Now if we only could get more WwW maps. Wasn't the plan to make each of the borderlands different?

CCP has a way of making great visions and trailers...
... which they never realize. |

At the same time, the sales of custom built gaming PCs and components continues to increase year after year. Might take a short dip when the new consoles come out, but probably will start increasing in a couple of years again. All the declining PC sales tell us is that people are using alternate methods for their everyday surfing needs and office work. PC gaming is still growing and I don't think it's going away anytime soon.

Minecraft is a helluva lot more MMO than 90% of the lobby crap that's on this site. Just because you've never played Minecraft on a 500 player RPG server doesn't mean it's not capable of that.

Camelot Unchained: Kickstarter Campaign Begins
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 4/02/13 12:51:24 PM
Well this is one project I will not back up, because it's all talk and no show at this point. Having great ideas is good and all, but more important (and more difficult) is to have the team to make it happen.

Honestly, disgusted with the testing monetization

Originally posted by ringdany I think MJ has a lot of good ideas. Unfortunately it seems they have jack to show about this project at this point. Execution is completely unknown as of yet. That's the reason I'm not putting my money down unless they have something to show when the KS launches.

Camelot Unchained: Graphics, Gameplay & Performance - Speed Matters
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/20/13 3:10:40 AM
For a game that's supposed to be around for years, it's always smarter to go for a strong, distinctive style than photorealism. "Realistic" graphics age much faster. Look at WoW. Lots of players criticized it's cartoony style, but let's be honest how many realistic looking games from 2005 still look good today? |

[Preview] Elder Scrolls Online: First-Person, Exploring, and the Nightblade

First person and full world exploration? Well this game might have some hope after all... |

I guess this will be quite taxing on your hardware. Time to crank up the OC on my CPU and GPU...

Looks ok enough to me, although animations will decide a lot. Also, would like to see some shots with bright lighting on (with all the shadows and "blooms"). |

A Diffrent way of thinking about an mmo, have no levels

Originally posted by Squeak69 Indeed. There is only a handful of games that have adequate roleplaying tools available to players (UO is one, LotrO is another). The rest of them have no tools for roleplaying or building an in-game community. Ironically, even WoW has more roleplaying tools than most games that have come out in the recent years. And I think the reason most people don't roleplay is because they have not tried it and their prejudices are telling them it's about cybering and dressing funny.

Originally posted by Ezhae There is nothing that would prevent a game like UO to be created for mobile devices. The game was originally designed for '97 PCs running at 640x480 SVGA resolution. Modern tablets have many times the processing power, memory capacity and screen resolution compared to the PCs of '97. The reason we don't see AAA MMOs on tablets yet is because someone has yet to prove that a big budget game for a tablet can be successful.

To be fair, a game like classic UO could easily be run as a facebook game. I would play it for sure and even pay for it.

A Diffrent way of thinking about an mmo, have no levels

Originally posted by Icewhite To be fair, both GURPS and CoC both have very little in practical character progression. Every game session you're lucky to get 4-5 points in GURPS and 3-10% in skills in CoC. Given how lethal both game systems are, most characters will never advance that much before dying. But as said in this thread already. Mass market today requires instant gratification and fast leveling. And I cannot blame them, as leveling and stat/gear progression is pretty much all there is to modern MMOs. If you think about Ultima Online, it wasn't much of a chore to max out your character's skills and stats, but still people kept playing because there was so much to do and the game offered great tools for actual roleplaying. Making your own events, waging your own wars, building a village of player owned homes, etc. All that has been reduced to level to max, raid for gear, wait for next content patch, rinse and repeat.

Originally posted by Loktofeit Unfortunately in most "RPGs" today the leveling itself is the only reward you get, and perhaps the ability to see more of the world. As he said, the power gain is just an illusion, as the monsters become tougher too and in many cases, you're fighting the same enemy model in the later levels, with only higher stats. |
