Im fine with it, hopefully the other aspects of the game are good or it won't even matter.

As an above poster said ... Eq2 came out just before WoW. There was no contest even after just 6 months. I played EQ2 first myself and left to play WoW. Both were good games but I felt WoW was more fun and played it instead. You would be correct though, if the game that comes out first can hold it's player base from trying the rest of the games coming out ... it may have a better shot.

Why?

If you just read everything I just wrote and it didn't hit home in one tiny way or another, then I don't know what else I can say to make you see why this means so much.

I'm just like everyone here, I love to game.

People have stressful lives, jobs, etc and people enjoy gaming just to forget about RL just for a bit.

Lets just forget about all the ways SoE/LA screwed the game, again, don't you care that there are people out there trying to make a difference for others?  Yes, its a game, I know this.  Our government screws us over each and every day with decisions that they think are best for us and you know as I said before, it hasn't benefitted me at all with any decision they have EVER made.  These guys at SoE and Lucas, we all know for them its all about killing SWG to make room for ToR.  If they had brains, they would have known that people playing SWG would have least tried the game or even played it right alongside ToR.   This is all about money.  The two games could have co-existed with each other.

This is a David and Goliath story.  End of.

Sure, they could co exist but it's a waste of resources. Not to mention the added benefit of any part of SWG's old population going to TOR and helping it grow. And you said it yourself, it's about the money. It's about the bottom line and there is no room for SWG anymore.

I think it's still popular by a mile. But I don't prefer it what so ever. I feel it kills community and friendships rather than build them. Bicker about loot, bicker about who goes and who doesn't, bicker about who is performing and who is not, and there is always 1 guy ... most people can't stand but he remains in the guild just the same irritating the shit out of people on raids. And let's face it, there is always a core group of people, you either go along for the ride or GTFO. To top it off, running a raid for 2 straight months or more is rediculous. I've been part of some pretty decent raid guilds but it's always the same song and dance ...

Autowalk-function. And I don't mean you press a button and walk in a straightline. I mean the function where you press a button, and your character walks automatically to the next quest. I tried an MMORPG with that function once, and can't imagine ever doing that again. In most themepark MMORPGs it's anyway just one direction: forward. Left and right you got walls, and from behind you came. Why is that too complicated for some people?

Lack of classes or starting zones. I want replayability. When a game has a class and faction system, then I want a dozen classes and starting zones. If it's like in AOC (1 starting zone) or Rift (2 starting zones, 4 classes) I get bored almost instantly since the game forces me to go through the content over and over.

Dungeon finder. Nothing as horrible as meeting up with random people, maybe even from another server, who behave like greedy "$"%& because they know that something like a reputation doesn't exist, with the dungeon finder, and you will most likely never meet them again.

Extreme instant travel. When there is no need to cross the landscape anymore, there is no need anymore for the landscape either. Extreme fast travel empties the game and kills immersion.

That's what bothers me most about current MMO's, is reputation ... it means jack. A person can be a total schmuck and it doesnt matter at all. A person can get more by being a total sh it bag. Not only do unscroupulous people thrive in MMO's, they're guilds do as well. Black lists do not exist anymore ....

Instant travel? Exploring used to be fun, it used to take time ... I used to meet new people and we would converse. Now it's a rat race to the next destination.

#4: People who refuse to even respond, let alone group up, when working on the same quest.

I hate that with a passion as well.

yeah, especially when you've been in the area waiting on a spawn.  THen some d ouche comes up , wont take your invite , kills it , laughs then runs away. :/

1) Crap interface

2) Crap graphics

3) too many loading screens

4) Crap character models

5) The yellow brick road ( yeah you know what I mean)

6) Sh it community

I could get around graphics for a good game, but it's almost impossible to get around a horrible interface ... most of the time Ill just log out and delete.

Played WoW for the better part of 6 years. Raided some of the hardest content, however rep grinds and dailies were nothing more than work for me. Im lazy some would say. I just don't care to partake in what I consider a job in a game I'm supposed to be having fun. Effort is one thing, work is another. In SWG I loved running faction missions, It would seem tehy werent much differnt than a daily ... but I liked them. WoW's dailies just felt mind numbingly boring and unfun.

My fiance talked me into trying to play again, a week in I deleted a few 85's, my 80's and all the rest of my characters I had. Every class was over 70 but I no longer want to play that game again. 6 years though, can't say I didn't have soem good times. And hell, after 6 years what would one expect ... of course Im bored. Time to move on permanently ...

It's been like that for the most part for a long time now. Over the past year though, everything else I used to do ... PvP, crafting, rep grinds, and gathering became boring as hell. For me, PvP sucks and has for a long time now, crafting was only as good as hitting cap to help the guild for me as well, and rep grinds? ( never did them unless it was in the course of my normal gameplay)

I've subbed on and off for the past 6 or so months, only to quit about a week or 2 in each time. Had several 85's, multiple 80's and every class was over 70 ... deleted them all. Id rather just sit and wait at this point or play something on xbox 360 than play a game that has became increasingly boring for me. 6 years though, what would I expect, lol.

It was alright, It did some things right that I liked and they seem to listen to the player base on different issues and act fast. However after all the leveling and rifting, it just felt like the same old game with a different skin ... not enough to keep me interested. Tired of the same games .... I played this game with a different skin 6 years ago .... now it's just old and boring. Like I said in my opening sentence though, nothing wrong with this game if that's what your looking for.

IMHO Locust Arts will never be able to give SWs fans what they really want in a SW featured MMO game until they make one with a heavily FPS inspired combat system that lends itself to those heroic and chaotic epic battles we all loved in the SW movies..

Im not saying TOR wont be a fun game its just my own personal opinion whats wrong with SW games in general not a hate or troll post...

You are probably right, 1 guy runs into a room, rolls around on the ground , kills 10 guys and walks out unscathed. I get what you are saying though ... I could personally do without any fps myself though ...

The question that needs to be answered by the people that are about to go and walk in front of a bus over this is,  Does SWG and the small amount of people playing it, do the IP justice anymore? My personal answer would be, It never did at any point in it's whole lifespan. I have a real good feeling LA's didn't think so as well.

As much as I liked it it pre Cu, you are probably correct. It was realeased too early and had SO many bugs. My constant complaint during pre CU was the constant push of content and ignoring bugs that needed to be fixed. Even now the game seems like a buggy version of WoW with a Star Wars skin. Sure it still has features that WoW doesnt, but it's taken alot of the good parts out and put the parts in that lead you along like a carrot on a stick.

Again there would have been no harm in SOE waiting to see if the numbers did in fact drop after the 45 days. If they announced the closure at the end of Sep for closure in Dec 15th, I would not feel more shafted, as 2 months notice came with the Matrix, so that timeframe would have been expected.

Now that the game has been announced to  close, people are struggling to find reason to log in. Hence the reason why they do not announce it much sooner.

SOE are now losing more money by giving this much notice

People may not be paying, but no one knows they would not until the time had elapsed. I did not put payment details back into my accounts until I could no longer log in. I still want to play so resubbed.

No company, especially SOE, are generous enough to let people know about a game closure for this much timeframe, they would still keep taking peoples money, as people think game is ongoing, and have the right to. SOE are now going to lose out on about 2 months worth of subs.

The fact they did it now, when SWG was on a high, means that it was NOT population.

You have to give up on the fact the game was dead - It was better than Aion, Warhammer, City of Heroes, Star Trek Onlin and loads of other MMOS, except 4 of them

Your entire argument is based on two very large assumptions that almost no one agrees with.

  1. That SWG in its current form was able to generate enough money to justify the cost of operation and renewing the license and that after 8 years it could somehow still be "saved".
  2. That the game was somehow "healthy", because a bunch of freeloaders were touring the game with 45 free days and that somehow this time the free players might possibly decide to subscribe.

You completely overlook the fact that SOE/LA have been trying to save this game for 8 years now and nothing has worked.  Simply put SOE/LA have already tried everything you think is now possible.  This isn't the first time SWG has been in this situation.  Be glad it lasted this long and that both companies put this much effort into this crippled game.

Just accept that both companies have already tried to save the game and run it long past the point most other companies would have closed it down.  It doesn't need another year to "see what happens", because this situation isn't new.  SOE/LA have seen it all before and they know the final outcome.  The free time would end and people would leave again, just like they have in the past.

Six months notice was a gift.  Consider that your extra time instead of them just closing the doors in two months.  Enjoy.

I am not basing my arguments on those 2 assumptions at all

It is just stupid to begin to close game now on account of populations, for 6 months notice, when 2-3 months would have been ample

If it was down to populations, and were doing it now regardless of the 45 days "populatuion boom", then it would be closing in Sept instead.

The 6 months notice is more of a curse than a gift,. There are hardly anybody in game and as far as SOE goes, they are losing money from people seeing no point in paying. Not usually SWGs style. Even when they closed the servers back on Oct 15th they only gave one months notice, when was expecting about 3.

Even I, with this notice I may not sub all the usual accounts now as I would have done, Ill just sub my main few, and save the money for the last hoorah on Sept 15th where I can get as many as I can on.

No matter which way you try  to spin it, you are wrong

Maybe they decided to do something right for a change and give people a heads up instead of milking and scamming them for extra money. Given the reputation, I would have expected them to give a 1 week notice and just spring the close out event and anouncement at the same time and say thanks for the cash .....

Bad idea as youve heard from above people. And the fact that you havent heard of a game , especially this game doesnt make them unreputable people ... in this case it just makes you unaware. And even if they were unreputable people, the last thing you want to do with people like that over the internet is spark a response especially when you are trying to commit fraud.

See, it's something that formed in my mind while I played Rift about 3 months or so. There suddenly is a new sort of peer pressure. NOW MAGE YOU MUST SWAP TO HEALER!

What? Did you talk to me? DID YOU TALK TO ME?

I mean, really. If I wanted to play a healer... I would have frigging rolled one! I rolled a Rogue in Rift, and suddenly all sort of folks wanted me to Bard heal or even to tank! And I said. No. End of story. I rolled a Rogue because I wanted to play DMG dealer. I didn't want to be heal bot or spank tank. And suddenly ALL SORTS of bitching and aggression arises because people endlessly talk to you why you don't do this and that and I have to play to the conformity and decisions of OTHERS. Yes, we are being told in games like GW2 and TOR and whatnot, that this is the new freedom. You don't need a healer. (Did you notice both have no healer classes? I think that sucks! Nothing beats a REAL healer, someone who plays healer ALL THE TIME and not "oh wait, I never did that role before... let me try... WHOOPSY DAISY we all wiped again...)

A friend of mine in Rift was playing Warrior class, and she gathered all good tanking gear and no dmg gear, because in Rift you have to chose what loot/reward you want. So there she was in some Raid, and the leaders just decided that some other warriors would tank and she was commanded to go to DMG spec. Only she had only tank gear, because you can only have good gear or ONE. And that's where the ridiculousness starts, because other people start shoving your around like you were their chess pieces. You make this and you that... just because we all can now be everything. Huzzah. But do we WANT to be everything? Well, I don't.

I LIKE THE TRINITY. There, I said it. I like clearly defined roles, and IMVPO a team with clearly defined roles where people NOT swap their roles ever so often but guys are experienced with THEIR JOB, will always beat a gathering of jack-of-all-trades! Where does this stupid "Ohhh I don't want to be confined into one role" whining come from? Well, cry me a river, life IS about CHOICES! Whats to difficult today to just make a frigging choice like a man should and then blasted STICKING with it!? NOOO we don't want to choose, we want always to be anything... Bah.

And where is my identity in this? Where is the pride to be a REALLY good healer? Or a REALLY good Rogue? And not something of everything as my constantly swinging mood commands? Or rather as others bully me to do as they feel convenient?!

I don't like yer modern whippersnapper jackoalltrade weirdo MMOs! Now get off me lawn! XD

/rant off

Easy fix, switch and let your party die. Then tell them "that's why I dps"

At one point SWG had over a million active back when it was a sandbox game, and that number actually grew from there (hazily recollecting 5 million cited somewhere, sometime, but not sure about that figure at all). Bioware announced that the game was not going to be a sand box and that leaves a lot of pissy people upset about the idea that SWTOR won't be SWG the prequel .

On top of that, as others have mentioned, there is some concern that the game play will be too close to WoW and that the game will be WoW with a Star Wars skin. Also, the twitch-based and FPS crew want a game that caters to reflexes and button mashing as opposed to strategically using skills on a toolbar (me, biased, no way :p).

I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are the ones I know. They don't make much sense to me, but I suppose their important enough for others to rant over.

If they ever had that many, there would never have been a CU or NGE, lol. I'm pretty sure you meant boxes sold though .... I hope.

GW2 8

TOR 8

Archeage 7

Not sure how excited I really am, I'm getting tired and bored of MMO's lately. After another sub to WoW a 3rd in the past 7 months or so and quitting a week in every time ..... I deleted every character I had. 70+ of every class, mostly 80's and 85's. I'm done unless I reroll I guess, lol.

Awesome idea.

I think a lot has to do with people tired of the same old model of MMO. Lack of vision and not really breaking away from the mold. Those who do not mind another WoW esq game will be more than happy.  Ill give it a shot myself but that's where alot of people are coming from. But I like Bioware, I like Star Wars ... should be a decent game and I'll see what they do with it.

I might not fully understand this, but what I understand is something about a monocle, and it's making players leave.

To me it seems a bit too dramatic to leave a game because of a monocle. C'mon, folks, it's a monocle. You don't have to buy it or anything else that they are selling for real life money. I don't quite understand the big fuzz about this monocle, and I'm not sure I ever will, but I still think people should calm down. There's no reason to leave a game you like, just because they sell a monocle.

It's the principle of the situation smokey.

But yeah on a serious note, principle. I think most of us bought these games expecting everything to do with that game to be included in said subscription. The more people give, the more they push. Most people don't have principle and most people just let what's going to happen whether it's right or not until it really does effect them ...by then it's too late.

Monocle today, who knows what tomorrow. Nothing like spending your subscription dollar to have them create an item you have to pay extra for ....
