And would you feel this dismissive if the majority of those reviews were positive and praising of TOR?

I'll put $20 on "No, you wouldn't". You'd be affirming them as "valid opinions".

I'd bet a further $20 that every person in this thread slamming the negative reviews and launching ad-hominems at the reviewers for daring to not like TOR and, worse, demonstrating the unmitigated audacity to actually say so, would be praising and holding up those reviews as "proof of how awesome TOR is" if they were positive.

$100 says I would win both of those bets.

Honestly, the responses/reactions of some people in this thread are just as hysterical, biased and predictable as the most critical of those on Metacritic. It doesn't matter what they're saying, how much or how little they've played or what they do and don't like about the game. All they have to do is criticize it and that's it... they're ripped to shreds without a second thought.

Why are some of you people so absolutely engraged when someone expresses a dislike for something you enjoy? Why all the intolerance and hostility toward a differing opinion? Are some of you so insecure in your own point-of-view, that you feel you have to tar, feather and rip apart any who doesn't share it?

Seriously. They're just opinions, folks.

Yeah seriously, don't understand why people are so upset about someone else not liking the game you like. They have the right to their opinion just like you have the right to yours.

Metacritic is after all a bunch of non-professional reviews which means they are mostly subjective opinions. If you can't stand that then dont look at the site.

So I can choose to trust an average based on the subjective opinion of hundreds of people - or those that are influenced by money and professional relations with the game creators (professional reviews).

I'll take the user reviews thanks - case in point Dragon Age 2.

The 10 ratings are just as ridiculous as the 1-3 ratings.  Looks like it's balancing out to be a fairly accurate score representation of the game, at least in my opinion.

are you guys complaining that you care able to do quests without a crowd.

each area has multiple instances to hold 100 players. that way your not getting 20 people questing in the same spot.

I'll take the 20 people thanks.

One of these Ms in MMOs points us to massive.

By massive, it is meant as a massive amount of players.

So where are you all ?

Where is the massive populated launch festivities in all the cantinas over the universe ?

We have confirmed millions of players, we have FULL servers but when you join in, you barely see more then 5 players at one place.

So, where is the crowd ?

That's because of the stupid zoning they are doing throughout the game

Whatever stance you want to take on SWTOR, ok cool, but can we at least keep it somewhat objective and not laughable?  I saw this critic review on metacriic from Ausgamers for a 95.  Was curious to look at it, so went on over to it and had to laugh when i saw this statement heading up the review.

"Easily the most graphically impressive MMO to date!"

....................  yeah...... EASILY..........O.o

You can read the full review here if you want:

http://www.ausgamers.com/games/star-wars-the-old-republic/review/

Let's be honest here, yes the scores of 0, 1, 2, stuff like that are ridiculous.  But in my opinion it's just as ridiculous when I see a bunch of 10's in a row.  Seriously?  A 10 is basically flawless, exceptional in every aspect.  That, SWTOR, is not.  But neither is it crap enough to warrant anything under a 4 in my opinion.  Personally I give 6 or 7

I voted 61-70.  I agree that the votes on meta critic are silly - but it goes both ways.  Anything 3 and under is ridiculous, but to me so is it when I see a bunch of 10's.

NO clue what's been said in the previous 17 pages, but really, for most games, the user reviews on Metacritic are absolute rubbish.  I am pretty sure somewhere there are people who get paid a miniscule amount to write bs reviews on that site.  I am not a huge fan of the game, but even I can see it's value.  I honestly could not understand how a sane person would give this game a zero.

Just click on the some of the names of people who gave zeros or low scores.  Most profiles will only show  one review, and it's usually the game they are trashing.  Just look if you don't beleive me.  Take a look at this guy:  http://www.metacritic.com/user/TimedParadox  He gave Mincraft a zero?  Really?  I bet maybe 3/4 of those reviews are by people who posted about one game, in this case SWTOR.  Now, the same could also be said for some of those 10's.  You will see they only have one review.  I mean, do people really register for a site, just to post one review about  one game?  The game is really that bad that they use their time to bother with that?  No, most of it just bs.

I mean look at this guy's profile, he gave Skyim and Minecraft both a zero, but he gave some console only game I've never heard of a 9?  http://www.metacritic.com/user/ViralKillsBrain

The same can be said for many of the positive reviews.........

Thank god for user reviews actually - the joke that was Dragon Age 2 still got a great CRITICS review on metacritic but the user reviews actually told the real tale.

A lot of the people posting on metacritic only have one review, and that's for SW:TOR. If that's not trolling I don't know what is.

Umm...there are people from both camps doing this.   Not just the negative posters...but positive posters as well.  Doesn't matter, in the end it balances out.  If the fans keep giving the game 10's the detractors will keep giving it 0's and it'll get the score it deserves - a 5 or a 6 at best.

Yep, and that's where it is right now, just a little over 5

And of those people who criticize it, it is virtually the same complaint.  It is a WoW clone which the game isn't.  I missed the part in WoW where conversations with quest NPCs lead to different results, or space combat, or many of the other things that are a part of SW:TOR that don't resemble anything in other MMOs.

It's not a wow clone - it's a theme park clone.  You can add a few diferent cherries on top just like RIFT did with rifts, but ultimately it's the same ole sundae.  People are getting more and more tired of it.

lol WOW the fanboi excuses are funny.  It's a conspiracy!  User reviews mean nothing!  They shouldn't have a score on launch day!  etc etc.

Whatever...... I will agree that a bunch of 0's and 1's are a little silly, I gave it a 5.  But the game is the definition of mediocrity after the story.  I think a lot of the low scores are because people are angry about how underwhelming the game actually is.

Wait, there aren't several different starting zones and multple ensuing quest paths?

not really.. well if several you mean 4 then yes and besides your main class quests all the side quests are the same.. unfortunatly the starter planets aren't very interesting to want to actually play through them multiple times

Nar Shad is one of the most painful starting areas I've ever experienced.......

First of I would like to say that what Bioware has produced is not bad. It is a solid game with responsive controls, good UI, well done gfx and sound, interesting storylines etc but every time when I think of this game I feel this game could have been so much more.

Come on now..... good UI?  Yeah I love how I can't move a single window or customize anything.  Also love sifting through the mission log every time I want to get to my codex, or similar examples.

Imagine for example looking up and seeing an X-Wing fly through the sky and you would know that this ship is controlled by another person. Then imagine the same X-Wing going into space and docking with a nebulon frigate (name?), which is owned by a mega player run corporation.

In that ship you would have real quarters, no instanced, which player could own and have other visit. You can continue with this thought experiment but I feel, well I know, that Bioware did not at all tried to re-create the SW universe in an MMORPG but just focus on ground combat, instances etc.

Really dont understand why companies aren't thinking big when they have such an IP on their hands. It was similar with Star Trek Online, a stupid space shooter instead of trying to create a persistant Star Trek World which can be about so much more than just instanced combat.

For example, what if Bioware took all the money they spent on voice acting and instead tried to create an interesting persistant world. I for one think the game would be much better as a result, a much better MMORPG that is. After all, what do I care about voice acting? I can watch a real movie if I want some acting.

They went the safe route in pretty much every way because they are trying to maximize profits.  They saw WOW succeed with this formula, so they are following it in almost every way.  It's really that simple.  Of course it could have been more, there are so many features / aspects of this game that are mediocre or "just good enough" it's insulting to call it a 2012 MMO.  But what can you do?

Every time I bring up the game to anyone in chat anywhere on the net but mostly in other mmos asking if people are getting there copys tomarrow all I really get are everyones dislike for the game.  What the heck gives, where does this all come from.  I bet the game is missing out on alot of potential customers from all this bad publicity everyone seems to be shrowded in.

Most the time people just say there waiting for 2012 and what comes with it which we all know what game that is.  Also people say they dont want to play another clone, thats a big one.  I Really dont get it, this mmo adds so many new and exciting things to the table, it doesnt have to be ground breaking.  They dont see my way of thinking though and i havent convinced any of these people that SWTOR is a great game.

The biggest thing is why are people so hell bent on there opinion, there is no changing there minds.  Usually normal people when they converse with others especially people that your having a good time with online will take someones opinion with a bit of integrity but not over TOR, there so adamant and stuborn about it not being worth there time that it makes me think there is something going on here more then meets the eye. Whats your take on the situation as the game launches?

Dude it's because many people are sick and tired of this model of mmo.  It doesn't matter that there is s space combat mini game or story added, it's still a theme park mmo to the extreme.  Many people do not like theme parks, and others just are tired of them after having played them for so many years.

Yeah it adds story, but that's just one feature like RIFT added rifts.  It's a nice new thing but ultimately it's still a generic theme park mmo underneath.

A huge lanuch was guaranteed the second they announced Star Wars + Bioware + MMO.  Let's see where the pop is at in 6 months and especially in a year.

I am shooting at about 50% retention rate, a normal amount for a polished and finished game

So I believe that until february they will sell about 2 mill units, they might end up with 1 mill subs, which is a healthy number nonetheless.

I have yet still to play the game, but damn, Im so bored with nowaday selection of mmos that any entry would be welcome, SW:TOR or GW2

I'll be very surprised if subs for this game are at 50% retention or a minimum of 1 million, there are too many games coming out that will draw people away and are offering at least a few new things to grab all the players tired of this model mmo - which are many.  Like you, I think a lot of people are on SWTOR right now because like you said, there just isn't anything else worth playing right now.  With GW2, TSW, Diablo 3, etc coming out in 2012, that won't be the case anymore.

I also think once the novelty wears off a lot of people are going to get tired quickly of this game.  Just like RIFT, it was AMAZING at first to everyone, then when the rift novelty wore off it was just the same game underneath - which is the case with TOR as well.  After you play a class from each side to max, you've seen it.  Class stories are unique but comprsie a very small percentage of your game time after starter zones.

This isn't flaming as I love SW and really enjoyed this game at first, but now the game is boring the hell out of me now, I don't know if it's just Nar Shadar but there is no variety in quests. They're all go here and kill this. Tiresome.

I hear ya - the idea of having to do some of this content again when rolling alts puts a bad taste in my mouth.  I think I'll be rolling much less than I thought I would.

Hey there would like to ask for those who played both Rift and TOR

How is TOR perfomance compared to RIFT? i mean i can run RIFT on mine Desktop with a acceptable perfomance/graphic(i have a poor GT240DDR5)  do you think i can have a similar result with TOR? thanks.

I can run both maxed.  On RIFT maxed I would hang between 30 and 40 fps in areas, in SWTOR around 100 fps.

So the idea of playing an alt for their class story sounded awesome to me at first, but I've got to tell you, the thoughts of having to go back through some of these zones just feels icky.  The first time through was helped by the story of the quests, but if you've already seen that once, twice, three times before, that whole extra is kind of over with - and some of this questing and zones just are NOT very fun.
