I think the only things that kind of bother me so far about the game are the words "instance" being so prevalent and the term PvP being pretty non-existent in the reviews and previews of the game.

I agree with whoever mentioned it, that heavy instance games just keep people from playing together in groups. Fine for a solo player, but then why are you playing an MMO if you only want to play solo anyway? Kinda defeats the purpose of playing with other people, doesn't it?

Pretty much the same with PvP. What's the point of playing with thousands of other people if you can't test your character against theirs? I know *I* for one don't want to play a game to "bunny bash" for months so I can claim I'm the best bunny-basher around. Wheee, look at me. I killed a cow.

The whiners crack me up.

If the game is released with problems they cry about it and raise all kinds of hell because "the game wasn't ready for release."

If the release date is pushed back they cry about the game being delayed.

Ignore the ridiculous simpering infants and make a good game. It's ready when it's ready. If you can't wait... find something else to do.

Definitely sounds interesting. I wonder if the Champions Online game will have the architect feature as well.

In fairness I should probably state that I know not everybody in DFO is a tool. I've seen some well written and constructive comments on several forums from some of these folks... some even helpful (dare I say carebear?) to others in the community.

HOWEVER, the game is heavily geared toward the overly competitive, arrogant, self important, snide and usually mouthy punks that we find in any PvP environment. I have no problem sending the ones I come across over to DFO to either get schooled and shown they are NOT as good as they think they are, or to rule over the others who thought they were so great. Let's face it, the game has always been about smack talking, backstabbing, ambushing and ganking. A tool's paradise.

I have no problem with having skills (got a few of my own), but I can't stomach jackholes who talk a big game. They aren't big enough to be bullies in real life so they flex their virtual muscles to make themselves feel better about their own insignificant lives. When I kill someone I bow or salute instead of laugh, dance on the corpse, slap, or taunt the person I killed. Honor is clearly not a part of DFO on any level, from gameplay to design to even simple dev posts and announcements.

To each their own I guess.

I *AM* sincere in wanting DFO to succeed, as I said. As long as the game is alive, I'll keep sending people over.

Don't forget the #1 rule of etiquette for DFO: don't ever say anything negative about Tasos, Aventurine or DFO. Don't point out the bugs or false promises, don't even post constructive criticism like the leaders of the largest guilds did in an honest effort to make the game better not too long ago. Tasos' response is basically "screw you", so why bother.

Every post I've seen that Tasos has made to date has been rude, condescending, belligerent, even spiteful... how can you expect the player base, or the forum fanbois who are drawn to it, to be any different. Come on, seriously.

Darkfall is the best thing to happen to the MMO industry as far as I'm concerned. Now whenever I run into some mouthy tool who thinks he's the god of PvP I tell him about Darkfall Online and how I think he'd LOVE the game. It's a win-win for everyone!

Darkfall gets more players to gank and backstab each other to their hearts' content and the rest of the MMOs get cleaned out of all the garbage we don't want clogging our chat windows with stupidity ("pwned!!!!!!11!1!1! u suxors!") and unfounded arrogance (because obviously if you're not using THEIR strategy, you must be doing it wrong despite the fact you're alive and they're dead).

May DFO grow, succeed and prosper, I say! And in the mean time, send more fodder over to them from the rest of the MMOs out there.

Everybody's happy. Everybody wins.

That looks really interesting. I may have to reactivate my account and take a look.

I can see two views on this coming up however... On the one hand it could be said that this gives some really interesting opportunities to people who like to create content or story lines. It allows for some creativity that up until now has been unheard of in an MMO.

On the other hand, I can see people griping about paying to do the work of the devs to create content for their game. Perhaps they could offer at least a free month for creating content that gets a 5 star rating. Anything less gets dropped after a couple months and the best arcs get to stay in the game. That would help keep the crappy arcs from wasting people's time.

At any rate, it sounds like it's taking off in a big way. Congrats to the devs and creative players.

I was seriously considering buying darkfall because I honestly like the idea of the game, but these authoritative posts just keep me from doing it. Maybe I will give free trial a chance if there's ever any.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

And what happened to the completely ready, no problems here, most amazing game in the world that Tasos and his fanbois hawked over and over again? Pay to Alpha test? No thanks. Sounds like between the inability to even purchase the game, the bugs and exploits all over the place, this game isn't even CLOSE to ready for market.

Damn shame.

Fallen Earth looks like a better option.

Excellent article. I especially like the idea of being able to "turn off" an effect but keep the powers/bonuses it gives as if your character just has those powers naturally.

Great idea. Looking forward to seeing more.

Eh, I'm not as turned off by the textures. Could be better, but still looks alright. I love the flying leap with the lightsaber. Makes me want to see what the combat will actually look like. I'm still hopeful and waiting to see more.

Thanks for the screenshots.

Reno

Looks interesting. We'll see how it actually plays out. I agree there may be better ways to work the weapon progression system, but this is how they want it for now. I look forward to seeing the game.

I love reviews that basically say "everything is GREAT... except for the things that suck." It's inevitable that we'll see worthless reviews (either fanboi or hater) for any new game out there. I lost track of who said it already above, but the only way to really know if you'll like the game is to try it. I agree.

There is never going to be a solid review of this game because they've built up so much hype over it that the fanbois will die before speaking a disparaging word against their precious new universe, and when the game inevitably doesn't live up to the unrealistic expectations that have been set the haters will jump all over it.

I never buy an MMO unless I have tried the 30 free period most games offer, or I see how it works when a friend has bought it and I look over their shoulder while they show me all the goodies it has. None of my friends have gotten it and I'm not holding my breath for a free trial period.

It's also been said before that watching the combat on the forums is more fun than the thought of playing the supposedly glorious and amazing PvP combat of the actual game. Have to agree there too. Kinda funny in a way. I believe that would be irony. :)

Reno

Getting back on topic... I was looking forward to CO until now. I don't see any reason to move from CoX. I might take a second look at DC, but CoX keeps improving an already good game. And on the topic of PvP... The constant grinding and bunny bashing quests in most MMOs get old quickly. PvP is what makes the game interesting and is the only real end game once you max level.

Man, I'm glad you all are still alive out there, after the initial pre order and all the helpful information I went back to forum to see what was coming next and no one there, just a message saying .....we working on it...wait ....whatever.  No information....tried news, no joy.    Let's get serious now, it would take one guy ...now im gonna think he will put some effort into it, 30 minutes to give an update on what's going on, when we can order or reason they can't expand until they get these bugs out, enough revenue, whaterver.   They instead just keep up all the old info and move on.
While I was waiting for some tidbit of information I went into the mortal online forum....they actually seem to be talking and putting out information.  It's a crazy concept, but I liked it.
We are the customer, I understand that they might have problems, but it would be in their advantage to keep us in the loop, because in the end they need us,  not the other way around.  Now I know the "right at any cost guys don't care, but a lot of us will.

Apparently you didn't hear the word on the street from the fanboi crowd... YOU need DARKFALL, not the other way around. Tasos has made it clear before you can either play his l33t game or not, he doesn't care. Well now Darkfall is so l33t you can't even play if you wanted to. Only Tasos can play. ;)

Truly laughing out loud at the hype the fanbois and Tasos have built up for this game, only to see it stumble on its first step. Time will tell (shortly) if it completely falls on its face or not.

Went from mildly interested in the game to now shaking my head in amusement. Somebody said it before... the forums for the game are more fun than the idea of the game itself. LOL

Great post.
Doesn't change the fact that their billing working properly should have been one of the FIRST things they made sure off. Not having a proper billing system that functions from day one, sends a BAD customer service message.
I for one am going to wait 6 months to see how this works out. I'm especially worrying about the conflicting reports about whether the game will be easy to hack. For a PVP-focused game THAT's a deal breaker.

Agreed. Not much sucks more than getting a game that cheaters are hacking for an advantage... oh, except the game not working at all that is.

Heh, heh... right behind ya brother.

I'm wondering if you've dabbled at all with the SWGEmu. I haven't logged onto it in a long time, but I hear they've come a LONG way in the past year. Close to being ready for an actual playable server for Pre-CU SWG.

Have any other SWG vets looked at SWGEmu? I'm definitely looking forward to it. SW:ToR looks completely different and should be fun for reasons of its own. As mentioned many times already, if you're looking for SWG or some kind of SWG2, forget it. New game, new style, new environment, new player base (to some degree). Let's enjoy this game for what it IS, instead of slamming it for what it isn't (just a request to some of the more vocal SWG vets out there... I understand, I loved the game too, but give this one a chance to be fun for you for new reasons).

And Hauken... look for me to be nearby giving you a nod of acknowledgement when we're trying to take down the same bounty. No offense if I get there first. ;)

Non force user. Preferably a hunter of force users... lord knows there will be enough of them to go around.

Not bad. We'll see how it all comes together.
If the graphics are as good as SWG were, the character progression is skill based instead of pigeon-holed classes, and there aren't hundreds of Jedi running around everywhere I'll probably play.

lol good as swgs graphics? swgs graphics fucking sucked badly the worsed among many mmos tbh and its going to be lvl and not a sandbox and no its not swg and its kotor where jedis are everywhere go read a bit before posting you fail kthxbye

ROFL. I can't help but laugh at someone who can't spell, uses no punctuation or capital letters essentially proving themselves only marginally literate telling anyone to "read a bit", or that they "fail". Hahaha Sorry... perhaps you only speak l33t. Let me translate for you. "pwned!" There ya go.

Now to speak to someone INTELLIGENT...

I can see what you are getting at. Its hard to accomplish this sort of individuality in a class based game. Classes will often start of very diverse and overtime they start melding aspects of each class into others.
What would be nice is if most MMOs would stop with the hard classes and move toward a more skill based system, something like a soft class where you could refine every aspect of your class so you are not a clone of every other player thats playing that class. Something along the lines of Anarchy Onlines system where every level gave you some base stat increases and the rest in spendable skill points to pick and choose what skills and abilities you wanted. Sure you would be a class such as a Fixer, but you might not have the same skills as the other Fixer in the group or the ability to use the same Nanos (spells) as they can.
That or move to a fully classless/skillbased system.

What I would like to see is perhaps a combination of the two, and I don't mean just specifically in this game but in general for MMORPGs. Why couldn't you have a skill based system, but if you worked within a "class", essentially a profession of sorts, you would get bonuses to certain skills that fall within that class? Or perhaps you would level those skills faster because you are following a certain path.

For example, say a game calls for a detective character. It would have a bonus of some kind to the pistol skill, perhaps driving, search and interrogation. But they would have to progress normally at fighting fires, pilot, or using a bazooka. A soldier character would have bonuses to military weapons, perhaps demolitions, and other skills pertaining to warfare, but would progress normally at furniture building, electronics, or landscaping.

In other words, give people an incentive to follow a class or profession but give them the leeway to progress in the skills they want if they so choose.

What I liked about SWG's skill system (and the main reason I liked the game) was that the professions didn't determine what skills you had. Your skills, and skills' levels, determined what class you could become. It was more realistic and far more liberating.

Bioware has created some really well done games. I'm still optimistic that this one will be entertaining and function well. But I don't think this will be "THE game" for me. Should be fun though. Always looking forward to seeing more of it.

Thanks for the screenshots.
