[Column] General: When Should MMORPGs Retire?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/23/13 3:39:00 PM
Originally posted by Muntz Only thing close to EVE online is Lineage II when it comes to the open-world PvP with a criminal rule-set Only difference is that EVE uses (partial) full loot and in L2 you only drop when you have more than X PKs. On the article though... Vanguard should have been shut down ages ago already. I mean, 500 players active in the game and most (all?) because it came for free with the Station Pass? That's really an all-time low in server population I think... On the other hand CoX got shut down recently while it still had a good population. Why..? I'm not a super-hero fan, but the game was doing well that I heard off, then why shut it down (I think I know, and not gonna vent in this topic though :p) Publishers take really weird (strategic) decisions on when a MMO is at 'end of life' and when not. The only logical one I've seen recently was the closure of Lineage (1) for the Western market. That game was good as dead and NC made a wise decision on it. Though I might add that they should have opened the Korean servers for the Western refugees ;) |

You can only name one feature that for you is crucial as a player to enjoy in a MMO

No instant-gratification! I'm so disappointed by MMORPGs where you can level up within a couple of days/weeks playing casual and the easy rewards (items, money & XP) for doing almost nothing... |

I'm not sure if it's a psychological effect that the first MMORPG one plays will be the one with the best memories. You know what I mean, the first moment you step into a persistent virtual world and you were awed by everything you saw and how the dynamics of the game made the world actually happen. Of course, along with all the other players around you...
blog-post I made for today... |

I hope that Lindvior will indeed restore my dorfie warsmith back to her old class. That was the main reason I quited Lineage II in the first place when GoD was released... |

[Column] General: The Best MMOs of 2013... So Far

Honestly, of all the 7 games mentioned, I think TSW and NW are the only ones that are actually good...

Originally posted by Pynda Is becoming..? No offense, but the US hasn't really developed anything ground-breaking for the last 2 decades. Looks like the cold-war was a good reason for the US to keep developing anything groundbreaking, but ever since The Wall has been torn down it's been going down hill. Even NASA now has to rely on the Russians to bring their astronauts to the ISS... BTW, EU is also not that groundbreaking anymore... Looks like the Western world in general is getting behind and that the Asians are slowly taking over... |

Same as Nasa right above me. The key I had in the mail is: EU8ZD-RAVR4-BVE3S-WY3HW I just won't use it since I'll be playing on the SOE servers... |

Do you read quest text or just click accept?

Originally posted by mmoguy43 There was a FUN foundry quest around this in Neverwinter. Some NPC was telling you a story about an evil mage deep in the dungeon along with some "Blah blah blah" in the quest text. You just answer "Kill 10 rats? Got it!" and you move on. Next you meet him again and the same thing all over again. Happens a couple of times (you don't even wonder how the dude is still ahead of you). Quest ends with that NPC in the center of the dungeon telling you that you should have paid attention to his story and you answer "Kill the evil mage... Got it". It was one of the most funny foundry quests I found so far ;-) |

Do you read quest text or just click accept?

Originally posted by asmkm22 Same here, trying to read/listen to the story told. But when the story is bad or has nothing to do with the current location/lore, I just press OKAY and check where I have to go. It also depends on the game I play though. If a MMORPG uses an 'X marks the spot' map/quest tracker then I'm more likely to skip the read/listen then when I get clues on where to go from the quest text... |

What MMO do you believe had the best potential but failed in execution?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/16/13 12:03:40 PM
My 2 have already been mentioned a couple of times: Tabula Rasa and Vanguard. One died too soon and the other is already far past dead :'( Really wish those 2 would have a second chance with better support and attention from their developers...

Game no longer accessible. Great job, Bioware...

Originally posted by Dihoru Sadly VG is turning undead. I decided to reinstall it and check, and am wondering if I was the only player on the whole server... Back to topic... Uninstall SWTOR - game is not really worth to play longterm. I mean, when you've played all content once, why reroll? For the 'personal story' of the other class that is only 10% of the total game? IMO they should have made SWTOR a single-player game with co-op play... |

[Editorial] General: The Beta Is a Lie
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/16/13 9:30:39 AM
The beta is indeed a lie when you put it that way. But look at it from an other side though...
(Open) beta is used to test the game. With the former sub MMOs there was a timeline laid out that the beta and open beta would happen, and after those had happened, the servers were wiped and the game would be launched. At that point you're certain to sell With Free2Play MMOs things are a bit different. If at a certain point the game is (almost) ready to launch but you're not sure all bugs are killed developers opt to make it a 'soft launch' or rather call it open beta. During that period the game is monitored closely and you can expect a patch almost every day the first couple of weeks. Just to iron out the bugs that were not found during the (closed) beta period. Yeah, Neverwinter is mentioned more than once as being in 'launched open beta', but Star Trek online's Legacy of Romulus will do the same. I just read on the STo forums that after LoR is released we can expect daily patches to iron out most bugs, glitches and exploits. Personally I think it's a good move for Free2Play publishers to make open beta a 'soft launch'. They assure their players that the game won't be wiped anymore, and in the mean time these players are 'live testers', helping to iron out those bugs / glitches / exploits that have been overlooked during the (closed) beta period. |

Originally posted by tom_gore Was about to say LotRo as well. In my old guild, of the 30 active members there were about 7 women there. I haven't seen any other MMO with so many female players. Though I gotta say, in Lineage II I've been in a clan with quite a lot of female players as well - my perm-group even had 4 females out of 12 players (...and the chit-chat on the team's TS channel...) |

When you go to the Wildstar site and click GAMES on the top, only GW, GW2 (both B2P) and BnS are shown. L2 and Aion (both F2P) are not there. With that in mind my guess is that Wildstar will be a B2P title with cashshop like GW & GW2 are...

All mentioned and more... When you're with the Republic of the Empire, you're not bound to stay there. You should be able to defact. Also, your light/dark side should influence more than just appearance. If you're Sith or Jedi and you're too much 'on the other side; you should even have severe negative effects. I've made a blogpost half a year before SWTORs release that BioWare uses a too black/white (or rather light/dark :p) view on the force. You can do so much more than what SWTOR has become... |

I already thought when posts like this would pop up... What do you mean with lack of 'end-game' content? I think Neverwinter has the best 'end-game' content of all MMORPGs around. When you've run all epics and have maxed out your gear score, then you can jump in the foundry and play (or make yourself) the hardest adventures you can imagine. IMO Neverwinter actually has no 'end-game' because of the foundry... |
