[Column] WildStar: Is a 'Sandpark' Even Possible?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/14/13 6:12:17 PM
Ask 100 people what a sandbox is and get 100 different answers. A sandbox can most certainly have thempark elements like quests/dungeons even raids. The key to a sandbox is having degradable/destroyable items and a robust crafting system, this in turn creates a supply/demand ecconomy where player interaction is essential. The key to a sandbox is also having an open world area of the game where pvp can take place usually with a reason to be there i.e resources. And thus begins the endless cycle of territorial control and crafting supply and demand
A sandbox has nothing to do with non instanced player housing or terrain deformation like i've read in some threads. Just look at EVE which has neither of these things. The ability to effect the game world comes primarily from player interactions, and the stories that arise from said interactions. |

I'm just amazed people would pledge for a game that's due out in 3 years time, lol 2016. A lot can happen in 3 years. |

Smedley: "EverQuest Next will be the world's largest sandbox-style MMO ever made"

Whatever EQ2 next is, it's not a sandbox unless 99% of the items in the game can be destroyed and created.

The number 1 rule of sandboxes..(lookin' at you Smed)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/20/12 8:31:02 PM
The number 1 rule of sandboxes is... "Items must be able to be destroyed". Every single item must either degrade on use, or be completely destroyed from either A NPC or a Player / Environment. This in turn creates an ecconomy, and prevents market inflation. It creates player jobs/crafting/trading etc etc.
I think the number 2 rule should be "Every item in the game can also be crafted"
Just like eve online |

I loved EQ2, played it for 5 years. Games don't last forever, they eventually get old and tired. I would like to see todays MMO's last 5 years. I thank Smedly for giving me 5 years of friendships and adventures, there's nothing more i want in an MMO than this.
Smedley also plays EVE Online in a nullsec corp, so i think he has some idea about Sandboxes, that and the fact that he created the fucking genre you are playing :)
Bring on EQNEXT. |

It must take quite a while to beat down the keep doors with only 10 people playing :P I'm enjoying GW2, it's very polished, but i'll still be raiding in RIFT. I'm in absolutley no rush to smash through the GW2 content, for the first time in ages i'm stopping to smell the roses. Awesome game so far.
Playing at 2560x1600 on 7970 the game is maxed out and smooth as a babies bum, awesomesauce.. |

I'll say, lol 300 posts and joined since 2012 I've seen the same trend since 2004 on these forums, same trend different game :D |

Originally posted by Aerowyn I just find it funny how you think you're the self proclaimed defender of gw2, i've been reading your posts laughing at how you think the game is the be all and end all of MMO gaming. I used to think like that once, when i was young and naive.. It will be the same as the last 10 MMO's.. big for a few months, till the next big thing. Me personally, i'm waiting for the ultimate sandbox, Archeage looks ok but meh it's asian, and they don't translate well. Don't get me wrong i'm excited for the game too, me and 3 other mates have bought it. We're currently raiding Infernal Dawn in RIFT, for us GW2 will be a filler between raid nights. TBH RIFT isn't even that great, i just log in for the raids.

Guild War 2 Might Cost you more than you think

I donated 50 bucks to GGG for Path of exile, because they made a good game not because i wanted anything, i was already in beta.
It's time to man up and pay for the hobby you love, if you don't support these artistic creations there won't be any left. You will have COD 78 rehashed generic game instead.
Hell don't pay for extras !! you can still play a good game. |
