Can't be any worse than WoW's launch.

The two shouldn't, and can't really be compared.

WoW was an unexpected success, selling millions in a short time back when MMO's didn't even sell 1 million copies. Blizzard could not have foresaw how much of a success WoW was going to be. They didn't know the servers would be overloaded.

Whereas with games like FFXIV, GW2, SWTOR etc these are expected to sell at least 1 million as like a starting point. It's common for a AAA title to sell that many, and expected. Nowadays MMO developers have a very close estimate of how many people will be playing on day one, and should test their servers to cater to these numbers. That's what annoys me about bad launches.

On topic though; I really do think FFXIV will have a smooth launch, mainly because Square Enix do not want problems with the game this time around, having a bad launch would be one of the worst things they could do. I have faith in them after playing beta with no bug experiences, no lag and no other problems really.

Actually..they can be compared. WoW was expecting 500k-1 million users too, because the current benchmark was about 600k at the time. It was the most unpolished game we've ever seen released and people seem to forget how horrible the launch was.

Also..they didn't sell "millions" in a short time, WoW ramped up to its massive subs, it didnt start out with 8 mil..

Wanted to throw out a reminder on this thread : There is a patch, it's not huge (mine is finishing up and its only taken about 30 minutes) but it could still delay ya from getting on.
I'm intrigued.
I remember thinking $10 bucks a month was too much for Everquest and UO and hoping some day it'd drop..

Couple of additional points to ponder.

1.  WoW has it's own dedicated and fairly popular fansite in MMO-Champ.  No other site for any other game comes close for up to date news on a game.  This website is focused on everything else besides WoW, so it's a good place for the WoW haters to vent.

2.  Don't give the sandbox vocal minority that much credit.  If there were a market for that sort of game, developers would be making them.  There is a huge gulf between what shows up on an internet forum, and what people open their wallets for.

3.   WoW clones keep showing up because that's where the market is, and no theme park type game has close to the content and depth of WoW.  When gameplay is the end all be all of the genre, it's hard to compete with 9 years of iteration that WoW has.

Have you never heard of Zam ? Started out as a dedicated Everquest site waaaay back. Now its expanded but its still the best place to go for eq, eq2, rift...etc. WoW isn't the only one with a good fan-site to siphon off the fan boys.

As for the "sandbox minority"'re talking about the first people to ever play an MMO. These are people that played UO...don't disrespect the origins of the genre.

Everquest, Everquest 2 both have comparable or more content then WoW and are both theme parks. Both vastly preferrable imo too (I played WoW for several years as well) The problem is new games aren't given a chance. WoW was the last game to be given the benefit of the doubt from the start. Everquest was already five years old when WoW came out and had five years of content( and it was a TON of content). New games are expected to compete with WoW out of the box, its just silly. You're asking for all that time and money to go into a game before its even been released.

Its this syndrome of people seeing a 9 year product and comparing a 2 month product to it and wondering why it doesn't measure up.

questing and doing other content is better. You wouldnt want to pay a subscription to grind mobs...... would you? That experience is much hardcore on F2P mmos. At least i personally expect the very least mob grind possible if i am being charged to play. FF14 offers lots of content to avoid mob grind. Still mob killing but not awful mob grind.

We paid a subscription to grind mobs in Everquest!

Can't be any worse than WoW's launch.

I really don't want to slam ARR here because I've always liked FF games and I really want it to do well but let's be honest here, it doesn't seem to bring alot of new to the table.

It seems to have very pretty graphics but so do plenty of MMOs i.e. Tera.  And sure it's detailed but so are plenty of games i.e GW2.  Maybe a good story but that didn't do much for TOR.  I know it isn't the combat... I see absolutely no difference from that and a game from 2005.  Yet, Everyone that  plays it seems to really like and enjoy the game.  What's more strange is that ARR doesn't seem to have a hate following like many of it's competitors do for whatever reason.  From never playing ARR on the outside looking in I can't see what the big draw to the game is and I hope someone can explain it to me.

What is the major draw in ARR that pulls you back enough to make it your favorite new MMO?    Is the story really that good?  Is the world really immersive?  That would make sense combined with the music I'm sure square put into the game. Maybe it just gets alot more fun later on?  What is about the game that makes it so good for you?

It's a total package game that seems to emphasize group PvE and solid party mechanics.  It's greatest weakness is probably it's combat, but even that's not bad... it just has pacing issues.  For me it's kinda like Rift in that respect, it just covers all the bases; but unlike Rift the world/graphics/lore are not dull.

It's also the only new kid on the block for probably 6+ months down the road.  Even a plain Jane MMO starts to look pretty good when there are no other girls around for miles.

This just opened my eyes to why I stopped playing Rift! Rift was great as far as gameplay meant, I loved the class system, and I liked rifts. But it was soooo damn dull! The races were dull, the world was dull, the lore was dull, the "baddies" were dull.

Again with this "We need new stuff!" crap. Why ?  Just because the MMO community since WoW has the attention span of a flew doesn't mean every game that is released from now on has to be gimmicky as hell. (Tera's combat, AoC's combat, SWTOR's story, Neverwinter's Foundry, GW2s "dynamic events"/combat)

FFXIV offers a few things others don't :

- FF Universe

- Innovative Class(job) system (which will be in EQN)

-Everything from other familiar mmos (Public Quests, dungeon finder..etc etc )

-Yes, breathtaking Graphics (That don't require a godly computer anymore like they did with 1.0)

Basically...FFXIV is the older-style MMO done WELL. It doesn't have to be new to be good.

Did SoE spend as much as S/E?  Probably not, but then they dont have the resources S/E has.

Wait - SoE is owned by Sony, which is a ~huge~ company. As a total company, they have a revenue in excess of $72 Billion (US). They make everything from Playstations to John Mayer records to Walkmans to Matt Daemon movies to Everquest to OLED screens - and a lot of stuff inbetween.

Square/Enix isn't small by any stretch of the imagination. They have a revnue of around Y128,000 Million (JP) - which is roughly equivalent to around 1.3 Billion US (depending on exchange rates and etc). They are pretty much just a gaming company, with a bit of dabbling in video production.

S/E is less than 1/5 the size of Sony, if your looking at revenue. Sure, we are talking about SoE here, and not Sony as a whole, but you can't just isolate them either, since we are looking at S/E as a whole. SoE, if needed, could and would certainly pull resources and assets from the parent company if it required them and it was warranted.

Just because SOE is owned by Sony doesn't mean they have the resources of Sony dude. SOE is a very small part of Sony and isn't that big a contributer to their profit margin. They aren't given blank checks "Hey go use our billions of dollars to fuck with some MMOs!"

Also..what the hell with the conversion ? 128 million yen is more like 12.8 million US. Your sources are way off. (100 yen = 1 dollar...*very roughly*)

or Tera or even Tor. I can only think it is because people are graphic worshipers or have some type of idealized thought about FF. Of course when we play these games it is only natural to compare them to others we have played.

I am not saying that ff is a terrible game just bland, ie mediocre. Yes the graphics are much better than the years old Vanguard but the crafting, combat, freedom (zones) diplomacy (one of a kind) exploration value, do not come close to Vanguard. Even Tera-both games have generic quests and both have great graphics but the combat is light years ahead in Tera. Even Tor with its average mmo mechanics has a much better quest system and cut scenes.

I guess what I am asking is How could this game be more popular than Vanguard-beats me? I am guessing it is because we are living in the "Latest and Greatest" generation I do understand the latest, but where is the Greatest?

Because Vanguard was terrible when it launched and still is ? That game was an epic failure, from all its bugs, to lack of content.

Pretending this is all because of "graphics" is silly. FFXIV does bring some new concepts, but you forget that it all doesnt have to be "new" to be "good".

People get so damn caught up in that right now "I want new features!" but games that do new things get reamed (SWTOR,TERA, Eq2...etc etc) Simple fact is...mmo players will never be happy.

I didn't get any emails we were supposed to get on the 20. I've just entered the 18 digit Early Access code Amazon sent me after purchase, that was the only code I had (I had no 20 digit code some other people did). After entering it on this site, they gave me the Promotion Code (12 digits only). I had to redeem this code on my Playstation Network and the download started.

The rep pretty much was telling a bold face lie. A friend of mine that will be playing on Balmung had to point it out to me. She said if I was getting error 3 message to keep trying. After about 25+ tries it finally redeemed. Was also fortunate enough to get the NA code and not stuck with a EU code like some folks.

B1 to B3 went so well. But so far everything after it has been nothing but problematic.  I really hope they get it together. Because once you lose the people. It is very hard to get them back. ARR was their second chance. You piss people off anymore and there won't be a third chance.

The poster is clueless and inaccurately attacking Angelxx as a "rep".

I purchased the $29.99 retail package from Amazon today.  Amazon immediately sent me my confirmation code with a link to the redemption site.  I didn't get any "Error 3", it worked perfectly.  Upon entering the code I received my promotional redemption key, which also worked flawlessly.  The only part I don't know yet is if it all actually worked, although I see no indication to expect failure.

I also checked my account dashboard, FFXIV:ARR registered - 8/21.

This sounds about right for everything thats happened from Phase 4 to now :

Some people are brought to an absolute screeching halt, with little or no clear explanation of how to troubleshoot, what to do, or even where to get information.

Others have no problems what so ever.

Since your code from amazon worked from a pre-order today, I'm wondering if the older codes are what got screwed ? I mean I got my code back in July and I still can't register (error code 3) but game is listed as "EU" for me

This is amazing, thank you.

How do they even have these problems ? This shit is all so convoluted. So 1.0 was unfinished, 2.0 is a great game, but crippled by extremely poor planning for launch ?

Why are there so many codes, so many ways to register, so little information on how to do it, and so many friggin account pages ?

If they couldn't handle multiple outlets for their game, they shouldn't have set it up to be sold through places like Amazon and Gamestop..etc

The overwhelming feeling of being second class to the Japanese customers is getting very frustrating too (now I know how EU players feel)

(I'm one of those people that is "registered" as an EU customer..despite being NA and using an 18 digit code..that was repeatedly sent back with Error 3 messages)

I have my pre-order code (they send it right after you pre-order) but I get an "Error 3" message, anyone else get that ?
I preordered in june or july and still dont have an early access code...anyone have this problem ? (from

I have a major problem with "guns" being in high-fantasy MMOs, and I blame WoW for the growing usage of them. Even primitive guns don't make sense.

Ninja's on the other hand..they fit just fine. Not sure why anyone would be so against it. I'd be happy for EQN not to be so strictly Euro-high fantasy and include other elements like they did with DoN and a few things in already have monks that are most definitely not "European"

Am I the only one who found it wierd that they linked guns and ninjas ? You have one that starts in about 1400-1600 (depending on your usage of "gun") and another that is up to a two thousand years before guns.

They're so far apart when it comes to the question of "fitting" in high fantasy that it just didn't make sense.

As I am enjoying myself I noticed the number of thumbs up vs. the thumbs down on each video and the general flavor of the comments as such.

Well, the legion has spoken.  Overwhelmingly, the thumbs up and general comments are proof... EQN is being accepted by the general masses.

The running thumb count for the channel is:

Thumbs Up - 6416

Thumbs Down - 305

Best up-voted comment:

  • David Georgeson - "What do you guys think? Do you like it?"

Someone from? the audience - "TAKE MY MONEEY!!"

Of the 6416 I believe we have about 16 of them posting here.

Of the 305 I believe we have 298 of them posting here. forums are a haven for negativity. Just like at the venom with which people talk about SWTOR, GW2, WoW, Everquest 2...etc (In other words all of the current most successful and profitable games out there).

You'd think no one plays any of these games anymore.

Alrighty the naysayers and trolls have found there way in.  Let me see here...

- No Levels/Horizontal Progression

- Voxel built world/fully destructable

- Minecraft building style ability throughout Norrath

- 8 starting classes, up to 40 interchangeable advanced classes

- Permanent changes to the world via Rally Calls (PQ's), described as being the lore of the game as you shape the world.

- Layered world, able to break through to deeper parts of the planet.

- Factions that matter, like in EQ1. KOS to certain towns/guards

I could go on, but with a starting list like this what else do you people want? Set aside the character models, and set aside the limited hotbar.  WHAT ELSE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT!

And how the hell can you still call this a themepark?

I said this in another thread and I'll say it here. A sandbox means freedom, not being able to literally dig in the sand. Georgeson and Co. went to great lengths to mention how one could not negitively impact rallying calls, how one could not in essence act as a counterpart to the "Heroic" and virtuous image the devs envision all of the players opining to represent. I can't be a healer or tank, my role in combat is relegated to DPS, and despite the patchwork answers to these questions given at SOE live, your advancement and achievement will be tied directly to DPS contribution.

"Play your way, as long as it is doing DPS, and following the storyline" isn't a Sandbox.

Seriously, for sake of argument, remove the voxels and currently-empty promises of storybricks (which two of the most acclaimed sandboxes, UO and SWG had neither of) would EQN still be a sandbox? No. It wouldn't. It's a chassis of minecraft built to carry mechanical parts from MOBA titles, coupled with what was the latest and greatest and trendiest combat system at that time in EQN's development, GW2, without waiting to see how that system panned out.

Everything in EQN hinges on middleware. Unproven, and currently non-functioning middleware.

I was hoping you'd post in this thread.

Your definition of a "Sandbox" seems a bit like anarchy, not a game. Remember UO ? Attack anything in a city and you insta-died. Steal..and "Guards!" insta-die, try to build a house ? Sorry too much shit is already here, or sorry too close to a dungeon, sorry too close to a city. Remember SWG ? Where they had missions for cash, where you were limited again by borders ? Where there was definitive "level" progression on planets ?

All of these sandboxes had structure, just because you could play around in the center doesn't mean they were free.

Also, you keep bringing up this idea that "Everyone is a dps" yet..we saw a tank, combat is far from finished (this game isn't even alpha) and yet you know exactly what the combat style will be. There's no way in hell anyone got that from either the reveal or the classes panel. The closest thing I recall was when someone compared combat to GW2 in the classes panel and asked if you could be support they got a round-about answer about "Well everyone has to do some kind of damage"

They've also alluded to their being tanks, but not npcs that will sit and hit one dude because he has anger procs or Terror of Thule over and over while getting ass-raped by 30 rogue, wizards, and rangers(teehee).
