I'm not emotionally or financially involved in this decision, so this is my detached view on the situation.

Cryptic should have sent out the invites to the CO subscribers that were due invites, first and foremost. They then could have given out invites through contests etc. for the PR gains. It's a bad business practice to burn your investors.

I suspect that they have closed-door reasoning behind their decision not to send out the invites. Perhaps time will tell.

I wouldn't have minded TOR being KOTOR 3 and have it work like Borderlands. I really like how they did Borderlands. You can play up to 4-player co-op. They're going to charge for DLC (and no monthly fee o/c), which is fine with me b/c you're more likely to see the content w/o all the hassle of raids. However, I'm still looking forward to TOR and I have high hopes it will be teh awezum!sauce!ness!

Still going Jedi Knight. This game needs to be ready and released, yesterday. I'm bored and I could use some Star Wars in my diet.

Cmdr. William Riker: Tough little ship.

Lt. Cmdr. Worf: Little?

http://www.shackvideo.com/?id=15758

"There's three basic types of ships that you can get in STO. The first one is a cruiser. Cruisers are really tough. They take a lot of damage to take them down. They have a lot of crews so they're hard to disable. This is really good for tanking."

WHY IN THE BLEEP DID THEY HIRE MMO DEVELOPERS TO MAKE A STAR TREK MMO??? Way to take another IP and bleep it up.

"The second kind is an escort. Escorts are really fast, they're pretty maneuverable, they can dish out a lot of damage at one time. But they're pretty weak, so they're a lot better for dealing DPS."

LFG for Borg raid! full on DPS.. LFM Science/Cruisers.. pst

"The third type is a science ship. Science ships are really good at increasing the abilities of you and your teammates or decreasing the abilities of the enemy. They do crazy stuff like bouncing things off deflector dishes or scrambling enemy sensors. It's really good at doing support."

STFU and heal.. deflector dish me damn it!

That's the first 2 minutes of the video, the next 2 minutes is talking about the phat lewts you'll be paying a monthly fee for so you can feel like a special snowflake in a sea of green borg piss.

Your post was funny to read. The part I quoted was where I said "yes!" Add to that a skill (not class) based game and I'm up for it, as long as it doesn't look and run like complete crap.

It's unfathomable that you would think a new game should be FREE. That's like saying all automobile's should be free and you only have to pay upkeep.

But lets be real here. If all games were free and there was only a monthly fee, you'd find more grinder clone games, like what's prevalent in the Korean MMO market. So many clones it's a sea of same. You're hardly going to get investors to put money into your product, the type it's going to take to do something new and different.

As it is, you have companies buying engines and building games based on those engines, and yet they still spend millions getting the game going. Convince investors that you're going to get them their money back and earnings in a short time, good luck.

I have quit playing WoW, a few times. But I did unsubscribe a few months ago and I don't miss it even now. I miss it taking up time when I was bored, but all I need to do is remember how bored I was when I logged in and then I realize I can't even fall back on WoW to occupy that free time. Before I canceled this last time, I used to login and just around. I was so dis-enthused with the game, I wouldn't even leave the main cities. I didn't want to raid. I didn't want to farm. I didn't want to run heroics.

I've played alliance to end game and been bored.

I've played horde to end game and been bored.

I've done 5-mans end game and been bored.

I've played end game and been bored.

I get no enjoyment from WoW anymore. So that's why I don't play it. I have ZERO desire to login and play. The prospect of Cataclysm won't change that. It's 5 more levels and then end game. Blah.

EDIT: Just realized this was my 888th post - and my join date being 8/16/04.

It just seems weird to me!

I like what they're doing to explain what's been happening to get to where they're going to be when the game starts, but I think they could do better.

Look at what TOR is doing. They have a professional actor narrating their scripts to explain what's happened in the universe to get you where you are when the game starts. I think STO could take a page out of Bioware's book for that idea.

Here is the deal folks. I bought the game when it came out, but jumped ont he trial code when I had the chance. This is a contest. The first person to solve my questions wins the key. I will be going to sleep after this is posted, and as such, there is a high chance of fraud with editing posts. Therefore, and post that has been editted will be disqualified. If you wish to change your answer, post again. Once again, to make it very clear, if you modify your post in any way, even just to add a PS, you will be disqualified, so dont do it! First one gets the key!
So here it is, solve the following, and oyu will get the key. It is a sentence.
"Q0hPVEE= 01110111 01101001 01101100 01101100 64 65 73 74 72 6f 79 116 104 101 verden, YW5k 01101001 01110100 77 69 6c 6c 98 101 vakker."
Enjoy peeps. I will toss out a clue or two if no one gets it by the time I wake up. I just know that someone out there is nerd enough to figure it out though. :P Good luck!

Hold on. Wait a second.

That's it!

Yeah that's it!

That's the melody to FUNKY TOWN!

Star Wars Galaxies

...would have to be my pick. It started off with a solid idea, which was a sandbox MMO that had strong RPG elements via the profession based skill system. It died a little with the Combat Update, but was still at the core, very playable. When NGE hit, everything that made SWG stand out was gone. Although I kind of miss the space combat; the ability to walk around in your ship that was actually taking up space was way cool. I don't see STO or anything coming out that has that.

After the article, I haven't read more than the first couple of posts and I doubt anyone will actually read this one, but add me to the group of people who think...

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IGNORANT THINGS I'VE EVER HEARD OF IN GAMING HISTORY!

I think you're arguing semantics. In the interview, he said he was keeping the engine and they were trying to figure out what the new game exactly was going to become. They also said they went back to the original design document because they felt like what they were producing just wasn't going to meet their goals at all.

1st quest: go dissuade ten potential customers from trying this game

2nd quest: go annoy ten current players and force them to logout

3rd quest: cancel your account, uninstall the game, and never look back

4th quest: repeat first three quests until you succeed

I kid, I kid.

Honestly though, if this is the standard "kill 10 wolves" game that is reported above, it's truly not of any value to the genre. There needs to be more creativity and less rinse and repeat.

It's kind of a sad state for MMORPG.com that this obvious mess up has yet to be corrected. Is anyone working the site today?

This *new* trailer was released on the official site on 2008.08.08.

I played it for a while, but I didn't like that I had to constantly baby sit my towns b/c they could be attacked at any time and if someone large enough decides to take a grid, you're screwed. You have to TP out and hope it doesn't happen again. This never happened to me, but because I didn't want it to happen, I was always on. I didn't want to constantly have to be on, so I stopped logging on so much and noticed that I was getting attacked a lot more. I joined a large guild, which then turned into 3 guilds and I just got bored.

A guy at work always plays it and he's still having a lot of fun. He's progressed on his three accounts way more than I did on my one account. He has huge armies and farms NPC villages as well as players whenever he finds a reason to. After all, it is a war game.

Anyway, if your lifestyle allows you to monitor your cities and constantly queue up attacks, this game might be to your liking. If you don't want to spend all your free time and some additional time, playing Evony, then perhaps this isn't the game for you. It really does require some upkeep to be good at this game.

Oh and that friend at work has only spent ~$5 on the game in the few months that he's played it. I'm not sure of the exact time when we all started playing.

The link to Quick Beta Q&A (http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3657/page/1 isn't working right now. :(

nvm, working now
