Of the people who have tried WoW, less than 10% have stuck with the game.

So I'd say it's not as easy as some might think.

a) where do you get this number

b) define "tried" wow.  Is this counting Free Trials?  If so, that's significantly different from those who buy the game.

I think they're referring to a 3-4 year old quote from a WoW dev, talking about the need to improve their starting game.  If so, yes, the dev was referring to free trials.

The Quote origionally was of the people who try the game only 10% get past level 10, which is the break even point to where most people continue playing the game and subscribe is past level 10.

the quote was about free trials - and it wasnt 10% , heres a source

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98245-Only-30-Percent-of-WoW-Players-Get-Past-Level-10

Our research shows that trial players who play World of Warcraft past level ten are much more likely to stick with the game for a long time," Morhaime said during Activision Blizzard's year-end financial call. "Currently, only about 30 percent of our trial players make it past this threshold. So anything we can do to improve the new player experience is a huge opportunity for us."

wow loses 10% of its subs -- its a loss but its not failing

mentioning that it could continue to 50% is needless

Morhaime on the topic

http://www.vg247.com/2011/11/08/activision-blizzard-q3-digital-revenue-up-25-ytd/

World of Warcraft subscriptions also took a hit, dropping by around 800,000 to 10.3 million. Morhaime said most of the losses were in “the East”, but said World of Warcraft remains the most popular online game in China and the most popular subscription MMO in the world.

On the game’s future, Morhaime said the team is “looking forward to” World of Warcraft’s Brazilian launch, and said Blizzard has “other aggressive marketing plans” in addition to the Online Pass, but is not ready to share details.

2. "The good news is that the company has whooped expectations by nearly tripling its profit for the quarter over this time last year. During this past quarter, Activision Blizzard raked in $627 million worth of sales, of which $148 million is pure profit. A majority of the revenue -- 62% -- comes from its digital sales." (from Massively)

Even when Blizzard fails, they still make Scrooge McDuck money. It's got to piss the competition with their "better mmos" off. It's as simple as 1, 2, 3.

thats not blizzard tripling profits  -- thats ALL Activision games

Call of Duty is not Blizzard

Activision's Warcraft loses steam, Call of duty shines

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/09/us-activisionblizzard-idUSTRE7A77GP20111109

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/325540/activision-profits-almost-triple-in-q3/

Over half of sales ($427 million) were generated from digital channels, Edge reports. Call of Duty: Black Ops was the top-selling console game in the US and Europe for the nine months to the end of September, while consumers have now bought 20 million Black Ops map packs.

Activision also said it expects premium Call of Duty Elite subscribers to hit one million by the end of 2011, and confirmed a new Call of Duty game for 2012.

You do understand that the majority of their losses are from asia right?

Could that be because they just managed to release WotLK there?  I understand there was a big issue with it, but I have not heard anything about thier losses being primarily from Asia.

Hmmm....Massivley are saying they have lost 1.1 million players but tripled profits. What in satans portion is going on here? ;) http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/activision-blizzard-loses-1-1-million-wow-players-triples-profi/

the triple profits is regarding all games of Activision -- not just blizzard

http://www.rttnews.com/Content/TopStories.aspx?Node=B1&Id=1755791

Activision Publishing's Call of Duty: Black Ops has been the #1 best-selling title in dollars in aggregate across all platforms in the U.S. and Europe for each of the first three quarters of 2011.

As for me, I think I might get the game, but I can understand some of the cringes a critic might have when a GW2 superfan touts:

“Guild Wars 2 will cater to you support types! You will love it because it is strategically unique and proactive!  But uh... you won't technically be supporting more than anyone else.  Why would you want to anyway?! Healing is boring!  And no one actually likes playing heal-bar whac-a-mole!"

I think the part in orange is incorrect and that that's where your issue is.

gw2 wiki also discusses the support role -- and its mostly about helping others, not yourself

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Support

you still have to pick your 10 skills

yes players have the options to be different flavors of Control, Damage, Support

but you wont have access to all your skills at once

look at your thread title Op:

I think GW2 will be a WoW clone or cookie-cutter MMO

will be is -not- might be

this may also help

I started playing some Might and Magic Heroes VI

I think my own opinion if I do start again the low levels the possibility of grouping will be what draws me to a server and in that case that will be the EQ2X but since I want to craft too the resource gathering will be crowded in EQ2X and that means I might just go to AB instead since the monthly sub has never been a consideration in every freemium game I always sub might as well go live. Why the hell will it not let me space my paragraphs ?

offtopic but ive been having fun w HOMM6 too

I never found any issues with EQ2X resource gathering under level 50 (I didnt tradeskill beyond 50)

as mentioned earlier, all servers will be seeing many beastlords once the expansion hits

should hopefully be more details tomorrow (tuesday)  for price and release date

I try not to hold a bias and while SOE leaves me with mixed feelings, I like their game EQ2

everyone should try it

the EQ2Live trial will let you try all races/classes with no fees

http://www.everquest2.com/choose_your_path/

may be pleasantly surprised

the game has seen *many* changes since launch

clarifier: freeblood (vampire race) is a cashshop only race

annoying but thats SOE sometimes heh

if you like pvp, live servers are better

- cross server battlegrounds

- pvp server, Nagafen

EQ2X has some BG pvp in the 30-39 level bracket but its limited to its own server

AC1 killed AC2, indirectly.

I don't think any MMO, including SWTOR, has or will kill off another MMO by stealing players from it. But I think a few have died because they failed to live up to expectations set by a prequel or similiar type of game. AC2 was an okay game, but it did very little like AC1, this difference and the fact that most AC1 players weren't interested in it, helped to kill it off.

agree i dont count SWTOR --  SWTOR hasnt even launched yet

the ip contract was up and both SOE and LucasArts agreed not to renew

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/exclusive-smedley-on-the-sunsetting-of-star-wars-galaxies/

if the ip contract was not up - swg may have still been around

So many reasons these days. Pick any...  To lvl slow and enjoy the game puts you at a disadvantage.

It seems like a game design issue. ( WOW and it's ME ME ME mentality comes to mind. Personal progression over everything else in a competition with everyone else.)

leveling slow does not put you at a disadvantage  (except for pvp)

theres always other players who are slower or new players who have not even started playing the game yet

the only time I saw the "go go go" mentality in WOW, was in the dungeon finder groups

As for pricing Eq2X is the better deal too because unlike live you don't have to buy a Box Copy of the game to play.

EQ2Live does not need the box -- only need to subscribe from the trial

http://eq2wire.com/2011/08/25/everquest-ii-launches-free-14-day-trial/

Unlike those past trials, this one is a full 14 days and allows starting in any of the four current starting cities, as well as providing players access to every expansion except Destiny of Velious.

EQ2Live is as cheap as 10.00 a month if you pay for a year in advance

http://www.soe.com/gamepass/

both services have benefits

but theres no question that EQ2Live is cheaper for subscribers with its multimonth discounts

Gold membership is identical to eq2 live monthly except you dont have access to all the races, which are unlocked for 7.50 per set of four (if you wait for double station cash days you can unlock em all for $15)

agree - racepacks are 7.50 for set of 3

you can unlock them all for 30.00 (or 15.00 w x2 SC)

personally, I'm a gold member whos raids 90 content on EQ2X and I'm aware of the advantages the Live servers offer

both AB and Crushbone are popular live servers

- not as many low level players as EQ2X but not dead either

Age of Discovery is launching w a new class in the next 3-5 weeks

some players will powerlevel it but all live servers will see increased low level activity

I think both services offer value -- altho live server are more financially economical

should be noted that on EQ2X  paying one time fee of 10.00

Silver can use chat, expert spells,  buy from broker

since Game update 61 (august)

treasured gear under level 85 is almost as good as legendary .. gear is no issue at all for leveling

The genre wasn't very popular, it was more cyber cafe games like fps. But obviously mmo fit so much more a very weaved internet than fps that trigger more cyber cafee needs. And last from all the other mmo from that generation is so obvious WOW was the easiest mmo, mmo are "complicated" games compared to the solo and coop games,

you also overlooked brandname -- BLIZZARD

Blizzard already had MILLIONS of fans from Diablo / Warcraft / Starcraft series

Diablo2  (2000) was hugely popular with more than 1 million units sold in the first two weeks of availability

success of WOW was also growing the brandname, among all the other reasons

you cant sell a game on your name alone but a huge fanbase more than helps - something no other mmo had
