Hm...I enjoyed GW1 (a lot) but the plans re graphics of GW are perhaps the only thing that could turn me off the game.  I'm confident in Anet's ability to release a quality product without too many bugs.

From the preview vids, the graphics look to be of very high technical quality, but the artistic style is not really to my tatse.

I mean.....personally I'm happy with the animations for necro and ele, but find that too much when looking at warriors and rangers - to me it feels overdone.

I guess I just prefer low fantasy to high fantasy. Re the races, it's similar - I have a feeling that I may end up preferring the "humans only" set up of GW1 to seeing Asura, Charr etc. also looking for groups.

That said, I still plan to get a CE when the game starts and play a mesmer (again), assuming that the class is in the game (which I'm pretty sure it will be).

I guess I'll suck it and see, but am cautiously optimistic.

Stopped reading at REVENUE (aka sales) compared to LAST quarter was down 500. Digital download and virtual item sales would have boosted that this quarter.  1.5 TUSD loss.  Never change Funcom, never change.

As far as I know, no Virtual Items were sold first quarter 2010 by Funcom (for AoC at least, not sure about AO) Expansion sales started after 31st  of march.

The first quarter ended may 21st so any sales in the last 3 months up until maybe may 18-20 would be included....so these that where sold on release day of the expansion and prior.  http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=216584 . Funcom's quarters are not calander year so it isn't like January-april is Q1, it is fiscal so past three months is Q1.

No -  it's a preliminary statement to 31-Mar-10.  It's quite clearly stated in the notes to the interim report under 2 - Basis for preparation - check page 5 of the document.

I've just never heard anyone say Conan stories are crap. The are considered to be timeless classics in their genre. Hell, they CREATED that genre. I've read them all and they are really really good.

By the way.. It's spelled Dostoyevsky. He's good too. But next time you take difficult names from Wikipedia I suggest you use copy-paste

Agreed that the Conan stories are good.

However....before you criticise someone for how they spell a name and suggest that they check wikipedia, it would be wise for you to check the wiki.  If you had checked the wiki yourself, you would have found :

"Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky (Russian: ????? ??????????? ????????????, F?dor Mihajlovi? Dosto'evskij, pronounced [?f?od?r m???xajl?v??t? d?st??j?fsk??j] ( listen),[4] sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, Dostoievsky, Dostojevskij, Dostoevski or Dostoevskii ..."  (taken from the wiki)

Granted that the poster's exact transliteration isn't listed there, but it's hardly correct that there is one (& only one) correct way of doing so.  Transliteration into different scripts, although there are norms, can vary greatly.

On the original topic re launch dates, I'd guess at around March 2010 ,although that's just a guess.  I really hope that they release it after adequate testingand can avoid a rushed release to beat another game's release date.  The last thing AoC needs is an expansion that's rushed out of the door before it's ready...

Edit : Bah, the board screwed up the Cyrillic characters.  Ah well, the original text is on the wiki in any case.

Is there a dumbest poll of the year competition that I missed? Of course Conan will shut down. The only question is when. People who answered "NO" probably think Conan will be around until the end of time?

Admittedly the poll is poorly phrased, but the difference will be in how literally people interpret the question.  A literal interpretation of the question would be to take the OP to be asking whether or not AoC will last forever...and no, of course not...that would be an odd view to adopt.  Interpreting it in such a literal way (as you seem to think possible in your post) renders the question virtually meaningless unless, somehow, you seriously think there is a question about whether or not AoC will last forever.

A more normal interpretation of this kind of question would take a timescale to be implicit, and to take it to mean "Do you think that AoC will be shutdown or go F2P in the forseeable future?", which I personally would take to be something like the next couple of years or thereabouts.

I'm pretty confident that AoC won't shut down within the next couple of years, and I think it unlikely that it would switch to an F2P model over the same kind of timescale.  However, re the last point, it all depends on how many people AoC can attract back - it's a money thing there;  I don't think it impossible that it will, but am happy to adopt a wait and see approach in the mean-time, as I'm happy to continue paying for AoC at the moment (though would like more content soon).

A couple of people in my (PvE-server) guild have returned, and the main things they said they objected to in the past were the vast number of bugs that AoC used to have, and the lack of endgame content.  End-game content is of course still quite limited (IMO), but the prospect that the Iron Tower will be released soon-ish is tantalising some of my friends.

I've heard a rumour that the expansion will be released in the shortish term (next couple of months), although I personally find this hard to believe.

Thre are 31 servers, some low some high, most medium. Lets remove the Australian servers, because they are merging. So tha leaves 29 servers.

If you take 5k subs per server, which is very low, then they have at least 155k subs. This can scale upwards to 10k subs per server, which would equal to 290k subs.

But think what you will. I know 2 of my RL friends still play and are having fun with lots of other players, thats enough proof for me that the game is still alive.

There aren't 31 servers left....there may have been some time ago, but there have been several rounds of server transfers since then.

Looking at Warhammer's own server forums, there are currently 14 servers......8 of which are source servers, and only 6 of which are destination servers.

Source servers are - Ironfist, Vortex, Monolith, Magnus, Skull Throne, Darklands, Ironclaw, Praag

The remaining destination servers are - Badlands, Dark Crag, Gorfang, Iron Rock, Phoenix Throne, Volkmar

This suggests to me that the (current) aim is to reduce the number of active servers to 6, which doesn't bode well.  One day, some servers may re-open or, being pessimistic, there may be further server merges.

Edit : Glad to hear your friends are having fun - that's what counts at the end of the day.  The game is still alive at the moment, which is good, but the prognosis looks poor to me.

Edit2: @Metzli - D'oh!  Yes, I did.

I'm looking forward to the expansion as well, and am very pleased to see that FC won't be increasing the level cap, although the new skills that can be opened up are a form of character progression post-80.

I'm also hoping that FC don't introduce any new classes - they need to ensure that the current classes are balanced first IMO.

As for the classes that Khitani characters will be able to take, my guess would be that they will, like the other 3 races, be unable to take a class from one archetype, and my guess for that would be the priest archetype.

Although the Khitani are noted mages, I'm not sure that having necromancers would fit with Khitai.  Stygia is a nation obsessed with death, possibly justifying keeping necromancers Stygian-only.

As regards the soldier and rogue archetypes, I'd guess that they will allow players free access to all of the classes under them for Khitani characters.

Although the tiger mounts seem like  a step towards high fantasy, I'm hoping that the magical side of things is kept low-key to maintain some notion of low-fantasy.

I've just been having a look over on testlive, and crafted items are now much more useful.  Default crafted items now rank somewhere between world drop blues and dungeon blues.  The "City" recipes are a bit better, and Culture recipes are better yet, with culture items being near to raid items in power.  So there is now definitely a place for crafters to have a shot at making good money, as long as they can get the recipes of course.  The most profitable would probably be armoursmithing, followed by weaponsmithing.

As far as the gemcrafting system, it's changed significantly, but I'm still not sure how much depth it actually offers.  Each crafted item now has either 1 or 2 coloured slots.  One can only put into the socket gems which are of the same colour as the socket.

Each gem colour plays a different role now, for example, blue has many mage-oriented benefits plus the abilities to resist same.  Green  is focussed on melee dps roles, particularly on the assassin or the ranger, and white is defensive, so is ideal for a tanking role.  There are some strange inclusions in colours (e.g. + combat rating (electrical) in green), but these may be errors.

Gem cuts are no longer random, and you can rely on what you're going to get.  Whilst the colour of the gem determines the effect type, the level of the item determines how powerful the effect of the gem will be.  E.g. socketing a white gem with the effect of increasing protection vs elemental stuff into a L80 item will make that gem offer much more protection than if socketed into a L60.

The system seems intended to allow people to have some choice, although this is constrained as to type, as well as by the fact that there are now a lot less slots to play with.

Sadly, I have no idea how it compares to LoTRO.

Patch 1.04 is already out and did not include DX 10 features.

FC have said that DX10 will be in some time before patch 1.05 (the big itemisation patch) goes live.

Although DX10 has not yet gone live, I have noticed some new graphical improvements to a few things even for DX9 users, such as the underwater effects.

I can't really speak for the non-English servers, but Crom PvE is one of the busiest servers in Europe, second only to Fury PvP I think.

Hyrkania (RP-PvE), where I am, is really pretty quiet, although the community here is great!  Hyrkania population tends to be about 140-150 online (approx) at one time these days when I last looked.  Hyrk population is picking up a bit both from immigrants from other servers, and to some extent also from new subs.  RP is to be found, but it mostly happens in guilds or in places like "The Green Man" and "The Serpents Head".  If RP is your thing, Hyrk would suit you, but not if your main concern is high population.

Why not just create a character on Crom, run them through to Tortage city @ L5 and have a look at the global chat, check out auction house activity, and do some player searches?  That should give you some idea of what to expect.

I don't have a hard time with people not experiecing many players around at some times of the day. I feel the title is misleading, we know it is one specific server the OP talks about (if at all), therefore knowlege is limited to just that one server and not for the whole game across 25+ servers.

I never said all the servers are empty. Like you said, I am talking about one EU server, Aquilonia.

However Aquilonia is supposed to be the 2nd most popular EU server which I find really strange since it seems like medium population server during peak hours and extremely low during off-peak.

They say Fury is the most popular EU server but I hear it's infested with immature kids.

I'm curious where you get the idea that Aquilonia is the 2nd most busy EU server.  I can't speak so much for the non-UK servers, but from what I've seen, Crom (PvE) is much busier than Aquilonia (RP-PvP).  Amongst the servers that I've looked at, I'd say that Fury (PvP) is probably the most busy, followed reasonably closely by Crom (PvE).  Some way behind would come Aquilonia (RP-PvP), and then trailing in the rear, Hyrkania (RP-PvE).  I have no idea about the population of the Fresh Start servers either.

As for Fury, yeah......much of the behaviour in global chat there seemed pretty immature to me as well.

I made the above estimates simply by creating (or already having) a character on each of the above servers and simply looking at things such as numbers of L70-80s online by class.  I also looked at auction house activity as another way of looking at the level of activity and found that this gave me similar results to the order posted above.

Admittedly, my estimates for the order of relative population levels is rather finger-in-the-wind, but I hope it's reasonably accurate all the same.

5 of my guild did the slaughterhouse cellar yesterday eve, and at least 3 of us, including me, got a Bind-on-pickup blue item from the ghost boss that is not part of the world loot tables.  Mine was  a heavy armour chestpiece that I thought looked quite good (and rather Roman) - was just a shame that it dropped for my demo!

We also managed to get some interesting looking greens, in particular some L80 light chainmail classed as medium armour.

Thanks for a thorough, easy-to-understand and concise review of the different aspects of Darkfall.

I think, based on this, that' I'll hold off getting it until there have been some improvements and/or more favourable reviews.  Hopefully it's still good enough to give some people the PvP sandbox experience that they're looking for but, as for me, I'll continue pinning my sandbox hopes to Fallen Earth.

You forgot the pvp-gear  really nice looking gear.

Ah damn!  Yeah, that's true, especially with some sets (I love the bear shaman PvP set).

However, getting to a PvP rank where one can wear the main parts of these sets of armour does take a lot of time, I'm told.....and will take a heck of a lot longer for me, as I'm on a PvE server.

Amendment to earlier post : Forgot to add - Patch 1.04 should be going live next week, although I'm guessing that patch 1.05 will need to stay on Testlive for quite some time after 1.04 is out.

Not yet, re making the item stats more important.  This is scheduled to arrive in patch 1.05.  The next patch due is 1.04, which should be hitting the live servers.

As for the look, well, there is a bit more variety, but it's slow in coming.  To get most of the interesting or different armour skins you need to go to an area with elite mobs for the most part, so many of the nice skins are hard to get for solo players.  If you like group play, however, there is a reasonable degree of variety.

That said, there are now recipes in the game allowing more interesting pieces of armour to be made, but these will generally be costly as the raw materials used to make them aren't cheap.

This refers to both the "city" and "culture" armours, by the way.

As an aside, if you have light or medium armour, there seems to be less variety in the look that a solo player can lay their hands on, which is kinda unfortunate for barbs, rangers and priests.  However, at low levels, there are the "Nemedian" and "Vanir" items (all green) which can offer a little variety.

If itemisation is what matters to you, then the best time for you to come back might be around patch 1.05 when the items (and system as a whole) are getting an overhaul.  If you do decide to come back, I'd also suggest that., to get the more interesting loot, you need to team up with others and enter the instanced dungeons.

I figured Hyrkania was the EU PvE server that had a decent population pre merge and because it did not have any other servers merged into it.

But here here in N America for example they merged 12 PvE servers into 2, Set and Wiccana.

No - Hyrkania is the RP-PvE server, and was not merged with any other server.  This was not because its population was decent, but because it was the only server with the RP-PvE tag.  There were debates in the forums for a while about whether or not Hyrkania should merge into another server, and which way...i.e. PvE or RP-PvP.  Funcom took a "wait and see" approach I think, hoping that server transfers would boost the population.   In spite of the recent increase in population however, Hyrk is still (& always was), the quietest of all the English servers (& is probably one of the quietest servers worldwide, imo).  The community is very pleasant, however.

I think they merged all (non-RP) English PvE servers into Crom (which is the server that did have a decent pop), and merged Corinthia RP-PvP into Aquilonia RP-PvP.

In November, some of the few people who were around sometimes openly speculated in chat (think it was the annoyingly bugged OOC channel back then) whether or not the population would drop to unsustainably low levels on Hyrk.

Edit : Aagh!  You did a ninja edit, Jackdog.  I think one reason for the greater consolidation of the American servers is the greater commonality of language.  Here in the EU we have PvE , RP-PvP & PvP servers for the French, German and Spanish communities too (don't know how it panned out in the US).  However, this still allows for the possibility that there may be a marked difference in retention rates between the EU & US, but I just don't know re that point.

Anecdotally, my server (Hyrkania) has seen an increase in people trying AoC for the 1st time, and global chat is much busier than it used to be.  As an aside, Hyrkania server was not merged with any other servers, but was a very quiet server - in November, I was seeing 80 people or so on line at one time on the weekends, for example.

Sure, some of the increase is down to character transfers (most notably from Aquilonia), but there are also plenty of newbie questions being asked about the early quests in global chat, which suggests that there are several first-timers playing now.  Some of my guild (who had left some time ago) have now returned, and seem to be enjoying the game.

The mood in my guild had been pretty bleak in early December, with very few of us online at one time, but that has changed very much for the better now, and is a lot more positive, with several of our old members coming back to the game and seemingly having a blast;  we used to have 2 or 3 members on a night, and we're now reliably up to 6.  The actual numbers aren't huge, granted, but the mood on the server as a whole does seem to have changed for the better, and the place certainly seems a lot more active.

And before anyone says it, sure, I know this is but one server, and is purely anecdotal.  I'll have a look at server pop this eve, however,  and see how it's looking.  I'll warrant it'll be much better than the 80 or so people on line that Hyrk was seeing around November on a weekend.

I am still waiting for someone to explain why the XFire numbers went up by 50% since December yet the web traffic has remained flat except for a bump around the time of Christmas vacation and another bump around the time of the server merges

www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/ageofconan.com

artificially inflated XFire numbers anyone?

When comparing LoTRO's to AoC's  web traffic on a six month chart you can see where LoTRO has remained pretty steady with a bump around the time of Moria's release while AoC's web traffic  is steadily declining

www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/ageofconan.com

Can't speak for anyone else of course, but I don't find the main ageofconan.com site very useful.  I'm a keen player of the game, but can't really think of any reason why I'd go to the main site.  If I want news or class discussion or whatever I prefer to visit the official forums.

Does that stat for ageofconan.com actually include the stats for forum accesses as well?  When I look at Alexa for the eu forums, the only data I can get is for the link you supplied, so would be interested to know how Alexa takes into account the forum pages.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We are also working on Free Trials pretty soon here too.

Excellent news!  I suppose this means that the "win-back" campaign will start soon.

However, for the good of AoC, I hope that the free trials don't start too soon, as launching this too early could lead returners to think that little has changed.

As a great many people have mentioned, itemisation is a big issue.  For many, class balance is also an issue (e.g.ToS being OP, DTs needing some love, HoX being Avatar-focussed & many others.)

For my money, I'm wondering if the free trials should only come after the system revamp (in 1.05 perhaps?), as that will, from my understanding, have a huge effect on item stats & gems and will allow FC to (finally) get on with class balancing in a serious way.

My guess would be that the free trials will launch after the stats revamp, but perhaps within a month before the launch of the Poor Quarter.  That way, returnees would see content being added whilst they're playing, creating a nice carrot to make them want to subscribe.

Another reason I did not care much for AoC was the loot tables, they are horrible. LvL 50 daggers dropping off lvl 5 mobs in the starter area? Give me a break ok..

You're criticising the wrong thing here.  The daggers (or whatever) that drop in that area aren't L50  - all it means that the class you happen to be playing can't use those daggers until L50.  This is a common complaint re crossbows for many classes, fwiw.

So....issue with the loot tables?  No.

Issue with the tooltips and clarity, though?  Quite possibly.

Well, I'm still playing and enjoying the game, but a good number of friends have left, which I'll summarise -

Friend 1 - assassin - left because of bugs (incl. problems with hiding).  Went to War, but not so pleased there either.

Friend 2 - left because of lack of content, but was difficult to make out through his ranting about not getting a particular piece of armour to drop :/

Friend 3 - left because of the break up of a relationship, so out-of-game issues

Friend 4 - left due to getting messed around with billing and issues surrounding DirectX9 update

Friends 5&6 - left because of issues surrounding the update of DirectX9.  They have said they may return one day.

Friend 7 - Left because of lack of players on the server, and didn't want to play a single player game

Friend 8 - avid RPer - think he left because of the lowish number of people to have RP fun with, including the departure of friend 4

Friend 9 - Explicitly stated it was due to bugs, but his guildmaster had been a bit of an ass earlier, so this may have contributed.

Friend 10 - Left fantasy MMOs altogether and is waiting on The Old Republic and Fallen Earth.

Interestingly, a couple of friends have also returned following an earlier departure.  They both said that they left, fully intending to return later when the bugs were ironed out....so put that down as technical (resolved)

I still have hopes that players 1, 5&6 will return, but we'll see....
