One aspect I really enjoy about 4x space games is the design aspect. One of the better games in this genre would probably be Space Empires IV, though it takes a little imagination to make up for the combat mechanics the game uses with those ships.
First and foremost, hull, shield generator, power, engines, armor, and CPU all should be uncoupled and made into 0 level components. For simplicity, ships may come in "kits" with these included with standard equipment (ships as we know them now), or they may come in barebones packages without such equipment for further customizability. Also with this, we would see 0 level slots for these components. Players could further customize their ships by omitting or changing out certain parts for really intering combinations. Armor tankers may omit their shield and use that extra 0 level slot to add more armor. A player might eat up half of their power plant to take an oversized engine, cutting their weapon capacity but improving speed greatly (Tack on an additional micro-warp drive for really fast travel! Though this would likely become a 0 level slot). 0 level slots may even be used to add more higher level slots. Combined with better research and manufacturing and players might be able to develop improved, more diverse shields, generators, CPUs and so on which can be used interchangably between ships to make for a stronger market, just as like when interchangable parts were invented in the US. Other possibilities that would be enabled by such a system would be auxliery power, which could be used to self destruct a ship or otherwise fire a few last shots from an otherwise disabled ship (assuming damagable components and ships that can be disabled and then captured). An auxiliry power/engine/cpu package unit which does all 3 and lets a ship limp home, and other possibilities, I'm sure. |

Ok ship design is changing for example you will soon be aBLE TO TARGET COMPONENTS SUCH AS ENGINES SHIELD GENERATORS GUNS ETC just like in say frespace for example. Also you can overpower components for a tempory boost for example. Boost shields get faster regeration rates or better shield resists. penaltie your shields could fail for a few minuites or you get reduced capacity. Overcharg guns to make them boom better but chance them overheating and blowing up |
