Games i've played: RF online, and Anarchy online.

Also i don't like games with too long of a grind, unless lvls don't matter in pvp. Like in dungeon fighter.

I have been looking at Guild Wars for quite some time. Unfortunatley, when it was released I was caught up in the whole WoW thing and didn't bother to try it out. After that the expansions started to come and it seemed pointless to jump in to a game with two expansions out already. I still feel I'd like  to try it out though, but I have some questions.

I am more interested in PvP than PvE, although I like the PvE aspects of a game as well, is there a good mix with the both in GW?

Yes, there are lots of different kinds of pvp and alot of pve.

I am no longer a diehard hardcore player that can play 10+ hours a day, I have been trying out Darkfall since "release" since it was said to be THE new PvP game, although as soon as you want to do something you need quite alot of time to get anything done. After a hard day at work I just want to log in and wind down and actually achieve something in-game without putting 5 hours of gametime in it, is this possible in GW?

In GW most pvp and pve take about 30 mins to do except maybe for pvp where u have consectutive wins and once u win with a team u play with the same team again and again till u finally lose.

I understand GW is not very gear-centric, this is very good in my book. Although the best gear should be hard to get according to me, is it?

GW gear require nothing to wield, which means u can be lvl 1 and have the best gear in the game, The gear in GW simiply makes u look better or "cooler" it has no stats on it tho, u can add insigias on it to make it better like extra health or dmg and stuff.

Are there alot of players online at any given time? I am online at weird hours since I work the graveyard shift and I can't stand games where I PvP against the same 20-30 people over and over and over.

Theres alot of players online at once, u definetly wont play with the same players on the opposite team more than once, but u can play with the same players on the same team. U'll probably not find the players u want just by talking to people at the pvp outpost, thats y most players tend to join a guild and pvp with guildies.

I am pretty competitive by nature in everything I do. Are there competitive or semi-competitive guilds around that accept new players? All I need is someone to show me the ropes, while I learn the rest for myself, as I see this as a big part of any mmo. Would your guild accept me?

Most guilds dont require much like WoW if ur raiding u need to have this gear that gear, u'll probably just need to be lvl 20 which takes about 2 weeks.

What is the GW community like? I am not a very social person but in any mmo you need at least some social skills. Are there as many whiners and elitist as in WoW or is it a more mature community?

GW community is more mature than WoW, but there are alot of whiners chuck norris fans in GW, u probably wont meet them unless ur in a guild with them.

Anything else you think I should know before I order the box (the price on it is a steal by the way!)?

You should order the triple deal thing where u get all of the campahns that u get all them for $40 cheaper cause u'll probably want to buy them later since u can only get some of ur class skills from each campagn and u need a complete set to do well in pvp and pve

Thanks for your time

Tekton

No, there won't be enough buttons. In WoW most players has there entire screen filled up with skills, sure half of it we don't use, but every once in a while when the situation calls for it we do, and with 360, ps3, wii, their definetly won't be enough buttons to use skills.

ive been gone since about nov 24. and im wondering what makes wotlk so easy to gear up in? ill take easy gear all i like to do is kill people anyway.

Wotlk is easy because, it only takes 1-2 weeks from 70 to get to 80 if ur geared right playing about 2 hrs a day. Blizz also made the raids easier to complete, and dumbed down the game even more, such as making crit and spell the same thing.

WII can be better than playstation but certainly not XBOX hell no.

The PS3 is more powerfull then the 360, and the WII isnt better then the 360 or the PS3 imho.

The 360 is better than the PS3, 360 gets all the games ps3 gets and more, and its cheaper

Currently i only have a little bit in retribution, nothing permanent. I think tanking would be cool and useful with protection, but i dont know if ill be able to afford the gear when i need it, if they work in raids and other things, and if tanking is to diffucult for me to do. some advice would help... thanks

Well I personally disagree with the first replier of this post. I think posts like this could do some good for this site. Personally this is my break down of pallys for a trees and about tanking.

For Tanking/Prot tree- Pallies are great at 5man raids, they can easily take on trash mobs and hold aggro is extremely easier Due to AoE abilites) They do seem to have trouble with 25man raids when holding 1 monster. If you want to do more 25man raids might i recomend Warriors they are the kings when it come to 25man's. Dont go Druid because atm they are the worst tankers.

Best tankers in order *imo*
Paladin
Warrior
DK(frost)-Tied with warrior
Druid

This order is incorrect, paladins are the most popular tanks for instances, but not for raids. Mainly because there the only tank that can mutli aggro easily. In raids paladins are usuallys choosed over by all the other tanks, because the other tanks focus better on one target than pallys. It stil doesnt matter that much ,cause most guilds like to a tank of each class.

For Healing- Healadins are great in PvP (BG's) They have FoL which is very mana effecient and they also have high spell crit chance *more then most healers imo* They also have HL for big heals. They having a way higher survivability then any other healer in the BG's. For the arena they are okay, one of the best teams ive heard has been a paladin and a warrior. But normally in 2v2 its gonna be a druid(healer) and *insert another high armored class here* The dont have any HoT's only druids and priests have those. (Excluding FoL glyph which makes it a HoT)(fyi that glyph sucks) That means when they are healing they are static and can not move. However if you go Holy I dont recommend doing it for leveling bec they cant do any dmg under holy  (compared to REt or prot) (unless you grind dungeons) However if you look at the healing charts a priest and a druid will almost always out heal a paladin however palys live longer and can do multiple stuns while having Bubble/LoH while still being able to do decent dmg at lvl 80.

Best healers in order *imo*
PvP
Paladin
Druid
Priest
Shaman

this order is only for bgs.

2v2

druid

priest

shaman

paladin

3v3

pretty much the same as 2v2

5v5

shaman

paladin

druid

priest

PvE
Priest
Druids
Pallys-tied with druid
Shaman

Many people seem to think shamans are bad healers, which totally untrue. Because of chain heal it makes them a popular choice for raids, and mana tide totem, allows the shaman, and any other to almost never go oom in a raid.

For Ret- Retadins with recent patches have had buffs and also nerfs. Some people say that they have gotten nerfed to the ground *like dead is what they say* I disagree my brother tops DPS charts in 25mans and 5mans every time as a DPS ret pally. For leveling they are by far the best tree to go. They have high survivability and when your poperly geared you can dish out a lot of burst dmg very fast. When done right a Ret pally Can easily down 2 clothies and a DK/warrior no problem (might have to use bubble or LoH)

Any good clothie should be able to beat ret pallys especially a mage, speced right

Thats pretty much the run down of the pally in a very simple way for all the tree's.
P.S. I have a Holy pally I've Had experience in Tanking, and have learned a lot from my brother as a Ret Paladin (He's top Ret paladin on Alexstraza)

I really laugh, really, really hard at this. So this guy says this... "I have done it all man, I have raided pre BC, AQ40 and BWL" You can't tell me those raids are hard!

In EQ, please complete the Elemental Plains and Plane of Time and tell me WoW raids are hard. I am not saying some of them are not challenging, but they don't even compete with EQ's raids at all.

I know this is a rant/flame thread but whatever.

I like polls so here is another poll...

Also this thread pertains to people who have played both games.

Probably this thread or something similar has been made but oh well.. let the flames begin I guess =\

See EQ raids are surely harder than WoW's, but EQ requires you to stay on for hours and u had to be on 25hrs a week minium and people who played 20 hrs a week were considered leechers by the players that player 45 hrs a week working hard for there gear.

As a old WoW player thats played all of wow from pre bc to wotlk i have to say wotlk have made the game alot worse and the more serious adult gamers are getting seriously turned off. Some people like the new deathknight class, but most don't deathknights are extremely OP, and since there so OP, all the little kids are switching class cause they want to kick butt too. So now Bgs are filled with deathknights and everyone else thats not a deathknight is getting owned.

Its just as bad in pve, Blizzard seems to have dumbed down the game even more, now crit and spell crit are the same thing, same with spell hit and hit, and even healing done and dmg done. Because of this everyone is rolling on the same things in dungeons and getting less loot.

WoW might not die as quickly as you predicted, but it will die sometime in 2009 to 2010, if blizzard doesn't fix the game.

I think the only word i can use to describe what you said is "delusional". If you read WOW forums, there are as much QQing about mage being overpower in PvP as DK. If you actually look at class distribution numbers, DK is not that dominant.

Secondly, it does not matter what you think about the classes. Any talk about WOW will die in 2009 is silly. It just ADDED 500k subscribers after the WOLTK release (and oh, it does not even release to the whole world yet).

Mages are overpowered in bgs, where all the noobs are at. There only OP because they do so much dmg, and that there all fire speced, but in 1v1s most get there ass whooped being fire/ arcane spec.

Deathknights are overpowered everywhere, BGs, arena, ect.

Ok, im new to the game i was just wandering if there was a good build for pvp having factions only.

This forecasting has at least some BODY as apposed to the launched troll post of the Greyhooff alt post.

Since Wow has now 11.5 million players worldwide since Dec http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=355698

Since the basic Wow product even sold MORE new copies in 2008 than in 2007 to new players http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=355698

Since Wotlk hasn't even been released yet in China (wich is supposed to have 55% of the world market)

Since on http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1231435762/ref=sr_pg_1?ie=UTF8&rs=229575&bbn=229575&rh=n%3A468642%2Cn%3A229575&page=1

Wow has now 3 products (WotLK, sub cards, Wow Chest,) in the top 10 of all PC games (hourly updated)

And even today they launched new servers to their game .....

I can pretty much state for sure that there will be 12 million active PAYING subscribers in the first quarter of this year.

At least I got some references

:))

im sure this won't happen, yes sure wotlk will bring in lots of people, but wotlk is pretty the same old thing, and to me it's even worse than TBC.

Launching Deathknights was a horrible decision, by Blizzard, making the classes even more inbalanced than it was before. Because its so OP everyone is rerolling their class to deathknights and now half of all the people in a bg is a deathknight.

In Pve people are getting pissed, because everyone is now rolling on the same items since crit and spell crit is the same thing now, spell dmg and spell healing is the same thing 2, ect.

Sure alot of people joined, because of Wotlk, but many are finding out wotlk is just same old same old. And that its just not challegening enough.

To many people wotlk was a very big disappointment, it took about a week or 2 to get to lvl 80 playing around 20 hours a week, depending on whether u were geared or not in pve or pvp.

The only really good thing that came out of it was siege battles.

For those who might remember me, I predicted the rapid demise of Age of Conan back in June 2008, looking purely at the game mechanics and the nature of the game itself. This was at the same time review magazines were throwing around scores of 9/10 for AOC, but it was obvious the game would die from playing the game, which is how I make my predictions :)

I am a long time MMO player starting off in Ultima Online days, through L2, AO, EVE, EQ1 (but not 2) WoW, WAR and LOTRO.

Looking at the incentive structure of the current top MMOs by subscription numbers, these are my predictions for January-April 2009:

1. WoW: currently has the largest number of subs although this has already dropped down to around 9 million from a high of 11.x million. Around 6 million of the remaining 9 million subs is from the China/East Asia region, and these are likely to drop off the fastest as EU and US subs drop off. The reason for the drop will be a lack of elite PVE content and the migration of top-end guilds to one of the competitors, which the masses will then follow. The nature of the mmo market is such that a game can very rapidly drop in popularity as gamers are a fickle bunch. The demise of WoW is here, and it will be surprisingly swift (2-3 months with 500k subs lost in EU/US each month, much faster in china)

2. WAR: currently the 2nd largest mmo in subs, although a very high quality mmo its fortress endgame is currently broken (although its city sieges are not) making the #1 priority for Mythic to fix endgame fortress sieges. The success of this game depends on how fast and how well they can fix this part of the RVR endgame. although the PVE instances and the rest of the RVR experience are all top notch. WAR is the likely destination of all the current top mmo guilds and players from WoW and other games

3. EVE: not often mentioned but this mmo has carved out its niche and is holding steady, doing what it does in a large sandbox space environment that appeals to the hardcore sandbox PVP crowd (in space)

4. LOTRO: another niche PVE game, this one has been ticking along nicely with its new xpac but one can't help but feel it should have done better given the franchise

Other predictions:

a) Darkfall will be a disappointment, the budget is low and the game is very far from finished, and is nowhere near the level of polish of WoW/WAR/LOTRO

b) Aion will appeal to some of the old L2ers, but will likely not touch the mainstream (but will be a good mmo game for those who love the asian-styled grind mmos)

As a old WoW player thats played all of wow from pre bc to wotlk i have to say wotlk have made the game alot worse and the more serious adult gamers are getting seriously turned off.
