Not yet, they need to get a lot lighter before you can wear one for 2-5hrs. I guess if your in the play 30 min mode, your good to go.

Totally agree. Right now they are looking at a lot of head and neck issues.

People, if you think of all the MMOs we have right now including the ones you have issues with, does a VR help? You have the same underlying game play with a new display.   Would the kill 10 rats and fedex quests suddenly play better with VR?

Is this another smoke and mirrors gimmick to sell more to us without challenging the issues/needs of us consumers?  I say it is a gimmick.  We need better game play mechanics.

Game mechanics are limited by the user interface and VR can open up new ways for players to interact with the environment.   The difference may only be the perspective, but how we view things is immeasurably important.   I am sure a lot of players are sick of those fedex quests, but maybe they won't be so bad if it appears that you are actually moving through the world.

I also agree that it just isn't there yet, but with the industry wide movement to make consumer level hardware it appears to be only a matter of time.

Ms hololense is much more impressive in my opinion, but with that said I do think vr is not just a fad. It will end up in everyone's home someday.

I look at hololense as being a real world application ( industrial ) of VR, or maybe having the possibility of replacing mobile gaming on the entertainment side.    I don't really see how it could have any application to an MMORPG.

I enjoyed the game more when there were classes and roles people could play.  It still has the best action MMO combat hands down.  And the world is remarkable.  Unfortunately the type of people this game attracts (PvP crazed) don't seem to appreciate anything that isn't PvP related.  I still play the game even though I don't really love PvP.  I love the world, the smooth fluid real time combat and lack of being told what to do by NPC's.  There really is nothing else out there like this and thus I keep playing.  The game is actually fairly polished at this point.  People that want freedom, or free aim combat, this is the best there is in the genre.

After the initial change of darkfall's original game description; it has always been focused on PvP.   It really shouldn't be a surprise that there is a large population of PvP driven players.

It’s also free-to-play, which means that you can easily play the game casually and have a great time with it before deciding to shell out money for packs or to support more competitive play.  Most importantly, Hearthstone is one of the most accessible TCGs available, with still enough depth to allow for a wide variety of strategies and deck builds.

The article lost any credibility with those 2 sentences.

Not to mention, blizzard hasn't stated any financial specifics of  " it's success ".   They have only published a meaningless accounts made number and lumped " it's success " together with destiny in the quarterly reports, which is a common tactic to for under performing financial stats.

I think you pretty much covered it here.  Though pre-NGE SWG was a great game in many ways, it was also a bug ridden mess with some already poor game design decisions.  Such as having Jedi in the game in the first place, not to mention the rediculous holo-grind that came with it.

The holo-grind was never part of the original design for Jedis.  It was originally random set of skills for every character.

What this really comes back to is how the player approaches the game.

Some people don't look at their avatars as "characters". Some people don't look at their characters as extensions of themselves and some do.

Some people "can't" look at their characters as anything but extensions of themselves. Some people don't care about the physical "look" of their avatars and some will spend as much time as they possibly can crafting their "look".

This is just about different people being different.

This isn't true at all. Players will always act within the boundaries that developers set, and if they are uncomfortable with it, then they will just not play.  If developers don't expect anything more than a payment method from the player, then players will always act how they please.

This is pretty much all the ammo on the entire map. Not nearly enough for 100+ players. Battle Royale doesnt really count obviously.

Why do players that play survival games expect to run around like it is COD?      Would it not be more fun to play COD?

I don't really understand the allure of the play style in a survival based game.   Not to mention, that H1Z1 has dedicated servers exactly for this (battle royal).

I know in some games, mechanisms have been implemented to reduce "farming", by instituting diminishing returns if one remains in an area for an extended period.

But why?

edit: Isn't "farming" in this instance synonymous with "grinding"? Is the argument, "well, I don't like grinding, and if other people do it and I don't like doing it, it's wrong"? I don't get it.

I think it really depends on the game.   If an MMORPG tries to add some realism to the game by having a functional economy, then farming ( gathering resources ) is just part of the normal gameplay.   However, if a game wasn't designed with that intention, then farming just becomes a mundane task of players grinding for very little benefit.   It is seen as a stalling point in their vertical progression.

I didn't play SWG during the NGE addition, but I still can read the outrage that was left behind from it.

some how, the flaws of the change, slip pass the developers that were responsible for developing this new update, and it passed by many of the Testers I assume, because it still managed to get released, so I assume the Developers didn't get the feedback from them.

fast forward 10 years later....

Guild Wars 2, releases a NPE update, with devastating effects on the game. But some how, some way or another, this flawed designed update, also managed to slip pass the developers' heads as well as the testers, and managed to get Green-lit for public release. with a major backlash that followed.

but how does this happen? How is it, that these flawed designed and badly thought out updates (which I assume were also costly to make) manage to slip pass developers as well as testers before being released into public?

somebody that ran the studios, had to believe it was a good idea right? But do people on the studio ever tell those in charge when an idea sounds really really bad?

what happens?

In the case of NGE the publishers wanted to change the game.   I read an article written by an ex-employees that had stated SOE went with a focus group approach for feedback on the update.   Unfortuneatly, that focus group wasn't representative of the actual player base and the information they got from group was opposite of how the general population felt about the update.

In the case of GW2 I would assume it follows a similar path to reasoning that LOTRO did their skill revamp update.   The metrics tell them new players aren't staying so they change things around in hopes that players will stay.

The basis for change in both instances is simply that developers don't really care what the players think when it comes to the core of the game.

So think about the value of that single streamer and how many people bought h1z1 because of him?

I think value is highly dependent on the game.   In the case of h1z1 it has relatively little value, but if they were to feature an indie game with low exposure it probably means a lot.

We don't need yet another vendor pushing yet another proprietary API.  If AMD officially retires Mantle once DirectX 12 and OpenGL 5.0 are out, that would be a good thing.  That would mean that Mantle basically offered a preview of the new APIs before they were out in a few sponsored games, which isn't a bad thing, really, but hardly justifies caring about Mantle when buying a video card.

Isn't Mantle the single reason for the directions that DirectX 12 and OpenGL are going?

Anyone want to offer thoughts on this?

I see what you did there, attempt to hide that fact that the sandbox of all sandboxes has been doing this for 10 years, and that somehow Blizz is special in its "greed"... ;)

I don't know enough about WOW to say if this is a bad or a good thing, but I thought it  was funny that you chose a game on the opposite side of the MMORPG spectrum as an example.

Seems pretty shady somehow.

Don't worry.  You can buy those codes from G2A, Kinguin, or any other shady 3rd party seller of game codes.

A developer asking people who like the game to post a positive review on a site?  Sorry, not seeing the problem with that.  He's not asking anyone to lie and also not asking anyone to omit the negatives.

Developer asked players to post positive reviews on steam to manipulate the score from " mostly positive " to " very positive ".  If you don't see the problem with that, then I think your moral compass is off.

There is no point hiding anything from the player since they will find out everything eventually one way or another. It will not stop min/maxing or the need for balancing.

I think the point of the OP was not to stop it, but to actually make people explore and find it.   There isn't much character exploration when the stat window has a list of every possible stat and a "mouse over" tells the user exactly what it does.

And people still think Gpotato/webzen a problem? yes there pretty bad, but if people take a look allods on the russian side pretty much the p2w was by Design.

At least one person understands the microtransaction model.

++++++++++++++

If the game is designed around microtransactions it will always be P2W, but each player decides whether or not they can accept the advantages that can be bought.

Just finished a debate on Gw2 forums regarding macros. Lets see how you feel? Please Answer with Agree or Disagree(+arguments if any)

  1. Macroing is different from botting or hacking.
  2. Macros cannot make an inefficient gamer, efficient.
  3. Macroing alters only personal game experience.

If the system isn't built into the game, then it is just straight up cheating.

Yeah, you've got two of them listed there most commonly quoted, LOTRO and DDO. They said they didn't switch because they were struggling financially. Will find it here shortly. Posted the links recently.

Maybe I am just too cynical, but I doubt that any developer would state they switched models because they were losing customers.   Not to mention, developers will say just about anything as long as they don't have to say the truth.

I feel a lot of this has to do with the incestious relationship that " gaming journalism " has with the developers.   For years gamers were the only ones that raked developers over the coals for publishing aggressively monetized games.   Even to this day mmorpg.com and many others still don't factor the cash shop " costs " into their reviews and the only time they even mention cash shops is if it is " click bait " worthy.

Does anyone feel there are just too many games and especially MMO being released.

Game programing has become pretty straightforward, you have ready made engines, there's lots of documentation, API like DirextX have libraries that help you along.

Unlike on consoles there is no curation. There's no barrier to release a game. Sony and Microsoft have a barrier in place, you don't get to release anything on Xbox or PS4 if they don't think the quality is up to par, especially not on disc.

On PC this barrier simply isn't there.

It's increasingly hard to find good games through the thousands upon thousands of projects on PC.

Do you think there are just too many games.

The are low quality by design.   The microtransaction model is designed around producing products with short life spans and quick returns.
