IMHO WAR's PvP systems are probably more open to the PvP fans. The gameplay and everything is very familiar from games of past and the whole 'leveling, looting and gaining money from PvP' thing is kinda cool. DAoC was supposed to have the same thing though, and it never really worked out right. However Mythic does have good PvP systems in DAoC (well if you call perpetual zerging and the team that stunlocks their enemy first wins.. PvP. But what ever. I think nobody has done GREAT PvP so we just have Mythics to look upon as the best.)

So yea.. WAR has more open PvP, with systems for PvPers to lvl up and get gear and money and some fairly intersting ideas.

BUT.. then you've got Age of Conans PvP. Sure it's not as open, you cant level by PvPing or probably get loot or gold through PvPing. But it's PvPing is based more on the PLAYERS skill and uses a new and unique real-time combat system that isn't button mashing your best special, but actually working off your enemy, doing combos, comming together in formations. More blood and gore and everything fun. :)

So to sum up:

WAR PvP more open, keep sieging, buttom mashing. Probably VERY similar to DAoCs.

AoC PvP less open, realistic combat based on player skill. Cavalry men lowering their spears and running through a group of mages in a casting circle attempting to bring down hell on the enemy keep while the pikeman lower their pikes the attempt to stave off the cavelry. Silent hunters carefully observing enemy positions and balista rain fire down upon enemy troops. Blood and guts flying everywhere in the chaos and fog of battle.

WAR PvP more open.

AoC PvP far more interesting and realistic.

So you call it. Do you want 100% PvP every time to lvl. Or do you want realistic PvP based on your actual skill?

EDIT: Oh and WARS PvP isn't 100% all the time. It's still set in certain zones. Only each main zone has a 'pvp area' and IS concensual. Those who dont want to PvP, stay out of the 'red' areas that are PvP open. It's really only slightly different then the boarder zones for free 100% PvP in AoC.
To name a few that EA shut down themselves.

Earth & Beyond

The UO sequal and the other UO in works (there were two I believe that were shut down before release by EA.)
"Lol...World of Darkness cannot, in any way, be considered Cyberpunk."

Have you played Revised Ed. Mage? Or Werewolf? There are some serious cyberpunk overtones to the two RP systems. Given your own definition of Cyberpunk..

"Cyberpunk is gritty, dark, and dystopian."
"First things first...

Im a big fan of daoc, played the game for a long time and I dont know what your talking about. Changing the entire focus of classes....thats laughable and fictitious."

Is it now? If you can find one, ask an Eldritch who's been playin since around the first year how different their class was then compared to now. I played Daoc from it's early days off and on for about 3 years. I'm not making things up.

"EA doesnt have all the power you think they have. I cant even immagine the lawsuits that would take place if they decide to do Mythics People wrong--and then you have Warhammer's people that would get in on that. Why would EA want to mess anything up anyways. Warhammer is toted as the wow killer...and Im sure that EA-Mythic will do everything in there power to make a great game that does just that."

Lmao do a google search on lawsuits against EA. You'll see they do this stuff all the time and have been sued over it. Every new MMOG is 'toted as the WoW-Killer' just as every one was at one time the 'EQ-Killer.' That by no stretch of the imagination is true. I've been playing and testing MMOGs for 6 years now. You want to disagree with me, thats fine. But you watch, if WAR isn't everything it's cracked up to be, you'll find it changed to be more like WoW, mark my words.

"Why dont you hold your opinions about Warhammer till the game is actually released.
The Future is in the future and you dont have a crystal ball."

Nor do I claim to have one. And I have no real opinions about WAR right now. It doesn't really interest me, but I'm not the type of person to bash it because it doesn't interest me. All I have is experience and educated guesses and a knowledge of EA's sorted history with MMOGs to base my opinions on. And yes, I know what I wrote above.. is my opinion. But IMHO it's a damn good one ;)

I hate to be a downer but with Mythics huge reputation as the nerf king (after SOE of course) and changing the entire focus of classes years after a games release (though they are known for stable and relatively bug-free games), combined with EA's corporate arsehole syndrome.. you better REALLY love that game, enough to be a blind fanboi, in order to NOT notice the bullcrap that will go on in it. And you better hope it's super successful from nearly the get go, cause EA wouldn't give a second thought at shutting it all down if they feel they aren't making enough money. Or worse yet, forcing the devs to put so much time in that they get sloppy.. or even worse, forcing them to make a WoW clone.
My all time fav is Anarchy Online followed by Star Wars Galaxies, but thats the past.

For right now, my fav is WoW. I know.. it's bashed constantly but I admitted to myself not long ago that, as of right now.. nobody does it better. There isn't a better one.. period. I know I'll get jumped over this by all kinds of people, but really I've played nearly all of the current MMOGs and in the CURRENT situation, none of them come close to WoW.

Now I say it does it better right? I actually dont believe that, disected, wow even comes close to many MMOGs. I mean.. like

1: Their PvE - Good, fast paced and involving kinda. But blown away by Eves or CoX's.

2: Their PvP - Fun and interesting, but oh so blown away by DAoC or GW or again Eve.

3: Their Crafting - Fun, scaled well and crafted plays a viable roll in the game. But so utterly BLOWN AWAY by old SWG crafting. Even Horizons was better crafting.

4: The Social Atmosphere - Again fun, they do have a LOT of events and at least on my RP server people do infact RP a fair ammount, and isn't FULL of d00ds. But again blown to shite by old SWG or even better, Anarchy Online with it's bars, clubs, pubs, hundreds of social clothing, events, it's own radio station (Gridstream Productions you rock) huge parties on the glass dancefloor, drinks, food you actually cary and use lol.

So broken down, it's not nearly as good as many others. But TOGETHER, it's more polished and bug free then all of them. It's by no means perfect.. not at all, nothing is. But as a whole, it's simply better then the rest. Evidense of that is the population.

Given 6 months or so.. my fav will be AGE OF CONAN BABY!
Just a little more proof as to why many of us dont buy EA games if we can avoid them.

In the previous shut down online services they forgot to mention the several MMOGs they either shut down before they even released or shut down within a year because they weren't immediately super successful. :/ EA can bite me for all I care, I likely wont buy another of their games. Their strong-arm tactics at taking over the sports-game industry, shutting down games that (as many above) are BARELY two years old and the many law suits by EA's employees, EA sucks and we all know it. This is just even more evidense to back that up. Whats next? BF2?

Man-O-man, I'd give my two front teeth to have a really good Sci-fi/Cyberpunk MMOG...I'd even be willing to wait a few years to get it.

I don't know about the rest of you but whenever I think about genetic enhancements, nanobots, cyberware implants, and the like...my naughty parts start misbehaving! I can't even watch the science channel anymore without getting upset and having to excuse myself to the bathroom.

So, Id like to get your ideas on what style of Cyberpunk you think would make an excellent MMOG and why.

* Terminator series

* Bladerunner

* Shadowrun

* Ghost in the Shell series

* The Matrix (I'm trying to forget about the fake "The Matrix Online", so let's consider it a do-over.)

* William Gibsons' Sprawl Trilogy (if you haven't read these Master Strokes, you can get them here.)

* System Shock

* Deus Ex

There are more, but these are the important ones...

My personal favorite is Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy: Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

Add to your list the World of Darkness PnP RPG system. It's not scifi but it's got cyberpunk written all over it, especially Mage.

Also.. no System Shock 1/2? Deus Ex was nothing compared to SS2, and if anything takes it's entire inspiration from the game comming as close as you can to litterally stealing RP systems from it. If you never played it, find it, buy it if you most, and play it. I'm telling ya you'll never be the same, especially if your as HUGE a fan of scifi/cyberpunk as you say :)

I've been waiting patiently for a World of Darkness MMOG to come out for years now. The closest appears to be the new one from Tulga, but given their last one being the worst ever made up until DnL. It's vampires vs werewolves and they insist it's has nothing to do with the WoD, but you just KNOW they got the idea after a few games of it on saturday night :p
Lol your welcome. Give it a year or so for Havok to release their onboard solution and you may find the market and the cards much better. Right now they are buggy and overly expensive and hardly do anything at all accept produce a few more particle effects that, as I said above, are only on screen for a split second. Some games they show improvements in, others they actually reduce framerate.

NOT worth getting un less you've got $300 to blow on junk, but how many people can say that?

You'd be MUCH better off getting a 7900GT for that money, or a second video card for SLI.
Yea sorry but you spent $300 on a hyped up piece of garbage that is supported in so few games it's laughable and even those it's supports all you get are a few more particles on screen for .5 seconds and reduced framerates.

Was it worth it?

""Combat is one of the main areas we are really concentrating on next to guild systems. We are trying to make the combat extremely brutal and violent to a degree not seen in a mmorpg before.""

Hmm.. sounds like Age of Conan. Only, no where near as compeling. Brutal combat is one thing, real time combat on a large scale in realistic warfare is another. :)

Oh and the one dude is right. You might want to be careful, they've already scammed a LOT of people and taken a LOT of money for games that never existed in a playable state in the first place.
You mean EA? :)

People tend to get those two mixed up. Granted they are, debatably, the two most notorious publisher/developers in the industry.
My hype just went from like a 7.2 to a 5.5. Raids.. suck. Theres nothing I enjoy more when I max a character out then competing with 40 other people over a 4 hour spawn or a 8 hour raid in pitiful hopes of getting a drop.

LotRO.. meet WoW.

I was already hesitent do to this being Turbine and we all know their track record (one fairly successful hit, though NOTHING on the likes of early EQ in terms of popularity, let alone UO or DAoC... 2 terrible misses.) As above.. 333. Now we know raids are in. I can see small group raids but if they are ANYTHING like the campfest bore-me-to-sleep raids of EQ or WoW.. we just lost hopes for a good MMOG based on Tolkiens fantastic mythology in favor of subscription numbers.

The way the dev said it, you just know his conversation with the suits went like this;

"We want to make as much money as possible. WoW is so successful we think it's because of raids (when raids have SO LITTLE to do with WoWs success.)"

"What? But I already told the community we wouldn't have them. Nearly all MMOG players dont want to raid, and a good many hate to raid at all."

"Well thats not our problem"

"But... raids dont fit into Tolkiens lore what so ever. Really besides massive battles against many foes there was no 'raiding' in anything he ever wrote!"

"Well screw tolkien! Were just using that name to pull in subscribers, you know that!"

"But.."

"But nothing.. do as we say or your all fired. We can always pick up another crew that'll do your job for half the price over seas and do the game the way we see fit, to make as much money as quickly as possible!"

":(" *to team* "well guys we better get to work and figure out a way to get this thing in without totally screwing over our fanbase and our ideal for this game and world"

I can just imagine the shit fit that is going on over at the official forums.

You can still dismember in PvE :)

And I think if the community pushed for it enough the devs might change it to possible beheadings in PvP.. with say a crit at the end of a attack chain.

Even still it'll be bloody, you know that. Hehe.
Not to mention formation combat, horse riding combat, siege weapons to break the walls of your enemies keeps, mage circles bringing down hell upon the enemy, rogues climbing the fortresses, warriors harrying the troops to lower their pikes to take incomming cavalry, entrails, death and BLOODY WAR!

Yes I'm not a huge PvPer but AoC's PvP (and enemy city PvE) has me stoked!

AO. Simply one of the most unlikely complex MMOs you will find. You can play it simply, but once you start with the more complex features, the game is simply amazing.

QFT

I'm playing the fantastic AO (full game, not froob) and a little WoW. I'm giving consideration at trying EQ2 again, but in the next several months I'll be getting Neverwinter Nights 2 and then Age of Conan, so I dont think I have the time. But in another 6 months.. who knows.
Take a look at Age of Conan. Yes it's level based (though skill based as well, like AO is). It may well be the LEAST carebear game ever made.. and have PvP that.. yes even could outshine old UO and DAoC!
Do they have a free trail that goes beyond the newbie island that takes 4 hours to complete? If so.. I'll try it again.

I got a thing in the mail a while ago that had a 'come back' and included stuff about the new class system and PvP, but didn't include free play time. :/ I 'almost' did it, but I hadn't heard it was better (which I've been hearin now for a month or two.)

I thought 'wait now this is SOE were talking about.. remember how they screwed you over with your beloved Star Wars Galaxies!?!'

If they have a free trail that lasts longer then the 'trail of the isle' that I can finish in 3-4 hours.. I'm not really interested. But I did preorder the game some time ago so.. who knows.

Anarchy Online. You can play it free up to lvl 200 and get all the content except expansions.

The game is highly complex though and some MMOGers prefer a simple game that you can get into really quick, AO is not that game. It can take a few months before you really begin to understand how the game works. But if offers TUNS more content then any other free MMOG out there, hands down.

Also it's not an MMOG you can get your mits into in a few hours time. In fact it can take 100 levels to really get into the grits of it, or beyond.

www.anarchyonline.com - free year or more of play.

It has. start a supergroup and build a base. you can even raid other groups' bases :)

Ah.. I play CoX and.. no, it doesn't. Bases are little more then another huge grid of missions to get the millions of prestige need to build a base and you have to be in a really nice guild to ever experience any base raiding.

CoX seriously needs something to do besides missions and the sub-par PvP. It's player base is continuing to falter because it's just so shallow. Dont get me worng, I really do enjoy the game, but in stints of 4-8 months. It just gets to repetative after that.

As to AO you definately should give it a serious shot. The game is unparalleded in the MMOG word in many ways but you dont really get your hands in the dirt until you get some levels on you and start to really understand the system and all it's complexities. If you enjoy a complex game, AO has all you could ever want. :)
