I can give a VERY simple review because i would be accurate in every sense of the review.

IMO the entire game ,i mean almost every last shred is a 6/10.It does not do anything real bad but it does not do anything real good, there lies the problem.

If the best parts of the game are only 6 it really does not give anything to grasp onto for longevity.I can see how the lowest score being a 6 is good to some, but when i look to games to play for longevity,i look for the upper scores not the median.

I would really have to strain myself to grasp for something i could rate a 7,if i was forced at gun point i might say the large feeling of freedom, but really there is nothing that warrants a very good rating just average across the board.

Well he has a point,DF could not even deliver the game to many people ,let alone being able to judge it.If MO can at least deliver the game on launch date to anyone who wants it,they win the launch battle right away.

Also remember DF was a game that IMO was really almost finished many years ago, unlike MO a game they are creating from scratch.I did a lot of homework on Df and read a lot of articles in the past and no question that game was suppose to launch years ago, they even took out the bank loans to launch it.\

So Tasos definitely had way more than ample time to at least get the game ready for launch and still failed ,so it is really hard for anyone to top that failure.I believe MO is trying to actually finish the game, and rightfully so they deserve what ever time it takes, but when you "DO" launch the game,it had better be ready.

We also have to be fair here,IF and it is a big IF only speculation but if MO is near bankrupt ,we can't blame them for at least trying to get some kind of game out ,to pay the bills,it is either that or fold the game.I do not think any of us would just fold a game, but it is only speculation by me,we don't know how much is a rush or a forced rush or RUSH GSP :D

Sandbox is a mis used term,Theme park as well.Hardcore ,casual, carebear are also 99% of the time used in a selfish manner.

Actually just about every term their is mis used depending on the selfish reason of the user.Example the famous TROLL word, people login to make a post that does not support the topic, they only post to inform someone else they are a troll,so in other words they only posted to flame that person, and not support the topic/post,so they themselves would be the troll. My definition of a troll is those very people that are not there to support or debate the topic and YES topics are there to discuss ,otherwise why did you post the topic in a forum?

Once again the SELFISH terms Fanboy, Hater,MOST use Fanboy on someone who likes a game but they do not and Hater they use if they like the game but someone else does not offer a favorable opinion,so yes it is selfish reasons for forming these terms,in most cases. My definition of a Fanboy is one who no matter what will not accept any fault with the game or rates the game way too high for obvious reasons, example an 8 bit soundtrack, then a fanboy says it has the best sound score of any game they have ever played.

I will use one more example Carebear.Once again they look at the term from a selfish perspective. They think because a low level player can die ,it is hardcore, yet they forget that the person who cannot die in that same scenario would be the Carebear,by their definition,it works both ways.My definition of a Carebear, would be a player who NEVER wants to lose anything at all ever.

My definition on Hardcore would only be in PVE,where by you have a VERY high risk of losing and a high risk of losing a lot,the NPC loses nothing ,he just dies and respawns ,this is why it works in a PVE situation. You can also use Hardcore to someone who plays a lot of continuous hours, you may also call that person an idiot but whatever lol.

You know why i don't like PVP so much??EVERY single game on the planet has CHEATING,and it is never more predominant than in a PVP game.Until a developer can PROVE w/o a doubt that cheating is a non factor, and i am not saying limited cheating ,i am saying ANY i won't play it.I do not care if it is only 3 players cheating on the whole server, i will not support cheating or any game that cannot solve the issue within their own game.

Cheating ALWAYS 100% of time awards players within the game,it puts others who play legit at a disadvantage, this is not what people sign up for when playing a game, they want their money and their time within the game to be treated as fair as everyone else.

This is why KNOWLEDGE of cheating is very important,if a developer spends more time trying to hide the issues than solve them,i suggest you do not support them. Now if the developer educates and wants the help of the community to clean up their game but is struggling, that is different at least they are trying,to just delete posts/information is ignorance and shows they are trying to HIDE something.Hiding information form the player base would be nothing better than a Watergate scandal, let's shred the evidence.

i'm really starting to wonder if they arn't releasing sto way too early.  especially with their 'we don't have any klingon missions but if you buy the game and complain enough we might add them later' attitude

its simple you just wait 2-4 month or how long you think they should hold on to release and then you buy it. hope to see you in there then my self will be there on release day.

This does not work in most cases. The developers of games seem to follow that uni directional design of time=reward,so you will be behind the eight ball forever. Also we all know how badly game economies change over just a few months,so again you will be joining a rough economy. Then yet another failure for joining late is the lack of players to join with,as the majority would have moved on,and your zones will seem empty.

This is why developers need to get it right from day 1,or hold the game off until it is properly ready,OR they are just screwing over their fan base.I have not followed the long development of STO enough to form any opinion on weather it is ready or not,i leave that up to the more knowledgeable STO fans.

What would suck is if STO really turns out to be a good game.

I am VERY open minded and even though i am awaiting frantically for FFXIV,if STO turns out to be a better game,i would play it.So ya that would really suck if both FFXIV and STO turned out to be good games,i have to divulge enough time between two games or make a choice.

I thought high fantasy was a term used for very generic fantasy (tolkien style).

ie: dwarves, elves, magic, dragons etc.

I don't think i can debate that, but Square Enix does offer that no?

The difference is that Square unlike everyone else, puts their own theme and creativity into everything.I mean it is hard to change the elven look but they did a good job creating the other race like Taru,Galkan, and changing from the conventional felpurr or cat they introduced their own Mithra.

I think we can maybe tie everything into Tolkein and the original DDO theme, but if everyone just outright copied it all,we would have some pretty boring games and really not needing anymore than 1 or 2 games in total.

CREATIVITY is the keyword. This is what separates games, and makes looking forward to the NEXT game coming out ,so enjoyable. This is why recently people have begun to complain of copying the WOW theme too much, even though it is not WOW's theme to claim it is EQ's,it still shows that people crave creativity.

I have not read all the categories, but this is one they definitely got right.

I am not saying this game will be great, they are trying out some new ideas and losing levels and watering down class play is a bold move.I am waiting impatiently to see their final product.

The reason it is an easy pick for most anticipated is because of Square's track record and incredible creativity.I have very little confidence in other developers. For myself if FFXIV turns out to be a flop,my head will sink very low, these are the guys that i feel can give me the quality and creativity i strive for in games.Square understands the TRUE meaning of a MMORPG,they understand the word "challenge" so the game offers me reason and enjoyment to login.Unlike many others ,i do not login to perform some speed leveling acrobatics,i login to play a game.

If Square can repeat FFXI's quality and effort,i am sure FFXIV will be an amazing game,if not,i may go another year or two with nothing good to play.

Haha i think the op is misrepresenting the term LORE.

You MUST start LORE with the races and WOW does nothing to offer any game play LORE behind it's races,so they failed from day 1.Sure they may have the WARCRAFT characters, but those same type races and characters are found through out many games.

You want to see how LORE is done at least better than all other games, look at EQ or EQ2.You start knowing only certain languages, you cannot get quests w/o learning other languages, you search out lore books on the different races throughout the game, you learn mastery spells ect ect.

Heck if Blizzard was going to be so cheap and rehash the whole Warcraft artwork, leaving nothing to creativity and copy EQ's template for game play,at least they could have copied the LORE template.

Heck when you play FFXI you get distinct character race statistics, not superficial ones like in wow.Picking a race in WOW means very little. As far as back story goes, the few epic designed [linking] quests WOW uses was just another copied idea from EQ.Even in saying that it is ONLY those epic quests that offer any story, just the same as in EQ or EQ2,there is no difference. The rest of WOW's game play is just thousands of VERY useless boring quests, only there for one reason level on,nothing to do with LORE or story or anything at all.

So WOW does nothing better for LORE than even FFXI,and it definitely does not have the back story of FFXI,witch is pretty much always pointing to the Crystal Wars ,where WOW jumps all over hell's acres.EQ2 is imo miles ahead of the pack for a game with LORE,heck it is even has better Roleplaying tools to act out your LORE,so ya WOW is nothing to brag about in the LORE department.

As a matter of opinion,i believe Blizzard ONLY used the WARCRAFT theme because it was EASIER to do.They already had the fan base,so they did not have to use any cahoonas and create a fresh story with fresh LORE.They already had the artwork so again not as much effort needed in that department.Wow is nothing more than a cheap copy of EQ,that is what their DEVS were aiming for ,they were EQ players, that is why they wanted that identical type game, however the LORE part is one area they missed copying.

Congratulations to KingsIsle for an amazing year. Wizard101 will always be number 1 in my book. My entire family loves the game.  My children got to experience their first MMO and we all discovered a magical adventure right inside the Spiral.

Fallon (@diaryofawizard)

I know it is EXTREMELY easy to get caught up in your children's excitement, but put that aside...would you your self as the adult play w101 w/o any of your children?Would just you and your wife play it?I really think the honest answer is no,you might try it out,but you won't feel overly excited about playing it.You might even say you would play it,but again no more so than any other game on the market.

No question it is a great children's game, but imo it takes a distant second place to Free Realms. If you say yo uare willing to enjoy w101 with your family, there is absolutely no reason you would not do the same with FR.As a fact FER has a ton more diversity a ton more game play and just really offers more people more options, therefor it is a lot better suited to family play.

W101 as is FR is directed at ages 3-15.That really narrows down the FAMILY term.I have played games and guiled up or grouped up with all family member guilds and teams.Often times they had 4-5 members so they needed a 6th or 2 others but there was still that solid family play and they all would individually enjoy the game even if their family was not with them.

These older demographic games may alienate the very young but they offer a wider array to the term "family".I would say ages 8+ for the other games, because they offer so much more, they have a better chance to keep the interest of more people.

So imo and of course t oeach their own,but if you are going to rate a FAMILY game based on catering to the VERY young, then Free Realms blows the doors of f Wiz 101 it is not even close.

I would say just basing off of VERY young demographic that FR #1 W 101 #2 and any number of F2p games as #3 just because you can have your whole family play for no cost. However for a TRUE wider age group for a family game then maybe a game i don't like but #1 WOW...#2 FFXI[good game for females always helps]#3 EQ2.

Why do you say free?is it an item mall game?

Sub base healthy?

a game has to be doing really awful for ncsoft to shut it down.

I mean they still have Lineage and Lineage 2 running. I honestly think they shut down TR just to spite Garriott .

NCSOFT might keep a game going, but they are REALLY cheap on support. When i played L2 i joined only about 6-8 months after release and already i could never get a GM ,not even once. They release games and support them for a couple months then move resources to other or newer venues.Look at AION right now...remember the constant posting about botting and catching RMT/botters? that has quieted down a lot has it not?I bet they have quit the bot/RMT cherade,it is probably open season for them now.

BTW they did not can TR out of spite, they did it on purpose to save 20 million contract agreement up front to Mr.Garriot and if i am not mistaken, there was also some sort of guarantee deal to contract his brother as well.

If the OP paid attention to the Aion crowd/fanbois you would have heard a lot about GRIND.First of all that tells you the type of players you are dealing with, not real gamers, just people looking to hurry to end game PVP.Secondly that SHOULD tell you the game is not fun to play as leveling goes, other wise the term"GRIND" would NEVER crop up.

Soooo  if the OP does not care about the MAIN part of the game and is just looking for end game PVP ,then i guess he/she should be happy and content to get there and hang with same like minded players.

Its real simple

It means its free to play. You dont need to pay anything to play this game.

You do however pay for other things. That are optional

Its like if a cinema would advertise Free movie. But than charge people for sitting chairs. Still if you can stand for entire two and half hour , you can watch the film for free.

See i do not believe in OPTIONAL either.Anything that the developer deemed WORTHY to spend time/money and effort to develop and put into the game is obviously something the players want. The developer is not going to make some sort of content on the premise that nobody will want it.So it is already in the design of the game and is removed for the sheer sake of grabbing money.

When you release a game ,EVERY single piece of content is PART of that game,if you are calling it a FREE to play game, then ALL of that content should be FREE,there is no argument here ,no debating it.

If your premise in the game design is to make money from a cash shop, then the game should be called a cash shop or item mall game,it should NOT be called a Free to play game.

This must have been from some kind of influence,of everything FE has to offer, the graphics would of been my absolute last choice.

I guess that is why i am behind my PC,but honestly anyone that pays attention to the public, knows how much we have heard over and over graphics matter very little. In saying that ,graphics do matter a lot to me,and i did not feel FE needed that upgrade at this point in time.So I am not sure on the thought process here, they have ignored the public and myself,so i am not sure who they are pleasing with this move?

I did not like anything with Counterstrike.I remember trying it the first time years ago and i was like wtf,i was killed instantly no matter where i went or what i did. This was early in CS release,so i couldn't believe cheating was that bad already.

So i left the game did my usual checking around the internet and what i got was amazing, several scrolling pages of hacks and cheats for CS,i never played the game ever again. The animations were also quite cheesy and game play is not so skilled .Sure it has maps and few options but it is still mainly a point and click game.

My fave FPS combat style is that of UT99,the problem with that game is that net code and latency is such a huge factor.I have never seen so many weird glitches or anomalies in all the other games put together as i have seen in UT.

So it would be nice to see a game come out using DX10,better net code and still have the same feel as UT99.They ruined that game trying to cater to more people with goofy gimmicks and vehicles ect ect. Also they ruined it trying to improve the graphics, they actually made it an eye strain to play, the first cheats were obvious color cheats to make it easier on the eyes.

However the map design and weapon variations are what i am looking for in any FPS game, pretty hard to match UT99 for that but anything close i would be happy with....examples Dodging[NOT matrix crap]and weapon combos.I am not a big fan of powerups, that is the GIMMICK part i don't really like.

You don't appear to have read the rules of conduct.

I agree,i consider it rude to call out peoples real life names and abuse and flame them.I consider that EVERY single person involved in gaming is doing the best they can do,they do not mean to step on anyone toes, after all they are running a business, you think they want strife?

The best might not have been good enough or up to my personal standards, but in no way does it make them bad people or worthy of flaming.I do understand that many of these people ,do not have the ability to do any better and often times are influenced by others or the community,it is never a single person's fault to lay blame on.

I think you guys are reading too much into this.

My take is they have designed the game towards the casual, way more than FFXI,however they do not want to turn it into a complete joke.

So what i figure is they will have a system that limits how much you can teleport in a said amount of time.Obvious reasons? The poor design of course, with everyone being able to have access to every class, players can warp around non stop everywhere and abuse the system.Imagine combat is going bad,one of your on the ball group members decides to teleport everyone out,it makes combat risk a non factor.

This is why i do not and will not like the access to every class design,it has too many ways to abuse the game ,it really waters down the class system,to where it is near meaningless. It woudl especially make solo boss fights lame,as players coudl freely experiment with unbeatable bosses and just sleep or Bind or gravity+teleport out.

I do not think there will really be any punishment, they are just creating a story line to why you won't be able to teleport at will.A punishment at most may be something like not being able to teleport for 24 hours or something meaningless like that.

I like the clarity of the graphics, reminds me of VG,nice textures and detail the whole works.

However the crafting seemed to be cheap as many other games do it,just click some boxes and it's done?I wish a developer would take EQ's ideas and expand on it and make it better, all these years and developers still treat crafting with a superficial design.

The horse taming,....

I liked the animation of the horse ,but once you are riding it ,i wish they offered the CHOICE of 3rd or first person.IMO you really need the visuals in a RPG game, this again is why PVP ruins these games.I am positive they are utilizing first person only because of PVP,but in RPG's players like to ENJOY the graphics and the game, another reason why i don't like super fast animations of combat,i want to ENJOY the game.

Anyhoot the horse taming as you call it,showed nothing of the taming aspect, all i saw was you got on it and rode it in a straight line. This could have been a sort of mini game, where by you have to make counter actions to  avoid your horse from swaying all over OR bucking you off.If you are successful in the counter actions then maybe you gain skill points in horse taming.

Basically it is just a great idea, but i wish games when they create good ideas, take them to the next level, put the whole effort into the idea.

A perfect example...I love FFXI,but the fishing was a joke, they had a lot of things involved around fishing ,like contests, quests, cooking,Lu Shangs coveted fishing rod quest ect ect,HOWEVER ! the actual fishing and it's animations were garbage,it showed they did it with not much care into quality.Once again i say ,if yo uare going to implement a GOOD idea make it happen with quality in every aspect.

I personally do not like games based on movies, because your hands are tied for creativity.

Even that said, there is stil la lot you can do with a space game,i mean i look at EVE and there is a bazillion ideas that can be improved upon.

I will mention things that even a non sci-fi or space person would get into.

Example crews to fly ships, and maintain them in space,REALISTIC space stations that you can actually control, fight in,fight against guards, explore ect ect.

Have several planets to explore ,not as many as EVE because you just have solar systems with nothing really useful.I mean a realistic number like maybe 5-6 planets ,with each their own faction/race materials, unique crafting to each planet, each planet is a whole new exploration.

You should have tons of skills to actually learn and have lots of variation for each, such as ship repair skills, cooks, weapon specialist both ship weapons and hand to hand weapons.Technology experts, craftign and building experts ect ect.

You could design the game so that the player who actually gets to captain the ships, would be the highest RANK Captain,so you create a system such as FFXI had with fame through quests and missions. To make it even more unique you also need to have certain skills to captain the ship,so those who choose weaponry might not have what it takes to pilot a ship,as you would need say mapping or navigation skills, leadership skills that give bonuses to your crew members ect ect.

All of this without yet mentioning space travel or combat, there is a ton more you can do with that.It all comes down to if the developer wants to actually put in the time and effort to build an EPIC game,or just build something financially viable to make a profit. If it is all about profit and not the game, then you wil lnot get a good game, jus tthe same old same old we have been seeing over and over,it is obvious MOST developers are about the money ,NOT the creativity.

So yes they COULD make an EPIC STAR WARS game, but i would bet anything they won't,just another boring clone of all the other releases we see now a days.

All things that Brad M. has done I think he can design a great game.

I think Brad is a true gamer at heart and by natural calling he's a game designer....

I think Brad is NOT a good CEO nor should he ever thought he could be. His was coming off of EQ and wanted things done his way... so why not start your own company and put yourself on top if you want it your way..... (I like the idea myself.. but its flawed thinking)

Problem is CEO's usually don't design games... they run the business.. I think Brad got in over trying to do both.. a la mismanagement, office issues, personal issues etc...

The other thing is I truly believe Brad wanted to make the greatest MMO ever.. Look at the size of the world.. look at all the different races... all the different variety of classes... you don't see that in any new game.. I know companies run to make money.. but I don't think Brad though about making money.. I think he just thought the money would roll in with his ideas all bundled up in a game called 'Vanguard'.

Here is the thing.. I have to give it to Brad he has a solid vision of a game.. most people make games to cater to the masses.. I think Vanguard is a niche game in today's market. However I think the game design, world, content, lore, etc is beyond any other game out there (in the same age bracket).

Vanguard is a great game...Made by true gamers... Not business men.. and that's why it flopp

I do not agree, the vision for VG was a great game and it delivered, there was just not the player base to draw from.Where was VG going to get the player base from? They were already playing large established games,so VG had no chance,it was not a flawed design.

The simple reason is this,if you think Blizzard has the better design or way of thinking,do you honestly think if VG COPIED WOW ,but made their game BETTER quality ,the WOW players would jump ship?I for one do not believe they would even if GOD himself told them VG was a better game.WOW has the LARGE STAGE ,this is what the majority of gamers want a stage to brag on,they want to be a part of the BIG game,no matter how crappy or weak that game is ,it does not matter.

So what i am saying is that because SIGIL was not  a BRAND name and because it had no chance at all, there is NO design that would have worked for Brad,so it is not his fault.

It is obvious ,look no further than the game AION.This game was massively hyped, broadcasted to be the next biggest game behind WOW and literally had ZERO competition from other games in 2009.So you would figure with ZERO competition ,the game would muster 5 million plus easily? There lies the problem, that i have eluded to,they got what a maximum of 500k?That is about all there is to draw from, and there was even less when VG came out, because people were not yet bored of WOW and other games like FFXI and EQ2 still had booming pops.
