This is a repost of an article found here. Wilder Public Relations is a corporately recognized company by Linden Labs.

-----------------------------

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

We’ve all heard the phrase before, and if used correctly, it’s always used sarcastically. Any content creator or business owner in Second Life knows that there is nothing more frustrating, annoying, or downright infuriating than a content thief. In a virtual world where you can be anything you want to be, create anything you want to create, and live any life you want to live, I have to wonder: why do we still have copy cats?

A lot of attention has been paid lately to those thieves that take the hard work of others and pass it off as their own. Many think that these stories apply mostly to designers whose fashions are copybotted and resold in sleazy discount shops and obscure profiles on XStreet, but the ugly truth is that these purloining miscreants have pervaded nearly every area of our second lives. At Wilder, we have had the unfortunate task of helping several of our clients deal with the pilfering of their designs, and we’ve had our share of would-be plunderers snooping around the office for our keys to success as well. It has long been our practice to deal with these indiscretions in-house, saving everyone time and embarrassment, but recently a case has come to our attention so blatantly obvious, and therefore all the more heinous, that we choose to remain silent no more. Now we choose to expose and examine up close a content thief, in the hopes that she will never again steal from us or anyone else, and in the hopes that content thieves everywhere will realize that the time is coming when their underhanded and deceptive larceny will be tolerated and supported by no one.

So here you have it SL, the profile of a copy cat.

First, some history. Jaydell Lorefield was employed at Wilder Public Relations Firm for one week nearly a year ago. During this one week of training, Annette and then-manager Mahala Bing began to suspect that she may have had ulterior motives for joining the Wilder Team. When it became clear that Jaydell was opening her own company and using business experience and knowledge gained from her employment at Wilder PR, Annette took action to protect Wilder PR and terminated Jaydell’s employment. Since then, Jaydell has opened a real estate and interior design company called Lorefield & Associates. Annette, and later I, have invested our time in growing Wilder and gaining even more success for ourselves and our clients.
We’ve run into Jaydell from time to time: she has shown up randomly at our office, kept our company in her profile, and shadowed us to our clients’ events. Each of these things on its own is not necessarily a grievance for us; we welcome visitors to our office, we believe that each resident has a right to include whatever information he wishes in his profile, and we encourage everyone in SL to support our clients and their events. However, we believe this is a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Upon further investigation, it has become clear to us that Jaydell’s goal in keeping tabs on Wilder PR has been to copy our business strategy in an attempt to make her company, and in particular her newest venture, Lorefield Media, as successful as ours. Consider this evidence:

In July of this year, Annette designed a new logo for Wilder Public Relations. This is the logo and link to the blog post where Annette introduced it:

Several weeks later, Annette found Jaydell in our office getting our new landmark (containing the new logo) and subsequently ejected and banned her. Not long after that, Lorefield & Associates had a new logo as well:
As you can see, the two logos are substantially similar. At Wilder, we have known about this for several months, but because we are not in the business of starting drama over something as trivial as a logo, we kept our peace.

We’ve taken little notice of Lorefield & Associates until recently, when we happened upon their webpage. Though recently revamped by myself, our webpage has been up for over a year (including the period when Jaydell was employed here) with the original design and layout by Mahala Bing. You may compare the two here: http://www.wilderpublicrelationsfirminc.com/wordpress/ and http://lorefieldassociates.webs.com/.
Please note the similarities in structure, especially the Home and About pages. Though the website is not an exact copy of ours, a reasonable person informed of the history between Jaydell Lorefield and Wilder Public Relations could surmise that her website borrows heavily from ours. As a reasonable person, you be the judge.

Finally I come to the third and most appalling piece of evidence against Jaydell. At Wilder Public Relations, one of the most important components to our PR strategy is the press release. It should be noted that the unique design and format of our press releases was created by Annette before Wilder Public Relations even opened its doors, that is to say she was using this design well over a year ago when she was still working for AVENUE Inc.

Please see for yourself a press release posted on the Lorefield Media blog where Jaydell has not only taken our format and changed both the Media Contact information and the COPYWRIGHT notice at the bottom to refer to herself and her company, but has largely stolen the content from a press release WE wrote for OUR client Mami Jewell for the Miss Narkissos Contest: http://lorefieldmedia.blogspot.com/2009/09/do-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-miss.html. Our press release may be viewed on our website here: http://www.wilderpublicrelationsfirminc.com/wordpress/?p=620 and on our blog here: http://wilderprfirminc.blogspot.com/2009/09/search-is-on-for-miss-narkissos-have.html . We distribute press releases such as these in the hopes that our clients will gain maximum exposure throughout the SL community, not so that that our content might be plagiarized by those who would like to call themselves our competitors.

At Wilder Public Relations, we believe that Second Life is the platform of the future. We believe wholeheartedly in the potential that this virtual world has to offer us. We have been blessed with wonderful clients who amaze us again and again with their creativity and talent. We represent the best SL has to offer because we are the best in our field. We know that those with the drive and ambition to make something of their second lives have limitless possibilities here, and we know it because we’ve seen it again and again. We welcome competition because we know that is what drives business; we’ve seen healthy competition between our clients and know that in the end everyone wins. Stealing is not competing, it’s cheating. We encourage all of our Second Life neighbors to become whoever or whatever they’d like to be here in this world we’ve created, but we implore you, do it with dignity, do it with integrity, and do it with respect.

Second Life is created by its users, and it could just as easily be destroyed by them as well. We like to think that we make the rules here, but that is not the case. If you think you are anonymous in Second Life, think again. There is legal action that can be taken against content thieves, whether that content be a fashion design, a product, or a website. Whether it be in-world or just online, each of us is still subject to infringement laws, and each of us is protected by them as well. If you are reading this and you’re in the business of stealing from others online, please stop. If you think you cannot be found, you’re mistaken. Wilder Public Relations was built from the ground up by Annette Wilder, and she and I and our team will continue to work hard to continue a success we can be proud of. We will no longer tolerate the theft of our ideas or strategies. We will always stand up for our rights and the rights of our company, and we will stand up for the rights of our clients should they ever need us.

As always, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to our clients, colleagues and friends for their unending support and contribution to our success. We appreciate you standing with us as we speak out against content theft in Second Life and pledge to stand by you should such misfortune ever befall you. Together we can fight this new era of dishonesty and return Second Life to the unique platform for creativity that it was meant to be.

I find it incredible that you'd cover this under the aspect of roleplaying-Gor essentially is just fetish fuel getting off on the subjugation of women based on books that are worse than L. Ron Hubbard. It's also a "lifestyle" so you can't even claim the roleplay canard, adherents do it in real life as much as possible.

If anything Gor needs to be ridiculed and marginalized in Second Life, because it contributes to a bad perception that all it is is deviant sex and linden dollars.

Again some people will always carry anything thing to far. I am RPing an Outlaw Warrior; I do not own anyone and never will. I am RPing there because I like the PvP and the RP, which as a 16 year Vet of MMORPGs I have only found together in one other game (UO). I do not take leave with the camp girls and I am for sure not the only one that is there for the RP-PvP aspect of the game play. I am now working on another article in the series based in another format (Starwars RP) and I may RP there as well, and again only for the story based PvP.

It's not like people stop playing MMOs because some people die from exhaustion, playing till they drop, or we no longer study physics, chemistry and astronomy in school, because scientology is gonna eat you.

Responding to extremism by complete boycotting the focus of their fanatism - providing, of course, it is something you find enjoying - is silly.

No way I would give up something I love, because others haven't figured out yet that too much of a good thing is bad for you.

I love a good post of reason thank you

its all kind of like saying "Holy crap, I love a nice NY Strip Steak … but wait a medical website says it could kill me … I better give it up all together rather than find the right portion to eat."

There'll always be extremists and fanatics. They pop up in every aspect capable of an extreme.

That's not the same as that people shouldn't RP what they want. Just because some people can't make the distinction and take things too serious, I don't see why it should discourage others from having fun with their RP.

I know people in sl, intelligent people with common sense and a future who got involved with gor on sl for "fun" for "RP" some of them were really excellent rp, but slowly they got drawn into it, a couple of friends no longer talk to me because im not gor, others have left the internet completely because of there experiences in gor and one young lady I had the please of knowing quit her degree course and no longer talks to her family.

I personally have hadto help council and try to repair the hurt and pain for over 30 men and women who either they got involved in gor or there partner/daughter/husband got involved.

Gor is not rp like any other it is mostly rp with a core purpose to draw you into that lifestyle outside of rp.

It is classified as a cult, in some ways worst than scientology and or doomsday cults because gor starts out as harmless fun, but your slowly drawn in, your friends become members or the only friends who seem to "understand" you are members of gor, your family doesn't, your outside friends don't understand etc.

This isn't a small faction of gor this is 80-90% of goreans online and rl.

If you play around with this, if you think your smart enough or it won't happen to you then you have my comisirations, i've seen gor member "a clique" of 3-4 girls who will befriend a new roleplayer, be her best friend for however long it takes to draw you in, months even, be there for everything your trauma, your problems, get inside your head, then draw you in.

Thank you for your very detailed post, but I have yet to see it having much bearing on the reality of RP in SL by the Gorean community. Anything can be taken to an extreme, I know people that went to the Jedi academy in NY and really think that makes them a Jedi. Those that have taken Gor to RL have done so on their own and for their own reasons, breathing foulness into the writings of Norman. I personally do not feel that those that practice a RL translation of a fictional writer’s works should be a disrupting force on those that want to RP in a richly detailed world created by a relatively competent writer. These individuals would have found some form of their little fantasy even if JN had never wrote a word. Gor does not equate to BDSM although some drag it in. There are many who simply play it as a Warrior or Free Woman or Free companion that never enter the seedier side of the RP. Many of those that enter Gor RP in SL because they are into BDSM simply leave because that is in no way the focus of the majority of the RPers there. SL is by far not the same as the IRC and IM version of the Gor community. There is a difference of being a fan of the writing and thinking you can buy and sell people RL which is part of some of the IRC and IM groups. Those reading the books and not injecting their own fetishes will find that the main character often frees slaves, helps the down trodden, and is an all around hero type of guy. So please if your friends took it to far, I am sorry, but that is something within them and not within the norm. People need to learn that these are virtual worlds, and although they can be fun, they are just games and not reality. Taking a fantasy world like this and making it your real world is a sign of instability and the person needs help not a MMORPG. I play Darkfall but I dont hack people apart with my sword in the streets nitghly and loot their warm dead bodies before they rez and run back so I can do it again.

Personally I don't role-play, I'd rather have a story told to me then actually try to go through the hassle of creating my own (and generally I don't think any I could create would be any good). Also, the desire to roleplay inside of a savage and barberic culture where treating women like slaves is acceptable is entirely beyond me. Don't they realise that "conceiling" women does anything but? They actually stick out like sore thumbs to any would-be harrasser/rapist and it ends up treating them like second class citizens which means that male children see them as less valuable as themselves and seperate but not equal. But I concede that in the end this is a choice the role-player makes, and they have the right to denigrate themselves however they see fit. I just hope they acknowledge the damage these kinds of actions cause in real life and understand that their role-playing should not be extended into it.

In the logic of the Gorean raider the robes of concealment could just as easy hide the ugly as they hide the beautiful so those in the robes are often passed by. Another valuable point is that the robe are heavy and cumbersome, many of the free women of Gor are actually jealous of the Kajira who get to wear light beautiful silks. It is also important to note that there are plenty of free women that own male slaves called kajirus. Just as easily as a Kajira can be collared for pleasure, or work so can a kajirus be likely collared …. So guard those necks guys.

Out of all the things they could possibly report on in this "Non" Game they continue to allow on this website..they have to go and report on one of the more disgusting communities?  I mean seriously the subjucation and enslavement of women..yea sure its an RP and the females that participate do so willingly but its hardly a Good RP community to play in.  I mean how hard is it create a barbaric asshole that keeps women hidden under clothes and bring him to life?  Not very.

Atleast in Conan women could be ass kicking warriors as well in Gor if your a woman you might as well be a spec of dirt.

I still whole heartedly protest Second Life being on this website.  Its not a game...its Creators have said its NOT a game.   Its a social and creative atmosphere and some people just happen to run RPG games out of it.   When they aren't being bombarded by people making fun of them.

Um as far as female Warriors ... do some reading, the Panthers are a all female Warrior tribe in the storyline.

and as far as Second Life not belonging here ...

Let’s see MMORPG.com OR

massively multiplayer online role-playing game .com

Now a bit further … Second Life is ….
Massively – yea its Massive largest game world to date as far as this player has seen.
Multiplayer - yea its Multiplayer 50,000 to 80,000 online at any given time.
Online – Linden Labs servers have some of the best uptime I have seen in any virtual world available.
role-playing – Thousands of role-play communities exist in SL so yea … its role-playing
game – although it can be more, Second Life is an entertainment medium house on a computer which really sounds like a game to me.

Second Life has as much right to be listed as any other ‘game’ here on this site dedicated to everything that Second Life falls under by definition.

In the books, the subjugated are all women, but if you read the article, men and women play both genders.  It squicks me out a bit too -- as though they had said, "this is the antebellum south, but whites *or* blacks can play slaves behind the keyboards."

This is so *not* the community I would have highlighted in SL though.  Why don't you profile NPIRL, or Better World Island, or if you want it to sound MMO-like, any of the medieval, Star Trek, Firefly, and various other game hud sims?

*SIGH*

Anyone wants a well-rounded tour of SL, DM me, and I'll introduce you to the real people.

This article is one of many on the subject of role-play in Second Life. The Gor community is one of the largest and is a starting point. The next article will cover Starwars role-play in Second Life, and the one after that is Battlestar Galactica role-play. There are as many styles of role-play in SL as there are people who visit that world, I am only introducing these elements to the readers so that they can find their own direction. Second Life has every tool available for any community to launch any style of role-play and it is this facet I am trying to bring to the attention of readers here.

Depending on the gender of your AV you might want to look into one of the many modeling agencies in SL. It pays a bit better than camping and does not require taking clothes off lol. Basically SL model are living mannequins to display clothing for various shops. Also there are a lot of shops that use greeters and again the pay is better than camping. One last thing is contests at clubs, many of them will have best/worst dressed and a varity of other contests, so explore, find your favorit place to hang out, and get in their group so you get notifications of contests. You can message me in game if you need any help.

© A WILDER PR INC. PRESS RELEASE MARCH 2009

I should have an article up next week covering viewer, and I am locating downloads for them all.

Sorry you feel that way, but I still stand by :

M – yup its massive, largest world out there as a matter of fact, and SL is still growing.

M – Yes sir its multiplayer over 50k people logged into the same game world at any given time.
Lots of companies claim to be able to give you 50k at a time, but SL does it

O – Online, again yes and its uptime is awesome.

RP - everything from BSG rp to Gor rp. Truly something for everyone.

G – Yea it’s a game, but its also a virtual world platform.

MMORPG's can be about far more than grinding quests, and everyone’s opinion of what makes a game great varies. As to the concept “an actual MMO gamer” I would be interested in knowing how you define that, because many of the players I know in SL have played just about everything out there. I have my self been playing since UO, and have played dozens of games since then. I currently have four active game account, only one of which is SL.

Hell there are those that even think its a great game to travel thread to thread trying to flame.

This thread is about SpaceJunkies video, not what makes and MMORPG better than another.

Some of these issues can be resolved with a better viewer. There are some great ones out there and I hope to cover some of them in an upcoming review.

SL is a truly interactive virtual world, like none other in the industry. Nearly all the content in SL is created by the community of SL. MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Unfortunately most companies forget the RP part. There is role-play in SL above and beyond anything I have ever found anywhere else. As far that to why it’s here on mmorpg.com, well the name of the site should be enough to clarify any confusion.

M – yup its massive, largest world out there as a matter of fact, and SL is still growing.

SpaceJunky is a wonderful example of what Second Life has to offer. I’ll be posting their upcoming concerts in this thread if anyone is interested in seeing them live in SL.

SL is free for a basic membership so what do you got to lose, and who knows you might find your own second life.

Social Networks guru Andrew Peters looks at the changing face of Twitter and reports on US Military plans to use holograms to keep service personnel in touch with their families while stationed overseas.

Newsman Sigmund Leominster reports on a new virtual world, based on European Football, how Manchester Business School is using virtual worlds to train their senior executives, how Everquest can trigger depression - and the safest way to experience the running of the bulls in Spain - virtually.

On a more serious note, we take a look at a moving tribute in music and pictures by some Second Lifers to the victims of the devastating bush fires in Australia with their song, 'Too Many Tears'.

And American singer/song writer Dann Russo performs 'Parking Lot Kings'.

That's coming up March 1st right here, on Life On Line.

The cast also includes a practicing Sydney Psychotherapist whose online name is Dr Roman Candle. He covers a range of behavioural issues describing how people interact with each other in a virtual environment.
Virtual worlds Second Life, Twinity and Entropia Universe (Calypso) are well represented with dedicated correspondents reporting on each. There are guest comedians and musicians and interviews with people making news across the internet.

In social media style, content for the show is driven by viewers who can join the viewers’ group and offer their thoughts and ideas for content on the program and the future direction of the show.

Theres something in Secondlife for everyone. For some though the newbie shock just is too much. My advise to anyone trying second life is to talk to people, and get help. There are tons of freindly people willing to help, for that mater shoot me a tell my name in SL is the same as here Arra Jinx.

But you can be confident that the game server will work tomorrow.. you know, the one that was never stress tested.

Basically.

But at least they are giving everyone who purchases on day (along with people who pre-ordered) 3 free days added to their month of play.

sounds like they are trying, remember they are a small company doing something really big.

I am not one to say that graphics are everything, hell I played UO for 6 years (my longest run in any MMO).

The other thing that tweaked me happed more recently and is nothing more than me being a Blat-A$$. I checked the forums over a month ago and had access to the beta forums, after some reading I see that anyone that had such access should also have a beta key. Well after a month of trying to talk to the Mods over there about a key and getting no response I gave up on DFO all together.

This post seems to boil down to, "They didn't let me play when I wanted to , so I don't wanna play no more".

These I like as well. It's kind of like when someone gets banned and then throws a fit, ending the rant with "Good! I am glad I got banned, I didn't want to play anyways" this is generally followed by them finding a means of playing anyways lol.

I said I was just blatting, the secondary reason isn’t really a reason. I just settled into the games I do play and put DFO aside. I wish the game well, but I already P2P for 3 games and didn’t need another. There’s no need to carry the anger of the DFO forums over here, my fanboi'ism just died down and got placed into other games. I am glad though that they have a loyal fan base with players like yourself, we all need to find what makes each of us happy.
