Gotta roll my eyes originally when people cite hacking and proclaim it as "good". You can make a case that Anon has had a positive impact, but unfortunately there are outliers to their general "mission" - which comes from having no requirements to "entering the ranks".

This guy though? He isn't legion, he's just one. And he's just doing it for shits and giggles, not for any larger purpose.

There are 3-day buddy keys, which turn into five days if you complete a certain number of quests. 50? 30? I really don't remember.

I'm not going to say it's a flop, or not a flop. I'll simply say I thought it was a solid game with a better premise than most. Not great, but certainly one of the better themepark experiences around for my tastes.

With all that said.. I played my five days and decided it wasn't worth purchasing. While "good" by today's standards it still wasn't good enough for me to play it over random games in various genres, or continue to look for a "home". But your experience and opinion may vary.

i dont like skipping quests that might be hard, in fact the tougher the better. im talking about those that are genuinely impossible doesnt matter what gear you have, if youre the right level you cannot get through it. most of them give you decent loot for your level when you finish the chains, but if its impossible to solo, you dont get that gear you need, and are forced to find another way to level.

I'll assume trolling, but just in case...

If developers made it so anyone could solo all the quests, regardless of their skill, the difficulty would be extremely low. In fact, that's what has happened in most games out there. So, if you're doing a quest that is supposed to be soloable but you can't do it... you may just suck at the game.

Or you could just read the last portion of each link and take a wild guess at the general tone of those threads. You know, to save time.
I wouldn't mind an "Agree" button on posts. If nothing else it will be interesting to see how many people would "agree" on a post where the author claims to speak for the majority, compared to the person he or she is arguing against.

It's likely a mixture of both, but I would guess the majority are ESO fans. Again, only a guess. It seems like MMO players tend to move from game to game, whereas those who had little previous experience before playing ESO are likely experiencing the love of that first MMO. I envy that, gotta say.

Oh, and I'm not (at all) implying that ESO isn't a good enough game to keep experienced MMO gamers.

Here's a pathetic bit of honesty: I think I spent a longer period of time "breaking up" with my first MMO than I did getting over the first girl I legitimately loved. Haha! Then again.. if I could get a reasonably accurate version of her when she was the age we started dating it may be a completely different story.

... Everquest? Has it really changed into a quest-driven game? That IS an honest question, because I just can't imagine it.

The EQ I played only lead you from one zone to a choice of other zones based on level, and I still find the sparse questing amusing given the title of the game. Some of the quests (Shawl, epics) were amazing, but overall... not a quest-driven experience.

A game with no budget that is being developed by Brad McQuaid and a handful of amateur, volunteer developers. What could possibly go wrong?

Well that was the same setting that gave us EQ1.

This.

Except for the fact that EQ1 had paid staff, office space, a budget, and SOE behind it. Pantheon has none of those things.

Not at first it didn't. And Pantheon does have a few of these things.

Owning a copy of the movie "Office Space" isn't the same as having actual office space.

I'm certainly one of the people who goes out of my way to put a "warning" tag on anything he puts his name on. I was guardedly optimistic about Pantheon, because he has at least had games released in the past - despite whatever issues he may have. I'd say I was hopeful for the game itself, but cautious about trusting him running the show. I have one post here in a positive light for Pantheon, countered by several doom and gloom posts on the board of a game I cannot mention on these forums. Any project he's involved with now is indeed doomed. It isn't 1999. It isn't 2006.

If he's hired by a company to work on a project I would likely be guardedly optimistic again, since there would be others involved - some of them above him in the food chain. But getting that job opportunity is a challenge, based on his own mistakes.

After the Pantheon money issue things have changed. Nothing he does on his own, with his name out front, should be taken seriously. I do believe others should warn people and cite that, so they don't waste their money. If he can get investors, or enough people to donate after that? Great. No matter how many mistakes he makes he has the right to make a game, but it SHOULD be a more difficult road based on the speed bumps and detours he himself has created.

His games being accepted by the public should be just as difficult as Brad getting hired by a MMO developer. That's really the bottom line for me. He shouldn't get a free pass just because his ideas are a bit less of a rehash than what we usually get, or because he was involved in making a good game and a decent one that could have been good.

Hey, maybe he can be in Iron Man 4.

How about Ridiculouspolls.net?

Yes which makes no sense that I am suddenly befriending the Queen of the AD who is my mortal enemy...

The whole vet concept of doing the other zones was obviously just tacked on at the end of development and it shows.  If I want to experience the other 2 areas I'll make a character there.  The whole setup screams of a desperate last minute decision by the developers when they realized the content would only hold people for a few weeks.

The whole point of this change was in regard to the massive complaints about not being able to see it all on one character. It was not a smart change by any means, the same goes for the change to the starter areas. It's a pretty good lesson on not caving to every complaint your audience makes.

The added content was nothing but a bonus for Zenimax at least at the time. We see now though that it didn't make much difference in long term appeal.

Exactly my feelings on the starter zones and VR content. This latest change, instead of adding faction-specific content for VR levels - which they could do a couple levels at a time over 6 months and still make me happy - is seriously making me consider uninstalling the game and forgetting about it. I haven't subscribed since the first 43-day period ended (early access, free apology time) but I'd been waiting for Thieves Guild and/or Dark Brotherhood to give it another try. Not so sure I'm interested now. Not that it matters, I'm just one person. Just venting!

I never found the veteran content difficult. By comparison I suppose it was, but I only died a few times per VR level. Not a big deal, given there's no real penalty for death. I'm happy they realized it needed a change, just not a fan of the one they came up with. Poor comparison, but it's like saying I don't like Peach Tea and having someone say "how about just half a cup then, so you can get through it faster?".

I'm not a fan of when people throw a years number out there as an attempt to lend merit to their argument. I agree with the OP on that. Unless clearly stated like that I tend to brush it off as simply throwing the number on the table, and nothing more.

I do, however, wish it was listed on the left pane under our avatars. It's useful. When I'm replying to someone who has been playing for three years I'm less likely to cite EQ as an example, or World of Warcraft, or even the first Guild Wars. There's no point in citing examples that person isn't as likely to understand as more recent ones. In a very subjective debate, like opinions on MMOs, our opinions serve as the crutches to most of our points. We have population, subscriber, and longevity data.. but not a lot of other concrete figures to work with. Only our personal experiences.

Everyone seems to jump the gun around here. Even if you hate ESO, and think it is the worst MMO ever made - neither of which are true for me - wouldn't you want them to release the rest of their core content first? It would be better for them to release Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood into the game you hate, so they can see what kind of tweaks they need to make, than to just shut it down now and retool. Citing poor design of the overall concept should mean you have little confidence in them doing things right the first time with those two big features.

Of course that would be assuming there was a chance ZOS was considering rebooting the game in the first place - which I don't think is true, despite my disappointment with the game.

Generally "end game" is raid content, although not everyone cares about raiding. I still believe EverQuest was the best when it comes to that, but is obviously dated now. Kunark was good, Velious was amazing, and I enjoyed POP flagging. Can't say much after those, aside from Discord was a disaster.

For me, raiding is pointless now. Most raiding guilds want you to talk to them in vent, something I reaaaally don't want to do - I have a hard enough time putting up with some people on-screen, I don't need to add voices to annoy me further.

My end-game at this point in life is different. Content requiring a couple groups is large enough for me, and I find myself gravitating to 3-4 person encounters that are designed for full groups. I find challenges in different ways, rather than raids.

As for what raiding SHOULD be? I'm not sure the content itself is the most important part. Just make it a little challenging, and try to develop encounters where skill matters over numbers. Raiding is mostly about the guild you're in, though. Some of my fondest raid moments were with good people who may not have been the best players. Wiping a few times, even if you don't win that go-around, can be more fun than crushing a raid boss with a group of skilled players who are more prone to prickish behavior.

Edit to add: I think longevity is a problem because there are too many options. When the genre was in its infancy most players either loved the game they were playing, or had already tried the few other options and decided their game was the best fit - even if they didn't love it. Options are good, but they can also water things down.

I don't need any customization. What I want is body and facial scans, so I can play as myself - except a lot better at combat, magic, crafting.. and everything else. I may dress better than any of my characters, though.

Yeah, I tend to agree with the OP - but I also think that sometimes when this is done the heart of the people doing it is in the right place, just that their actions do nothing but point out differences.

Not on the original DA (or even gay/straight) point, but take Facebook for example. That story about the 50 gender options was incredibly ridiculous. Here's an idea! Remove the gender radio buttons entirely - and either let people form their own opinions based on picture and/or orientation (not recommended) or.. and this is crazy... TALK TO THE PERSON! But apparently that idea, much like a quality MMO, is a thing of the past. I just always found the whole thing odd. I have guy friends, chick friends, lesbian chick friends, gay male friends.. I never introduce them as "This is my lesbian friend Kelsey who identifies as female". Then again, she'd laugh if I did.. and some people are apparently annoyed to be labeled as "female". But like I said, somewhat besides the point.

As far as gay/straight in the media goes.. there are times where I understand it, like the NFL Draft this year (because of the perceived alpha male locker rooms, even though I think it went way overboard attention-wise) and times where it serves no purpose to point it out, such as this one. "Hey, these pixels forming a guy like these other pixels forming a guy!"

We used to have higher standards than most groups.

I actually agree with mostly everything in your post, even if I felt it was a bit over the top. This part stuck out for me, though.

I played Atari when I was little. Gaming in itself was innovative, but the games themselves were not. Choplifter, Space Invaders, Pole Position, Stampede... was that demanding more? Was that a high standard? Not at all, we were just happy to be playing games.

The industry has come a very, very long way. Look at Super Nintendo titles of the early 90's, compared to games 20 years later. Sure, Final Fantasy III and ChronoTrigger might be more enjoyable.. but from a technological standpoint? From an interaction standpoint? Leaps and bounds man.

I think MMOs in particular have stagnated a bit over the past six or seven years in terms of overall concept, but we're still seeing minor innovation inside that narrow concept. Proving small things like adding difficulty into MMOs again can be profitable? That's a huge step in the right direction. Just because it's in a game I don't like doesn't reduce the potential impact. Who knows? Maybe ESO's Thieves Guild will be another implementation that catches on. Maybe EQNext's voxel-based world catches on. All these things can fit into those "high standards", which really just means you want a game marketed to your style to come along. A game that's exactly what YOU think it should be.

World of Darkness was that future hope off in the distance for me.

The only mmorpgs that offer anything for such fans are pure garbage.  Nothing decent has been released.  I'm obviously biased here, but I believe there's a large market, at least a large niche market, for such games.

Yeah, VTM has long been the only vampire-based MMO theme I had any interest in. Everything regarding clans, skills, and attributes is already so spelled out for a developer, not that they're the biggest challenge in developing a game.. but still!

The dream of Vampire: The Masquerade as an MMO title is beginning to seem as much a pipe dream as a large-scale multiplayer (not necessarily MMO) zombie survival game that focuses on the elements I enjoy, rather than being.. well... DayZ.

SOE is hoping to bring in a wide audience to EQN for max profit. It will be an ultra casual game, most likely not even a true MMORPG like EQ1 and 2.

I expect EQN to be a massive disappointment to EQ fans.

Take out the word massive and I agree. Those who have unrealistic expectations will be massively disappointed, though. Anyone who is hoping for EQ pre-2004 (when it died IMO) with graphics brought up to date, mechanics sped up, and cool new shit thrown in is going to be extremely sad when they get a chance to play the game. That won't happen.

A more reasonable hope is that we get an MMO that has some EQ elements thrown in, enough to make it feel a little like that game we used to love. Difficulty. Death penalties. Group-centric for most classes. Exploration that matters.

It's important to note that most of what the game will be is far from set in stone. The success of other MMO's between now and then will influence the direction EQN takes some things. I know you and I barely care (and not in a positive way) about Wildstar, DM, but it it keeps a bunch more subs than expected we could see the market realize that everything doesn't have to be Novice-mode 1988 Nintendo difficulty.

There's some hope if they set things up with ruleset servers. Keeps the PVPers, PVE'ers, and roleplay guys reasonably happy and out of each other's way. Haven't read anything about this being the case or not, so I apologize if I missed it.

As a quick summary of my thoughts.. I'm just not hoping for the best MMO ever. I've been beaten down past that point by what's been released in the past decade. I'm just hoping for something between WoW-style and the EverQuest I used to love. And I'm sure, despite trying to be reasonable, I'll be a little disappointed.

Factor in 2.3 release in 3 weeks, meaning players buying during the sale will get to experience that update as well (Ninja and Rogue being released)

Well actually rogue/ninja isn't coming out in 2.3 it's coming out in 2.4.

But 2.3 is still out July 8th?

Guess it is a 6 week wait for NIN/ROG then

The sad part is 2.4 comes out 3 months after 2.3. :(

I think the 2.4 patch will be a draw for players to return, but they don't need to purchase a box. Just re-sub. I'm generally very hesitant and picky, so I'm guessing most people who aren't me that kept tabs on FFXIV have either removed it from consideration or purchased it by now. The deal on Steam didn't reach the top 100 sellers list from what I saw, although I admittedly didn't check until late last night.

I don't think the game really needs the help - my original post may have come off as a ARR-hater. I'm certainly not that. I spent a couple hours (while doing other things) considering it, but ultimately decided it wasn't the right time for me. I just keep having other games higher on my priority list - none of which are MMOs currently. Maybe the winter sale.
