Lead Designer Stephane Quilichini and Marketing Manager Géraldine Lescs answer our questions as Dark & Light moves within a week of launch. Included is exclusive details on the game's final pricing plan and five exclusive screenshots.

To play, players have two options. They can pay $59.99 (US dollars or Euros, depending on where they live) for a game key and their first month’s subscriptions, or pay the same price for the key and something called a Freedom Pass.

Normal subscribers pay $14.99 a month for full access. Freedom Pass subscribers pay the same price for 15 credits. These credits are used to unlock things like new areas, high level equipment and other content. Freedom Pass members cannot be guild leaders, fort leaders, have limited access to titles and must use one credit to unlock each item above the companion level.

“It will be less expensive for casual gamers,” explained Quilichini.

$14.99? $60?

basically what they're saying with those prices is that the game is the same quality as world of warcraft which is a pretty big joke.

“Even if its not all finished like we’d like, but we have too much delays so now we have to get it out, its time,” says Quilichini
Ummmmm, ya.  That just about says it all.  Maybe I'll buy it months from now, if they finally complete the game with all of the features they promised over 3 years ago.  I'd like a box, too, so that is another bonus of waiting, aside from all of the other nonsense that players will have to put up with after the release of this mmo.

Unfortunately, they really bit off more than they could chew with this game. I predict launch will be a complete disaster and the game will close down before it passes the 1 year mark, it's too bad too as it had some really good potential.

That is actually my favorite quote in the whole interview

Does anyone get the impression that the interviewer was, well, slightly underwhelmed by this game?

There's nothing really bad in the article about the game...it just sounds so, erm....mediocre. I'm thinking of lines like these ones:

“To be honest, only 70% of all the features on our website will be in the release," admitted Quilichini before adding that the rest would come through patches.

"The game’s combat system is the “classical one for MMORPGs” with spells, special moves, etc. He added though that the entire experience looks better thanks to motion captured animations, but admitted there were “no specific innovations” on that front."

Ultimately, Dark and Light provides players with a PvP experience, a craft based economy and the ability to conquer new lands.

“Even if its not all finished like we’d like, but we have too much delays so now we have to get it out, its time,” says Quilichini.

Essentially, doesn't it just sound like every other generic fantasy MMORPG out there?

If NPCube/Farlan think, they can sell DnL for $40/€40 and demand $14.99/month from players, then they really do not understand how the MMO industry works. Demanding such a HIGH price for their already unpopular game is the last straw that signs the death knell for DnL before it is even released. I'd not waste money/time to buy this game, knowing that it will not last longer than a year at most.

Demanding THAT MUCH money from their very patient and loyal playerbase, is a slap in the face of everyone that still stuck with DnL, even after the disastrous release of SoG and the countless broken promises and release dates.

$ 59.99 ??

On the DnL site they sell it for $ 39.99 so are you sure you got the price right?

DnL is like every other generic fantasy game out there. But compared to most other MMOS currently on the market, it falls short on practically all aspects of a MMO and compared to all MMOs currently in the making, it is not worth a second look.

Listen, this guy is absolutly so clueless it's rediculious.

Almost the whole MMORPG community (players playing the other games and long-standing citizens of these games) have already indirectly voted on this game. Whether threw messege boards or while playing their perspective games (EQ, EQ2, DAOC, WOW..etc) all the "talk" about Dark & Light is bad and more BAD.

Stephane NOW wants to talk about his game... where was he the last 4 years ???  Dark & Light's core fanbase up and left about 5 months ago leaving a bunch of newbies on their own message boards carrying the torch, why did the older and long standing core players walk away from Dark & Light ? COMMUNICATION

Look, nobody wants to bash a game. Either a game is good or it isn't, very few games are "bad". This is one of them. It is soooo bad sinply because Stephane has not taken the right direction with his DEV team. There was no beta, SOG was a joke the Stress Test this week REALLY isn't a stress test and now they are starting beta 1 week before the game go live ..?

Many veterans of this genra' had repeatedly asked WHERE is the DEV's, why is there no skill tree...etc  WHy is the snowboarding but no underwater travel...?

The kicker is that living on Reunion Island their perception of reality is skewed. Dark & Light should be a bargian bin game ($5.99/month) to equal it's lack of quality and outdated (2001'ish) graphics engine. Artifact Entertainment all taught us a lesson with Horizons, Farlan/NP3 followed the exact steps and alienated themselves from theri perspective buyers and think THEY know what makes game phun.

I don't like to "knock" people, but there isn't one qualified gamer on their DEV team. Dark & Light will certainly appeal to people have the same mentality as the DEV... newbies, who never played these types of games (MMORPG's), But there are PLENTY of other games out there currently that offer a vastly superior game. And let's not even mention the other games comming out later this year.

Dark & Light was a nice effort by non-gamer lead DEV team. Unfortunatly, it offers nothing but a BigWorld (pun intended). This game will flop and go bankrupt by November ..!!

I think you people underestimate the maschosim of gamers.  Look at SWG... it's still going.  D&L seems to be following in their model.  Unfinished at release, poor communication.  If they follow it up with horrable release and testing practices. thy'll have nailed the SWG model completely.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION

The price of the game is NOT 59.99 as first reported, but 54.99. I apologize to Farlan for the typo.

Err sorry man but your flat wrong on this. I am no fan of the game any longer, but I wont let some idiot spew incorrect information. There was a beta it lasted for roughly 8 months, and was ongoing during SOG they were testing the launch version of the game.

As to the rest seems like you got burned by this game cause it isnt going to live up to what you hoped, thats life man not everything is as people say it will be. I dont see a reason for people to post how they think a game company is a bunch of noobs and idiots cause they didnt make the game the way you wanted. Hopefully for us gamers and for the DNL devs the game is playable and fun in 6 months. Not like there is anything else out there worth really playing right now anyway.

As far as the graphics are concerned, I am again have to disagree with you. Personally I think the landscape was wonderfully drawn. Its one of the nicest worlds I have seen. The movement animations need some help or did dunno if they ever got fixed, since I quit playing the beta. I will readily admit though the game needs a redesign of the interface, it is perhaps the worst thing I have ever tried to play with.

Not sure what fantasy world you are living in, but everyone knows that beta ended the day SOG started. It has been discussed on these forums several times already.

This game is a huge pile of crap. It belongs on the trash heap with Mourning. The graphics are poor. Have you looked at any of the textures? They look like they were made by a blind man.

This is truly a fantasy mmorpg. Because if D&L thinks I am paying a premium price and a premium subscription fee for a game that has 70% of its advertised features and 40% of the gameworld, that's high fantasy.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, GW, CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War, and a slew of free trials and beta tests

We need to show NPCube AND all other developers that WE, consumers, Will NOT tolerate incomplete products, will NOT buy anything that is not 99.99% ready and has 99.99% content. If we support developers like NPCube, then we will be hearing these lines next : "We release this new super pooper MMORPG with only 20% of content, we dutifully pledge ourselves to create the rest of content somewhere in the near future *giggle*" Stop this madness!

Stop selling crappy, untested, buggy, empty-shelled games! Give us ALL content or not at all.
I have spoken.

There has been an External Alpha/beta since late 2003, I was one of the first 50 back in Nov 2003.

Stopped really caring to test it after 6 months, Updates where far between and as mentioned, communication was terrible, just enough to not be called nonexistant.

Where have you been?
EVERYONE that has really followed D&L knows that the Closed Beta ENDED right before SOG launched in December.
They didn't even mention it and kept stating in various posts and interviews that there IS a Closed Beta running in conjunction wtih SOG until someone slipped and acidently spilled it in the French forums!
And then the English forums got bombarded with this info in which they FINALLY decided to Officially state that the Closed beta has been closed .

They DID NOT Announced this fact until the End of January!

A whole month AFTER SoG Launched and the Closed Beta was canceled a couple of weeks prior to SoG launch!

There is a Difference between a Closed Beta vs the Devs playing around with their own private internal clients.

And you know what ... Come May 30th, many more beans will be spilled because the NDA will finally be lifted.

No it won't sadly...Not that it will matter. There isn't anything testers can say that NP3 hasn't proved beyond a shadow of a doubt with their actions. ;)
