Classes are so boring.

Best is a sandbox game where you can learn any skill, independent of your predetermined "class".

HAHA! I freaking LOVE it! Do it.

I think you men need to get over yourselves. Games are not just for men anymore and this just proves it.

I think it's assanine when men play female characters. It's so gay. Don't give me that crap about not wanting to look at a male toon's butt. How childish. It's pixels, not real life. Men who play female characters worry me. Are they cybering with other men getting off on it? That's dishonest and in the past, it has caused problems for others in real life.

That's my opinion and I think it is a fantastic idea!

Man this logic is so full of holes, it's hard to resist answering in kind...

Personally you are the one with a problem. it's not a question of want, it's a question of rather. Yeah, it's all pixels, so why are you so shocked that someone might chose to play a female toon. Maybe you are are really an elf/undead/dwarf in real life. I know I'm not.

As for thinking it's gay to play female characters, it just goes to show how immature you are, or how afraid of your own masculinity you are that you feel threatened by anyone playing a girl toon. I guess you never played Tomb Raider, No One Lives Forever or any of those games either. Next thing you know, you would be probably raiding your mom's closet and wearing her underwear.

And no, guys playing girl toons are not cybering other guys. But I would venture to say you once tried to cyber some cute girl elf, only to find out it was a 40 year old dude. Maybe that's where your trauma stems from. Either that or you tried to marry one or even showered some girl toon with all your money only to find out that you were suckered.

A basic rule of thumb is, always assume that that toon hottie is a guy. If you want to find a date, go to a dating site, or better yet, get a life.

is for me, If i rather play a toon that i consider easy on the eyes then that is my prerogative and does not lessen my manhood one iota to do so.

My favorite reason for playing a female toon:

"if you are going to spend hours looking at your toon's rear end, then it might as well be a rear end you like looking at!"

What could make you feel more heroic then walking over a path that most would chose to fly and avoid all the danger?

Once again, flying is a choice, and as stated by others, usually a high level one at that. A little while back I was playing an elf in Perfect World. While all elves in that game can fly from level one, I usually chose to walk. Walking made the grind easier and I could also collect plant to do potions. Something I would miss had I flown.

In all honesty, the only times I really flew, was when I was faced with a huge expanse of creatures that were way beneath my level and would add nothing if I took them on.

Now if they made you fly it would be a different story all together.

Flying is an option. If you feel it cuts down on your fun, walk...

I for one rather walk, but if you want to fly, more power to you.

Personally if you want a browser game to fiddle around with an hour or two a day, I'd recommend Heroes of Gaia far over Evony. Players in Evony spam a lot, or tend to be rude (If you don't play fast enough or get strong enough they will just boot you from an allince without warning, and then tell their players to farm you)

Maybe i was just lucky, but my experience wasn't like that at all. Yes, I got invaded, but I turned right back around and sent my armies after the guy who attacked me. Yes, I got raped, but they were so impressed at my chutzpa that they invited me to their guild. I had an awesome experience until I finally got bored and moved on.

In order for a popular single-server game to be done RIGHT, it would have to have an absolutely IMMENSE game world. One the size of EVE. It would have to have such a staggering amount of content that it would be nearly impossible to accomplish in any setting other than outer space.

While I agree with most of what you said, I don't agree that the game would have to be in in outer space. You could have different nations, continents or even an archipelago.

Originally posted by Yunbei Sheesh I am really tired of people telling "EVE this EVE that", usually "EVE had that first", "EVE has that better" or the like. I don't even think EVE is a MMORPG. RPG needs a role to play and in EVE you are a spaceship. Not to say its a bad game, but it is SO out of everything I consider a MMORPG and a game that interests me, god EVE could invent money shitting and I could not care a rats ass.

I guess when you are a pioneer, people will keep pointing out that you had something others are calling "new".

Being shardless is not new, unusual at the moment, yes, but definitely not new.

Also Yunbei, you obviously never played EVE or if you did, you never got it. In EVE you are not a spaceship. You are a pilot. When I used to play EVE I had nothing less then 15 ships, each with it's own uses, strength and limitations.

And by the way, money shitting was already invented years ago. It was called a "Bling Gnome" in Dungeon Runners.

I always thought if you must have a sci-fi, space opera combat game, Star Trek would be the last on my list. Sure, DS-9 had combats but it simply paled in comparison to another series from the same time: Babylon 5.

Now that would be a killer IP to have as an MMO. Real combat, races that looked and where radically different (instead of the just having a wierd set of ears or nose). And the feeling of unpredictability dread and hope at the same time that no other space opera has ever had.

And I would love to fly a Vorlon ship...

It was actually pretty enjoyable and can get pretty addicting too.

The only drawback is the time it takes for certain high level upgrades. We are talking days here. Unless you spend RL money to speed things up. Other then that it's actually a good game. Good graphics for a browser game and it seems the development team did a great deal of medieval research.

I guess I missed the memo too, oh well....

And yes, boycotting a company over a game is a bit much. And thinking that it had any effect on the company is pure delusion .

All I have to say is I actually enjoyed AO and played it for several years. But I have to confess that I was a part of the beta testers, and seeing what happened during that phase I chose to wait a whole year before actually paying for the game.

I am very excited about The Secret World. More excited than anything else I have seen in years (except maybe for Fallen Earth). But Funcom being Funcom I think I'll contain my excitement and wait till the game has been around for a year or so.

This is not  a boycott, it's looking both ways before you cross the street.

My test said dragon. I guess that's pretty close. After all I was born in the year of the dragon.

Close second would be Illuminati.

A Conan themed game that has something that might be considered sexist?!!?

I'm shocked! I always thought that voluptuous women running around half naked and plenty of beefcake to match as totally wholesome family entertainment. Doesn't get more PC then that! Now you have shattered my reality and life will never be the same for me.

I am not against  cash shops, and I have and still enjoy quite a few games that have them. I'm also not against subscription games, for the same reasons.

I do find that having both models is a bit dodgey though. But if all items in the CS can be had by playing the game, then I really don't see what the problem is. A problem would be to have a subscription game in which you would have to buy cash shop items. Then it would be an utter rip-off.

I think there seems to be a confusion here between time sink and something that just takes time.  Something that takes time and is enjoyable is not the problem, time sinks are the real villians.

What turns an otherwise time waster into a grind fest is killing score after score of creatures in repetitious battle. Or those stupid quests that seem like they were sponsored by the marathon society. Not only are the tedious but the make you feel that you are working for UPS or something.

That is the problem with the recent crop of games. Not that they take time, after all no matter how you look at it, a game is a time waster.  What makes then suck is that they make you feel like you are wasting your time doing something you don't enjoy for a meager reward.

While sandbox games might be on life support, they are hardly dead.

Most people mention EVE, but there are others around in some surprizing places. EVE definatly is the most sandbox subscription game out there. But for those who have no pejudices againts F2P games, I would strongly encourage them to geive Voyage of the Century or better yet, Bounty Bay a try (they are essentially the same game run by diferent companies).

VOC/BB was open enough to me, a 3 year vetaran of EVE to really enjoy it and somewhat become addicted to it. Other then that, another game I don't think anyone mentioned was Runequest. True, I did not enjoy the game myself and the graphics are, for the lack of a better word, "challenged", but it's still pretty open ended.

I'm sure if we look around there are probably even more sandbox games out there. Some more flexible then others, and some more obvious then others for sure, but there are still a few there.

Personally I wish there were more out there since to me those are the most enjoyable games. If there are two things that I really hate in a game it's being forced to gring endlessly and being pigeonholed in certain path. Both things that most game these days seem to think they need to do in order to stay sucessfull.

I think probably the worst in that respect was CoH/CoV. Even though I really enjoyed those games I got tired of going to the forums and hear people almost demanding that certain builds needed certain powers. That really got ugly and I remember even having a intense argument with one such idiotic biggot who was proud of the fact that if he noticed a there was a tanker in his team that did not have stamina he would promptly kick him. And he was one of a whole horde of people who thoght it was their devine right to tell you how to build your character

Such kneejerks are a rare site in sandbox games, which is an added bonus all by itself.

My first MMO character was called Aihmlowst. He was a nanomage in the Anarchy Online closed beta. When the server was about to close and everything in it was about to be whipped, he threw himself on the floor and whined that he did not want to die. After a bit of this he got up and was about to voice his defiant protest, but it was too late…
The server had shut down and that was the last anyone heard from Aihm.

Ever since then I have played several other MMOs, and even though many may not agree, did quite a bit of RP. No, I never uttered a single “thee” or “shalt” or tried to speak in any form anachronism that people seem to relate to RP. I never used ((OoC)) talk either, and quite frankly the use of such conventions annoys the hell out of me. I have also never joined an official RP server. Though I feel I have always RPed in every game I ever played.

To me, RPing is basically trying to think what the character would think, and as much as humanly possible try to act like him or her and if possible utter some quip that reflects that and is humorous at times.

Such as having my Electric/Electric Blaster in CoH complain that her love life took a nose dive since no one can kiss her without getting zapped. Or my EVE pilot complaining that his cheap implants pick up random radio stations every once in a while. Or that when he sleeps, he dreams he’s some person in a backwards planet, locked in something called a cubicle that presses buttons all day long.

It’s also calling your alts your “little brother” or “younger sister”. Or like this other character I had in Flyff mentioned that when she “grew up” she wanted to be a mage. To me, that’s what RPing is all about.

It’s not about strict rules to be followed and a black list of taboo things that can’t be even hinted at. RP is about trying to see things though your character’s perspective, and I always have a blast when I do that.

Well, in the scenario I mentioned above, not only would you lose your ship, everything in it abd  all your implants but you would also potentialy lose months worth of training. It does not come any harsher then that.

Also keep in mind that even if your ship is insured you would still lose tons of money since  the insurance only barely covers the ships cost (if that) and not the modules which can cost several times more then your ship.

If you get podded you would lose all your implants which can also cost a small fortune, even in an updated clone and you would still need to buy a new clone.

So leave namby-pamby WoW behind and come play EVE for all your harsh punishments. It will put some hair on your chest.

If you really thing that death penalties are not harsh enough, I suggest you go play EVE.

Ride around in an un-insured ship and don't update your clone ever. First time you get podded you will either be in tears or depending on how masochistical you are, jumping with joy.

That sounds good, though I am not sure how active I might be on this game. It usually takes me a bit to commit to a game as that means that I have to drop another somewhere down the line.

The word is that the servers go live on the 15th, but I would go ahead and register now and claim your free gifts. They may become real useful.

As far as classes I'm still not sure. Either a brawler or maybe an archer. I'll just have to play around a bit and see which one I like best.
