We continue to trickle in the GDC previews with a record of Jon Wood's conversation with Joe Ybarra, the VP of Product Development currently hard at work on Stargate. He revealed several interesting design ideas and team additions, including Zeb Cook, formerly of City of Villains.

At this stage of production (pre-production), all of the decisions for the game have not been made, their team, which they hope will reach nearly 60. Ybarra provided us with a number of firm details as well as their thoughts and hopes for the game. What he did say, was that this game is not going to be "orcs in space", and will offer something unique that is true to the Stargate franchise.

The game itself will be based around 3 major factions. The first are the Free People. They're the good guys on the show, the Humans, the Asgard, the Tok'ra, are examples of these, basically the forces of good. The second faction involved in the game will be the Control People, those who seek to enslave and rule. The System Lords and other Goa'Uld seek to rule by fear and power, providing an excellent contrast to the Free People, a constant struggle. If this wasn't enough, the third group is known as The Entropy Group. Those who seek only to hurt and to destroy, the robotic Replicators personify this ideal. On top of this, the developers are looking to give players the ability to play a wide variety of races. The Asgard, for example, are a race that players have been asking for. MGM has given the ok on this, and it is the current plan to include them as playable. Joe also mentioned the possibility of including the symbiotes as a playable race. This would give players the opportunity to shift hosts and to make the decision of whether to be Tok'Ra or Goa'Uld in their behaviors. Giving the players what he called "betrayal ideas".

Between Star Trek Online and Stargate Worlds I don't know which one I'm excited for more. It's good to see a shift to the sci-fi genre, there are definetly alot of potential customers there.

Excellent! Especially giving the player to choose his or her race

To my attention, as popular as Stargate is on the SCI.FI channel, especially the other

local stations that carry the show, this game will be truly successful if done right.

I like the fact it will have 3 major factions that are playable and there will be PvP as well.

Sounds like the folks at MGM are flexible and the folks at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment

are on the right track!

On another note, MMORPG.COM, needs to give Startgate Worlds a post forum please

Star Gate SG1 and Atlantis is and will always be my favorite show. And i have high hopes for this game.
From reading that article i must say im pretty confident that this "can" be one of the best,if not the best MMO out there :D
And for the PvP part it just sounds excelent. But time will tell thou.
The part whit 3 faction's includinng the chance of a symbiot that can change host's. Man bringing the "traitor" or word "spy" a new meaning. I can picture it in my head now. O'boy i cant wait to get some more info on this game as it developes. ::::08::

Now please give us our own SG Forum to post in ::::28::

Fantastic article. It's great to hear of any remotely concrete information on SG-W. I've been waiting to see how many races/factions that will be playable and Ybarra's comments give a strong indication of what's to come. ::::28::

Now if only Stargate World can get it's own MMORPG section that'll be perfect :)

Joe Ybarra has had a major hand in some pretty crappy MMOs....He's one of the last people I want to see running an SG Franchise.

Oh boy! Another "group to play" game. I could be very, very excited about a Stargate game as I am an avid fan of the series, but having to actually have a "team" to play makes me yawn.

Here's hoping that the game and its missions allow for solo play with no penalties for not traveling in a group (like not being able to get the phat loot).

Come on, if you want to be anti-social, just do what everyone else does in mmo's, get yourself a couple extra accounts. From the way it appears, at least for this one you will only need 4 accounts to fill out your "forced group." Playing solo makes me yawn.

Seriously, the whole concept of SG1 is based on a 4 man team, could you honestly expect an MMO developer to ignore this? If the missions even vaguely follow the events of the SG teams in the series, they pretty much have to require some team play. How many times do you see Jack wondering off to an unexplored planet alone? Sure there can be special "storyline" missions similar to when Jack was imprisoned by Ba'al that would need to be done solo. The many times Teal'c has been captured by the different system lords, Samantha's encounters with Fifth (the human replicator), Mitchell's ordeal with the Warriors of Sodon all come to mind as solo adventures.

All that said, I hope that they make the game a levelless system with rewards that are geared toward the individual's gameplay. Make the system based on aqcuiring skills through experience if they feel a need for "the treadmill." Personally I would prefer skills be granted through exploration, combat, in game problem solving, questing, etc. Let the individual skill sets be gainable through solo play and the group skills require group play. For example, there needs to be a means to heal yourself and others, if you only solo play, you will only gain access to self healing techniques and skills. Same for combat, if you only solo play, you only gain access to individual combat skills (no crew served weapon skills, multi pilot ship skills, etc).

And with that last paragraph, I hope they make the game equipment open to all players. Just because I play solo and do not have any crew served weapon skills, does not mean that if I am in a firefight I should not have the simple ability to walk over and pull the trigger on a crew served weapon. But I should suffer a penalty to whatever modifiers they have in the game for combat (accuracy, reload, etc).

Needless to say I am pretty excited about this game and cannot wait to hear more.

Stargate being the enhanced and futuristic show it is, it can lead to a VERY promising game title. Of course you would want to stay away from looking like some other futuristic, space type games. But I believe they could make this an outstanding title.

Sounds Great, i know my whole guild and more guilds are waiting for a nice Sci-Fi Mmorpg, just not really sure if the 4 man teams are a good idea. Really would reconsider that to making it a minimum of 8. Good Luck with this game :)

Huge fan of the show! Seeing that this guy has had his hands in a few of the crappiest mmo's out there doesnt make me want to go out and make a fansite ... although people do learn from their mistakes most of the time and to compete in the era of "WoW" you have to step it up a notch. Hopefully this development crew will do just that and still be able to keep the drama and storyline of the tv show intact will be a task. I will be keeping this game in my sights to see if they will do right by the show. Good luck to the dev team :)

All games that received major hype.... all games flopped big time... can you see the trend? Ybarra is the worst thing that happened to Stargate fans imho...

Matrix was a bad game. Shadowbane was a good game plagued by technical problems and targetted at a VERY niche market (pure PVP). He's done a ton of single player stuff that was very good. I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic until they reach Beta.

Sounds to me like he's taking his Matrix Online ideas and putting them into a new game.

3 Major Factions: Free People (Zion), Entropy Group (Merovingian), Replicators (Machines).

Death meaning a 'time out', or does he mean a lowering of abilities that slowly regenerate over time?

End Game PvP - lets all stand around in one area and fight until boredom sets in.

PvP'ing for control of worlds sounds a lot like the Matrix's Archive Areas.

Symbiotes as a playable race, or is it just a tweaked disguise system?

I'm not holding out any hope, personally. I just paid for another month on the Matrix Online (I just bought the game and my free month run out) and already I'm getting bored. When missions are all there is, its dull. Dueling was fun for the first five minutes, now its just a case of who rolls highest wins. And we can't even see rolls now with the introduction of CR2.0. Ah well.
