Well so far 60 views and no replies.

Either I've:

A) Stumped them

B) P*ssed them off so much they dare not reply

C) The thread is already locked lol

D) No one has bothered to read the whole thing!

Honestly, I try to make sense of the argument from many different perspectives, all while trying to remain objective...

It's hard to be objective when it comes to gankers/griefers because I honestly see no reason to do so except for a complete lack of courage and true skill.

So I just posted this:

http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?p=1181950#post1181950

On the official Darkfall community forums.

It's a cleaned up-a-bit version of a blog post I did here.

I really want to see what the Darkfall community says.

So I'm going to make a poll for you DF fans/haters here:

I know with the Chosen and Black Orc (tank classes) you will be able to "spec" your character with Tactics and such that will allow you to take a more offensive role, (i.e. damage dealer) and use two-handed weapons instead of just shields etc.

I'm sure it's the same with the KotBS

If Darkfall ever is released a polished game the community will kill it.

Read my blog if you want the Truth about FFA PvP.

The Darkfall community is a passionate one, and with no actual game to play yet, all they have is the forums. It's completely understandable. The forum wars are examples of classic psychological defense mechanisms.

Unfortunately, I also see a great many of the Darkfall community on this site that are unable to see but a few inches past their own noses.

The concept of perspective seems lost.

Yeah, perfect is all relative in the eye of the beholder.

For me the perfect game has PVP with meaningful player objectives to create, defend and destroy.  LotRO won't ever have that, so it can't ever be perfect for me.

Still a nice, well run game though, and for those who enjoy what it delivers, I'm sure it will be their favorite game.

We had a good time last night in LoTRO PvMP.  (I play only Creep btw)

We defended a couple towers/keeps from the Freeps, then hopped into the new public dungeon and killed some stuff (PvE) then ran across a group of Freeps trying to kill a boss, so we slaughtered them, then killed the boss after it reset.

We poked around and killed more PvE stuff, a few more bosses, then the towers/keeps shifted hands and groups of Freeps started coming into the new dungeon, we tried to fight a large group of freeps but they owned us, I think we only killed 2-3 of them before they wiped us.

It was fun.

Point is, the PvE new dungeon is only accessible if your side controls 3/5 of the PvP objectives, and control of the objectives can switch while people are in the dungeon, so you can then come in behind PvE groups and PvP them. It's the first attempt of hopefully many more to give more meaning and point the the PvMP game other then advancing your ranking/rating.

I love the new screens.

WAR has always had a unique art style, but been lacking (at least from what they've released) in terms of overall "quality".

These pics are great because they show off the amazing art style, and also show what the game looks like all pumped up full of eye candy.

The truth is in how it looks in motion, and from all the videos I've seen of actual gameplay, it looks smooth, and the quality is definetly there.

Good post!

Honestly, even though they say it on the cover, I still don't believe it.

Blizzard says that they are the "worlds largest online game" so right there you have a point of contention.

This means one of the two is lying, or is ignorant.

Yes, I'm biased towards Lineage II because I think it's a horrible, poorly designed, grind-fest, bot filled, gank / grief extraveganza.

But, that is my opinion.

I mean, check this out.

"Reporting 610,918 unique users during the month of March 2007." from wikipedia

And get this, "MMORPGs are very popular throughout the world, with combined global memberships in subscription and non-subscription games exceeding 15 million as of 2006." Also from Wikipedia.

So do you expect me to believe that more then 16 million of L2s players didn't play this past March? HA! What a joke.

Or that of the 15 million global MMORPG members in 2006, they were all L2?

L2 is totally full of @*%^ sorry.

No possible way they have 17 million world wide. None at all. They are lying.

On their server status, they have a total of 12 servers: Taken from L2vault.ign.com

Server Status
login 195 ms
bartz 152 ms
sieghardt 152 ms
kain 151 ms
lionna 151 ms
erica 151 ms
gustin 98 ms
devianne 87 ms
hindemith 88 ms
teon 24 ms
franz 24 ms
pts 151 ms

12 servers, 17 million players.... so that's 1.41 million players per server? Yeah &*%$ing right.

Even if this is ONLY U.S. servers, the US has about 2.5 million WoW players and they have hundreds of servers. Can lineage servers hold hundreds more players then WoW servers? I think not.

According to MMOGchart.com -

L2 is at about 1 million on Jan 2008.

Any way, no matter how you look at it, no possible way L2 has 17 million players world wide. What a joke.

Most big boys like to play with girls more than they do transformers so the games that have women playing would leave these type of games in the dust.

Maybe because the only thing REAL men find more attractive then a beautiful women is a 80 foot tall death machine...

Is he joking?

I've had my fair share of women, but I've never had a women who could level an entire city with robotic destruction.

Offer me the perfect woman or perfect Mech? I'd choose the perfect girl every time.

Offer me an OK woman or an OK mech, I'd choose the mech every time.

I tried to pay attention to the details the best I could, some very interesting things. Mostly from watching the other two videos, not the Squig Herder one...

1. Black Orcs (tanks) don't suck in PvP - Hurray

2. Black Orcs use combos (Talk of openers and finishers) - Hurray

3. Black Orcs have ability involving a kick to the "jibblies" - Hurray

4. Pace looks fast and frantic, positioning matters, LoS matters - Hurray

5. Squid Herders have multiple Squig types, including Ranged DPS - Hurray

6. Only thing I have never liked is that when you die, the screen kind of pauses for a sec and then does a quick fade then you see your body drop and get the "Rez now?" Box pop-up. I wonder why this is?

7. Squig Herders seem to have common use AoE (or at least frontal arc) attacks, not too strong in power but hits multiple targets - Hurray

8. I love how the arrows arc instead of shooting straight.

9. When the Black Orc solo killed a Stuntie (sorry Dwarf) he got like 2,250 xp. Nice. Leveling from PvP only, here I come!

10. These videos looked like 10vs10 (Squig herder one) and MAYBE 5vs5 or so in the Black Orc ones.. Though they may have been 10vs10 or more too. Dunno. Point is, looked like MUCH more actual killing and fast paced action then any WoW BG

Too bad the burglar update is going to make them even MORE overpowered in PvMP.

Oh well, I'll still kill you.

We'll let you get 3/5 towers, we'll let you go down and exlore the caves, then we'll retake a tower, sneak up behind you, and we'll be drowning in Infamy like it's going out of style!

JGE has a somewhat unique opportunity to re-define PvP in a MMO due to the true skill based combat.

Unlike EVE, or the classic SWG, or the founding UO, where the "skill" systems were merely use based skill leveling (or leveling over time of skills); JGE is truly "twitch" based skill.

So indeed a "noob" who is a hot hand with his/her joystick can and SHOULD be able to compete with the grizzled veteran spacer.

Looking at what has been successful, and where other modern titles under construction are going, the idea of shards with varying rule sets is most likely the most well received and profitable solution.

1. You need to have PvE oriented servers where PvP is either purely consensual (i.e. entering a specific instanced area) or a toggle of some sort. Be it guild vs. guild conflicts, it's still a form of a PvP toggle. Be it specific PvP missions or star systems, it's still a form of toggle.

2. You also need to have more PvP oriented servers where PvP is consensual only because you chose that server type. These still need to have "safe" areas such as home worlds/star systems. Even the hardcore PvPer wants to take a break and chat, sell loot, repair etc. in relative safety.

My suggestion for this type of server would be a faction based system. Not only does it create a sense of belonging which adds greatly to immersion, but it garauntees even the solo PvPer some backup and assistance.

On the other hand, the sci-fi space based universe lends itself greatly for the role of Pirate. Lawless, solo PKs who who just want to watch the world burn and get rich in the process.

This is fine, this kind of FFA element, but the ONE thing you HAVE to do to make FFA work is make the consequences of choosing the "dark" path very severe. Just the fact that because you attack anyone, anyone can attack you is NOT enough consequence for the PK. You have to make the role of anti-PK much more lucrative and valuable then the role of PK, for starters. Otherwise, you'll end up just like UO were the ganker/griefer ruled the day.

For FFA to work you have to make players really have to think about whether or not they should attack another player. If just given the option to attack, many will because they have no fear of retaliation or just consequence. This has been the #1 problem with all FFA PvP games.

It's hard to make players feel the consequences of their devious action in a MMO. It's just a game, why not kill that poor noob and steal his hard earned stuff? Or simple kill him for fun!

To do FFA PvP you need harsh consequences for the PK, and very, very lucrative rewards for the Anti-PK. I garauntee you'll still get plenty of PKs, but (hopefully) you'll also get enough Anti-PKs to balance things out.

DF still might happen, one never knows.  But I probably have a better chance to win the lottery.

Honestly I don't mean to flame, but WAR has over 500,000 people signed up for a Beta that is going on right now. The actual number in the beta right now? No clue, obviously.

Bad comparison Trollstar.

But yeah, I'm with you on my opinion of Darkfall. If it is ever released, I'll give it a whirl. I've I like it, I'll play it. If I don't like it, I won't play it. It's simple.

But you're also right, you and I both have a better chance of winning the lottery.

It will become a common practice in all future MMOs.

Mark my words.

Why will it become the new "standard?"

Because people are:

A) Tired of the devs telling us what looks cool, maybe I don't like the look of the uber gear
B) Tired of looking like garbage until you get the uber gear
C) Tired of looking exactly like everyone else

For the PvP issue, I think this should apply to PvP as well. But you don't get to choose what you look like. Let me explain:

PvP based on Rank, like LOTRO, and like LoTRO MP you get new looks when you gain Rank.

That way, you can look at another person and see what PvP Rank they are without having to mouse over them or click on them, etc.

Why? Increased performance, instant recognition of a player's relative prowess in PvP.

And also, what Army is the history of Armies has NOT had some sort of uniform? Some sort of visible identifiers of rank?

Prove to me you're uber based off what you do in PvP, not on how many shiny epix you are wearing.

There's been a lot of Darkfall buzz on this forum lately and I am happy to see one of my old threads get rezzed.  There are so many gamers who are so disappointed with the current crop of MMOs and have placed so much hope in this one, myself included.  When I first read about this game (years ago), it sounded like a game I couldn't wait to play.  But there have been other games that I have waited anxiously for, only to be let down.

I have my doubts that this game will ever get released if it has not been already.  If by some miracle it does, but turns out to be as disappointing as most of the others, will it be a fatal blow to the MMO industry or will gamers just move on to the next one that everyone waits anxiously to come out?

"So many gamers"

Really?

Even if EVERY SINGLE community member played the game at release, and even if there wasn't a SINGLE person who created TWO accounts, or created a account and never actually logs into the DF forums....

Let's say you then have 25-35 thousand people in DF community.

Because this is a 3rd party, "Indy" game you can expect all those or nearly all those who are seriously waiting for this game are part of the official community website yes?

So 25-35k people

Would I invest in a game like would only bring in 25-35k people? Or a game with 500,000+ already signed up for Beta (WAR) and/or in the online community (AoC)

I'm sorry, I just find comments such as "There are so many gamers who are so disappointed" as a complete and total LOL joke.

You DF people are silly. You are such a small niche community. EVE has more players online at peek then your entire community of well wishers!

I want DF to be released, I really do, and I hope ya'll enjoy it and it lives up to your expectations....

But DF will never be anything more then a "niche" game, a very small time operation that will not even tickle the rest of the MMO industry.

If it "turns out to be disappointed as most of the others, will it be a fatal blow to the MMO industry?"

LOL are you serious?

No one will care.

Sorry, I really am, I just see a post like this and it makes me laugh.
Such delusions!

Just to be sure-

You based your decision that the community was piss poor based off of the occurances of a single multi-hour play session?

I'm just playin devil's advocate, like I said in my original post, I don't play anymore because I found the game to be so bland...

But I'm just saying that your decision doesn't make too much sense.

It's like saying that you went to Applebee's and there was a loud annoying kid crying and so you are never going back to Applebee's again.

The statistical odds of that child beeing there the next time you go and having to listen to the same kind of annoying crying episode are so statistically low...

Pretty much I'm just saying that you CAN'T under any circumstances judge a MMO community off of a single play session. You even said yourself that there "voices of reason" trying to calm the general chat idiots so why didn't you strike up a private conversation with them?

Do you get my point?

2/12/08 3:30 PM
Viewed 1503, Replies 28

/leave general chat

I quit playing because of the vanilla game play. The community of ANY game is only as good as how much effort you put forth towards finding like minded individuals.

People who complain about community, honestly, there are thousands of Guild websites for MMOs out there, probably 10s or 100s of thousands of Guilds with websites.

Google search "Your game name" and "Guild sites" or something and poke around till you find a group of people you can see yourself getting along with.

Unless you already have friends/family that play the game, you just can't walk into a MMO blind and expect to see the best the community has to offer.

9 times out of 10, you walk into a MMO community blind you'll only see the *ssbags and idiots. Why? Because the rest of us always turn off general chat and stick to our /guild channels.

If you already have gone through it 6 times and have level 70 character(s) why would you want to do it again?

My guess (and this is NOT a flame) is that you want to try PvP and/or PvE as a different class.

I know, it happens. A friend of mine who was an uber Tank got so sick of tanking responsibilities that he rolled a Rogue, and after his Rogue hit 70 I don't think he ever touched his Tank again

I do understand the desire..

I got burned out in the end-game Raiding so I started leveling up another toon, then I realized that I was only leveling towards the same end-game Raiding. WoW had lost it's "magic."

Sounds to me like you did a good thing by cancelling your sub.

And, nevertheless, the OP went right ahead and started "reading into" it.

QFT

Honestly though, back to the original topic: possibility of removing classes before launch-

I really don't see how they could. Each race HAS to have 1 of each archetype. If not, what do you do? Say :

"Sorry Dark Elves, but you don't get a ranged DPS class till later. Good luck in RvR."

"Opps, turns out Empire doesn't get a tank right now. Good luck in PvE!"

They have set themselves to have 4 archetypes, with each race having one class of each archetype. They HAVE to keep that. I'd rather they have a 1/2 buggy/broken class in at launch then simply saying that a race doesn't get an entire archetype choice. That'd be bull.

Now I can imagine it's very difficult to manage 24 classes, trying to make each unique and interesting and balanced... that's a daunting task. I'm more then willing to give them time post-launch to smooth out the rough edges. I'd much rather see that then a game wear every single Tank was the same, no matter what race, every Melee DPS the same despite racial choice etc.

I think the problem is that there weren't enough players period.

So who cares what those players say? You have to have a minimum amount of players to have the money to keep the game going, keep your devs paid, etc.

And given what has happened to Fury post launch, I highly doubt they got that minimum number.

Their thought process, in my opinion:

1) People like PvP

2) People don't like ganking/griefing open world PvP

3) People like fast paced action / no wait times

4) Let's make Unreal Tournament, but swords&sorcery

After launch...

1) Crap

2) Failed

3) "You're fired!"

4) Server's shut down

Best PvP game around? I think you'll find a great many people who disagree with you there, and considering the state of Fury at the moment, I doubt you'll be able to convince anyone that Fury is anything but a steaming pile.
