I think this is part of the reason I can't seem to get into DDO (which I'd like to play since it is free) and guild wars. The world is all instance based and there is little to no reason to party (at least that I have ever found). In FFXI it was great to have everyone in the same zone (less the auction houses in Lower Jeuno or Whitegate).

I mean you are walking through the highlands and you see a buddy of yours killing sheep.

You are like "Yo" (I'm from Philly alright ... we say yo)
Then they are like "Hey there"
Then you are like "Whatcha upta?" (seriously it is how we talk)
Then they are like "Just farming some sheep skins"
Then you are like "coo 'got some time nea'and"
Then they are like "What the fuck you just say?"
Then you are like "ah sry neta stop typin Philly ... Translation: Cool I have some time before I need to be where I am going would you like a hand with your endeavors this evening?"
Then they are like "Yeah sure the more the merrier"
Then BOOM bonding ... increased friendship ... increased karma ... increased wallet since you are pocking the crap they don't need 

You just don't get that in an instanced based game.
