Why pre-trammel UO failed, and the similarities to DF
General Discussion « Darkfall 12/28/08 9:38:23 AM
Originally posted by harmonica I disagree. Well that's your opinion you're entitled to one.Opinions are like noses, everybody has one. Skill is a learned practice. Something you have to learn in order to be good at it. Skill and talent are not the same (unless you count having a knack for learning quickly as a talent). I think that videogames DO involve skill. If not, why are some people much better at certain games than others? It's because they took the time to learn. Talent and skill are not the same, yes, can you be both or either of those whilst playing guitar? Yes! Driving a car?Yes! Playing chess?Yes!!! Does it take any skill or talent to play a video game? Sadly no! Proof? Grab a 10 year old kid and place it behind a computer screen with any game of your choice mmo or otherwise and within 1 1/2 hour tops the kid will figure out the game system but place the same kid behind a wheel, playing a complete song on the guitar or at a chess board and it's gonna take a bit more than 1 1/2 hour to learn those right talented or not. Is being good at a game something to admire? Probably not, but it is still a skill. You're half right there.. In UO, you did have to be skilled at the game. You could have 10 people, give them all the same stats and equipment and make them all fight - the most skilled guy would win. Hell, 1 skilled guy vs 9 not-so-skilled guys could win. That was what made UO great. It was based on your knowledge/ability to play the game and not your class/race/level/uber-magic-wand-of-carebear. Sounds like skill to me. Sounds to me more like-the guy that could press the mouse button the fastest whilst not staying at the same spot while he was doing that would win- this hardly sounds like skill to me. 1 skilled guy vs 9 non skilled guys win?????? Chess and UO are both games. Whether digital or otherwise - the person who is able to anticipate his opponent's moves faster and more accurately usually wins. Yes they are both games but only one of them has 1)a world championship 2)a world champion 3) can look good in your CV 4)exists in both RL and VL 5) has professionals (people that make money playing it) at it. Besides chess isn't a game of speed and accuracy it's a game of patience and yes predicting your opponents next move, personally i get a headache after only an hour of playing chess. I hope Darkfall will be the same. I hope not, getting a headache after an hour of playing doesn't sound too appealing to me

RP will not be uncommon, RPers love sandbox games and I'm sure finding a clan that RPs and controls a player city will not be hard, and it'll be fun since the whole city will be full of RPers as well. There are also a lot of lore play guilds and RP guilds that plan on doing PvP and other stuff too. There fixed it for ya As for the "RP community will not be uncommon" i've been part of Forumfall for roughly a year or so and i can say that i was more impressed with the content of my handkerchief the last time i blew my nose than with what dwells in that place. So here www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/217136 this should give you an idea what you're up against , hell , feel free to go crazy and search it yourself more before you stick your head in the wolf den. Just don't say that nobody gave you the "heads up"....... Darkfall has the potential of a great game but it lacks the community that will support it correctly, among other things.... |

Time that with the release of new, 3D Graphic MMORPGs coming out and of course people would move on to new things. In UO, the chances of being PK'd were not that high unless you were a friggin idiot. There were places where PKs loved to hang out and the only reason to go there would be to fight them. This was cool.
UO(pre-UOR) = Normal Mode The only people who are "good" at the new MMOs are people who have no lives and can spend 24/hrs a day leveling and getting new items. Darkfall won't have to be a huge success for me to enjoy it. With the hype it has, it will have at least enough subscribers for people like me to have fun (hoping its as good as UO anyway). Oh boy i hope it works for Darkfall then cuz that's the central idea the game is built around..... |

It DOESN'T take any skill though in order to play a video-game mmo or otherwise, if it did we wouldn't have anymore Free To Play and Pay to Play, we would have Free To Play and Payed To Play. |

Well, i can't tell much about the game since little is actually known about it, except, if you're an rper you're bound to enjoy the community of this game...............................not |

[Contest]1 Beta kay - to all MMORPGITALIA users -

You not informed. MMORPGItalia.it got more keys. The Admin of MMORPGItalia.it however - who don't disqualified himself by asking unfair questions recently in an interview - asked nicely Aventurine if it would be possible to use 1 of those for a site contest..in a random way...and because he asked nice he got a pleasent answer.. MMORPG.com probably missed the chance to put nice questions and to be helpful for the DF Community here and instead wasted their questions with wording like -vaporware- for example... got my point now ?
OMG... ROFLMAO Who the hell we are to judge holy mighty Tasos and his God-send game up above. You got serious, very serious issues...go get some help. I mean it! Smart marketing says try to win over the naysayers, but apparently whatever internet college Tasos graduated from didnt teach that in Marketing 101.
I am assuming I missed the sarcasm here. Why for the love of God would they want to win over people who are completely outside of thier demographic. They are not making a game for "Every" MMO player type, they are making the game for a specific group of people.
That is like an butcher shop worrying about vegans. The vegans are never going to buy anything from their store so why should they put out ad's to try and attract them to a butcher shop? Would you pls ,oh pls, direct me to a link where it shows Tasos or anyone of the Aventurine's employees saying more or less what I highlighted in nice pink letters and YOU just claimed?Pretty pls?!?!?!?? I'm only asking cuz the only people that i ever saw using those words or similar ones so far are from the "fans" of the site so far and every time i submitted this question they strangely enough went silent...... And if you are gonna start using metaphors to make a point try to make more accurate ones "butcher shop and vagans???"

i don't know about the rest of the bosses you mentioned but when it comes to Baium and Ant Queen from L2 didn't they spawn INSIDE a lair of some sort and there where only certain amount of people allowed inside for a very specific amount of time (X times per week and only after finishing some quest and granted pass by the GK of that place) or at least that's how i remember it last time i played........But that is not my concern really, my concern is like in L2 as in other games fighting dungeon mobs was a bit more of a task than fighting them out in the open, since the dungeon mobs are significantly stronger, have more life and seem to be crammed in this fairly small space that held x2 or x3 sometimes mobs it would have normally out in the open so my question is: How the hell is one or even more groups gonna fight their way through a dungeon filled with those things using the DF "revolutionary" battle system??? I mean it's one thing auto aiming a mob and using aoe skills that's only affecting mobs (the games mechanics that are so frowned upon by the DF community) in a small space and a completely different thing trying to swing your weapon alongside with your 5-8(?) party members in a confined space to an equal (at best) maybe more (at worst) amount of mobs and not only have to worry about the blows from mobs but also "friendly fire" and of course aoe skills would be out of the question not to mention the collision factorof the game........ note: there are no classes in DF hence no buffers or healers only self heal and self buff that quote: "doesn't last long"!!!! It would be "interesting"(for a lack of better euphemism) to watch a group like that try to make their way through a mob infested dungeon...... |

same as in Oblivion (and the devs said it's like it) the only good ranged attacks did were the 1 maybe 2 shots from sneak position before the enemy actually got close to you and then you had to switch to melee, the only thing you needed to win in that game was a good tank class the rest was just for support.....Now if you're hidding or in a hard to reach spot maybe you'll get a chance to fire a couple more arrows or spells before the enemy reaches you, maybe they'll hit maybe they won't but it all comes down to hand to hand combat eventually, so hand to hand > only ranged ,but that's my opinion.. |
