I've already recieved more out of my beta weekend for my pre-purchase then I recieved from the steaming pile of crap that is d3.

D3 was the most dissapointing game of this decade for me. Guild Wars 2 would be hard pressed to meet that distinction. Plus you have a company that is more customer friendly behind it. Blizzard is notorious for milking shipped content until the very last second, then releasing addons.

Here's hoping it's not an MMO..

And please get over SWG..the game had tons and tons of flaws. It was completely player driven, so when populations dwindled around 05, the game started to suck.

Populations were fading because it had no content updates. Hell Both Rift and SWTOR have had more content updates in their first 6 months then SWG did in years.

NGE was seen as necessary for a reason..not just to fuck with people. The game was dying a slow painful death.

I'm confused to the point of the OP?

Your numbers dont actually have solid data behind it..

Servers that are claimed "dead" like Vrook Lamar..I play on and don't see the server as "dead" by any means..so..I don't get that. They remind me of low pop servers on most games today.  They stay "Light", "Standard" occasionally on weekends.

These next few months decide whether SWTOR will fail or succeed in the long run. The "mega server" rumours could be the best possible solution for a game that's been hit more by an unreasonable consumer base then actual flaws.

My only hope that comes out of all of this is that one of two things happens :

1. MMORPG players start to realize that a game in its first year will not have all the bells and whisltes of a game that has been in constant development for 5+ years.

2. Companies will build a game, ignore release dates and release it when it was finished. They will stop trying to capitalize on the disgruntled mmorpg players, and build a quality game that has longevity rather then a quick cash burst.

--

The MMO landscape changed in 2004-2006. But people and companies are assuming it stayed the same..it hasn't. The massive numbers of people leaving new games (Rift, SWTOR...soon to be added : GW2 and TERA) should be a wake up call.

It's ironic that by "voting with your wallet" consumers are destroying the mmo industry. What's the point of investing in building a game that will be abandoned in 3 months because it doesn't have "X" ? It's like everyone expects a game to be perfect, and I think nostalgia has a big part in this.

Every new game is held to a higher standard then the game before it. Hopefully the non-sub model of GW2 will give it some slack.

I always liked the idea of race mattering. Thought it was great in Shadowbane that larger races had more hp, same with Eq1..

But in the age of "fairness", why not just make the nameplate scale ? So for smaller races like the Asura, they have a larger nameplate to make up for a lack of physical size. And larger races have smalelr nameplates ?

I was only really shocked at the venom first with SWTOR...and now with GW2..and Diablo 3..and Tera..and Rift..

It makes me wonder if the mmo genre is just gonna die out ? People don't seem to even know what they want in a game anymore, and will universally pan any game that is released.

It seems to me that a game has to be perfect to be considered "good".

This would all be fine if this was just in the forums, but you see it in subs. When you think of the release state of some of the most successfull gams (LOTR, WoW, EQ1/2) the most recent games show a great deal more polish and content then they did at release.

But...

SWTOR HAS NO CONTENT!!! OMFG!!...GW2 IS SHIT!!..RIFT HAS NO ENDGAME!!!

...

There is no paitience anymore to wait for content to be released. Fresh out-of-the-box games are being compared to MMO's that have matured over half a decade or more (and that you've paid a hell of a lot more for in xpacs and such.)

I personally am thoroughly enjoying SWTOR, and I found GW2 to be a very nice game, especially knowing I wont be paying a sub fee. Rift had great CS, but I think will struggle to stay relevent with their refusal to even consider an expac for at least another year.

Even a game like WAR had a ton of promise, but people fled that game like rats fleeing a sinking ship. A developer alone cannot make an MMO great, the community has to be there. Developers alone can make a game like Skyrim. Developers + a paitient and active community create games like EQ and WoW

I loved the combat skills.

My gripe is the dodge mechanic..it seems kind of..tacked on. Especially in PvE. It's not dodging..its rolling away. I'd have prefered some sort of anticipation parry/dodge type mechanics instead of the random roll.

I also loved the wide array of weapons you could use, and how you gained skills with them (Through use) I thought that was really nifty.

Random baseless negative comment thats more about personal opinion, peppered with extreme verbage like "Ruined, horrible, ridiculous, terrible."

Thats what I'm supposed to post right ? since this is the MMORPG.com forums.

There's been times I've been stunned by beautiful graphics in SWTOR..and times they've been plain bad..so what ? That's every game..even games like AoC have some comically bad textures or graphics. GW2 I guess is more about bad animations then bad graphics..Tera was pretty meh.

Nothing new here. Its the same as Warhammer. Clunky movements, same type of combat mechanics. Just a few twists, thats it. I can't believe I waited years for this game to have it turn out like an MMO allready in existence.

The only redeeming quality is the length of the fights. It brings more strategy into the equation. And the dodge ability.

Other then that, we have a Warhammer pvp clone. Way to go ANET......../facepalm

If it was like Warhammers pvp..that would be friggin awesome. Warhammer had great pvp. Far as I can tell tho..gW2 pvp is a mini-game.

This is the nature of the MMO player now. And i'm hoping now people will start to stop listening to the trash talked on here. SWTOR was universally panned by people saying GW2 was going to be better...those same people are now saying GW2 is crap.

There are good things and bad things about both games. But mmo players are so damn jaded its ridiculous, they want a game thats been live for 6 years out of the box.

All I hear is "there's not enough content, pvp isn't balanced" it's ridiculous..its like they expect 6 years of content immediately at release..there's never the same amount of griping over an rpg that took about as long to develop but has less content.

once again taurens are related to the minautor, a classic figure of western mythologie while pandas are just that: pandas.

For thousands of years, minautors were some kind of badass monster killing heroes and kidnapping princess, nothing ridiculous about that.

Now take a random people in the steet and ask them what they think about pandas. They will all say the same thing: "cute, stupid, to lazy to reproduce, eat bamboo all day long etc". they'll also picture either kungfu or sneezing panda from youtube. Nothing heroic here.

td;dr : people (me) want to play in a tolkien-like fantasy world, not in a disney cartoon.

If you didn't want to play in a Disney cartoon..you probably shouldn't have picked up WoW in the first place. Tauren are about as  far from minotaurs as you can get. They're upright cows, Minotaurs were vicious monsters. (and there was only one Minotaur.)

I think i read somewhere that people complained about the space goats.

mmmh yes, they vehemently did, but that was more a complain about the lore retcon than the race itself.

There were complains against Blood Elves too, especially after the mid-beta body change for the male blood elves only that passed from a body much similar to their female counterparts to what they have now, basically body building bodies.

The only race I do not remember complains against are goblins.

Granted though, the complains against Pandaren are much more widespread as the rage is not limited to the race, but goes on to include the totality of the expansion due to the perceived appeal to Asian markets. This would be the same as saying that Creative Assembly, makers of the Total War series of games, is now appealing to Asian markets because after Medieval and Empire, two very western-centric titles, they passed to Japan, clearly to appeal to the Asian market, right?

The reason why people are complaining that the expansion is geared toward asian markets isn't because of the asian themes in the game..hell Western markets gobble that shit up. The complaint is the mini-game crap that they seem to be focused on, the blatant rip-off of pokemon, and the overall dumb choices blizzard has made over..and over..and over.

What my complaint about Mists of Pandaria is..is that its just a hack job, it's like they had a spinning dart board with cliche' shit on it and it landed on "ASIA".

Somehow its still less far-fetched then the space-people xpac they did tho.. (BC)

Bioware has to be thrilled to still be the second largest MMO in NA (and if WoW keeps losing NA subs the way it has been, it wont be long before it slips past blizzard's behemoth in NA)

Question is..does GW2 take more subs from SWTOR ? or from WoW ? or does GW2 flop horribly ? (like TERA will, god awful game that.. )

At the end of Q1 of fiscal year 2013, the analyst group is predicting a fall in subscriptions to 1.25 million.

That is an amazing retention rate when you think about it, and all the dom and gloom posts here would not lead one to believe that 1.25 out of 1.7 million would stay subbed. That would give SWTOr at 73% retention rate since Januaryy. Many here have been vehemtly stating that sub number are likely already under  1million. Guess that shuts that crowd up eh?

Anyway, good news for Bioware!

yea...i wonder how many people paid for a year subscription when the game released lol

No one..because it wasn't an option at release or for a few months after. Nice try though.

It says there's 1 file left to download.. and 0.0kb/sec download...anyone else have this problem ?

Pokemon has never been well protected from copying. Hell if I know why, but my god have you seen all the crap that copied it ? Digimon, Bakugan..etc..etc, perhaps its partially because it wasn't really any copywrited idea, I mean monster rancher was coming out at about the same time..

Hell it all comes from real-life animal fighting anyway..cock fights, dog fights..etc

Now if Blizzard makes their next xpac have a minigame where you jump on blocks and eat mushrooms..Nintendo will be all up in that ass.

Um..correct me if I'm wrong..but wasn't Cataclysm supposed to be a return to the Horde Vs. Alliance ?

Wasn't that what they pitched over and over leading up to the xpac..then it turned out to be the same old same old "Hey we hate each other..but guess what new super bad guy #3 is going to destroy all of Azeroth if we don't band together..but just this one time okay!?!?"

@ OP - What did you do in 2hours?  As if you actually wondered around everywhere like i did it wouldnt have been very much so dont understand you quote of "2hrs then its over".  I assume thats the same as saying "Skyrim:  All finished in 10hours".  Yes you could do that if you want but you dont.  Dont understand this need to hate games - just say "Played the demo/beta wasnt for me"

I played the demo and thought - brilliant, this is what i want.......Diablo 2 with better graphics.  Really liked the combat system with lots of variations for your character and looks like you can build on your play style.

Lol please don't compare Diablo 3 to Skyrim. Diablo is linear by design..this isn't WOOO GO DO WHATEVER I WANT. The mechanics don't work that way, not like Skyrim.

That said, it was never supposed to be like Skyrim..so thats cool ? Its more traditional.

Maybe its the fun that SWTOR brought to questing..but TERA's quest system kills the game for me, end of story. It's WoW quests, that's it, no innovation, just..here's a wall of text you don't read, here's a quest that you don't give a rat's ass about, here's a little exp, rinse and repeat.

SWTOR may have lots of flaws..but atleast the quests are involved and feel like they mean something.

After reading the post from the OP I had to quickly look at the url and make sure this was still MMORPG.com...

Very well written, and its interesting to see a take that focuses more on marketing campaigns then "OMFG THIS GAME SUCKS BECAUSE IT DOESNT HAVE EXACTLY WHAT I WANT".

The one thing I would point out though is discrepencies in talking about ArenaNets marketing campaign as something new. The Media Beta was done just a few months before by SWToR, Beta Weekends (Which I still find silly to call it a beta..its more like "Marketing Weekend") have been in use for the past few games (Including Rift, SWTOR).

I do think its interesting how marketing has changed from WoW to now. UO and EQ (that era) had no real marketing campaigns beyond a trailer here and there, and never in any massive market. WoW changed all that by shelling out boatloads of cash for marketing, landing trailers before big summer blockbusters, and rolling out TV commercials on major networks. I still maintain that this was a key factor in the rise of WoW to the super power it has become..not actual gameplay. WoW was a moment of marketing brilliance that hit at the right time.

After the success of WoW's marketing, the somewhat subdued, subtle approach to marketing that Rift, Tera, SWTOR, and now Guild Wars 2 have taken is...unexpected ? At the very least one would've expected a SWTOR trailer to precede the release of Star Wars Episode 1 in 3d.

I submit that this is a result of what WoW did. WoW slapped everyone in the face with MMOs, and I believe current games are still reaping the benefits, instead of whoring themselves out across widespread multimedia, they can be subtle about it (and save a ton of money) and still get the same amount of buzz for their product.

There seems to be a mass of threads about GW2 hype around at the moment.

For the life of me I don't see much hype at all from official sources, certainly nothing compared to what I experienced with SWTOR.

Is it a case that the bad experience of SWTOR has made everyone ultra wary or is it something else?

Reading between the lines I see a lot of negative posts coming from SWTOR fans and have to wonder is this some kind of grudge match?

SWTOR actually had relatively few negative posts until almost a month after release and those were quickly stomped on by fans.

GW2 has yet to reach open beta and is already receiving more than it's fair share of criticism. To make matters worse, there seems to be little to complain about other than 'HYPE'.

Play fair guys, at least let the game get out the door before trashing it. This hate train looks manufactured otherwise.

Those of us who play, and enjoy SWTOR have been waiting for this. The moment when the Flavor of the quater turns to GW2, and the rabid hatred is turned toward this game. Now perhaps you'll understand how forums on MMORPG.com are 90% hate and 10% common sense.

By the by...SWTOR was bashed for months before it was released. The next game after GW2 will be too, and the next, until people realize games have to be built post-release. WoW was a horrid game for the first few years (I personally still think it is..but all the content people are used to comes with time).

I feel genuinely sorry for developers trying to make MMOs in this market, I haven't seen a single game since 2004 that's gotten a majority of positive reviews here, and there have been plenty of good games.
