does not have some stories about "Darkness Falls" to tell?  EQ was challenging.  Yes, travel was tedious and it helped to be invisible or be able to levitate.  Who doesn't remember getting a Shaman buff before crossing the Karanas? I think content was the key.  It was the content that kept you challenged regardless of level and class.   It was a community of players that drove the economy and made each of these games a pleasure to play and the fact that they were subscription based and not F2P or P2W

Yes, I admit that I am nostalgic and am always looking for a game that incorporates the elements that made these games great.  Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck in finding one during these last few years.  I am hoping that developers wake up and review these games again and see the elements that made them great.  If they did, they would be able to make a new great game instead of all the garbage that's out there.  A great game does not need a cash shop.  People will gladly pay a subscription to play it and most likely stay on for a long time.  Just mho on the subject.

You're making me want to cry.  Or bitch more about the current state of MMOs.

Yes, that is true, although not always availalbe, Depended on friends and luck. For me, I was not always lucky to have a port, so running to Karana did take me a long long time in Everquest!

(sorry if off topic guys)

This type of insta travel brings people together and makes people rely on each other.

But by insulting them calling them instant gratification dopamine junkies you are in effect belittling their position in effect saying they don't know what they are talking about.

It's just as bad, if not worse then what they are doing.

And you still don't know who they are.  Do you know who understands it and argues against it vs the person who understands and just doesn't agree vs the person who doesn't understand?

At best its' a guessing game.

The beginings of ad hominem does not contribute to a discussion., I could refer to very specific posts and posters, but that's not what a forum is about.  Ironically I agreed with your points, but you are too wrapped up in attacking to realise it.  So to clarify on my early post, what i am saying is that some people argue against immersion because they don't understand a style of play, you argue that some do understand and choose to ignore it.   You think the latter is not worse than the former?

to clarify above, im not saying 'you dont like it so you cannot understand it'  im saying that someone saying a game style is wrong and invalid because they don't like it is incorrect, and i'm saying some people do not understand what immersive role playing is about (as an example)  I don't think that is factually incorrect.

Venge didn't use an ad hominem - you did. He criticized you for doing it. By bringing it up, you hinted that the side that doesn't agree with you doesn't understand immersion. Even if you wrote "some people".

In the same manner I could write: Some people are more easily entertained than others, therefore slow travel time and arduous repetition is good gameplay for them.

No that's not what i said.  I wrote some people because i mean some people.  Some people do not understand immersion, that is not an attack on an individual and i'm not hinting, i'm out and out saying that in some cases this will be because it the games does not give the level of dopamine release they need to enjoy a game.  Venge may choose to be offended by that but there are studies that back this up. Players do indeed get addicted to higher levels of dopamine release. What 'side' are you referring to?

If you weren't referring to anyone disagreeing with you on this thread, why did you bring it up? The point you brought up would be irrelevant if you didn't.

Now to get back on topic lets go through a few points shall we?

  1. No one is suggesting one should be able to teleport right in front of the boss they are supposed to kill.
  2. No one is suggesting every game should have fast travel.
  3. In nearly every game with fast travel, you have to explore and find the points to which you can travel. Hence, fast travel does not eliminate exploration.
  4. Slow travel does not equal immersion nor is it required for immersion.
There. Can we agree on those?

1.  I hope we're not that bad yet.

2.  I don't know of a single MMO released in the past five years (at least) without insta travel).

3.  Why should you be able to insta travel after you travel to a location once?

4.  I agree.  But the DANGER and unknown combined with exploration encourages a person to take notice of the world they are in.  I don't really know what immersion means anyways (or why someone would want it or what slow vs fast travel has to do with it).

Paying for Everquest and FFXI was worth it.  Both were subs.  I am pissed I paid for TWS and FFXIV.  I've never played a F2P that I would pay $1 for or give another hour of my life to.
