[Interview] WildStar: Why Movement Matters
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/13/13 12:07:52 AM
I got to first see Double Jumps in Unreal and it turned me off big time.I see absolutely no good in it,it is not adding anything to the game. When you jump normally you have to hit the jump button twice anyhow,so there is no difference. To get the added height might seem fun to them but to me it turned my beloved Unreal series into a joke. That is why i prefer vanilla Unreal and not all the nonsense they added later on. Wildstar started on the right path to making good thoughtful combat, adding this is a step backwards and all just because someone thought it would be cool or fun.It shows how little thought they put into it because they contradict themselves. They said it could not be used to evade an attack but to more or less jump over something to escape.Well how does that relate to FUN? It is not like a well placed lift that allows you to escape, your attacker can do the exact same DJ as you are,so it really adds nothing at all.I think the truth is they saw it as an easy way to implement the exploration mode with higher cliffs. The Exploration mode might be fun for some, but i just don't get into console type gaming where i am doing puzzle jumping.I would prefer well thought out thinking puzzles than keyboard button presses. If i was to take it serious,i would like to see a timer on the DJ,perhaps only every 10-20 seconds and you should be able to avoid attacks using it .Dodging is a good idea as done by Unreal also i just hope it is not done like GW2 with the rolling, that is NOT dodging that is a tuck n roll. One thing i will say is that they don't seem satisfied, they are constantly looking for new ideas which is always a good thing for gaming, just so long it doesn't get too cheesy.

mmorpg.com 100k hit: Obviously fake. DF UW: Trammel version of DFO.
General Discussion « Darkfall: Unholy Wars 5/12/13 7:43:02 PM
Why did two people mention NEW FEATURE after only one month?IMO as others have mentioned in the past, you need to make sure the current game is running as intended before moving on.Developers that do it the opposite way are doing it wrong. Yes you should expect some new features and content but give them more than a month after launch ,c'mon now be serious. |

I like P2W cash shops. Anyone else like me?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/12/13 1:00:12 PM
You OP miss the whole point of gaming >>>FUN.It is not about grind or how long it takes,it is how fun it is.If you feel you need to speed up your gaming experience, then you are simply in the wrong game because apparently it is not as fun as you are telling yourself. You are placing a FUN value based on how fast and how much you can spend.I am quite certain if you look up the definition of FUN neither reason quantifies FUN.

There lies the problem OP,has Soe given any indication of that?I think definitely not.Just play EQ2 you will have your bags loaded with junk and good drops, they try to give you too much of everything. You fight a Boss there is a really good chance you will get what you are after. in comparison i knew MANY players in FFXI who spent months, years getting certain drops, they were truly rare and made them all the more exciting to finally get one. What i have seen so far is like everyone else, which is not much. However it does not look at all like it will be old school, not in the least.Simple reason is they are bantering around new ideas. We heard them toss around the perma death idea. The reason imo is because they are tossing around ideas that might support a cash shop. That has been Smedley's tunnel vision for a few years now. So i expect the decision process to be based on money making more so than what makes a great game to play.I know it sounds like it goes hand ion hand but not really. They will pick and choose from the easiest elements to pull off and the most cost effective. I believe the game will be a quality product, i am actually certain of it,aside from bugs which SOE is famous for.It will only be a matter of how much is about cash shop. |

Don't bother with DFUW it's overrun by cheaters.
General Discussion « Darkfall: Unholy Wars 5/12/13 5:14:52 AM
The one guy tried to make a valid point because an aimbot doesn't guess, well it actually can but not quite like i am stating it.What i mean is you could set a lag setting so it imitates prediction based on latency. However that would work the same all the time,so at varied distances it might not help.it all comes down to how fast the projectiles move. I know from my experience in DF1,the arrows can move pretty quick, imo an aimbot would definitely work.I remember standing opposite a large body of water and the orcs were firing long range arrows.I could sort of get out of the way but they were tough to avoid and that from long range. We should make one thing clear,i have NEVER seen anti hack protection work.As soon as one anti cheat comes out,it only takes a around a few days to maybe two weeks ,then a new one is ready.it is NEVER going to stop, there is awlays going to be cheaters in EVER pvp game. I do have many ideas on how to catch cheats,so it is possible to really narrow it down, but it takes a lot of added work and you need to sort of monitor the client 100% of the time, that alone is tough to pull off.I will use one perfect example "LATENCY"One of the first cheats was to add lag to their client so they would almost become invisible, really tough to pick them up.The other cheat was to increase the PC Bios speed ,it really doss work but it 100% detectable if the developer writes the code to detect it. Point ...It is not right to target DFUW,this has been a problem since 1998,15 years lol. That is how long we know of it,may have been some cheating before then that was kept under wraps. There is only one saving grace, you need to trust your developer.I know it is frustrating as heck, trust me i know. The saving grace will be to know that eventually they will be caught and kicked out of the game. |

[Column] Scarlet Blade: Scarlet Blade... Really?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/12/13 4:54:10 AM
I like to give every game at least a try,i won't judge it solely on the character looks, actually i care little of character looks. First of all MOST games never look as good as they do in HD pics.Soon you get in ,it looks f2p. Extremely generic start, your typical wilderness with no reason as to why you are starting there and not from your home.I guess F2P games characters don't have homes, they don't eat or anything, they just stand out in the wilderness looking for NPC's with markers over their heads. Anyhow no matter.I lasted about 1 hour, then left the game and deleted it.I wasn't even angry or unhappy,it was as i expected,so nothing was a surprise. Not like when i anticipated FFXIV for 5 years only to be extremely disappointed. Point is you can easily find a better game even in the cash shop industry. |

I don't know if that is a real game advert but it was funny. You know what it came off to me as,like someone was poking fun at EVE online, just replace the boats with space ships ,everything seemed identical lol.

It really is not about Sandbox or Theme park,or levels none of the complaints we hear. it is about a good solid effort in designing a game. That means every single aspect looks like some thought was put into it.I usually spot so many areas in a game that just look like someone put one day into it and said go with it and hurry up doing it. Make no mistake DF does what it does because they had to .They have a very limited team and budget. I am sure that if Tasos had a large team and tons of money, you would see a totally different animal.point is ,don't be so quick to give a developer credit for doing what they were forced to do.Tasos said and knew he was on a limited time frame to get this game out,he said it himself. I will use an example to show you it is not about levels or linear questing. FFXI old school. NO quest progression,so no xp for doing quests. you could play EVERY class on the same player, that means if you want to help a player at level 1,just hop on a new class and enjoy, you are still helping your own player and the new player, everyone happy.Furthermore they adopted a similar system to what EQ2 created, the MENTORING system. So in FFXI you still have levels, you still have new players, you still have quests, but there is no level segregation. Then you figure in the fact that the game was a must for grouping, you are always going to find players to help each other.FFXi has over 20+ classes all unique, none of the distinct over lap you see in most games, that have maybe 4/5/6 classes. With over 20 classes to play all on the same character,i am pretty sure you are set for a very long time. That is the difference between good game design and bad game design. There is no need to start changing the TRINITY like GW2 claims, there is no need to lose levels, there is no need to have or have not linear questing, just design the game to work,it is as simple as that.

BBC - World of Warcraft subscribers are leaving, Activision warns
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 5/11/13 5:02:02 PM
Well Kotick says they are trying to release new content quickly to keep players interested.IMO just making a new zone or instance is NOT content, that is part of the bare make up when designing a game.Content is when you get creative and give NEW ideas ,so that players have choice. EQ2 is basically doing the exact same thing,it simply does not entice players to play or look forward to login. I choose a game because i want or hope it will be fun.Now i do believe every game should have a trial or open beta so players can see what they are about to buy.Weather it has a subscription does not matter to me,it is all about the quality. Blizzard started WOW copying the basic EQ template, then proceeded to tweak or change things a VERY small bit. They need to get out of that copy cat thinking and get creative. \What i believe is actually happening is the f2p market is opening eyes not because it is some what free.Gamers now are able to try many different games and soon realize,WOW is not really that good.So many players are now deciding that they might as well play the same old linear questing for free. You can actually get linear questing and instances in a plethora of games now for free. |
|
|
Perfect timing and yes i saw that, too bad i got really bored of playing already. The game has not changed from level 1 to 22,i play every fight the same except the odd boss fight that allowed me to point hit and hide around obstacles. it is nice to usually group but in this game, nobody chats,it is more like a race, fights are always a zerg, nothing organized what o ever. The trend seems to be all Bosses spawn adds,AI is really poorly done, trash mobs don't really have any AI. I knew going in what to expect,it is after all f2p but i was hoping the combat and game would change a bit,but it is just your typical linear questing and not really that great after the initial excitement wears off. It did hold my interest for about 5 days, much better than other games that have come out, some i delete in first 20 minutes. |

I( agree on the realism and imo everyone wants it even the ones who don't acknowledge it.There always has to be a limit, somewhere a line drawn. Also it has to make sense,if not then why even have weapons, why not just press a key and the dmg is done. As to trash mobs, they are suppose to be there as part of a living world. The choice is always suppose to be the players,it is after all your game you are playing. FFXI did it properly anyhow, even the simplest fights are a challenge to varied degrees. When you hit an area of choice, the mobs are not all identical, some are easy prey some even match some very good, some incredibly tough.Once again you have choice, you can choose to go the easier less rewarding ep mobs or the much more challenging.Where the skills are added is in determining when to fight each type of mob.I will use an example. You fight 2x EP to build your TP up ,then you take on the tougher foe. There are also bonuses to fighting in succession under a time limit,so again thought goes into your fighting. In most every game i have seen, there is no thought, run in as a group or solo and just zerg it.Unless we are simulating or role playing the cave man days when a caveman might run straight at a wild boar because he was just too stupid to know better,it is an unrealistic combat design. Another point is weapon of choice.Once again FFXI made a slight impact,as weapon could definitely matter at times. In most games, you simply walk around with the exact same weapon all the time.Again unless this si a caveman theory and we all walk around with a rock or a stick spear,it does't make sense. Trying to over analyze really is not necessary, fact is developers are looking to just whip games together.Dot mobs around then tie them into linear quests and that is your game in a nutshell. |

[Column] Neverwinter: On Neverwinter
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/11/13 3:16:58 AM
I find the Foundry which so many are talking about to be a great idea on paper but as implemented in game,it is still the same old as Cryptic's quests.I have played about 20 all were top rated for my levels,i am 22 now. Everything is really just a lot of following sparkly paths and constantly opening your map because the layouts are a cluttered mess. I have no idea how good the tools are in the Foundry quests but imo,i could easily make better quality quests.I have worked with game engines for about 15 years,so i guess i just have a better idea /feel for map layouts and ideas.I have not been the least impressed with any Foundry quest so far.I gave everyone a 3 just because i was feeling in a good mood and i don't want to discourage people from continuing to try. I find the telegraph idea ok,when i heard about it for Wildstar i thought it would be a lot better once i got to try it out.Problem is once you commit to an ability, you have to follow through with the animation,so you never really get away too often. Some animations take 3/4 seconds. So far i have played only two classes the Guardian and fighter,i find myself playing in a very generic mode.I like keybinds but i feel this game needs a traditional hotbar. I found that as i play through the game,i see lots of small peeves that constantly look f2p.Example everything is instanced,models/meshes are repeated a lot,ALL AI seems identical and bosses seem to have their one telegraph move and not much more.Almost every mob is stationary there is the odd threesome wandering about, not often.Aggro mechanics seem extremely one dimensional they are all based on proximity and all seem to have the same proximity. When i enjoyed combat in FFXi for example the mobs AI was much more diversified.I would fight a mob and it might heal itself, would try to bind me in place then follow up with nukes. Then it might cast Flash and try to blind me,it might cast blind on me,DIa to lower my defense, cast protect on itself to raise it's defense,Bio to lower my attack ect ect, just much more quality and depth put into the system.Within 5-10 seconds you have seen all these mobs have to offer. |

What MMO do you believe had the best potential but failed in execution?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/11/13 2:44:35 AM
Originally posted by nerbon Geesus ,i agree 100% ,i actually think so little of the game i totally forgot about it. Ya no doubt this is easily the worst executed game ever and i doubt any game will ever match it. They didn't even have the money to finish it,so you know right there it was not released as a complete game.I am sort of baffled as to why with al lthe money they made, why they didn't upgrade the game engine and the game and put some love into it. They made soooo much money they went out and expanded to 650 workers ,that is a LOT.Instead of spending it on Eve,they slapped their player base in the face and took that money and started to work on other projects like Dust for example and APPS for FB and such. With the kind of money they made and wasted, they could have easily turned Eve into a game everyone would enjoy. |

What MMO do you believe had the best potential but failed in execution?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/11/13 2:39:14 AM
First of all grrr,it took several tries and finally 12 seconds to load this page ( MY first choice is Vanguard,it is actually a great game that failed to gather the gamer's perception of a great game. I would have to say failing at execution was SWTOR.It has all the outside edges in place it just failed add the detail. If i was in charge, every single aspect would be done better and i mean EVERYTHING. That is the funny thing about rating games. An outside look at SWTOR and you think ok maybe a 7/10.However since i would improve everything in the game,i can't rate any aspect more than a 5/10.That actually makes the entire game a 5/10.The actual eye candy of the world is acceptable as maybe a 6 but the layout is so generic, like a linear path it steps back to a 5 again. If you got a real creative developer to take it over and spend 12-16 months on systems and graphics and effects,it si there as a top game.,NO not Bioware, this game could easily be a 8/10. |

I think EQ2 is a good choice OP,but mine would be without question FFXi. This would of course assume "Free to PLAY",not the fake f2p as we know it.AKA cash shops, item malls. To spice things up maybe we should have asked to ignore our favorite game. |

EA Conference call: SWTOR with just under 500k subs, 1.7 million free to play

Originally posted by vadess40 Well yes i agree that should be the only reason we look at a game on a personal level and how we judge it,based on our own opinion. This was however a big issue, big enough that the CEO stepped down or so they say,i find that really hard to believe. He didn't just step down,he was removed entirely from the picture. The EA stock went down 40% under his lead, that is a massive amount of money, far more than the game is involved on it's own. However all the blame was laid at this game's feet.So when you have the people that really matter, the people with the huge pocket books,it becomes a really big deal. BTW that CEO was considered by big names outside the industry as the best thing that ever happened to EA,other people actually liked him.The guy that took back power is the guy the industry could not stand.SO to see him go imo is again a big deal. That is all this topic is about the importance of money and how this game affected EA and the future of it.It is really not a reflection of the game from a personal perspective,as mentioned,it ONLY matters to each individual. It only becomes a bigger deal if EA decides to close the game

It has not added a single thing to my gaming experience but i still see it as a really good idea.it allows MANY gamer's that never knew anything about designing a game map and how to lay it out.The more knowledge more gamer's have is imo a very good thing. Eventually developers won't be able to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, when they talk smack we LOL,when they try to sell us a lemon we LOL. IO should make one point. There is a HUGE limitation >>>IMPORTING.If they allowed users to import,it would create MUCH more versatility in the system. |

Top Guid Calls it Quits: The Balance Between Increased Content Distribution and a Compelling Treadmill
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 5/10/13 1:38:54 PM
When your whole game revolves around one carrot "Raids"then yes ,i am actually surprised people don't get bored in the first month. Not sure you can call anything "competitive"if you run a Raid more than once,it just becomes habit and super easy.Even in the game i consider to have the toughest fights "FFXI" it becomes clockwork, you look for exact triggers, warning signs and your mages/healer look for their triggers and sings to react. Another point is serious Wow raids tend to want ONLY the best geared players,i hardly call that challenging when you are geared to win. Also MANY of these so called serious players are all using ADD-ONS that give them an unattended advantage, making their game yet again >>EASIER. Nothing is ever as challenging and exciting as the first time, especially if nobody is telling you exactly how to win.Internet ruins all challenges, people simply look up the win formula and copy it. Eventually most of the WOw players will filter out and with all the knowledge they gain about shallow game play, they will not accept it any more in other games,It might actually be a good thing and encourage developers to step up their efforts.
