OP  10/19/06 3:45:56 PM#1

David Perry, the industry veteran who has also worked on Earthworm Jim, talks about his upcoming ultra violent MMORPG 2Moons.

MMORPG.com: Give us a little background on 2Moons. How did the idea begin? What was Acclaim's motivation for an MMO?

David Perry: I'm just one of these people that want to fire up a game and have fun. If I'm required to know the back history of 5 clans, or watch 20 minutes of cinematics, or read a website before I can have fun, it just bugs me. So I've been toying with the idea of making an MMO that's easy to get into, easy to understand, possibly funny at points, but that makes you feel bad-ass. Not wanting to wait 3 years to find out how it went, I looked for games/engines that could be a match. The closest I could find was a game called Dekaron made by GameHi in Korea. So now I had to convince the creator of that game to let me make any changes (not small ones, big ones, like "Erm... Would you mind if we changed the entire story?") They agreed! So being on a roll I made a list of "difficult requests" and flew to Korea again to explain those in person. Again, they seem receptive and are working on those. The great news is that we are just a few months away from launch.

So I've teamed up with a publisher with no Baggage, in the form of Acclaim. Howard Marks (the CEO) was one of the guys that brought Activision back from Bankruptcy, and as you know it's massive today. He's now doing the same thing with the Acclaim brand. He's backing this concept 150% and so I say he's either crazy or a pioneer. Only time will tell, but you can be certain he'll have a lot of consumer fans that got to play his games for free.

"If I'm required to know the back history of 5 clans, or watch 20 minutes of cinematics, or read a website before I can have fun,"

I'm sorry but I cannot remember one game that REQUIRES you to read to play the game. It's always optional to read it or not to read it. Misinformation like this tends me to believe that this might be another game of false promises. Great first impression.

Though I could be wrong, I believe that he used the word "required" within the same context as "you're required to get LOOT X,Y,Z to compete with the twinks".

You're not actually required to compete with twinks at all but it's perceived to be true because they're rampaging through the content, or because guilds require characters to have loot from Uber Dungeon, or because people won't group with your character because you have n00b gear, and so on.

You could easily go through the game at a merry pace and accumulate items as any new character would, but that would kind of suck and/or would be pretty dull.  Therefor, most perceive it as a "requirement" to compete with the twinks, even though technically it is not a requirement.

My take on his comment is that he used the word "required" in much the same way.  Sure you don't HAVE to, but the game could be pretty dull if you don't know what's going on.  Some titles simply do not explain enough within the game.

Don't take his comments too literally. :)

Of course, I could be wrong.

Well beside the semantics of the whole thing the whole "bashing of other mmos cause mine is better" and then describing how he's going to use an ingame advertisement system... doesn't sound too hot.

Violence has an unfair stigma in games thanks to Take 2 with their dishonesty when questioned "is there adult content in your game?".

I like this comment because it stuck me as utterly absurd. What mother or father would buy GTA game with any kind of delsusions about what kind of game it is? Just to be clear, violence had always been acceptable for games, while sexual references are not. Insuinuating Take 2 or anyone else making violent games is responsable for some non-existent 'stigma' is a pretty silly idea.

Ehh... Well the Advertising is optional and you dont have to watch stupid adds if you dont want to as David said.

And i could say that if the game is free to play there must be something else to support it like Advertising.

97% agreed with it in the forums cause there is a price for keeping it on and thats better exp.

And The Game is Free To Play if you understand what the text saids....

Oh well what should i care, i just had to post a reply for this because it annoyed me and i hope other ppl wont get the wrong idea by reading that post :P

I really think this game is going to Rock!

Unfortunately it happens some parents are completely oblivious to what their kids play
and the "unfair stigma" that David i presume is refering to is companies like Take 2 that when asked how violent or adult oriented their game was and respond that there is little or no violence and release a very violent game give ALL game companies a bad rap like David said nowadays game companies have to be upfront about their games content as well as the "the violent game made me do it" that is constantly used when a kid goes and kills someone or gets into trouble with the law then everyone says "well there should'nt be any violence in games" which is why we have a rating system for games now which suprise surprise most parents don't pay attention to their kid says "I want this game" and they go out and buy it for them with out even looking to see what kind of game it is so yes there is a "stigma" against violent games

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king - LAST OF THE MOHICANz

10/22/06 12:13:19 PM#9

This guy has struck gold with pushing the concept of gaming forward - advertising in-game - fine by me if I level up quicker and more so if i like the product being advertised (other games?).

The mmo is an industry still in the dark ages and anything to break it out of its donkey kong mode has to be good!

Sadly the game sounds pretty awful.

Survey says - class system not as good as skill system...and yet another fantasy class core game structure yawn!

Survey says - Asian conversions to Western market are always terrible - Archlord any one lol

storyline sounds like a big cliche.

If the target market is adult then let's up the game mechanics. I would play this game if sex and violence were uber explicit purely for the novelty factor. If it is GTA level then yawn...i know 6 yr old girls that play GTA. Otherwise 2Moons does nothing for me (apart from the advertising element).

I sound very critical but as a consumer it is only fair I speak my mind. I will still keep an eye on this one in the hope it has some more USP.

Um, you can't lose...
The game will be free to check out and free to play (with Adverts turned on).  So um....

Aside from the extra gore/violence and new advert system, it doesn't sound like anything new.  But heck it still might be fun, and you can't go wrong with FREE to play :)

Pad's playing: WoW, HL, TR, GuildWars.
Former MMO Exp: AOLNWN, M59, UO, AC1&2, EQ1&2, AO, SB, EVE, PS, EU, DAoC, DS, CoH/V, MxO, DDO, SWG, AA, Arch + many more.....

Well, my first impressions from this interwview is that the guy that is interviewed is hyperactive. Thats cool. We need people with alot of energy you know? Heck, for once, I even like the advertisement system" (even though it still remains too see in which degree, how much and how they advertsie.) However, what I aint too happy about, is this deal about leveling faster with advertising on. Definetively not my cup of tea.

And then is the prospect of how they advertise; as I mentioned - I can be cool woth it - but what I dont like, is when real life things like adds interfere with my MMORPG experience. You know, they are supposed to be an escape from the real life; you enter anopther world with its own laws, own nations, own wars, et cetera et cetera and so on and so forth... BUT if the adds makes me stay in the real world, then its done for, and it is kinda loosin half of its point to me.

And second, did they even mentioned their combat system? My problem with this interview was that its hard to draw a good conclusion other than the guy is really really really happy about this product.    It'lll make him some stash!

Hello there, adventurer!

Well, I liked some of dp's games in the past, and the guy really is hyperactive in a good way :) link
But I agree that the interview is kinda .. not too informative, bashing the other mmorpgs, some populism included etc. I assume that it works though, maybe not for us, but for many of the people who don't know how to get any info about the game and spam the forums with topics like "Where can I download the game plz??!?"

About the combat system and stuff which some of the players of the original dekaron confirmed:
The controls are both responsive wasd and point&click, there is probably a button which activates the auto attack but you are free to click or hold the mouse like in diablo. The normal attack (with the equipped weapon) kinda stacks itself and builds a combo with increasing strenght, it can be interrupted via a succesfull block. From the videos it's obvious that there are many attack skills for each class. For further info see the horribly translated but nevertheless useful www.dekaron.com and the 2moons forum at 2moons.acclaim.com.

edit::
Endemondia, maybe I'm kicking a beehive here, because I think you refer to EVE and that's a sacred relic on these forums (not saying it's a bad game though ;) ) but
"Survey says - class system not as good as skill system...and yet another fantasy class core game structure yawn!"
What survey are you refering to? You think that such survey is any good with WoW's 6+Million subscribers?

This illustrates one thing that bothers me; where is the website for the game? There is only a forum right now and the game is close to beta, that shows quite a few things for the development of the game.

Very interesting, looking forward to hearing more about this. Perry seems like a great guy, too.

I was surprised to see the name Acclaim pop up though, as they went bankrupt in 2004. But nope, apparently Howard Marks bought the Acclaim name and formed Acclaim Games, which I think focuses on online games firstly, and solely? Not too sure how much money they have in the bank account at the moment, I wouldn't assume they had much - its pretty likely that they are hoping that this venture will take off. A little doubtful, but the free-to-play status of the game means that we get a wonderful community of early teenagers, excited for a free game just like they were for Guild Wars. Thus, they will leave World of Warcraft, insulting it bitterly in the process, and proclaiming 2Moons to be the new cool MMO. Oh, I'm so cynical.

Still, looks fun, Perry seems fun, everything seems fun; if a little shallow. Also, I'm worried about these changes to a previously Korean MMO. I'm not sure whether any Korean MMO has really hit it big over here, and it's likely that 2Moons success depends on the strength of its 'westernisation'. I'm going to sign up at the website (forums?), because I'm very interested in testing the game and it would be a lot of fun to communicate with Mr. Perry and all.

Edit: Also, the website is best viewed with "Internet Explorer 5.0"? I know you may not have had time to work on the website much, but really?
