The folks at Nevrax have given us an exclusive trailer of the upcoming expansion Ryzom Ring, which for the first time will let players develop their own content for an active MMORPG. The Ring is intended to be a free expansion. You can view the trailer here. Dana Massey |

This would have been an excellent opportunity to be sucked in by the expansion trailer and get me interested in the game. Unfortunately, it didn't really show me much.

I felt the same way. Mostly it was just people walking, not very interesting. And if what we're able to bring to the game is a couple of tents, well.. I'll just leave it at that. |

I am admittedly obsessed with eye and ear candy. I loved watching this trailer. ^_^ But I agree it wasn't as informative as it could've been. |

Eh, pretty lame trailer. Been a long while since I've seen a main stream game with such a weak preview and it's for an expansion at that. |

The only bit worth noting is the very end where you see the arrows and zones and so on, demonstrating what the expansion actually _is_ which is the construction of your own 'content'. Postmortem Studios |

Yeah, I am going to have to look into what all that means some more. SoR is a good game, if it is what they are implying, creating your own group battles and using some sort of group tactics organization tools, it may be worth looking at. |

Yes, without a lot of Ryzom game knowledge, and some previous knowledge of the 'Ring' expansion, there is not a lot to intice someone. If you go to http://www.ryzom-ring.com/presentation/diaporama That link gives a much better idea of the possibilities, although that was a very very early presentation of the abilities. The 4 part Giga-TV (German) interview with Jessica Mulligan http://www.ryzom-movies.de/index.php?option=com_weblinks&catid=29&Itemid=49 does a better job too. You mis some of the information as it is in German, but that majority is in English. None of these do it justice though. I don't have everything compiled, but in some if you have seen all the bits, I think most folks in the RPG space would be pretty impressed. Add to all of that creation the ability to 'live GM' the scenario while people are playing it, and the potential goes through the roof. Imagine the players starting to gain an advatgae ina major battle, and as a GM you send a sweeping attack in from the rear. It's worth a lot more of a look, and pretty exciting all things considered. It's just this video does nothing for someone without experience and understanding of the product.

I've rewatched the trailer and here's some more info from a long-time Ryzom player. First thing we see: placing scenery/buildings in an empty map. Next is an NPC with some footsteps showing the route. The weird mound thing is a kitin, er molehill :p. Some of the most enjoyable Ryzom events involve fighting off these Starship Troopers' style giant insects. The kitin are leaving the nest, not just spawning everywhere which adds realism. Then we see a bunch of highly varied NPCs leaving the recently-created camp. This is showing off the customisation, all races, armour patterns/colours, weapons etc. seem to be available. From other R2 info, the character facial/build customisation is the same as when you make a game character - that give a lot of freedom. They face off, blah blah. Then we see more routes (@1m18s), oh and a nice zoomed out camera unless they're using the camera hack :p Don't forget you do all the editing in the game engine itself. In the last few seconds you see a bit more of the interface, best to check out the links already provided for more info on that. What you also see in this video is the small size of map, the cliffs enclose the area. I'm hoping for bigger map areas but you have to start somewhere. I think this promo video was created by two players who are alpha-testing R2. If that is true then it does show that player-created content will be taken seriously if it's up to scratch. Some content will even be integrated into the main game, which is pretty cool. |
