The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.

The game is best described as hollow. It has INCREDIBLE music (imo) and excellent graphics, if somewhat limited in scope. It also runs quite well on relatively lower end machines, so kudos to Codemasters. That is where it ends. Sure there's a lot of neato toys that change the way you look, but the game is grind...and grind...and grind...with the a 10 minute chip war every 8 hours or so.

Basically, it reminds me of a jelly donut I once had. I was eating it waiting to get to the sweet and juicy middle, which the bakers had forgotten to insert in this pastry. Finding only a pocket of air where the 'sweeties' were supposed to be, I 'had my cake' but was left wanting.

<sigh> Time for another donut.

Considering this game was designed for the Asia market I don't think it's hollow.

Codemasters have already said they're going to change it so it appeals to the West.

Only time will tell

I agree with the OP.  I enjoyed RF Online for a while.  I thought that there was a grind but it wasn't bad.  It's when I realize there is nothing else, beside the grind and the chip war, when I looked for another mmo.

I wish there was more content, more character customization, and just a little more variety.

Its definitely because of the asian market.

Games have pretty much developed in a state over in asia to where its more of an expectation to play games. They play them to beat them. Whereas over here in the western world, we keep getting more picky, like we're a bunch of wine snobs about our games now, lol. Yeah, its a bit of a grindfest, some people like it, others dont. Personally, I hate grindfests. I want some quality vintage dammit.

The BIGGEST let down imho though, is the marketing for the game vs. the actual game. I was WAY jazzed about this game, way more than any other I had ever seen. MECHS? MAGIC? GUNS? FANTASY/SCIFI? OMG! The cg preview videos pretty much made me drool. When I got ahold of some beta access, I was slightly dissapointed. When I got my preorder, and kept playing, hoping it would get better, it didnt. Biggest...letdown....ever.

I'm not real sure if hollow best describes the game.  How about buggy, bad directions, bad conversion, and boring/bland.  I only played the 10 day trial and already could tell that this game can't hack it compared to some of the other big MMO's.

Buggy  = Even the tutorial was bugged.  I got to a few places in the initial tutorial where it wouldn't advance further into the tutorial.  I created another character just to make sure it wasn't just that one, but it happened again.

Bad Directions = I was able to walk from the newbie area over a few yards and get killed in 1 hit by some higher lvl mob.  Not only did I not know what lvl that mob was, but the spacing between the noob mobs and that guy is way too close.  When your low lvl in EQ the newbie areas are nicely placed and relatively safe.  The last thing I want to do is go to a newbie area and get killed right away.  A lot of this problem comes from the bad directions and tutorial given in the game.

Bad conversion = The text conversion sucks arse.  There are special characters showing where they shouldn't be and the word wrap in the text box cuts words in half.  That is like a basic function of the game.  I wouldn't even release a game if things aren't even displayed correctly in the chat box.  Really sad.

Boring/Bland = The place I logged into seemed empty and desolate.  That's all I can because there wasn't anything there to comment on.  There was no detail either.  It was so blah.

I know I didn't give the game much of a chance, but this game is not even close to being on par with other MMO's out there right now.

I  started the 10 day trial yesterday. So far I have enjoyed the game. To me, it smacks a little bit of Diablo 2 with the loot system and grind. Albeit D2 was grinding for heavy xp/drops. This is more for stat/skill increases. Zoned into the starting zone with the machine race, saw maybe 10 NPCs and thought, "This is NOT an American game." I kinda miss the simplistic areas every now and then... *thoughts wander off*

"It''s not true that I had nothing on, I had the radio on!" - Marilyn Monroe

This game was designed origionaly in asia, yes, but when codemasters got rights to it in America, they also have the rights to change what they want about it, pretty much, and they didn't do a very good job westernizing it, the grind needs to be decreased, the customization needs to be increased dramaticly to even hope to compete with the market coming up over here.
