GamePro bad opinion on SWTOR
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/05/11 6:13:09 PM
I watched the video. They were honest in their opinions and I can respect that. Either they loved it or hated it, they had some good points. I don't think that star wars fans appreciate honest opinions tinged with negative feelings towards star wars related merchandise. |

My decision for TSW is to wait until 2 months post launch. After that all the hype will have died down and the reviewers that I trust would have already thrown in their lots on the game. I also was very excited about this one until I discovered certain things. 1) The Subscription + Box sale + Microtransaction Model Big turnoff for me. Feels like it has the potential to double, if not, triple dip into the players wallets. I would accept either - or, but all three seems like a heavy investment into a game regardless of the companies past performance. 2) EA got involved as a publisher. Another huge turnoff for me. If EA wasn't notorious for dirty tricks like this, then I wouldn't be as apprehensive of doing business with them. I also have some lingering doubts due to what they pulled on Steam. They (EA) acts like a selfish, uncaring, shovelware producing house that cares nothing of what the players want, just focused on shareholders. 3) 2012 is going to be a big year. Sure is, with a slew of big name titles being released next year I feel that I will be selling myself short by pre-dedicating myself to a game that I haven't yet played. I want to windowshop for a bit and then let my natural gaming instincts decide of what and where I want to spend my time and money. I do have to at some point in time buy a Wii and Xenoblade Chronicles after supporting OpRa's camaign. I am not as easily sold (hyped) as I used to be. Beta invite or no beta invite, it's going to take a damn good game to win me over. |

Originally posted by CharSol I wouldn't say something here if it wasn't true. You might have been talking about the last stages of Aion's open beta stage. I was there for that all the way back to CBT Weekend 1 because I pre-ordered it at my local gamestop. By the time you were playing with everyone and his brother, I had pulled my pre-order. Maybe your situation was different than mine, doesn't make mine untrue, just makes it different. |

Originally posted by headphones I'll explain: That last part had nothing to do with SWTOR, it had mainly to do with the two companies I mentioned. Just another way that publishers are using beta as an excuse to get players to pay money for something that used to be free. Coyote, the original article writer detailed some differences between his experience in past betas and I was merely pointing out some other new tactics that some devs are adopting that annoy me. It was a new paragraph, new topic, unrelated to the SWTOR point. Hope that cleared things up. |

Not that I'm bitter either but I didn't get into the SWTOR beta, or the Secret World beta for that matter. Pfft, just means that I'm going to wait until its released and listen to what certain parts of the community says. Then and only then will I plunk down some cash for the game. When a company holds a beta and requires people to pre-order or even order the game client before they get to play it, I have a problem with that. That was a dirty trick that Trion used and NCSoft used with Aion. Played both and cancelled both pre-orders. I do regret not following through with Aion though, it actually turned out to be a halfway decent game.

General: Five Reasons Skyrim Should be an MMO
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/30/11 1:10:13 PM
I played MO for a month, because I got the client on a sale and that came with it. Buggy mess with nothing but griefers and GM's that gave you anything you wanted back if you died from your horse bugging out. And it bugged out all the time. Anywho, left that like the fat ugly chick at the end of a bar. I don't know what to think of SWTOR, I passed up the beta and the most exposure I have are watching some other players streams. It looked well put together, but at times the players were like "wtf is this", so I knew there were problems. Unfortunately, Todd Howard from Bethesda was right when he said, "I'm not really an MMO guy. I respect them, I look at them, but I don't play them. It feels more real to me when I'm the hero and it's crafted for that." If they turned TES into an online franchise, then it would kill off the modding community, who serve two purposes: 1) They fix all of the games shortcomings, 2) Provide DLC and both are done for free for the company and the playerbase. Not a bad deal if you ask me. |

General: Five Reasons Skyrim Should be an MMO

Mortal what... That travesty still alive? I think at one point the dev's of all the big MMO's approached Bethesda and paid them not to make an MMO. If done right, it would crush many of the weaker ones. |

EVE Online: Crucible Battlecruiser Spotlight
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/30/11 2:06:55 AM
Originally posted by Caila There is no local in WH space, not unless someone speaks in local, and you never speak in local in W-space, its an unwritten rule. I lived in a WH for the latter half of my EVE tour with my ally. Spamming D-scan while you do everything - ratting, hacking, mining, Pi, escalations etc. C5's are rough because invaders can bring almost anything in due to the latency of the holes. At least in null you have your local, but that's not always going to show you where people are coming in from. Mining in empire space, sure - afk then click roll it over into your cans or preferably an orcas hold. If your using cans then you are subject to the age-old pirate pastime of flipping. And don't forget the random hulkageddon that might start at any time. What are they up to now IV, V? Don't know if Helicity even plays any longer. Anything you do in EVE can run a risk that balances out with the reward ratio. More risk - more reward, less risk - vice versa. If someone wants to mine then that is their choice of play style, and no one can effectively tell anyone what play style is the best, because everyone is different. |

Not bad for a first post. I totally agree. In CCP's "Greed is good" newsletter, they basically outlined how in using this model would greatly profit from the competitive nature of players. |

What bothered me about Conan was that they chose that old IP over working on Anarchy Online. I think that the players needed a better version of that game rather than another sword and scorcery hack and slash. |

I ran the benchmark and scored below 1000 and I think my time to freeload this is over. What really turned me off was that an oldtimer from FFXI went and played it and came back to XI saying that it was boring. Going to keep tabs on it though. Guess I will have to settle for VS and FFXIII-2 in January. |

The Secret World: First Ever Hands-On Preview
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/21/11 9:24:24 PM
Hmmm. The Secret World. I have been monitoring this game since its announcement a few years ago. Has it been years already? Sheesh. Went to the forums that were teeming with speculation and activity. There was an ARG, I got involved and have some nifty little coded card for it. Nothing happened since then, the ARG's stopped and everyone was hangin off of Tornquists twitter feed. The forums are still an active place for conspiracy theory, speculation and conversation about TSW, check it out. Since then I have learned much more about TSW. I am intriqued, yet find it equally hard to get overly excited about it anymore. I do like 500 skills and no template, create your own class. I do like no armor or weapons in the game, everything is based off buying skills. I do not like the fact that some skills have the possibility to be bought from the CS. I do not like the fact that it may become a meta-gaming min-maxers dream, "this build or go home-can you heal, I'll tank-we need a fire mage" etc... I do like the fact that it has three realms or factions. I do not like compartmentalized PvP, like warzones, but if its the zone is available 24/7 and you can jump in, jump out then it will create a nice diversion for questing/dungeon crawling. I do like the real world setting and real world research. Google was, is and will always be my friend. Please admit that you never consulted a wiki about any game while playing it. I do like the Illuminati, since they are based in NY and I'm from NY, it seems like a perfect fit. I do not like games with subscriptions and item malls. It is what I call double-dipping the player. I do not like overhyped games cough ::: Star wars :::cough::: especially when they do not live up to it and it costs people money to find out the hard way. INB4: "Yeah, but you bought Skyrim on release!" Yes, I did, but am a big fan of the series, Bethesda has an incredible track record and I was already talking to Australia about it who were saying OMGZGOTY! What I am going to do, what I suggest to anyone: Let this game get released, sit back and let the first-nerd-herd (tm) run in and watch the reaction for a month or two. If the reviews and attitude are overly positive, then you will know what to do. Don't get burned again. |

Can someone confirm if they reinstated the monthly fee, I can pick up the CE on eBay for 20 bucks. Is it worth it? |

Have you tried Batmuds? It's been advertised on the wee bottom banner of this site. I went to the website, downloaded the client and never followed through. Got sidetracked by a new game. |

I'm not here to criticize anyone's picks, but share my own. I love everyones responses, while some might not have great compatibility as full fledge MMO's, they would all make good games in their own right. |
