Cartoony as compared to what? The models in all games are very sad quality but no matter they are covered up by gear and this is where EQ2 vaulted above other games. The texture quality and lighting/shaders all add up to nice looking gear.A lo of the surroundings are not that great ,VG improved on that, however their texture use is still zillions of miles above Wow.

Wow's textures are pathetic at best, that is true cartoon looking junk.Detail is anotehr huge factor,a game like FFXI was very low poly, but they put the ffort into a lot of detail that normally you won't see in games.Exampel a pouch flapping up and down on the back of a goblin,a game like Wow just pastes one texture over the entire mob and it looks cheap.

I will agree however,i much liked EQ2 better on release than what it has become. My favourite game FFXI has gone the same route only worse,at least EQ2 there is stil la decent enjoyable ride,in FFXI you level cap in 3-5 days.

Not only has EQ2 goen the Wow route and really chepaened and dumbed down their game, but the actual things that might keep people around, they are trying to charge EXTRA for,VERY sad.

If yo uwant to keep players around, then treat them with respect, fix your bugs BEFORE working on cash shop items and worst of all,GIVE  well EARN those items to the players out of respect for supporting your game.To tell players their best content has to be paid for is a serious slap in the face of the customer and you know how that ends up>>>...cya later SOE !.

OP...

You answered your own question when you said no PVE content. It wouldn't be a AAA title unless it was a COMPLETE game. This is exactly how i rate games i look for all the things that should in there and are left out, then i know a developer is putting out AA or AAA quality.

I think people seriously do not understand what "role playing game" means. It does not mean let's go raiding or RvR conflict and the furthest thing it is distant from is playing for loot.

Can you see for example the Black knight or brave sir Roibin or his faithfull assistant Patsy running around the globe looking for loot..lol.They are ROLE playing, and their quest is to seek out the Holy Grail. Here is the kicker, they won't be receiving any XP  for that quest becuase that was ,still is and always be a retarded idea. You knw owhat happens on their quest? They fight Rabbits..KILLER rabbits and stop by and visit some scantily clad young fair maidens holed up in a castle.

That is Role playing and that is questing and that is AAA quality entertainment, not  this rubbish we see in most games...now bring me a .....SHRUBBERY !

Well the funny thing is i have been there all along the Smedley ride and i have not seen one inkling of game design.Smedley has always gone the route of simple game design,EQ2 crafting was sort of nice for awhile, until botters started to flood the market of all our hard work.

If i had of seen EQ deliver new type content outside of just making new maps and zones and icons,i would believe it is possible, but  as is the proof says otherwise.

There is yet another HUGE problem i have with SOE games>>>bugs and their incredible lazy effort to fix them.i am playing a rather simple SOE game right now and the amount of bugs is enough to drive me bonkers.Soem of the simplest coding ideas ,they still manage to botch them up.This tells me that SOE seriosuly rushes everything they do,yo ucan even see it when they changd the gear design in EQ2.They did it so half assed they had to continue fixing it for a year later.

It is too bad Smedley is not too bright, his vision of cash shop gaming will kill SOE and the very reason i wouldn't play EQ NExt even if it were the best game on the planet.

The simple answer is to experience FFXI in it's first few years. No other game comes close to how hard that game was.

Every single area you mentioned the game had it covered.I don't really want to go into each individual detail,FFXI was just to in depth to explain it all in less than 5-10 pages. The game is not even close to it's original design anymore, they have gone the way of Wowesque game design, meaning super easy mode, dailies type design. Then like all other games spend everyday grinding for end game loot...no thanks.

There was no easy handouts,no markers anywhere even the maps were hard to read.Crafting took forever and attaining the farmed items took a long time. The huge blemish on the games hard mode however was that once a game becomes hard like that it creates a lot of RMT activity. At one time i would say FFXI had the worst broken economy of any game i have ever seen. They fixed the rmt problem but ruined the rest of the game .../sigh.

That is the best i can explain it,anyone who played FFXI in the first year and actually played it's content, knows just how hard the game really was.I seriously laugh at what people now days call difficult. You don't die in other games from level 1-10,in FFXi you would die often.

3- 20 man raid zones, 2-10  man raid zones, 10 level 50 dungeons and 5 pvp warfronts.. Then add 3  solo instances.. "AA" advancement post 50, achievements with rewards,  8-10 various raid rifts and zone invasions.   This is what we have now (and more)  -within the first 9 months-  all polished and before tommorow's 1.6 release.  I am having a blast and looking forward for more to come.

Well i am glad i saw the  game design in my first month and quit the game.

I detest RAIDING,i have no interest what so ever in hanging out on a level cap player doing dungeon runs.I also do not care  about pvp.

My interest in a game stems from level 1> to cap.I do not want any hand holding along the way,no quest markers or map markers or easy handouts.I got my game in early years of FFXI,but it has gone south badly.Rift does not offer what i look for in a game which funny thing actually is a challenge.

In FFXI i was challenged from level1 and yes i did die at level 1 several times along the noob levels. That is because race/class mattered a lot and fights were challenging, the way i like a game to be made.

The attraction to Rift was when i heard it was using a sub class sytem.Well they didn't do a very good job,it was too many easy handouts and the point system left it being no better than a regular leveling game. Also when i play a RPG character ,i like to identify with my player,i like to say "I am playing a White MAge" and it actually feels like a whm.

When i was playing Rift i had all sorts of access to way too many ridiculous abilites/spells that didn't fit into any particular role playing,it was just a mish mashg of ideas.I had healing ,i was nuking,i had knockbacks a pet, just crazy, what could I actually say i was playing?A morphling? What made it worse was the easy handouts,i had all of these abilites and tons more all by level 8,just too many  easy handouts for my liking.

Also the zones seemed very small and i didn't like the WOW type starting area.I enjoyed starting in EQ2 inside a city  [Freeport ]or FFXI[Windurst] i started in massive sized towns. In Rift i started in a abandoned building,go figure they had all this tech around the area but only one broken down building.

I will show you why i don't like large battles or get into Raiding,it is nothing but an incredible SPAM fest. >>> SPAM not my idea of fun.

I don't discuss it nor care much for it because the design is a single player game, much easier to pull off than a MMO.

Does this really have quality?Example buildings have insides and not all instances. Are viewing areas large or typical console smallish?

Biggest question of all,is it just another Wow type game following quest markers around?I NEVER liked hand holding in games what so ever,it detests me.I don't want arrows nor anything telling me where to go,where to jump, what level to pull ect ect.

Basically another Wow but in single player mode would be even more painful,no way could i do it .not even if someone bought the game for me.So is it open ended or painfully linear?

I miss my old days of good rpg's example the Might N magics and Wizardry series. Even Ultima was a good game for it's time, these new games all seem like they are turned out of a repeating factory line.

SO TRUTH be told,is this just the same old or not?

It won't matter what happens to it,imo it has never been big it surrounds al lthe crap games.

The better games will remain monthly subs and the free to play will give you free to play quality.Koreans do not hype up PR advertising over here,or you would hear another GW2 hype up show going on about free to play.

TSW i know is going subscritption and there will be others.

SOE i know is going all out cash shop and Blizzard tends to follow SOE's lead,so i really am not usre on that one .but i think Blizzard will remain sub since they have the fanbase still.

There is only a few big develoeprs capable of producing a great game,so it's not going to be a big deal.

It is really too bad more people did not get to play FFXI in it's heyday, they would have got to see what it was like to game without chasing quest markers everyday. Now with Wow and other copies, this is all people know and see,so this is what they call AAA quality, this is why so many have gone f2p,they don't offer anything above questing treadmills.

There will be other great games and i will pay to play them and i will not support the freeware cash shop games.

I think we got side tracked a little, this is more about end game than balance.

End game has nothing to do with balance, becuase in essence your game is over, that is why it would be called end game.I find it comical to see so many people worry about gear for a player that is already done, imo it is a waste of time.

YES this is a poorly designed game because i played FFXI for 8 years and you never worried or even cared about end game.In FFXI the entire game was a ride and if you were waiting for friends you could camp rare boss mobs while farming. The reality is that FFXI was not huge on gear most was all accesible and the rare stuff for the most part did not separate players from performing well in a group.

That is the difference between good design and poor ones, the poor ones leave players thinking about rushing to end game, becuase there is no other game worth caring about.FFXI it was about the group and balance NEVER matters in a group becuase you are working together. You could craft to attain better stats and in FFXI food mattered more than any other game. You could eat food to give yoruself a lot better accuracy, that would be much more important than say a better sword that never hits.

The actual end game in FFXI was a HUGE time sink, but it was a good thing because not many worried about it then. The class design was fun, grouping was fun and there was always tons to do if not grouping. The biggie was being able to further advance your player through new classes becuase FFXI was the first game to actually get class design right.Your player did not end at level cap,it continued thorugh sub classes, this gives your player tons more longevity and usefulness.

Bottom line is these other games need to worry about balance or what class should be nerfed because the design of the game is shallow not done well at all.Grouping games are the proper way to go ,no excuses ,you go the solo and raid or PVP route you ask for a poor community and selfishness and crying and drama ect ect.

It was never a thing of the present for me.This is something that is a result of poor game design.

I played FFXI for 8 years and NEVER felt like i was at end game nor did i just hangout on a end game level. The game gave you reason to go back and level and enjoy other classes because it used a sub class design.FFXI pretty much played out like a real life game,yo udidn't kill things in seconds, you were not rich in seconds, you didn't get xp for doing a quest, crafting took some serious farming and Bosses were not spawning every 10 minutes now where they dropping rare loot every kill. There was no markers on npcs or on the maps.

I find Raiding is just a teenager thing, they like to attach a STIGMA or make it sound cool or L33t.Me i just do content,if it calls for a large group then we form a group and do the content. There is no need to give it a title or call it anything cool.

For me if a game is all about end game,it has no game.I never gave Raiding any respect,i did it and laughed at it as it was really a pathetic way to give your game content.

I never got into MUDS,internet was not easy to get where i live,it even took me a long time to get DSL/Cable because the lines needed to be upgraded.

I remember being on AOL and it was unplayable for gaming, anyone that tried gaming on AOL had pings around 10,000 so not sure how you people managed it.

So while you guys were mudding,i was just playing all the best single player games, which go back to around 1981.

My first real introduction to gaming was by a friend who worked in the industry, told me try out Castle Wolfenstein, that goes way back to the same 1980's.

Wizardry was my first RPG type game also way back in 1981.I remember having a nightmare to setup a pc to run a game, config the sound card/vid card setup memory batch files/boot discs ect ect.I owned the apple2 and a commodore 64 as well ,i even made my own hockey game back on the commodore 64.Geesh i even owned a TRS80 by radio shack lol.

Man i can't believe how many years ago that was ../sigh.

I sort of wish i was able to join in the fun of the MUD era,but i just didn't have internet then.

If the OP is wondering,i don't get excxited over any game,i wait until i see the end result and then play it and have some fun.

I never understood the fanbois attitude,i sort of saw it emerge on You Tube as people get down right nasty defending THEIR music or whatever. To me Star Wars is VERY old, done already in oh so many ways, seen all the movies including the orignal at a   Drive -in.

I guess i can understand some excitement for those that truly desire a Sci-Fi based game because imo there is nothing worth playing, not even Eve.I never really liked Sci-Fi gaming or so i thought, but then i realized my fave games are Unreal Tournament and Quake,so i guess i do have a spot for sci-fi gaming. It is more a case of the pew pew i don't like.I did not like the pew pew fire in Eve nor the weak effects of a light sabre.I enjoy weapons/eefects like a UT99 Shock Combo,it looks cool, sounds cool and is a cool ability weapon.

When i watch SWTOR videos i see weak light sabres but then waht really kicks in is the  pew pew laser guns.I guess if the developer put a lot more effort into the textures/sounds and effects of the weapons ,i would really get into it.I also like weapons thta have mulitple firing modes, example my fave Shock combo,it adds an extra element of fun to gaming.

This article was pretty much 90% about time constraints.

I do not believe in time constraints,he talks about trusting, yet still related it all to time being the most important factor.

Yes i know i would never make a producer because my morals would always get in the way,but that is the way i am even in my own job.The difference from job and gaming is that gaming can always cut corners or totally eliminate stuff,we can't do that in the real world. In the real world you MUST get the work done with satisfactory quality determined ONLY by the customer, game developers do not abide by the same morals as real life.In game developement we will never know if something was left out and we never really know what is in store for the end result or the future of the game.In real life yo upre order or ask for soemthing to be built, you know full well what you are getting and as a customer, you don't care about time restraints.

This is EXACTLY the way i critque games and yes i can EASILY see when corners are cut and if a game is just not delivering the kind of effort it could be.I speak with my money,if i don't see what i want for effort,i don't support a game.I broke this rule ONLY once ,i guess i felt a soft spot for Indie devs,so i supported Fallen Earth for a couple months.

There is and has ONLY been one developer ever, that actually does hold up profits for the sake of their game, that is Square Enix as witnessed by FFXIV.

As for the "How we got here" title ,i was expecting something different.

Example we started by hiring a producer,we decided on the art direction,we decided what mechanics and what type of class sytem and how we came about those decisions. How was the funding decided on?Was their outside investors, was there a definite time and cost cap?How did you decide on quests and models and textures and music, you know the actual "how we got here".

If you're a DAoC vet then I don;t understand why you're even looking at a game like SW:TOR, let alone complain that it won't sort out you RvR fix. There are other games for that, SW:TOR is about the story and cinematic star wars experience.

I hope it is a LOT more than that as it would simply be no more than a single player game design, exactly what i was afraid it would be from Bioware.

You are playing a ammo world in what is suppose to be a RP environment,RP does not mean following a linear pattern or playing the exact way they want you to play,it is suppose to feel like YOUR game.Besides Star wars lore and story has been seen for over 20 years now,i highly doubt we will be intrigued by any story at all.

A game strictly designed around the story means everyone is doing the exact same thing aside from good and evil of course, this would not be good game design. That would be exactly what makes Wow so bad,you play their game and their way, then it becomes so boring everyone cries for end game. That design worked on 10 million noob online gamers, but now everyone is more knowledgable and realizes how bad that design really is.It is a design that has people wanting 2% of an entire game,if it is a true MMORPG world then it should be 100% desirable.

If this game ends up being only a single player story game and i am not saying it is,then it's replay value and continued value after you witness the sotryline will be null and void.I am sure they would do more for the game than rely on end game pvp to keep players around after the first 2-3 months.

I don't believe them for one minute, they most certainly can restore the information off the hard drives or from other sources.I would say their game was in poor state so they made up bs to quietly shut the game down.Hangame is a pretty big publisher they would be running their own versions of the game and the developer would have other versions of the game and i am sure some of the bigshots had the game and information on their home pc's.This was simply a game that wanted to shut down.

There is that fun thing of messing around building stuff that people enjoy however, that seems to be the only thing that has people intrigued about Minecraft.

I mention this becuase you can get a MUCH better game engine to mess around with  in any of the unreal game engines which are all free with the games or just d/l the free newest UDK .

You not only can do more than what Minecraft can do but you would be learning alot about how games work and are made and all for free.Yes you can have creatures in your own work and you can even go the lazy route and d/l mods that create creatures for you.You can even run your work and invite friends to play.If you have any C++ code background you can do even more,3d graphic/modelling engine knowledge, then you will really be rocking.

If you already have the skills you can actually build something better than Minecraft by yourself and in about a month or two, then spend more time expanding your maps/mods whatever.

There really is no positive side to spyware because anything and everything they need to know is in the player/game logs already.I know games like to monitor player tendencies and stuff for tweaking/Beta but this would have nothing to do with it.The problem i have with it,is if Developers are SO worried about what we are doing, why are they not showing the same effort to crack down on rmt and cheating in their games?

I know for fact SOE has sold this type of information to various firms ,including marketing firms,so i wouldn't doubt others are doing it as well.Does it really hurt the player? No not really ,but like i said ,show the same effort to look after your game/cheating then nonsense like this would be more acceptable.

So that makes this 100% spyware to which there is a reason there is thousands of programs to  block just that.

They will never go down. When you read name Blizzard on the box of game you know it is epic

A developer selling 1990's tech that should be freeware is nothing to brag about. You don't charge for 1990's tech in the year 2011,well i guess you do and can get away with it.

As much money and as big as Blizzard is they still needed to license an engine for Titan, why?Well the Warcraft engine is an embarrasment to such a large developer and just not capable of a really good game.

I can make a huge compilation of Blizzard's inept abilities and poor design, but it doesn't really matter,if you are having fun playing their game go for it.

I just know that Blizzard can do a LOT better ,they are ripping off their customers with freeware tech and freeware quality.

They never made Wow low tech to get more users,if that was the case they would have made it for console ,EXACTYLY what Sqaure Enix accomplished with FFXI.You know why they never did?Well the dev you are bragging about was NOT capable of porting to consoles that is why Starcraft Ghost got scrapped and why they had to hire outside Blizzard to try and make it work.

Btw Diablo is NOT even Blizzard's game, they purchased that developer.Their tech for Diablo and Starcraft looks the same as 1995 Command n Conquer tech.

This is a developer definitely not worth the praise it gets,i am sure other devs with much better skills are extremely disheartened to see fanbois/marketing wins out over skills.

I think the biggest reason on that list is a classless system.  I still to this day think going classless was a step forwards in MMO, not backwards.  It allows you to be what you want to be.

I do  not agree what so ever ,the PERFECT design was showed to the world by FFXI.It is called a wel ldesigned sub class system. It was designed very well, not like other games that simply throw stuff together. This sub class allowed you to design your player with hundreds of options. The big differenmce is that in FFXI although the design allowed felxibility, you remained in the ROLE PLAYING envirnoment becuase you still had a distinct feel to your class.

As for the 5 reasons listed.

You cannto\\ot compare housing ina single player game to what is capable in a MMO,it is like night and day.ArcheAge is going to do much better anyhow and in a MMO setting.

I think i would enjoy Skyrim as a MMO ,however it is just too hard to compare what you see in a single player game and what you would see in a MMO.It is also VERY easy to design the entire game i na single player environment because you do not have all the variables of other players.

I don't like when people ask others what THEY will want to play, however based on your info EQ2x is your game.

There is a well established guild full of freebie players on the Freeport server,i think it is called Fidei Sensor or soemthing close to that. You can play the game totally free and can even make multiple accounts for free. You don't buy anything..keyword >>>FREE.There is of course some restirctions in playing for free, but as i said you can play for free or pay to unlock things which is still cheaper than any sub fee or having to buy any game.

It is ver ycasual you can get your levels if that is your thing, crafting goes by fast and as intuitive as any other game.Several mounts, bazillion quests, tons of classes/cities/ zones.

I feel sorry for indie games, they really have no chance in now a days market, there  is just way too much competition.

I think there is a good side to Indie games however and that is i beleive they are usually using rich people's money to fund these games,in otherwords ..investors.Using investors money that is literally disposable cash allows them to attempt game developement and learn from their mistakes or learn to never try it again lol.
