Jon Wood met with the people behind NCSoft's new visual masterpiece: Aion. The game offers breathtaking graphics and much more. Find out what's behind the beautiful pictures.

Heading into E3, NCSoft had announced that they would be demoing a new game. All we knew heading in was that the game’s title was “Aion”. Other than that, we had no real details until Laura Genender and I had a chance to run through the gauntlet of NCSoft presentations.

Aion is a game being developed for the Korean market and localized at the same time for the North American market. Joey MacArthur, the Localization Manager for the game who gave us a hands-on demo later in the day, told us that they are hoping for a simultaneous launch.

My first impression of the game during the presentation for this particular title was that it was visually impressive. The environments were particularly interesting, especially when you added in their weather effects, which, as it turns out, not only look appealing, but also serve a function in the game, affecting some player skills. Fire magic, for example, doesn’t work as well in the rain, and heat waves reflecting off the desert sands might impair your character’s abilities.

Not saying they stole their combat system from Everquest II, but I have played EQ2 before and that chain combat skill system works the exact(I mean exactly) the same way that they described it. When you use a skill, a second one will start flashing so you hit it and it does a chain attack, then another might flash indicating you have another skill to add to the chain. They even made it to where your party's skills will interact with each character.

Game does look neat but I seriously dought I will be playing it.

nice article Jon. It seems Aion was sprung on us in a happy way. It appears to feature alot of what players are looking for. I love the graphic effects and am happy to hear there is a favorable opinion on them. yet another game to keep tabs on.

The enemy is so dumb! They believe that WE are the enemy! - A famous orc commander.

I always wanted to play In Nominae Satanis and for some reasons, it just never happen.

The setting is definitely appealing, the many servers rules let's me suppose I will maybe find a server that exclude all forms of PvP, maybe...

The first time I read their name, I was thinking...is that the RPG with that disastrous launch?  But not, have no link.

It will be unable to escape the Rating M 18+ and if they manage to be successful, I would advice that they just get their team of lawyers who scare Marvel to be ready to work.  Having angels and demons might draw the attention of one of the 0938392742 religious groups plaguing NA!

But, I am definitely looking forward this game now...the setting is great!

Tigris, you do realize EQ2 stole this flashing feature from the oldest electronic games?  Way before there was something to be called a computer?  You know, memory games...personnally I don't particuliarly enjoy this, but well, maybe, I don't dislike it either.  In fact, in EQ2, beside graphics & guild stuff, there is nothing I find innovative.  *shrug*  In EQ2 you can barely jump...in this game you can fly, the only other MMOs featuring fly are...CoH and CoV and it was nicely done, so I expect it to be nicely done!  The graphics are definitely outmatching all I have seen in current MMOs...and the thematic in Aion (which I tend to want to write Aeon, bad bad me) is just sweeet...at last a religious oriented MMO!  CRUSADE!

People have been flying in Anarchy Online for just about 5 years now. Kind of odd how people keep forgetting that.

As for Aion, I came up with a mock game design for one of my classes two years ago that's basically the same concept. I was shocked when I heard about this a few months ago. Definitely something I want to play.

Game looks awsome, but uhh. MONTHLY FEES... I'm to poor for that and besides I think teh whole monthly fee crap is getting old.. How do they expect to get new players into mmorpgs when they slap a monthly fee in their face?? -.-

Dragon trapped in human body

I just beg there will be monthly fees! Not because i am such rich, but because I tested several "free" MMOs and got disgusted about their bad (kiddie-)communitys!

If you wanna see how flying can work: Try Horizons! Shurely it could be better, but if Aion meets it, it will be nice!

On the other hand: Give me one of the dragons, and keep the angels and demons for your own!

Where did you get the Dragon pic?  Was it on this site?

I'll try Aion just because it looks so gorgeous, but it sounds like NCSoft is trying some weird stuff if you read the website.  Players effecting a server and deciding things like whether a server is RP?    Well, it should make watching this game develop interesting if nothing else!

EDIT - My bad, I re-read the article more carefully and players won't determine i
