Go play a game like WoW? I haven't even played FF XI, but I sincerely hope that they keep the grouping focused play because it is unique among the current selection of MMORPGs, and the people I know that play that game love that grouping is necessary.

The first part of your post really isn't appropriate and is incredibly immature. World of Warcraft, despite it's flaws, isn't the easiest game in the world and to denigrate the game by using it as some sort of pejorative is just not cool. If you want to tell the OP to play a game that you think is, to perhaps oversimplify, 'bad and far too easy,' tell them to play something like Maple Story or some free- or pseudo-free-to-play game. If you want to take shots at World of Warcraft do so legitimately, take a shot at Blizzard.

That said, even though I am unlikely to play FFXIV I do agree with you that they should all but force grouping. (note: FoV makes soloing viable for all jobs but if you really are out to do this for any other reason than time constraints you aren't going to have a good time.) This is what FFXI does and games like it do, period, and folks need to accept that it is what it is and that it isn't necessarily bad. The problem with the forced grouping in FFXI is that it really is non-sensical. We have a litle joke, both former and current players of FFXI, that 'no matter who you are, no matter how badass your jobs, somewhere out there is a rarab that can kick your ass!' This is what the OP is emphasising, not the forced grouping but that it is largely meaningless for mobs as trivial as rabbits to be amped up on methamphetamines, angeldust and steroids and require a full party destroy.

Personally, I'd like to go further and say that it also shouldn't require de facto party compositions to take down certain non-NM monster either, and it largely doesn't, but that is simply the mindset that has become part of this party mechanic. Because even rabbits can rival the power of God (it's hyperbole but not terribly far off) players what parties to be constructed in a very specific way to make the inevitable 3+ hours of inputting the same commands over and over more effective. It is important to notice that fun isn't a part of that, not usually, and this is a problem too.

The only really good thing that can come out of forced grouping is a much greater chance of having a legitimate and tighter community and stronger bonds being generated between players. After all, if you're spending hours staring at largely the same thing on the screen (except the text) you're likely to talk to break the monotony. The more you talk the more you're likely to get to know the people you play with and the more likely you are to party together again.

There are some definite pros and cons to be looked at here and they are rather strong on both sides. Square-Enix can do something great here if they find a way to make forced grouping work, which is what I think they will do, but folks are definitely in for a rude awakening if they think that S-E is going to make changes to what they invision for their product. That is simply how S-E operates, for good and for ill, in a straight line and with little direction from outside influence. It should be clear to players of FFXI that this is the case and this is something that should inform their decision to play FFXIV. (I could, of course, substantiate this claim but I think I have done that in other places here and it would make this post too long. Those that have experienced the game know that it isn't exactly player-friendly, for several reasons, and that those who experience the game now are aware of just how long it took for S-E to do what they did.)

All I meant by "a game like WoW" was that you can play most of the game by yourself. I can't even understand how you got that I was insulting the OP or saying WoW was an easy game out of that short (and I thought to the point) post. This isn't about "difficulty" it's about community and what I've heard about FF XI from people who enjoy the game.

Didn't have any intention of upsetting people on here. I have already admitted I haven't even played the darn game, I have just heard from my friends who have played that they enjoyed the fact that grouping was required. If most people would rather have something else fine, but there's no reason to go calling me names and getting all upset over my opinion. I think it's unique to have an MMORPG that has so much grouping required among the current options available.

Had an Asian friend like this on WoW with the exception that he didn't criticize my gear unless I asked for it. I didn't mind that he only started talking about stats and gear and blah blah either, because it was kind of interesting the way he talked about it, and he was one of the best DPS I grouped with *shrug*.

I liked it better back then, get off my lawn! *shake cane*

I seriously did like it more back then, and I didn't think the filler talents were all that bad. I actually love that they made all the tanking classes completely viable at tanking and all that, but don't like most changes.

I get them like all day long ever since I merged my battlenet account with my WoW account, on the email address I had set up for battlenet (not the one used for the wow account).

I constantly get emails saying my account has been hacked or something, blah blah, but the last time I checked my account it was perfectly fine, so these emails are just annoyances that fill up my junk folder.

Edit: Never been hacked on WoW, and never got any other phishing emails except maybe from Aion.

I watch my boyfriend play this all the time (he's on his second play through or whatever) and it looks like a really good game, and it honestly doesn't look super duper hard like everyone says it is, but I can see that it certainly has some difficulty. Haven't played it yet, but plan on trying it soon.

Edit: Dude in the game this cut scene happened, and he got summoned and now he is playing as a boss and waiting for another to player to come and fight him, how sick is that?

"Not being a fanboy but what beats WoW?"

At what? Accessability or subscription numbers? I don't think any MMORPG does.

  • There are MMO's with better graphics (age of Conan for example)
  • There are MMO's with better art. (really anything but Alganon and few other copy cats)
  • There are MMO's with more depth (EVE, Fallen Earth, EQII for example, hell even SWG)
  • There are better MMO's for raw PvP (GW, EVE, DAoC for example)
  • There are better MMO's for customization (really anything)
  • There are more challenging MMO's (EVE, AoC, Fallen Earth for example)
  • There are MMO's with better worlds (SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, EQII just name a few)
  • There are better MMO's at social aspects
  • There are MMO's with better more mature lore.
  • There are better MMO's for simulating economies...
All bizzard has done is target the achievment orientated player building on the b-net crowd and hang onto them with a zillion point gathering set ups over the years.

In the numeric sense, nothing "beats" WoW but what is the point of "beating it"? Many games are better in many different areas of play.

I'm quoting you, but I'm also talking to all the other people in this thread who apparently only read the thread title and did not read the OP's post. He goes on to say which game beats WoW in terms of polish (like how fluid it runs, and put together everything is).

I think I will give DDO a try. Is there anything else to do there then just instances?

It's almost all instances and that ended up turning me off, but it is definitely worth a try because the dungeons and combat are both very well done, and a breath of fresh air from all the MMORPGs that give you the 1 2 3 4 tab fest.

Being a tank in WoW is probably the worst job ever, as you'll be flamed alot by all the dying DPS-kiddies, who don't even give you two seconds time to pull and aggro the mobs.

Running dungeons with random groups is total crap imho, especially as a tank or healer, but I wouldn't even consider it as a DD.

To be fair WoW has evolved to the point where it's insanely easy as a tank, by just running up to a mob and gaining instant threat that is adequate. It's only more challenging when you are undergeared with an overgeared group of DPS, but that's why all the tanking classes have a taunt with a short cool down *shrug*. The only thing that takes skill as a tank are in raids and I guess pvp.

Tanking is the funnest role to play next to healing in my opinion.

Wailing Cavern, oh my i would queue for random just to get the blue reward but when the game put me in that dungeon i just /quit, cant stand that place, so confusing, millions of trash mobs to kills, not worth the effort.

It's more confusing reaching the instance itself than going through it, and they teleport you right there now ~_~. It's a straight forward instance and most of the mobs are optional kills. I didn't think it was anymore challenging than stockades or dead mines, but I guess at first glance it looks confusing.

WoW broke mine.  NO, this is not a hate WoW post.  I came from a very happy MMO experience with EQ, the fact that some of the guild folks I knew from Afterlife were helping shape this game gave me reason to try it out.  The first year was fairly good and enjoyable.  It was not always easy, had moments of frustration and challenge.  That all started to slowly disappear over expansion and patch.  Constant class changes, alterations of spells, abilities, power shifting, dumbing down of challenges, focus on arena to focus back on raid to then refocus on quick leveling.  I became very disheartened and I am a bit jaded with what it is now.  The clashing of generations of MMO players altered what WoW was and could have been to what it is now.  I still wish the gamers that play it the best, but for me WoW takes the cake.  I had better hopes for the game and now only look back as it being a speed bump on the road to better MMOs in the future.

I have similar feelings about WoW and how they made constant changes to make it 'easier'. At first (like right before TBC came out) I thought it might be cool, but then I realized that it made leveling a treadmill running experience, instead of a fun, challenging, adventure (or at least that was WoW to me before TBC).

I think WoW would have been better off with keeping the leveling pace the same and not increasing the level cap, and not making the mobs easier. I also think WoW would have been better with either no arena and battlegrounds, or only at end game, wasn't really thrilled with pvp gear and resilience when they introduced that.

Too much grind is when I feel like I'm doing the same thing too much in a video game and I am no longer entertained by it.

I was disappointed by WAR and Aion.

EDIT: Valve also releases their first f2p game called Alien Swarm today!!! Using source engine and has multiplayer of course, if I remember right it also had some kind of equipment system.

Oo thanks for that.. I don't know if I'm prepared to re-download steam though, I hate it a lot.

I didn't play very far into it, but it seems like it would be hard to actually explore anything when the game holds your hand taking you from the quest takers to the places where you do the quest and blah blah. But I mean you could run around and see stuff >.>

The majority of WoW players play to get the things they want as quickly and efficiently as they can, be it EXP, gold, items, or emblems.

If you want an experience outside of that look for certain guilds or make your own.

Runes of Magic is the one I'm playing right now (and I've tried WAY too many). But if you are European and have a decent computer I say Martial Empires.

Make an MMORPG with a giant world for the landscape and all the tools for creating the game themselves. You know like little big planet style but more, where you could create the landscape, your character (including skills, animations, gear/clothing), the NPCs, the quests, housing, structures, creatures, items, dungeons/raids, arenas, battlegrounds, everything. The game would be very polished and accessible for almost any player, each player would be alloted a certain amount of land and moderators would go around moderating the content, and players would be given tools to help moderate content as well. The gamers could each create the game they wanted, or they could explore and find the place they liked best.

I know it's crazy, but I like it, and I definitely think it would be a game that is "by gamers, for gamers".

As i was about to quit... I now suddenly have this feeling to level a tank, atleast i may take off  a few seconds on the long wait times your speaking of. :P

It's insane how quick you get into groups as a tank - most of the time I was in a group just about instantaneously after I hit the find group button. BUT I can almost guarantee that as a fresh tank you probably will be kicked from groups when they see your health.. or at least this was the fate for my beloved warrior (but to be fair she is on one of the most elitist realms I've had the pleasure of playing on). You might want to prepare for running groups with a secondary spec of DPS or Healing until you have better gear.

If you do roll a tank and get up there with the appropriate gear for heroics, but everyone wants a t9 ready tank, don't get yourself down. My main on WoW was a healer, and I used to heal my warrior tank buddy in WoTLK heroics, while he wore a full set of t1 gear (about 11k health, and very crittable) for fun and we did those heroics just fine and it was a lot more fun for me. If people don't think your blues are good enough they are the dumb ones not you. <3

I only played Aion for the free month that came with purchasing the game. I somewhat enjoyed the game... the combat was alright, I liked the character customization, the pvp rifting and fighting in the astral was all interesting, but in the end I felt like it took too much grind to have much fun. It was actually a memorable experience, I had an awesome leveling buddy and made a lot of friends and even some enemies, had a few adventures amongst the mostly boring leveling experience, but it ended up not being enough. I think if the game had more features like player housing, mounts, or something it *might* be worth the grind, or if they just made it a little less grindy it would be more fun. I dunno. Oh I also didn't like how the world didn't feel connected to me like I had been spoiled to in WoW, I know picky.

I played WoW for let's see.. 5 years off and on, and when I look back I can't really explain why I was so hooked to that game. When I started playing in Vanilla it was also grindy, BUT before everything was made brain dead easy (and I was new) I made good friends in the game and we actually *explored* and had fantastic adventures, and the grinding became completely irrelevant to me. I'm not quite sure why I stuck around after the expansions that killed my favorite game... I mean it still had some good things, and I enjoyed the raiding and some of the community. I would probably be playing it right now, but I can't justify spending $15 a month for a game I can only stand to play very occasionally.

Well I'm just rambling now. Aion and WoW both have notable PvP and PvE in my opinion, but I generally preferred Aion's PvP to WoW's (although only by a small margin since WoW had measures to copy aion and WAR, wintergrasp *cough*) and I prefer WoW's PvE to Aions (but to be fair I didn't reach end game in Aion).
