[Column] General: The Best MMOs of 2013... So Far

Neverwinter and GW2 really have no place on that list...

I hope not. The only thing I find more annoying in fiction than time travel is parallel dimension stuff.

Do you read quest text or just click accept?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/16/13 12:13:17 AM
I just click accept. The only game where I didn't skip the "quest text" was SWTOR because they had dialogues rather than monologues and thus let the player interact with the quest giver.

I think this game will look great. It's kind of a hybrid game. Not quite MMO, but not regular multiplayer game, either. More like something in-between.

Free or not free. Doesn't make the game any better.

Straight-up melee man-at-arms/knight/soldier types that rely purely on might and skill to get the job done. I'm fine with magic-based classes, but there should be might-based ones as well. I dislike it when there's only glitter sparkly spark options even for melee. I'm also big on pure magic schools based in elements. Such as Aeromancy (lightning, winds), Pyromancy (fire), Hydromancy (water, ice) and Geomancy (earth). Each element could have a class representing it. |

What was the total CU got from Paypal?
General Discussion « Camelot Unchained 5/13/13 2:54:54 PM
As a European I had no issues pledging through Amazon, so I didn't have to wait for the PayPal option. Very, very few people where I live have no credit card. GOA won't be hosting CU's servers in Europe since GOA doesn't exist anymore. |

Perfect video to explain why the "Rose colored glasses" argument is horse crap.
General Gaming « General Discussion 5/12/13 2:27:01 PM
I think especially a game like Doom could be redone with current graphics and be a big success simply as a function of its gameplay being vastly superior to many modern shooters.

"Rose-coloured glasses" typically refers to you looking back at something and because of sentimental reasons you think it's better than it really was.

I heard the PC port of the game is terrible, so I hope you bought it for a console.

He means many MMOs today railroad the player down a fairly linear path, while older MMOs were more nonlinear in their constructs. A typical level in Doom typically allows some freedom in terms of which order you visit the various areas. The video shows a new version of that game where it's been changed to railroad the player down a linear path. It's a classic game with much of the features old school gamers hate about new games. Railroading, cutscenes and handholding designed to stop the player from thinking on his own with a dash of DLC greed. So it's a parallel to the MMO scene. Exploration before and railroading (and handholding) now. The video is directly targeted at Call of Duty of course, but some aspects compare well to the MMO scene. If you've never played the original Doom it will of course be difficult to see the connection. Sometimes things really were better back then. |

Question Everything: Levels, Who needs em?
General Discussion « Camelot Unchained 5/12/13 7:37:30 AM
I don't like that idea. It's not going to be very fun having to level up by fighting guys who completely steamroll you.

The reason I find stealth much more problematic than other abilities is that it lets you pick and choose your fights, which is a very powerful tactical ability. In a closed PvP setting like an arena, this doesn't help much, but it's quite a different story in an open PvP setting.

[Silly Poll] Where are the WoW players going?

MOBAs probably. That genre has truly exploded.

I actually think travel time and downtime is a good thing as long as it's in moderation. It provides some contrast to the combat gameplay. You can't have highs without lows. It's used very expertly in many games and other media such as books and movies. Take the Lord of the Rings movies for example. There's a lot of calm moments where they're traveling or talking in-between the action scenes, and none of the action scenes are allowed to go on for too long. I think MMOs tend to forget about this and that many players are in fact looking for more of a virtual world aspect from the genre than lobby-based multiplayer. I think this is one of the major reasons pretty much all MMOs coming out lose most of their playerbase so quickly. I think there is room for some kinds of fast travel, but I dislike the inexplicable teleportation from LFG systems. I think teleportation and summoning spells are cooler because they're part of the world simulation rather than an arbitrary UI. |

Friend and I bought TL2 recently. And I don't know, it just gets boring very quickly. I had a lot more fun playing D3. The combat is just a lot more interesting somehow. We've played around 5 hours total and he's like "man, this is kind of yawn" and I had to agree with him.
