I have only returned to WoW post patch 4.3 after logging out in 2007 before TBC hit the shelves so this is all new to me too. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Bonus Series? Or Troll Series? You Decide!
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/09/12 3:07:51 PM
The excerpt from TORhead.com sounded like someone was in a rush. What are we rushing to? The end...the end of what? If I was on a planet and found it teeming with content I would not be willing to leave it so soon. But NOT being able to leave restricts my sense of freedom and cancels any open-world aspect that the game may have. Even quest hubs can make you feel very confined to a certain space if you have to finish all of one quest chain to travel to the next hub. What happened to sandbox MMORPG gaming? It seems like a thing of the past lately. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Official SWTOR Review

Good read but I didn't see an opinion on how the crafting would affect the ingame economy. Is there an auction market? How is the market run? What is the value of the items that can be crafted/discovered and how will that make your character more valuable as a whole? Some key things that stand out in a game (to me) and that are often missing in most mmorpg reviews. I have an idea. |

General: Skyrim - Resistance is Futile

Originally posted by kattehus I LOL'd hard when I heard that. Yeah, I love the game, but feel that there are some annoying parts of the game that could have easily been remedied but haven't. 1) Still no 3D Object control to turn and place a held object. 2) All bookcases should have the "place book" function. 3) Lydia...I want to go....get out of my way. 4) Giant launching. 5) Umm...no custom spell creation? 6) Umm...no custom enchantment creation? 7) The armorer/enchant exploit. I don't use it. 8) Compare the spell list from Morrowind to Oblivion then to Skyrim. We were robbed. 9) [SPOILER ALERT] Ok, I lead the _____ guild now. Why can't I recruit people? 10) SKYRIM GUARDS: Y U NO GET BETTER KNEE ARMOR??? 11) CONSOLES: Y U NO GET MODS??? I feel that in spite of the scope of this game, Bethesda was counting on players to fix some of these things with mods that should have been done from launch. I am looking forward to the day of saying, "Back when I played Vanilla Skyrim. Get off my lawn." I could have written more but then I...oh forget it. |

Good read, Isabelle. Skyrim is a really great game as she was describing. Yet, even though I enjoy the quiet, I always seem to wonder how long I would be able to go without some human contact. MMO's are the offspring of single player RPG's because it is more fun to play an RPG with someone else. Personally, this website can talk about RPG's all day because it is as comparing two parts of a tree: While one is above ground, open and connectend with an entire world, the other are roots that where is began to grow and now hold it in firmly, and that rooting unfortunately is solitary and confinded. I do love Skyrim and have been playing it, but also have picked up another older MMO and I am enjoying that as well. |

General: 5 Other Movies That Could Be MMOs

Originally posted by bamdorf What you're talking about is the world of Middle Earth that was created by JRR Tolkien through literarary works and has influenced much of the fantasy genre of the "game worlds" that you mentioned. This was a world that was fleshed out over a lost series of books surrounding the LotR trilogy. I read an essay about Tolkien that stated he created his own languages, such as elvish and created the world of Middle Earth just for a place to speak it. I don't believe that LOTRO is just about quest givers names and places. That game was the physical manifestation of that world. If the world that William Gibson began fleshing out in the Sprawl trilogy became a movie, then was made into an MMORPG, (a dream of mine) that would be along the lines the same thing. Just not as intensly detailed as Tolkien's world, because it's set in our reality, would still create a very good setting and scenario. |

Originally posted by cerebrix I was just about to say that. Why make a terrific IP such as bladerunner a boring old red vs blue factional warfare game. You have so many aspects that go into the cyberpunk and dystopian genre that you would be really selling yourself short if you did it that way. Not only did the Riddick IP have so many races, it had so many planets to choose from. I think one of the best trys at multifactional, sandbox mmo was Fallen Earth. |

An Open Letter to Bioware EA
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/10/11 1:50:11 AM
Sorry it didn't work out OP. You should have done a bit of homework befor trotting off to Amazon to make sure that the product was viable in your territory. More so should have done due diligence before recommending it to your bros. Lesson learned. You will still give them your money because you want their product. This is not the only dissapointment here in the states I can tell you about: over 500,000 customers who reserved their copy from Walmart had their pre-orders "accidentally" deleted by Walmart, no recoursive action. Now they were given the option to reserve it through EA's Origin service. How convienient...how shady.
I keep forgetting that this is the only game in town. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: SWTOR: Rules of Enragement
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/08/11 7:10:42 PM
Coyote, one of the funniest new additions to the site. Great read.
But one question: Exactly WHY can't we or the people playing it, compare it to WoW? Is it because its not an MMO, not fantasy, not coming from years of developmental mistakes and triumphs that other games have made. I understand the whole apple and orange analogy, but aren't they both in the same food group? |

Originally posted by MikeB Sorry, I though this meant moderation of the website, not just the indiviual forums. But I do still stand on that this is a privelege and there has to be some type of moderation, because without it, would fall into absolute chaos. Thanks mike. Shooting you a note now. |

Originally posted by MikeB I actually have some feedback. This website is not a right, its a privelige, Even though it is free, there are priveleges in using it. There are rules, I know if I break a rule, I get disciplined, learn and move on. I am no angel, but I have improved. However, to turn everyones attention to the blog section on the bottom of the front page. Yep, there, under the developer blogs there is the highlighted blog section. 3 of the more active blogs are mikeb's, paragus and teala. The other ones are dormant and one of them is a developer blog also. My point is I would like to see more active blogs there and even make it a bit competitve. Give players a reason to vie for that section by how many times they make it into the highest rated section. Design a system that would enable active bloggers to enter into the highlighted blog section and for dormant writers (raises hand) would leave if they haven't had any activity in a certain amount of time. Blogging would become a bit more competitive and also giving the community members, myself included, a chance to take on some of the spotlight. I've read many great blogs here and then they fall into obscurity. If you, meaning the moderating community, give members like myself and young budding writers the opportunity to pull themselves away from the forums and create some good content for the website through blogs, everyone would benefit. It would create a personal forum that players can voice their opinions in full form and be heard. I might even blow the dust off of MMO MONEY. No, I think that needs life-support more than a dusting, but it would motivate me more, I'm sure you would see more writers step up to plate. And yes, I even learned that there are rules and responsibilty for that as well. Remember that mike? |

This is a sensitive topic and I am running a risk by speaking in a highly moderated thread, but this is my opinion.
I have friends that are all sorts of gamers; some are pirates, some are strictly consoles, some are honest pc gamers, some are mixed. They all have one thing in common, they refuse to play games they do not like. Looking at it from a moral point of view: the pirate is ultimately the big bad guy. But from an ECONOMIC point of view, he's the smartest. 1) He gets to try full copies of games and never pays a cent, finding out really if he likes it or not using a very low risk strategy. 2) He gets to play rather obscure games that can't readily be found anywhere to buy. 3) He is part of a large community that relies heavily on sharing and honesty. Honesty that its a legit copy and not a virus that is going to wreck your rig and sharing for other members. He tells me the real ins and outs of some games that I feel compelled to thank him for saving me money. Oh, he also goes and buys the games he really likes to 1) support the company because he likes them and 2) because there usually are extras that he wants to own. His motto is:" I give money to companies that makes games I like, and I don't play games I don't like." My other friends usually are the ones that either get stuck owning a bad game or take losses by selling them back and using the money to buy something else. Ethically, there are just some things I will not do, but economically its very attractive as I do not take as many risks. So I listen to all of them, make up my mind, if I do not feel its worth the money, I wait until I find it deep discount. But there are just some games I cannot find, those are the ones that I turn to the dark side of the force to supply me with. Just being honest. And before someone decides to throw a stone, ask yourself, did you pay for every single music file, pdf file, or game on your hard drive or shelf? |

GamePro bad opinion on SWTOR
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/05/11 7:13:09 PM
I watched the video. They were honest in their opinions and I can respect that. Either they loved it or hated it, they had some good points. I don't think that star wars fans appreciate honest opinions tinged with negative feelings towards star wars related merchandise. |

My decision for TSW is to wait until 2 months post launch. After that all the hype will have died down and the reviewers that I trust would have already thrown in their lots on the game. I also was very excited about this one until I discovered certain things. 1) The Subscription + Box sale + Microtransaction Model Big turnoff for me. Feels like it has the potential to double, if not, triple dip into the players wallets. I would accept either - or, but all three seems like a heavy investment into a game regardless of the companies past performance. 2) EA got involved as a publisher. Another huge turnoff for me. If EA wasn't notorious for dirty tricks like this, then I wouldn't be as apprehensive of doing business with them. I also have some lingering doubts due to what they pulled on Steam. They (EA) acts like a selfish, uncaring, shovelware producing house that cares nothing of what the players want, just focused on shareholders. 3) 2012 is going to be a big year. Sure is, with a slew of big name titles being released next year I feel that I will be selling myself short by pre-dedicating myself to a game that I haven't yet played. I want to windowshop for a bit and then let my natural gaming instincts decide of what and where I want to spend my time and money. I do have to at some point in time buy a Wii and Xenoblade Chronicles after supporting OpRa's camaign. I am not as easily sold (hyped) as I used to be. Beta invite or no beta invite, it's going to take a damn good game to win me over. |

Originally posted by CharSol I wouldn't say something here if it wasn't true. You might have been talking about the last stages of Aion's open beta stage. I was there for that all the way back to CBT Weekend 1 because I pre-ordered it at my local gamestop. By the time you were playing with everyone and his brother, I had pulled my pre-order. Maybe your situation was different than mine, doesn't make mine untrue, just makes it different. |
