Bumping this ^^

Thanks for the replies so far, going to youtube some of these when I have the time to check what I missed.

On a side note, what does everyone see as epic ? It seems the majority of the replies here are about big raids, big dragons, and large amounts of time invested. All of which I would agree with being epic.

For me, the thing that was absolutely coolest about the Kael'Thas fight (apart from gravity lapse)... when he ascends at the beginning of the 4th phase, dragged up by his magic, causing a massive explosion in the room, shattering all the glass - you look outside and actually see netherstorm, where you probably just came from after a wipe. Kael'Thas, now twice the size he was before, descends to start the fight again. This to me was epic on Ultimecia scales (if you have ever played FF8). :)

Hi,

I just thought I would start this topic, as the title said, asking what the most epic boss you fought in an mmorpg was, and more importantly, why.

I've been a hardcore WoW player for about 2 years now, and I've seen all of the content, and while I don't have any other mmorpg to compare it to, I think the game has some pretty immense encounters. The four that defined the game for me:

C'thun: Possibly the strangest boss I have ever come across in any game, let alone in an mmorpg. A giant eyeball that fires constant beams of death everywhere (you can easily get one shotted in this fight), spawns tentacles all around the room you fight him in, and, weirdest of all, you have to get swallowed by him and attack the inside of his stomach in the second phase to take him down. But what was most epic about this encounter was the voices, the whispering: "Your friends will abandon you", C'thun whispers on a number of occassions. This made the encounter epically creepy and all the better for it.

Kael'Thas Sunstrider: I often hear this is WoW player's favourite encoutner, and quite rightly so, it's epic beyond all proportions. A fight designed to make you panic, his assistants slowly release one by one, and you take them down; he then reanimates some weapons which you also have to take down, and then all of his advisors get resurrected at once: before Kael himself descents upon the unexpecting raid group. Thus follows the most panicked I have ever been while playing an mmorpg: phoenix's spawning which slowly die but their eggs must be dpsed, shock barrier which must be destroyed before Kael one-shots the tank, and finally, the most interesting gimmick I have ever seen in a boss fight: Gravity Lapse, the whole raid is teleported to Kael and flung into the air where gravity ceases to exist. You get to swim around in the air while trying to avoid the chain lightning, waiting for it to end so you can go and pound the boss. A truly epic fight that was sadly overlooked (once the attunements for harder content was removed) by much of the community.

Kalecgos:  Another gimmicky fight that I remember wiping for weeks on, but I can honestly say that for the weeks I wiped I did not once get bored of the fight. Basically two fights at once: A dragon in one realm, a demon in the other. You have to kill both within a few seconds of each other, or the fight will fail. How this is achieved is through portals which spawn randomly throughout the fight, and players must take the right portal at the right time with their group, to ensure that both bosses go down equally, there are enough healers in each realm, there is a tank for each realm, etc. What made this fight for me was the pure teamwork that went into it: It was the first time in my WoW career that everyone spoke on vent, when they had gone through the portal, and the fight as a whole was beautifully designed.

Kil'Jaeden: The final boss of the TBC period (as you might be able to tell, this is where I spent most of my time raiding) was the epic fight that it had always promised to be, much more so than an epic-but-ever-so-disappointing Illadin fight. While most guilds didnt get to see this pre-nerf (mine included) due to the cock-block that was M'uru, the fight after it had been nerfed still seemed as epic as it had always been. A fight of many phases, with many things to dodge (meteors, fireblooms), Kil'Jaeden would also spawn mirror images of a random party member which had to be taken down swiftly, and would regularly cast his ultimate move "Darkness of a thousand souls", which would instantly kill anyone in the raid. How was this countered ? Due to the allies you had made along the course of the game, the blue dragonflight are here to help you and provide you with - you guessed it - dragons. Chosen members of the raid would control a dragon which would help provide buffs and would shield party members during darkness, and added a new dynamic to the fight. Getting him down was much harder than it seemed, and like Kael'Thas, it was a fight primarly designed to make you panic. Getting him down was amazing and it was a fitting end to The Burning Crusade.

So, now that I've shared my experiences I would love to hear yours from mmorpgs - whether they be epic 40 man raid bosses, ones you've killed in a small group or even something you have soloed, are there any fights out there that have made you gasp in awe and yet thoroughly enjoy at the same time ?

Quarm Slaughters Kael Thas

Avatar of War Slaughters C'thun

Tanvu Slaughters Kil'Jadean

Mata Muram slaughters Kalecgos (my old wow server)

Lol, sorry I had to do the comparison of the two, not to take away from your moments. So please don't take this the wrong way =D

Actually in EQ we had epic 72 man raids and 54 man raids =D

Oh don't worry ;) I genuinely am interested. I want to see what I have been missing. And I'd like to hear about bosses that are more epic that the ones I have seen in WoW ;)

I'm not sure I understand all of the opinions in this thread, but in my own opinion.

Endgame for me is the progression from the offline rpgs I played before I started on WoW. Back in the days when Final Fantasy and Wild Arms rules my world, I remember enjoying a beautifully constructed story (similar to the lore in World of Warcraft, something which I follow in certain places), development of character (which is something I do believe is missing: however I am not too worried about this) and finally, the big tough monsters which I face as the game draws to a close.

The best example I can give of this is Ultimecia from Final Fantasy 8. When I first did this fight I just thought "Wow, this is absolutely beautiful". And it was, everything from the music, the shifting background, Ultimecia herself and all of her abilities, I was blown away. It was epic as I had been building myself up for it throughout the game.

For me this is carried on in mmorpgs (well, the only one I play, World of Warcraft). Before Kael'Thas, or Illadin, or Kil'Jaeden, or any boss we are about to kill, I have followed the lore of what has happened to them, my guild have discussed this boss and told us what we are going to be doing... and then we go in and wipe for days/weeks until they finally go down. And I can honestly say I have never been disappointed, even during the weeks of wiping. Every one of the "endgame" bosses for me so far have been more than I could have expected them to be.

And this is the progression I see from offline rpgs, the epic is still there, but this time I'm experiencing it with other people at the same time.

Sorry if I've waffled off topic here, to something which wasn't what was meant to be being discussed in this topic, but this is how I see endgame and I unfortunetly think I wouldn't be playing world of warcraft if it wasn't for this :)

Thank you for the replies.

I will definetly have to check out Runes of Magic since its free to play, I shall see how that goes.
And thank you too spinach8puff... I get the feeling you do this a lot don't you, sorry I couldn't have found this out for myself to save you the trouble :)

I shall definetly try to find out more about FF11, it's something my old guildmaster on WoW used to play so I can ask him about that. Linage 2 also sounds like a nice bet, though I will have to find out more about that too... and as for Everquest, I used to be in a whole guild full of re-rolled Everquesters, so I'm sure I can find out something from them ;)

Thanks again

May I please ask what your plans for the endgame are ?
I realise this is a f2p mmorpg, but from what I've read I really like the sound of it.

I would consider myself quite a hardcore raider from World of Warcraft though, I was wondering if you are designing "difficult" encounters for large groups (I read from your site that "dozens" of people are going to be needed to take down the most difficult monsters).

How much are you going to cater for people who want difficult endgame raids ? Are there going to be many "unique" encounters that will, say, take a few days of solid raiding to kill.

Thanks in advance :)

Hello there,

Firstly, I apologise in advance for my ignorance, but I haven't had the time to check through many other threads about this subject, bar "They dumbed down my WoW".

In a nutshell, I consider myself to be a fairly hardcore PvE player of World of Warcraft at the moment. However, as is told in that afformentioned thread, due to player base demands, it has been dumbed down significantly with the relase of the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion.

While I still enjoy the game, there is little for me to do at the moment (I do still raid and PvP, and play the game, and I believe I will continue to do so since I have many friends on there, and I will wait it out until the Ulduar content at least), but I feel like Blizzard have lost direction with the game.

So, to the point of this post: I was wondering if anyone could recommend to me any different games to try out that might satisfy my desire for endgame PvE.

Specifically I'm a fan of challenging and well-designed encounters (The kind of which were seen in Vanilla WoW and TBC - C'thun, Vashj, Kael'Thas, M'uru for those who know WoW) that are still there for a more "hardcore" community (if that doesnt sound too elitist).

A couple of names that kept popping up in the thread I read were EQ2 (which some of my friends on WoW used to play), Lotro (something I would consider, but I have never been a fan of that franchise), and Final Fantasy 11 (something which I have always considered, loving the offline games, but have never known enough about to make a decision).

Thanks in advance for any advice or help you can give me.
