I had the same problem as you but I send an e-mail to their support staff and 2 days later I got. THis is the best F2P mmo right now imo.

There is a place for both fantasy and realistically looking medieval gear in MMOs.


The one issue I have with fantasy gear however is when an item is either so colorfoul or misshapern that I can't identify what it is. Like in most asian MMORPGs, players in  fantasy plate armor often look more like mecha, or a cloth's wearer armor is depicted as an unidentifiably mess of colours, metal and leather. 

Warhammer's Chosen, the dark knight guy in the purple armor for example looks great, both in and out of game, but fantasy armor is usually much wierder than the pics you posted. Anyone else remember's WoW's pink power ranger (paladin armor set that looked like pink crystal armor instead of plate).

It's a matter of suspension of disbelief, imo.

Mortal Online released some new screenshots that include full frontal nudity. I found it hilarious really. Now all we need are different sized private parts per race and I'd say the game is ready to ship (to oblivion). Then again the whole MMO genre is a joke if nudity ends up being a selling point for an indie company. LoL.

Nothing, that can even remotely be compared to what EvE Online offers, or what's ananounced for Earthrise.

Another thing, why Darkfall and Mortal Online can't be compared is, that they have multiple servers and not the single game-world for everyone that EvE Online offers.

Multiple servers split up the community. What you do is of no value to the whole game-world etc.

What a MMO needs, to be attractive for several years is a "single world sandbox approach", where everything you do matters (besides questing and killing mobs).
Even the whole economy in EvE is PvP, there's nothing to be bought from NPCs besides blueprints or POS-modules. Anything you buy or sell is in direct competition to other players, where things like ressource-cost and availability counts. Holding space and harvest the available ressources in these player-controlled territories effects the whole playerbase etc.

So to make it more visible as a list, of what a MMO needs, that attracts player for more then a few month:

  • single world (single worldwide server)
  • no instances, but seemless world
  • open world FFA PvP, with some areas, where it's safe (police-patrolled, CONCORD in EvE)
  • harvestable ressources, but not like in WoW or anything like that, but real industrial harvesting like minig or moon-harvesting in EvE Online
  • conquestable territories, with the possibility to build your own city (industrial buildings like factories; denfensive and automated structures, to protect your territory, warehouses, etc)
  • player-driven economy, every item in the game is player-crafted (no item-drops from NPCs)
  • modifying of items, with dozens of possibilities to enhance items in one or the other direction
  • item-decay -> constant need of new items being produced
  • full loot with insurance-system (see again how it's done in EvE Online)
  • faction-standings that determine which NPCs will shoot you and which not, with the possibility to change sides
  • open skill-system, that let's you train everything you want (crafting- and combat-skills alike)
  • equipment-limited use of skills, you can change your role and be a melee today or a sniper tomorrow, but you can't do it all at the same time

That's only for starters and not in detail, but that's far from what Darkfall or MO are offering.

Will this attract millions of players? Maybe not, but as EvE Online prooves, it is attracting enough of players to make a succesful MMO.
Will people stay longer then the usual few month? Definately YES, as it doesn't get boring once you've hit end-game. These kind of games actually start getting interesting, once you hit end-game.


While a game like that would be great, it's just too expensive to build with current technology if it is a classic mmo, that is an mmo with a player avatar in a fully fledged fantasy world. Eve Online can pull it off because its world is basically empty. They could be adding new star systems every day with minimal work, worrying only about balance issues. That's not the case when you have to design and texture the whole world. But hopefully one day, Eve will be translated to a more accessible setting.

Gamers: Cool, but we were expecting new stuff, not recycling stuff that's already in the game and giving us the ability to play those two campaigns which we were supposed to at launch.

Valve: We still have a lot planned for Left 4 Dead!

---2 Months Pass--

Valve: Hey everybody, Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out. It's got new campaigns, new characters, and new weapons! How innovative is that! The best part is that it's going to be full price!

Gamers: What the hell! You promised us all this new content for Left 4 Dead, which is the entire reason I even bougth that game when it has so little content. Now you're putting out a sequel that could easily be DLC content.

Valve: Yeah, we kinda were planning on giving you guys all this via free updates, but we decided it was better to ignore our promises to our fans and make money off of you dumb people.

Tools: game!? Hell yeah! I'd better start saving my birthday money.

Everbody Else: Screw you Valve. We payed full price for a game that had almost no content just because you promised us you'd add to it, but instead of delivering on your promises of updating the game you're expecting people to pay for it while keeping existing L4D players hanging.

Valve: It doesn't matter. Look at the site. There's a ton of stupid people who don't mind paying for something that was supposed to be free. Sorry, but dumb people now make us money.

I'd rather support the company in the middle of a crisis, than whine for a game that was released a whole year ago. I have no doubts that L4D2 will be better and bigger than L4D1 and worth 50 Euros just as much as as the first game did. I loved that game! L4D2 has new chars, 5 new campaings, AI Director-guided maps, new weapons, new infected, a new engine and a new gameplay mod... everything a sequel is supposed to have. 

As for you, go QQ more. Whiners like you want all of the above for free and that's not going to happen. Bah, as if Valve has ever let us down.

I, for one, am excited with L4D2.

The game offers more than just melee weapons and most importantly, the AI director will now also change certain parts of the map to suit the progression of the players. For example, the devs mentioned that the crypts in New Orleans are different every time you visit them.

Plus there are completely new triggered events, new weapons, new graphics, new enemies like special infected and hazmat-suit wearing zombies, new survivors complete with new voices, 5 new campaigns...


Overall seems like a solid sequel to me. This stuff couldnt be sold as an expansion pack since I 've heard they have also upgraded theeir engine to accomondate for the changes.

As for L4D1 it was a great game when it launched and it has been patched to being even better now. QQ more imo. I had more fun with L4D than any other game last year and I intent to have just as much fun with its sequel.

As much h as the Eve players like to think their game is fundamentally different than other MMOS, it is really pretty similar.  The XP in eve is cash.  The more you have, the better equipment you can field.  Eve is a game about grinding ISK rather than XP... in the end it's just like most other MMOs, except that the quest system is super lame.  In the absence of decent story driven content, the players have to create their own motivations and goals... and somehow they find freedom in that lack of gameplay options.

EvE dosent have a quest system my friend. Its just one way of grinding ISK to fly missions no diffrent then Sitting in an astroid belt and grinding for ISK... EVE is a Grind, for the people that have minds and focus and vision enough to understand WHY WE GRIND. I Get ISK to Wage War on other players, to build mor cheeper ships/weapons then other players, To controll the market from other players. EvE is a PVP game on all lvls, That is the beauty of it. Now I like to make money IRL also, its fun to make stuff and sell it and get money in the bank. Its fun to compet against other  franchises/brands and beat them. EVE is about going againt other players in the market, on the manafacturing table or on the battlefield. Its not about running the newest Theme Park ride that the devs made for you to enjoy. That is the diffrence In my book a human opponent beats an AI 10 times  out of 10. 

EVE dosent have Gamplay Options that the Devs put in front of you.

Although I agree with most of what you said about Eve, the mission system really is just a quest system, with NPCs giving you missions to kill/scout/escort the objective and return back to the NPC for the reward. And there is nothing wrong with that imo.

As for EVE being a grind, well I am a new player and tbh it doesn't feel like a grind since noone is forcing me to actually grind anything, not even ISK. I am concentrating on having a military career, and I still have sufficient money to do what I want to do without feeling that I am grinding. This is due to the myriad of ways you can make money in EVE from transport contracts, to salvaging, to trading, to mining, to doing missions, to shareholding.

I enjoy both sandbox and themepark games though and I am certainly enjoying EvE (it's not as hard as they say it is, it's just you always discover new things to do!). That being said, I would love to see a PVE focused game again, since all the recent releases have been all about pvp.

I doubt you will ever have an mmo w/ permadeath per say, but it wouldn't be too far fetched to for an mmo to implement a zone or battleground so to speak that when you enter, upon your death, you cannot continue in that zone/instance till theres only 1 man left or until a time period is reached.  Make it that the zone would have great rewards the further into it you went, but once your dead you cannot reenter until it's reset or completed. 


The idea is similiar to a raid style instance but once your dead your dead until it's reset.




I'd have to say that this is a brilliant idea. This could definetly work. Sounds quite challenging.

- Unexplained issues
- Heavy trama

- Abusive background (my parents died at the hands of Arthas!!!!)

You pick an ability or skill you want, and you work your way up that tree.  Find another skill, do the same thing.

Some people would lean heavily on healing abilities, others on melee, magic, ranged etc, or any combination they like.  Essentially everyone would be allowed to create their own class.


I will have to disagree with you. In my experience, skill based systems may be fun, but they almost always homogenize everyone. Everyone ends up pretty much with the same abilities which is ok for pvp I guess, but since we are talking about the holy trinity here, the skill system is lacking imo. Again imo, skill system doesnt really work that well with fantasy settings; I couldnt imagine eve or fallout with a class system, but for a genre based on D&D where wizards are completely different from, say, paladins, classes are the way to go.

I agree with the OP, classes have to be more diverse and involved. Perhaps if there was again more focus on CC and support as a role all of its own (like bards and enchanters used to be) instead and classes had more diverse specialization, the class system would (could?) shine again.

It actually surprises me how downright bitter and hostile commercialized gamers are when it comes to even the discussion of immersion features.  It is almost unbelievable, and I think they take themselves completely seriously when they cast personal insults from "I dislike you" to "condescending prick" to "details, details" argument.  I think we are somewhere between "incoherent" and "details, details" since the personal attacks failed.  



Options, variety, and diversity are at the center of freedom and uncontrolled gameplay in MMORPGs.  As I said, to echo an earlier theme, I am genuinely surprised by how nasty paying-customers are in their defense of the copy-and-paste, parallel content, and controlled gameplay model.  Options, variety, and diversity would still enable more commercialized gamers to log-in and complete repetitive tasks and level-up and gear-up.  It is just that many of us want and expect more.



Life is too short to be bitter about anything.  We need rigorous discourse on how to change the MMORPG experience, and my theory is that it is through innovation.  We also need to discuss why immersion features are lacking or totally missing in today's many and varied MMORPGs.  For someone like ME, without sounding pretentious, I am not sure what the big deal is.  The word you used was, "heresy."  It is interesting that the discussion of innovation and immersion features attracts individuals more inclined to engage in personal attacks than any controversial political, religious, or social issue I have since heretofore discussed in the Off Topic section.  People "honestly" do not want innovation, and they have more than enough games that "honestly" do not and never will have innovation or immersion.  Or that many of us are asking for a new, different, and unique sort of MMORPG; we got controlled gameplay, fixed and polished worlds.  We need something more.


So many words, so little substance.

You should also provide examples of innovatie features you would like to see, or at least theoretical points on what alternative game designing there could be instead of just bashing the companies and proclaiming your little crusade. Saying, " I want innovation" alone won't cut it, we have to contribute ideas to to move the gen forward.


Btw, raiders being called dumb is just you are just being rude. Find another way to express your disdain of the current pve model.

What the? They weren't expecting battles with hundreds of players? O_o

Considering that WAR was designed around scenarios first, Battle OBjectives second (and keeps third lol), no not really. Besides, it's not easy to get even one hundred players in  the same zone in WAR , it's usually around 50 persons at a time. 450 would have to be like half my server in one area. Imagine the lag! :P

The new area looks great. The last boss (the living statue) feels like its shamelessly stolen from God of War 2 collosus fight lol. Hopefully the new area will be more engaging that the currect end-game and will contain e.g. PQ within the rvr zone and the like. If they manage to pull it off and polish the game's performance a little bit, maybe revision a class or 2 (which is underway for shammies and archmages btw), then WAR may recover. Many people are waiting for Land of the Dead to make up their minds if they will ever play WAR again or call it quits.

It's not a bad game per se, it just lags like hell when 50+ people are all squeezed on this tiny ladder in keeps . You should check out the trial. My suggestion to you is to wait till patch 1.3 goes live (it introduces a whole new area). But yeah... I play the game and it runs like crap.  At least its not as bad as it was in lauch (even though its launch was pretty good).

Most definitely. I currently play war, I have the CE and my oh my I can barely enjoy the game. It runs horribly. Is it the programming? Is it the coding? I don't know but it sure makes the whole experience look bad.
