Combat - I do like the active dodging, blocking in combat. (tho i'm not sure why people act like it is a new thing)

Size - so far, judging by where I've been and the map, it looks like a pretty large world.

Polish - I haven't seen any bugs and the launch seemed smooth, tho granted I was on a trip during part of it and I don't know if I just missed some problems.

Graphics - loaded up the game, turned graphics on max, getting very good FPS and my computer is set up more to be an audio recording monster than a graphics machine, so. well done as far as I can tell. Tho... see art style below.

Monster AI - is pretty good, more at higher levels.

Species - I like that they have original playable species, even if some have an aesthetic I can not stomach. (tho i was too late to make a Baraka named Obama on my server, damn you fast downloader!) My main is an Aman(sp?) goat lizard thing. i must admit he looks pretty cool swinging his Freudian-sized Axe.

Cons (objective):

Character customization is a bit lacking. Fact that they have built in the capability to have good sliders, but that hair and horns etc. are linked is strange. No body size differences.

No skill customization to speak of. Glyphs, w/e. I am spoiled by City of Heroes.

Quests - boring. nothing new here.

Mobs - with the decent AI that the monsters have once aggro'd, I am annoyed at the typical way they are standing around waiting to be XP. I suppose some of the fights were reminding me fondly of Darkfall, and then realizing that, if these beasts should be hunting me. Thankfully, there are some that group up on you, but it is not like in Darkfall where they attack you from afar, and run away. More like Ryzom, but not quite as refined so far (I'm mid level only).

Cons (subjective):

Art style - granted very subjective, but I just don't like the fantasy eastern style. I like some eastern style art mind you, (e.g. Black Lagoon) but just not this typical fantasy style. I just zoom in so I can't see anyone else and I'm cool. I mean, when your gay friend laughs at how 'queer' it lol...

Elin - gag

Potpori - gag

It is, quite intentionally i think, a niche genre game. I am in beta and impressed, but the genre is not geared for mass appeal.

For me the largest thing was that, with my naga mouse, I NEVER EVER HAVE TO LOOK AT THE KEYBOARD AT ALL!

It's amazing. usually in an mmo I have so many tool bars that eventually I find myself looking at the keyboard or doing that one thing where I have to click something. But in this game I can be completely immersed and never have to take my face away from the screen.

Which makes the fights more exciting,. especially pvp.

I also love the art design though I don't love all of the art design.

Similarly, I like that I am not having to look at toolbars at all. That I have to look at the animations of the enemy. and my position. That is very immersive to me. At least with Zerker and Warrior, I don't have tons of cooldowns to worry about, at least not more than I can remember. I find I'm often playing zoomed way in, where in most games I've usually been zoomed way out looking at the next objective (harvesting node, next mob, etc.)

I was exceedingly happy to just think abstracting about what my characters powers were based on how he looked and hook him up. Blood magic and a sword. Actually had a good flow too at low levels.

i am never careful.

i buy games that look good and stop playing the moment they prove my hopes wrong :)

i like you, im not one of these people who say im not gona buy mmo for just free month, why not? it servers longer than single player games wich is mainly finished in 8 hours and mainly cost more money aswell.

i do also buy whatever game looks good to my eyes and play as much as i want and then quit and buy another one.

That's me too. And for this game the price will be worth it for me to just explore some of the locations they have built even if I don't like the combat or endgame.

But I respect the fact that I have a good income so i can be that way. It is part of the reason I try to provide objective feedback shortly after released or NDA lift for people that are on a strict budget.

I think it goes in part to suspension of reality. This is true in many cases in movies in the sci-fi and fantasy genres as well. And it is a long time habit of ours.
Think about the in-your-face primary colors in most of the Wizard of Oz. The fact that Hellboy hardly ever appeared with anything else red in the same shot. The sharp black and white contrast of the Underworld series. The common way Disney or Pixar has its main characters with different colors (granted that is to sell stuff to nagging kids who need it over simplified for recognition at Walmart). Even a lot of westerns which have an overt sense of being gritty and ‘real’* often used color filters to accentuate for example, the red color of the desert, the white versus black of the good guys and bad guys, or the bright hue of the female lead's dress in contrast to the drab wooden buildings.
As to the oversized weapons and armor, part of that is obviously Freudian. Also, I think that is far more rampant in games that have a gear grind and can be connected to a lack of creativity on the part of the gamers and the developers. We want and they provide, MOAR EPIC! so 'well we’ve already made everything with strong lines and contrasts, guess we’ll have to make it bigger!’
But there are games that are an exception, Fallen Earth, Tabula Rasa, Mortal Online, Star Trek Online, Age of Conan, and though I agree with the consensus on some of the other issues these games have had, people have not given them the respect they deserve for realistic graphics, in my opinion.
*i.e. don’t get me started on the American Indian aspects.

engy to start. Guns! I dont really like fantasy, but GW1 was too good of a game to skip.

 I'll make this short.

I love the elder scroll series, but they are single player RPG's.

Do you really think it's possible to copy that type of combat into ESO and end up with something better than what is currently in Darkfall?

Personally, I believe that if the devs were copying Elder scrolls combat into a futuristic fullbody sim, it could work.

But that tech isnt widely available in the market yet and what we have to work with (keyboard and mouse) cant do the combat justice without making it look like CounterStrike knife fighting (which is what I think DFO combat looks like)

So while Iam not defending the choices the devs made,

I find it hard to believe what most of you want in combat is possible.

I don't know why it would need to be much better than Darkfall. The combat in DF was great in my opinion. The UI is bad, the uncapped and redundant skill system is bad, but once you built yourself a nice autohotkey script to switch weapons and all it is pretty damn awesome. Melee just needed more skills and better animations. They core was good.

Tabula Rasa RIP. Lacking at launch admittedly, but less lacking than many other AAA titles that are still around.

Perpetuum I think, but I don't know the details, I remember reading they were adding terraformign and player built cities, definitely has most of the sandbox features, but I only beta'd it.

Fallen Earth, granted it has been a year since I played but...

"What are Sandbox Features?

A game that has many of these features can be considered a sandbox and a game that has few of these features is not.

  • An open world yes
  • A non-instanced game world (zones can be fine) yes, largely, and instances are seamless (you only get a pop up)
  • Character progression or development outside of combat yes, you get XP for crafting
  • Gameplay features other than combat activities crafting is a big part of the game
  • Player-driven in-game economy, for materials, inguilds, but def a weak point
  • Character development that can be customised via skills and/or customisations of class roles, open skill system
  • Non-linear character development, not sure I've ever seen this
  • In-depth crafting system, yes
  • In-depth resource system, yes
  • Persistent game world, yes
  • Player's ability to change aspects of the game world, territory control yes.
  • Some form of customizable player housing/building, tents count?

Was about to say that. I don't know what I'm gonna do when GW2 comes out. nice to be caught between where I want to have fun.

i think the only mmo ive ever played that i havent fully used keybinds in,was sw tor.and thats because i guess some genius at bioware thought it was a good idea to cram a truckload of skills in the game and not put macros in

i mean i could understand there stance on macros if the game didnt have a boatload of abilities in it.but it does,so i dont get why there so against macros

Their freakin dev videos have them clicking. i am dissapoint.

I can see your point, but it hasn't stopped me from playing. Most of the attackanimations are great imho. But some of the races, he blue skinny elves, for instance, I cant take their running seriously. I always want to slow down cause they look like they are about to fall over when running.

actually there are people who are homophobic so not everyone can do it.

(For those not in the know: "twink" is slang for a young homosexual person)

Damn, you beat me too it hah. That up there is why I've never understood why people use that term for games.

Each time I see someone say that I just shake my head at them.  Type it into a GOOGLE search, just "twink" and guess what pops up first.........No pun intended :)

The term in games CAME from the gay term actually. The notion being that the higher level player (older guy) would give gifts to the lower level (younger guy). It was meant in a derogatory way unfortunately.

And Her

I have tried to play Darkfall casually, and I'd recommend anyone try that game, but I couldn't stick with it because so few people played it. PvP was fun, but I'd play for a week before someone would attack me. I'd even run into enemy territory and people would just run away.

I went to some organized event, race war, a few years ago, and everyone was talking about how everyone would be there, and oh it was so massive. psssh it was like 150 people. At that same time, I'd be fighting in mobs of 150 every night in War.

I don't fully know why people don't gravitate to DF. Its not that big a deal, except psychologiaclly when you loose stuff, it is so easy to get more stuff.

I have cringed more at the death penalty in City of Heroes (which barely has one except for the fact that you have a long long way to run back sometimes.

I liked the Naga, but it physically broke after 9 months. I also found I wasn't using all the buttons. I got a Cyborg Rat 7 and it is a tank.

There is no monthly fee that is why Arenanet is charging the same price as a PS3 or XBox 360 game. Come on, do some research, this is the going price of most AAA games.

Yeah...I don't think so.  I mean, lets just go all the way and really be realistic... This discussion was had, and killed 12 years ago.  I don't play games for their realistic depictions of living.  I don't want to have to 'warm' up, eat, sleep, etc in my games.  I get enough of that in real life.

This ^^^

Does addiing this warm/cold feature add to the fun? Or does it just another chore to do (remember to change clothes!)?

I'd like it in the right setting. E.g. in Fallen Earth, where there is a sense of, just trying to survive, it would make sense.

Xsyon maybe too, I only beta'd it, and cant say i read any lore.
